General Commercial (Low Slope) Roofing Information

Allcommercial(lowslope)roofsystemsuse“membrane”roofingproducts.Lowsloperoofsarewaterproofastheyaresubjecttopondingwater.(Steepsloperoofsuseeithershinglesormetal,andaredesignedtorepelwaterasopposedtobeing“waterproof”.)

Modifiedbitumenroofingwasdevelopedtoreplacebuilt-uproofing.Built-uproofingconsistedofalternatinglayersofreinforcementandbitumen,astickyformofasphalt,appliedtotheroofonthejobsite.Althoughitstillrequiressomeon-sitehandling,modifiedbutimenroofingeliminatesmuchofthelaborandmaterialsinvolvedwithtraditionalbuilt-uproofing.

Modifedbitumenroofingmembranesconsistofpolyester,asphalt,andamodifiertogivetheasphaltvolumeandflexibility.Modifiedbitumenroofsystemsaccountforthemajorityoflowslopecommercialroofsystemsinthecountry.Modifiedbitumenroofsystemsaretoughandredundant,equatingtosuperior,reliableperformance. Thefirstrooflayerconsistsofabasesheet(eithermechanicallyfastenedorinasphalt),withthesecondlayerconsistingofamodifiedmembrane.Additionallayersofbasesheetand/ormembranemaybeapplieddependingupontheproject.Finallayershouldalwaysconsistofmodifiedroofingmembrane.
