Rooting In We have spent the past three months establishing a creative, spiritual practice in community with one another. The practices we’ve created may differ according to our own personal preferences, but we’ve all sent roots down into the rich soil of journaling in one form or another, and while there may not be anything apparently different ‘on the surface’ of things, this rooting into practice may already be shifting us, transforming us. We may find ourselves feeling less harried in our lives, more grounded. We may find ourselves paying more attention to the beauty we find in the ordinary, more likely to pause for a moment to bask, to experience a thing more deeply. We meet ourselves on the page in order to become more intimate with ourselves. Intimacy is the goal here in Book Of Days. We meet ourselves on the page in order to foster a sense of knowing ourselves, intimately. We meet ourselves on the page in order to see ourselves more clearly, more deeply, and with more self-empathy. We are here to live in accordance with the importance of our own thoughts, feelings, experiences, memories. We are here to subvert all the social messaging about how little we matter. We are here to declare the fact of our mattering. We can deeply love what we know deeply. BOD fosters that deep knowing. It allows us to play with the big questions, lightly. Playfully. It allows us to ask ourselves who we are, what it all means, what we want out of it. These acts of self-inquiry are like tender roots we shoot into the soil of our lives. They let us take root, come ‘home’ to our lives in a way that merely living day to day without checking in with ourselves might not allow. The time we spend with ourselves is how we ‘root in’, and rooting in is radical. Instead of ‘rooting up’ - starting over, tossing out the baby with the bathwater, giving up in despair, we root in - to our own meaning, to our own mattering. With time & attention, we coax ourselves out of the misapprehension that we must be something different from what we are, that we exist to please others, to serve others. We remember, every time we derive even a little bit of pleasure, self- empathy, revelation from our own practice, that this life is ours. It belongs to us. We get to claim it. We get to shape it. Your life matters. All of it. It is monumentally important, because it is your one, wild, precious life - the only one you get to have with this particular consciousness, in this time, in this place. It matters so much to show up for it. And yet, this life, as is true with all life, is so lightly *here, now*, and it could be gone in a literal heartbeat. How do we honour the preciousness of it? How can we root into the importance of it, while holding it lightly, with at least as much mirth as reverence? This thing we do is sacred play. We establish rituals. We fall in love with mediums and techniques. We delight our own senses. We try, and fail, and try again. We come into community with one another, as we share. We become intimate with ourselves, and we allow others to become intimate with us by virtue of our showing up. This is church. This is temple. This is the hushed pilgrimage to the holy ground of our being. It’s also an ecstatic rave, a cha cha cha, a festival, a feast, a wonderland. We are rooting into radical self love. Every moment we spend in practice is a signal to our innermost being that we matter enough to take this time, this moment to splash some paint around, to check in, to be with ourselves. Your Journal Journey

The rest of this workbook is an opportunity to check in with yourself day by day throughout the month of April. I have created a series of prompts - one for each day. The prompts themselves are listed in order on the next page. The journal pages for each day do not include the prompts so that you can choose to engage the prompts or not as you see fit. These pages also include a space for your ‘to do’ list for each day, a gratitude list (gratitude is magicks!), your musings on a chosen oracle for the day (tarot, runes, bibliomancy, a quote or song lyric that entered your consciousness that had mean- ing for you, a bible verse, etc), and a blank space that you can use for doodling, drawing, writing, or pasting pictures in.

The entire PDF can be printed at the beginning of the month on 8.5 x 11 of office paper, or you can print as you go by selecting the specific page number you want to work with that day. You can also just read this PDF on screen, and then print only the list of prompts to cut & paste into your chosen journal. The choice is yours. I’m all about empowering you to do what feels good and right for you.

On the last page of the workbook is a list of sacred days including moon phases that you might want to refer to. I like to art journal along with the moon phases with a focus on intention setting at the New Moon and gratitude or devotion on the Full Moon. I also like to journal along with the wheel of the year as celebrated by Neopagans with the addition of some of the holy days from the Judea-Christian and secular calendars of our time. How you use this information is up to you. To delve more deeply into the symbolism behind these holy days or the astrological correspondences, I recommend using your Google Fu - just look it up and adopt or adapt what you learn in a way that makes the most sense to you.

Ways In

While this workbook is set up to be used for written journaling, the prompts are also very ripe for art journaling. You can do both written and art journaling, or you can opt to do only one or the other. It’s entirely up to you. I often find that writing about something first leads me to the art journal. I’ll write something particularly resonant - like, ‘hope is an involuntary response, much like the beating of our hearts’ and BOOM! I will want to create a journal spread that uses that quote and expresses that thought in symbol and imagery. For me, creativity is a mishmash of writing AND art, and the one always seems to lead to the other, but I am aware that we don’t all work that way. You might find the prospect of written journaling completely daunting. If that’s the case, don’t write. Sit with the prompt for five or ten minutes and contemplate it. Let whatever thoughts or feelings lead you to picking a colour, a symbol, a technique. If an answer to the question pops into your head, jot it down for use as a quote or text element in your journal. In other words, use this however you like, in whatever way best suits your creative style.

Book Of Days 2017 is a year long ‘art in community’ experience taught in three sessions that run from January 1 – April 1, May 1 – August 1, and September 1 – December 1 throughout 2017. Each week, you will find new content designed to inspire your own art journaling practice, as well as instruct you in mixed media art journaling techniques.
