PRESIDENT’S REPORT In reviewing season 2013/14, the club can be proud of our achievements. We were backing up from an extremely successful season in 2012/13, coupled with an increased competitive playing environment as a result of our grade promotions and an association consolidation of grades. This presented potential issues for the club in delivering to our high expectations and the risk of complacency from a sustained period of success. I am pleased to report that the club maintained our focus and we were able to continue with our success across all areas:

• On the playing side, we performed well against much stronger competition in all grades with the First XI making the finals in our first year in the premier division, the Fourth XI taking out the G Grade premiership and the Veterans, U16s and U14s making the grand final and all teams representing the club admirably on the field recognised with our joint DVCA Spirit of Cricket award.

• On the player development side, we continued to develop our junior program with an excellent coaching group, running another successful Milo program, introducing an U10 team towards the end of the season and bolstering the number of senior sides to 5 with a number of new players and returning players and many juniors commencing their senior careers.

• On the club morale side, we maintained great club support with well attended and successful functions, a committed supporter group and we enjoyed the continued success of our Veterans side.

• On the financial side, we maintained a blend of operational revenue and cost control with appropriate development of club facilities that can continue with another profitable year and maintained good sponsorship revenue thanks to our committed sponsors within the club and external organisations supporting us as a local sporting club.

• On the administration side, we continued to manage and represent the club in a professional manner with excellent training driven by our coaching panel and administration functions spread across the executive, committee and a loyal group of helpers.

Luke Anderson has indicated that he is unable to take on the Senior Coach role for next season due to business and family commitments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Luke for his excellent work over the past two years on his return to the club. This was an extremely important appointment for the club with our introduction to the DVCA, a job well done by Luke resulting in great club playing success and building our reputation in the association. We are well positioned as a leading club in the DVCA as a result of our team success and performances this season in the Barclay Shield and have been recognised within the association for our administration strength. We must set our goals for a Barclay Shield premiership. The executive has been working hard over the off season to ensure we maintain the environment to bring continued success to the club. The club has appointed Houssam Almatrah as Captain Coach for next season with Sam Sheahan taking on a greater assistant coaching role. We also have Michael Lewis returning to the club for a limited number of games in Season 2014/15 when he is available from state duties as the Victorian bowling coach. This is a great coup for the club and will add to our playing strength, club reputation and cricket knowledge across the playing group. I would like to thank the club sponsors for their important role in providing an excellent cricketing environment for our players. It is extremely important that we support our sponsors and I encourage all members and supporters to do their bit to demonstrate the club’s commitment to our sponsors.

Looking forward, the club is in a sound financial position with another good financial result this season, thanks to our efficient treasurer Gary Bryant. We continue to attract great support across the

- 7 -

club. We have excellent cricketing talent amongst our playing group and we look forward to the development and maturity of our younger players. Overall, we are well positioned to continue our club success.

Finally, a thank you to the whole club, players, partners, family, supporters, sponsors, volunteers and administrators for their support during the year. It is a pleasure to serve as president of this great club.

Peter Hodder President

SECRETARY’S REPORT We can be very proud of our achievements as a club for season 2013-14, as always. We reached the level of cricket we know we belong in and performed, despite plenty of external doubt. We will no doubt be better for the run and go at least one better in A Grade next season. The A Grade is obviously our main goal and what we measure ourselves on, however we had some fantastic results in the lower XI’s. Commiserations to the Veterans however congratulations once again to our Fourth XI on taking out the Premiership! Back to back! What a great result for everyone involved throughout the season, especially co captains Andrew Wolczko and Chris Payne leading the way. It was a great day at De Winton cheering on the lads to the win. Let’s do a Brisbane and go back to back to back! Keep performing everybody and keep putting pressure on the blokes in the higher teams, that’s what makes us great and that’s what brings our success. On an individual note, congratulations to Peter Jones for taking out the Geoff Wilson Medal and Jacob Bloom for claiming the Club Champion award. Both prestigious awards and something you both should be very proud of. I also need to acknowledge the efforts of Jacob with the Milo Program. This is a fundamental part of the club and Jacob almost single handily runs it for us. This is a super effort and he deserves more praise then he gets. It all starts from the roots. Our Coach Luke Anderson unfortunately needs to back away with work and family commitments. Houssam Almatrah takes the reigns and will no doubt continue the good work and standards setup by Luke. Thanks Luke for all your hard work for the club. It’s not easy having a young family, let alone run your own business, let alone coach a cricket club. You’re a fantastic club man, player and friend. It would be remiss of me not to thank my fellow executive committee members, Peter Hodder, Gary Bryant (once again taking on two roles) and Mick Langford. These men do an extraordinary amount of work for the club and have carried me for a few years as my fire burns out. Well done to all other committee members and people in roles. Bring on 2014-15 and another successful season for the club. Steve Nikolovski Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT The 2013/14 season continued the past few years financial success. The club has comfortably serviced the loan for the extension, and remains in a sound financial position. Under the new club guidelines, we are required to close the books at the end of June. Previously we have done this at the end of May, so therefore, the current finances report for the 13 month period from 1 June 2013 to 30 June 2014. Future reporting will be done on a financial year basis. The club posted a net profit of $7,159.11 for the financial year. This is in line with the profits from the past 2 seasons ($8,814 in 2012/13 and $7,158 in 2011/12). Our net asset position has also improved from -$6,697 (due to the loan taken out for the extension) at the start of the financial year to finish at -$1,463.94. This means we should be in a positive net position by the end of the season, which is an excellent result. The main financial performance trends were as follows:

• Sponsorships up by $2892.47, due to the new sponsorships of Bendigo Bank and Viewbank Childcare, as well as strong player sponsor support.

• Social functions & Fund raising up by $1,116.05 (due to strong functions, particularly the $2k draw).

• Bar and canteen profit down by $6470.00 (due to no Sunday games, and less finals success). We will also need to consider raising prices next season, as they have not been raised significantly for a few years.

• Subscriptions were down slightly $859.88 – an increase in senior subs (with 5 teams) balanced out a decrease in junior subs due to lower numbers.

• General expenses down by $7,534.95 (due to not having any significant building/repair costs). Again there were solid contributions across the club to attain these results:

• Matt Macaulay and Sam Sheehan for running the major events, including the successful Rosanna Races evening, the Christmas function and the $2k draw, with total profit of $8,235.85

• Nick Carlton for managing the bar which returned a profit of $13,504.63, invaluable for the financial well-being of the club. Also all those who ran the bar during games and major functions.

• Peter Hodder for obtaining a major sponsorship from Bendigo Bank for season 2013-14.

• Eamon Burke (Viewbank childcare) for becoming a major sponsor.

• All of our club sponsors and player sponsors who we thank for their financial contribution to the club.

• All players and club supporters who supported the club at functions and at the bar and canteen. The club remains in a healthy financial position with $3,862.02 in the transaction accounts. We have progressively paid down the loan to save interest, with $8566.00 available for redraw should an emergency arise. Gary Bryant Treasurer

PROFIT AND LOSS STATEMENT

JUNIOR MANAGER’S REPORT Season 2013/14 was our second year in the DVCA, and we fielded 3 competitive sides U16, U14 and U12, as well as a Milo In2Cricket Program The U14s and U12s had more than 11 players, which sometimes made it difficult for the coaches to manage player rotation. By contrast the U16s had only 10 regular players. Details can be found in the individual reports, but to summarize:

• The U16 side had a very good season, only losing to the eventual winners North Eltham in the home and away rounds and the grand final. Many individuals performed well, with a number of highlights.

• After a slow start, the U14 side did very well, eventually finishing third on the ladder, winning a great semi-final and making the grand final. Unfortunately they fell at the last hurdle, but acquitted themselves extremely well during the season.

• After struggling last season, the U12 side had a much better season, with 3 good wins and a very good percentage.

• We had 28 kids in the Milo in2CRICKET program, a fantastic result. There were enough kids to allow us to enter the older ones in the U10s competition after Christmas to give them a taste for next year. The program was very successful, but we need to build on this success.

Juniors in Representative Competitions

The following were selected for representative sides:

• Darcy Giuliani represented Rosanna in the U16 DVCA Turf Representative side

• Ryan Schmidt represented Rosanna in the U12 DVCA Representative side

• Ryan Schmidt was also selected as part of the North East Falcons – well done Ryan! Juniors winning DVCA awards

The following players won DVCA Awards:

• Charlie Dunbar (U16s) who won the DVCA batting award for U16 Blue

• Nelson Prince (U12s) who won the DVCA bowling award for U12 Teal South Juniors moving into seniors

Many of our juniors are making the transition to seniors. As we have no U18 side this year, all U18s played seniors. In addition, all but one of the U16 squad played seniors. The addition of a 5th senior side has helped us transition more juniors into senior cricket, so it has been a great success. The juniors (and U18s) who played seniors with RCC in 2013-2014 are listed below; Charlie Dunbar (2nd grade); Darcy Giuliani (2nd and 3rd grade); Dalton Marsh, Aayat Khanna, Matthew Jackson, Dalton Marsh, Sam Morey (3rd and 4th grade); Lachlan McGregor, Jackson Wolczko (3rd, 4th and 5th grade); Jordan Roseblade (3rd and 5th grade); Nuwantha Gamage, Toby Wolczko, Hayden Smith (4th and 5th grade); Chris York, Dane Loveridge, Dan Langford (5th grade).

- 12 -

Outlook for 2014-2015 season

Overall numbers are OK, but with many kids moving out of juniors, we need to make sure they all play seniors next season. We also need to recruit in the U14 age groups so we can field 2 sides. Ideally we would have 1 U16, 2 U14, 1U12 and 1 U10 side next season, but we need a few extras in most age groups. We also need to ensure we have a new crop of Milo kids. Please bring down your friends! Acknowledgements

Thanks to all the coaches and assistants including Joe Giuliani, Prasanna Goonewardene, Peter Waddingham, Michael Potenza, Eamon Burke, and Jacob Bloom for all their hard work during the season. I would also like to thank all the managers and parents who helped out in a range of ways, from scoring and helping with ground setups, to helping with running our junior functions and sausage sizzles – many of these have been thanked individually in the team reports. I would also like to thank the senior players who mentored the kids who played and trained with the seniors throughout the season, also thanks to the general committee, in particular Peter Hodder for his unstinting support through the season. Finally, I would like to thank all the junior players, who showed tremendous commitment to the club, with numbers at training and games always excellent. We look forward to seeing them all next season. On an administrative side, we still need to have more people actively involved in the junior club, particularly with regard to communications, organization of functions and so on. Please consider a role (however small) next season to ensure the best environment for our junior cricketers to play. Gary Bryant Junior Manager

SOCIAL MANAGER’S REPORT Season 2013/14 saw new events generated by new people getting involved in the planning stages, in addition the usual and invaluable contributions of others. The season kicked off with the inaugural Rosanna Cup. Before anything else is said about the night, the work of the Waddingham brothers in ensuring we had a race track only hours prior to the event was nothing short of a miracle. The night was relatively well supported but when noting the importance of early season functions in generating revenue for the club to function for the year, numbers could have been better. The last cricketing Saturday of 2013 saw us break up for Christmas with an “R” or “C” themed dress up night. Thanks to Sam Sheehan for his initiative in making the night happen. Clear standouts on the night include Michael “Gib” Coffey dressing up as Mark Rigg, the secretary looking more than comfortable in a pair of stilettos, and the skipper Huss Almatrah’s best Captain Hook impersonation. January became February, signalling the annual RCC 2K draw. This Seasons 2K draw was a standout with overall ticket sales, attendance and profit margin exceeding any other event in recent history. We as a club should acknowledge the efforts of Neeley Nolan. Neeley was our entertainment for the day and not only was her performance outstanding, but she brought with her 10 other people who all purchased tickets (including herself), as well as her and her partner staying till late to support the bar and socialise. This sort of effort from a non-club member is an example to all active and non-active members of the kind of effort that we should be making when it comes to supporting club functions. Massive thanks goes to the Executive with their assistance in planning, organising and setting up not only this event, but all events this year. A big thanks also to Michelle Smith for her efforts in organising the catering. This is a massive responsibility and it is a relief to know that someone will take on the role and produce quality. To number of others who took on small big roles during the day such as the BBQ, raffle tickets etc, thank you, and your efforts did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Without the combined help of all these people events like the 2K draw, and all events for that matter, would not be possible. Matthew Macaulay Social Secretary

CHAIRMAN OF SELECTOR’S & SENIOR COACH’S REPORT

Last season was another successful year for the club in many ways. Our 4th XI winning back to back

premierships, 1st XI having another very consistent season and our other grades showed some

improvement at times especially from our younger players. Charlie Dunbar & Darcy Giuliani showed

great leadership in there Junior team and are some 5 months away from taking the next step at Senior

level. Two of the younger lads in Lachlan McGregor & Jordan Roseblade showed us that they will be

players for the future with great attitudes and concentration. Some key factors that some younger

groups seem to have lost as decades slip by. Hayden Smith, Dalton Marsh & Aayat Khanna also led the

way at training and are players to watch for the future.

After winning three Premierships last season, this season was about stabilising ourselves in a strong

competition and I think I can walk away from the role happy with what the clubs achieved.

If there is one thing I think we need to improve on its "taking the game on when you need to" "Reading

the game" In my opinion the 1st & 2nd XI sides have become used to grinding out wins with

consistency, depth and just being a well drilled side without anyone doing anything spectacular.

Making 150 and defending it, bowling a side out for 180 and getting it 7 down. This is a fabulous way

and has been a very successful way however when you come up against better sides in a better

competition it may not be enough and players sometimes have to adapt their thinking.

Being involved in Coaching this group has been a great experience and something I have

always showed interest in. The job has been made much easier as John Raywood & Huss Almatrah

have showed great support. With Business & a young family the time for the job has been difficult and

support from these two in particular has made it much easier. I would also like to thank Peter Hodder &

the committee.

I’d like to thank the captains for their roles. Dougal & Chris in particular as they stepped up to the role

for the first time and did a great job. With regards to Chairman of selectors, I thought it was a great

year! Though the club feels like perhaps this role shouldn't be filled by someone currently playing, the

group worked well together & I have no doubt the formula is there for whoever takes over. Thanks to

everyone involved and in particular Mick Langford who was in charge to oversee the role.

It’s fantastic to have Mick Lewis back at the club for this season. His experience & leadership will

continue to help improve the club.

Good Luck to Huss next season. Challenges continue to meet any club every year and we have the right

man in charge. I'm not sure of what capacity I’ll be involved at the club next season though I look

forward to what's ahead.

Go Zannas! Luke Anderson Chairman of Selectors & Senior Coach

FIRST XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT

An interesting year for the first XI. Our first year in the Barclay shield and as per usual we went in with high expectations. We didn’t start the season on the greatest of notes with two losses in one day games against eventual finalists. Although disappointing we recognised that two day cricket was our strength and only lost one more game for the rest of the season. During the season we introduced a few new players to our group. Steve Ryan added enthusiasm and spark and from the moment he got his opportunity against Riverside showed he was capable of playing at the level. He was also rewarded for his impressive season with selection in the competition under 21 side. Looking forward to seeing Steve improve over the next few seasons. We also welcomed Julian Holland to the club who was a great acquisition to the group. Congratulations to both guys on their debuts for the club. As a batting group we again had a good even contribution. Afan Sheriff showed his class and made things look easy like only he can do. He had a fantastic season and it was great to see him rewarded by taking out our batting award. We hope to have Afan for many years to come and appreciate the effort he makes in travelling from St Kilda to make himself available. The good news is we don’t travel to Mernda next season. We had eight players averaging over 20, unfortunately our issue again was converting starts into match winning scores. We need to continue to work on this part of our game. It was very pleasing to see big contributions from Nick Carlton (93 against Riverside), Sam Sheehan (78n.o against Epping) and 50s from Scott, Afan and Luke at crucial times. Adding to this who could forget Niko’s 84n.o (thanks FebFast) against Research in a must win game. I was lucky enough to be at the other end in what was the cleanest hitting I’ve seen at Rosanna. As well as the above it was great to see solid contributions from Haedar, JR and Slats when the opportunity arose. The depth of our group is our great strength however in order to take the next step we need to convert the starts into bigger scores. Our bowling was again fantastic despite the early season loss of Matt Macaulay to injury. JR again led the way and I must congratulate him on another fantastic year. John was well assisted by Afan, Scott Shelton and our ever reliable spinners. The highlight for our bowlers was Alan Slater’s 7/17 against Epping whilst defending a modest total. We look forward to having Matt Macaulay back next year which coincides with the kookaburra ball coming back (coincidence?) and expect Scott Shelton to become one of the competitions leading bowlers. We also welcome back Mick Lewis to the club which will obviously bolster our bowling stocks and will be fantastic for the development of all players at the club. Haedar again was quite clearly the best keeper in the competition and it was great to see him being rewarded by being named in the Barclay shield team of the year. Off field a big thank you must go to the committee, in particular our executive led by president Peter Hodder. A big thank you also to all club members for your continued support. We love the support we receive on game day and great thanks must go to John Mackenzie, Peter Waddingham, Alan Bell, Garry Carlton, Brian Flynn, Darrell Leonard, Peter Rawley and Colin McDonald just to name a few. A big thank you must also go to our coaching panel and in particular our coach and chairman of selectors Luke Anderson. I really appreciate all your hard work and support over the last few years and

apologise to Carolyn for the lengthy discussions we would have when you probably should have been looking after the kids. In closing The 2013/14 season was always going to be a challenging one. Coming from the HDCA and the money shield we were unsure of what to expect. Playing off in a semi-final and finishing only a few points from top spot on the ladder was quite pleasing however having not beaten another side in the top four shows we have some work to do. We cannot be satisfied with the past few years and with the group we have, some key acquisitions and some young players ready to come through our time is now to take the next step. Bring on season 2014/15. Houssam Almatrah 1st XI Captain

SECOND XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The 2013/14 season for the 2nd XI was in great contrast to the previous season and ultimately one of disappointment. Whilst for many clubs, entering B grade and not being relegated may have been considered successful, given the success which we have experienced over the past decade Rosanna has come to expect much more. From a personal point of view, I missed the first half of the season, where the 2nd XI put itself in a position to play finals. Credit must go to both Matt Donegan and Geoff Wilson for stepping into the void left by myself due to injury and captaining the side, with significantly better results than I was able to achieve! At the Christmas break we found ourselves with five wins and two losses and with a real chance of playing finals, however the return after the Christmas break saw ourselves with a significant amount of unavailability in the top two grades, severely affecting the make-up of our side. The last four games after Christmas resulted in just the one win, albeit in the final round, which was not a true reflection of the talent and ability of the core group. Having been a long time player at the Rosanna Cricket Club it is a common trait, particularly outside the 1st XI for performance to be impacted by availability and this rung very true. Whilst disappointing it was not an entirely wasted season. A number of players had the ability to play a higher, tougher standard of cricket than the previous year and these players can only benefit by coming up against better cricketers. I look forward to the 2014/15 season and hope that many of the young crew, or rookies as they have dubbed themselves, can stick with it and influence games of cricket moving forward. A huge thankyou to both Geoff Wilson and Matt Donegan for shouldering so much of the responsibility as my body took a lot longer to recover than I had first thought. The assistance which is provided by John Mackenzie, Peter Hodder, Mick Langford and Darrel Leonard on match days in the canteen and assistance with afternoon teas is considerable and makes playing cricket so much more enjoyable. In closing, cricket is a tough game when getting beaten, however I do strongly believe that we will benefit from the lessons learnt this season and will rebound strongly in the coming year. THIRD XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT Season 2013/ 14 in the Third XI should be considered as a transition season. The Third XI captain of the previous several seasons in Michael Langford stood aside, allowing myself to step back into a leadership role with the club. The club also welcomed back three great people. It was terrific to the have the experience of Michael Coffey, Luke Callaway and Tim Cross back down at Rosanna again – we missed you lads and it was great to have you back. The reshuffling of the grades in the Diamond Valley meant that our third eleven would be playing 6, second eleven teams from other clubs. The thought was that it was going to be a much bigger challenge than the previous season in the grade. I was hopeful and possibly, a little too optimistic of putting in a strong performance with the calibre of players we had. We missed out on the top 4 by one game, coming down to the second last round, when we lost to a top of the table side by just 5 runs. We also lost several other games by very minimal margins, which suggest that we were not far off the pace. With a little bit more discipline, and perhaps a touch more caution exercised by the captain in our aggressive game plan, we could well be a top side. All players were encouraged to take ownership of all situations they found themselves in. To think about the game, set their own fields when bowling, debate tactics with experienced players and learn from mistakes. The captain often had some progressive ideas, and by encouraging all players to discuss different ideas, we were able to come to a team decision about how we were to proceed in the game. After losing to Bundoora in the first innings of the first week of a 2 day game, we discussed a way we could get ourselves out of it. All players thought about finding a way to win on the second innings. Attacking and aggressive tactics was the agreed way. David Waddingham and Jackson Wolczko quickly removed the remaining batsman through fast and accurate bowling. Luke Callaway then set the tone with the bat in our second innings, before we set a target for Bundoora to chase in 32 overs. Sean Thompson came out firing, dismissing several of their better batsmen early to have Bundoora on the brink. Unfortunately, we fell just a couple wickets short. However, this was the style of cricket I had been looking for and it produced a most exciting and unexpected finish. I was very pleased with the acceleration of many juniors who played Third XI senior cricket. Darcy Giuliani scored his maiden century for the club; scoring 106 not out against Thomastown. Matthew Jackson, Sam Morey, Aayat Khanna, Dalton Marsh, Hayden Smith, Jordan Roseblade, Jackson Wolczko and Lachlan McGregor all showed they have the ability to progress through the grades in the coming seasons. Watching Darcy Giuliani make his maiden ton in the last over of the innings, batting with Sam Morey, was a real highlight. Watching a very talented, young player craft and build an innings was truly remarkable. Aayat Khanna’s dedication to practice and then tactical thinking during games impressed me greatly. Jordan Roseblade and Lachlan McGregor performances in the final game suggest the club has another two quality young cricketers. The team had a number of notable performances throughout the season. Michael Coffey scored 63, guiding us to victory against Mernda. Joe Giuliani also scored 63 in a regard performance against Bundoora. Luke Callaway was our most consistent batsman, batting at number 3. Sean Thompson led our bowling attack, consistently dismissing the best batsman. In my 21 years of playing cricket I have never played in a game where someone had achieved a hat trick. It is truly rare occurrence, and then in the space of 3 weeks, I witnessed Tim Cross and Lincoln Maurer both taking a hat trick – well done lads. Son of a gun - Tom Flynn showed he can do it all, taking 5 wickets in an innings, after keeping wicket for the first half of the game.

- 22 -

The road to glory unfortunately ended at round 11. The team finished on a high, with a solid win over South Morang in the last round. Well done to the firsts on making a semi-final in their first year of the Barclay Shield, and our fourths for going back to back. Thanks to our chairman of selectors and coach – Luke Anderson for his help and guidance. Michael Langford for the lunch preparation, Sam Sheehan, for his batting advice. Mark Rigg, Luke Callaway and Michael Coffey for their attendance at team tactical meetings, on Friday evenings. And to Peter Hodder, Gary Bryant and Steven Nikolovski for all the behind the scenes administration work. Thanks boys, what you all contribute makes Rosanna a great club! Jacob Bloom Third XI Captain

FOURTH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT A premiership year is a good season by anyone’s standards and with contributions by everyone who played and a strong group of juniors coming through, it was indeed a very good season. Congratulations to Peter ‘Alby’ Jones a worthy winner of the Geoff Wilson medal. After Alby led the 2012/13 ‘G Bangers’ to a premiership the pressure was on the new captaincy team. We shared the captaincy for 2013/14 with the expectation that Andrew would captain on a Saturday and Chris would be around during the week. However, with injuries to Andrew limiting his game time and Chris starting a new job, that wasn’t exactly how it worked out. During the 2013/14 season, 28 players represented Rosanna in G grade, with 18 playing four or more games prior to the finals. This meant that for most of the season we had a core of players and a number who played between 3rds and 4ths and 4ths and 5ths. This allowed a group of predominantly 15 to 18 year olds the opportunity to gain useful experience in the seniors. The year started well with a close win over the old enemy (Banyule) but a disappointing loss to Whittlesea (Rd 2) and a flogging by Research/ Eltham Collegians (Rd 3) gave us one win from three rounds. On our way to the premiership we would go on to lose one more games for the year. The third loss was a close loss to Bundoora United (Rd 10), who we would play again in the grand final. All three games we lost were one dayers.

Congratulations to Ian Gordon, Dean Spokes, Max Cairns, Jackson Wolczko, Daniel Phillips, Peter Jones, Hayden Smith, Lincoln Maurer, Dean Waddingham, Matt Jackson and Sam Morey (12th man) for being a part of a fantastic finals series. Scoring 300 in 68 overs after Banyule batted first and scored 296 was a brilliant team effort. Then the following week in the grand final, to restrict a very strong batting line up to 155 and pass the score 8 wickets down was also a brilliant team effort.

We would like to thank Bharat Batra, Nuwantha Gamage, Toby Wolczko, Aayat Khana and Dalton Marsh who all contributed throughout the year but did not play in the finals series. We look forward to them all making a significant contribution next season. After back to back premierships the ‘G Bangers’ look forward to being ‘F Troop’ next season and taking on a new challenge. Thanks to Luke and the other coaches, President Peter and all of those who contribute to keeping Rosanna competing every week.

FIFTH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT It was a great honour to captain the RCC 5th XI in 2013/2014. I would like to thank the RCC committee for giving me this opportunity in only my 3rd year at the club. I was one of those agitating for an additional side since I really hate the idea of anyone missing out on playing and was happy to help out when there were no other takers. Needless to say I was a bit rusty - the last time I captained a senior cricket side at my previous club (Surrey Park), Bob Hawke was Prime Minister and Prince was topping the music charts! Selections were interesting! With 55 players to select, it was not always easy to fill the final few places. However, it is a testimony to the strength of our club that in all 11 games, we always had 11 players – I believe that this fact alone vindicated the decision to introduce a 5th XI. That is not to say that many a phone call was not made on Friday afternoons to get that last player or two. I really want to thank Luke Anderson, Coach and Chairman of Selectors, for all his efforts during the year. I really appreciated his support and his considerable efforts to ensure we were never short of players. Our season started off with a one-day game against Macleod, who were too good for us, despite good performances with the ball from Numantha Gamage 2/26 & Steve (in his comeback game) Austin 2/35 and with the bat from two of our more senior players, Gary Bryant (29) and Dharmesh Khanna (25). Round 2 saw us off to play the Lalor Stars on a completely artificial oval (!) at Mill Park Secondary College, a game in which we were completely out played by a side that eventually reached the H grade grand final. We were much more competitive in the next two games against Hurstbridge and Eltham without coming away with any points. Our top scorer in the game against Hurstbridge was one of our new players Bharat Batra, who made a stylish 36. These games also saw the continued development of Numantha, whose solid form saw him get promoted to the 4th XI, and the debut of a couple of very promising juniors, Lachlan McGregor and Jordon Roseblade, both showing glimpses of their undoubted talent. One of the most rewarding aspects of the season was to see the development of our juniors. At the other end of the age spectrum - it was also great to see Dennis Groom have a consistent season performing well with both the gloves and the bat. At 0 wins and 4 losses it looked like being a really tough season. However, we then managed to win our next two games in tough encounters against Lower Plenty and North Eltham Wanderers. The game against Lower Plenty saw the coming together in the same side of brothers Jack and Daniel Langford, who both excelled with 2 wickets and ~20 runs apiece and great fielding. However, in my book, Daniel pipped his older brother as MVP with his 15 overs of tight medium pace bowling when we needed it. The win against the North Eltham Wanderers saw the emergence of Lachlan McGregor as a bowler, with an outstanding performance of 12 overs 3/12 and a great contribution from veteran Geoff Stringer with 3/18. This game also saw the return to form of Max Cairns who top scored with 30 (before continuing this good form for the rest of the season in the 4ths) and a major contribution from “Extras” who made 27! In the final 5 games we battled hard without success. We managed to fight off an outright defeat against an Old Paradians/St Francis side who decided to include their Barclay Shield number 3 bat! A highlight of this game was the 1st half century from Gary Bryant. The game against Heidelberg could easily gone our way with a bit more luck and included a great knock from Mick Langford who almost carried his bat with a fantastic fighting 47. During these games, it was great to see the continued development of some of our more senior “rookies” such as Billy Murdoch and Mark Stringer who made great strides during the season.

- 24 -

I would like to thank all 31 players who played in the 5th XI during the season. We always played our games in the right spirit. I especially would like to thank the other senior players for helping me out, particularity Gary Bryant (my ever reliable vice-captain), Geoff Stringer, Dennis Groom, Mick Langford and Dharmesh Khanna. I would also like to thank Mick Langford, Darrel Leonard and all the others who made all the lunches during the season. Winning is not everything, particularly for the 5th XI. It is about giving opportunities for members to play the game we love. Quoting from our club’s vision, we aim “To provide cricketers of all backgrounds and abilities with an enjoyable competitive game”. I have no doubt that the 5th XI helped the club achieve this worthwhile goal. Dougal McCulloch Fifth XI Captain

VETERANS CAPTAIN’S REPORT The 2013/2014 season saw the Rosanna Vets playing their fifth year in a Veteran’s competition. By way of background the Vets stemmed from and was put together in memory of Club legend Bill Lambert who died in October 2009. Kevin Albert Lambert (known as Bill) was a legend of the Club whose legacy is well served by his son, Anthony (Dasher) Lambert and grandsons Matthew and Scott who have also played with Rosanna Cricket Club. After first entering a team in the Northern Metro Cricket Association (NMCA), we won two premierships in our first two years. In our third year we went very close but missed out on a grand final berth. The Vets competition is quite unique, in that it provides an opportunity for those who want to stay active, and be involved in a team sport, to enjoy their cricket in their twilight years, without the rigours of the Saturday competition. The message conveyed, to all who make themselves available throughout the season is, play each game in the spirit of the Rosanna Cricket Club, and bring a good sense of humour. 2013/14 had the Rosanna Vets entering their second year in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association (DVCA). In our first year of DVCA, we were quite competitive in B Division, just falling short of playing finals. We looked forward to playing a bigger part in this same competition, over the past summer, and this was realised, with us playing off for the premiership. The Vets competition is for over 40’s, and games are played fortnightly on a Sunday. In the DVCA sides bowl 36 overs each, with a maximum of six overs per player. However, you must bowl a minimum of 8 bowlers. Batsmen retire at 40, and cannot come back in if the side is bowled out. If you are confused, have some sympathy for the captain trying to work out logistics throughout the game! Twelve players can play in a game in the DVCA, but only 11 bat, meaning you can have a bowler who does not bat. Due to the extreme unpredictability of the Melbourne weather, we managed to complete 5 games in the regular home and away season, out of the scheduled 7 games. We had 2 draws, one for a wash out and one for a heat out. We had a couple of nail-biting finishes throughout the year, none more enthralling

- 25 -

than the game against Eltham-Research early in the season, where chasing a score of 123, we were precariously placed at 9/99, with Matthew ‘Springer’ Thackwray and Warren ‘Bulldog’ Brown our batsmen at the crease. In a magnificent display of gritty Rosanna ‘never say die’ attitude, we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Springer and Bulldog dispatched the ball to all parts of the boundary, with Bulldog hitting the runs to seal victory. This, I am sure will go down as one of Bulldog’s finest memories. In a season of firsts, we also saw history created, with the 4 brothers Flynn playing their first, and most likely final game together in the same team. We had a memorable win that day, providing a fond memory for the Flynn family, being absolute stalwarts of the club. It was fantastic to see so many blokes put up their hand throughout the season, numbering somewhere in the vicinity of 30, with 20 blokes qualified to play in the grand final team. This was a selection nightmare, but a pleasant one to have. Sincere thanks to all that made themselves available throughout the season. I am sure I speak for all by saying that we had an enjoyable time and a rewarding season. We welcomed a few new players this year, including some recent 40 year olds, and some returning players to the scene, who have been around the club for many years. Those players were Matthew Flynn, Prasanna Goonewardena, John Raywood, Peter Rawley, and Neil Jackson. We hope to see more of these players in future games. Special thanks go to Cecily and Margaret Flynn for their ongoing fantastic support for the club, providing the best afternoon teas in the competition. Thanks also to the Vets number one ticket-holder supporter, Brian Flynn. Brian was both a great supporter throughout the season, and a more than helpful scorer, who always kept the official scorers on their toes. Congratulations once again to Mark Muscat, who was the Vets premier player for the year and this year’s Vet’s Award recipient. Mark, throughout the season exhibited the traits that you would attribute to a model performer, and highly respected member of the Rosanna Vets team, the wider Vets competition, and the Rosanna Cricket Club in general. He is a fantastic competitor, who never gives his wicket away. Mark is a role model for up and coming young players of the Rosanna Cricket Club. Finally, a big thankyou goes to the Executive and general committee, for their tireless work through the season, and particularly, support for the Veteran’s Competition concept. Well done and thank you to all involved. Chris Leech Veteran’s XI Captain

UNDER 16 COACH’S REPORT I am pleased to say that this season was very successful for the boys, making it all the way to the grand final only to fall short by 40 runs to the eventual winner North Eltham. It was a great start to season winning 8 out of 8 up until the Christmas break, only playing with ten players. It was also pleasing to see the boy further develop their cricket skills which saw 9 of the 10 kids play senior cricket at some stage during the season. As was the case last season there were some outstanding individual performances again this time around. The season also saw the bottom age lads that came up from the U14s take the next step on the improvement ladder. Charlie, Darcy, Toby and Lachie were our four players who took out the awards for the season, however without the help of their team mates I’m sure their season would not have been as successful. Special thanks to Jordan McCaig who came up from U14s to play the last round and the finals, which helped a lot. It’s been my pleasure and a real privilege to be coach of a Rosanna team and I’ve truly enjoyed it from start to finish. But like all coaches I’ve need help along the way and I would personally like to thank those people now. Team manager Dharmesh Khanna for all his help during the season with the boys on training nights and match days. Stuart and Kristy McGregor for scoring every game of the season, a truly big help. Max and Leanne York for the canteen duties on Friday nights. Gary Bryant and Peter Hodder who have helped and guided me through the last two season when I had no idea about the administrate workings of a cricket club, their help was greatly appreciated. Finally I’d like to add a special thankyou to Huss Almatrah for his timely advice to the lads leading up to the semi-final. Thanks also to Peter Waddingham and Geoff Wilson for their coaching advice. And to all the senior players who came and supported the boys during the grand final, thank you. Joe Giuliani U/16 Coach

UNDER 14 COACH’S REPORT The U14s had a very successful season. We ended up as the runners up of the DVCA ‘Teal’ competition. This is the second consecutive year that we made the Grand Final, but unfortunately we lost to Banyule this year. It is very disappointing, but as a team, we are really proud of what we have achieved during the season, and all the credit should go to Sam and the entire team for their excellent performance right throughout the season. At once stage we were bottom of the ladder but we finished off as the second best team in the competition, and without any doubt I would say we are the most improved team in the competition. The contributions from U12s and the new comers to the team, Jackson, Alex, Max and Richard, have made a huge difference to the team along with the older boys. I was happy to be part of this team. They are very talented and a great bunch of players. On top of that they were well disciplined and well behaved at all times. We started off the season with three losses in a row. I would say that we had the worst drew in the competition as we had to play against all the best teams at the start. Our first win did not come until round 4 against Greensbourgh. That win actually helped us in many ways, and I believe that was the turning point of the season and from then on we kept winning until round 8, and during this time we were able to register the only outright win in the competition against Riverside. The New Year brought

- 27 -

an unfortunate loss against Premiership favorite Banyule. By this time we had lost all the one dayers. We had to win the last two matches against Whittlesea and Plenty Valley Bats in order to book a place in the finals. We did really well against Whittlesea at their home ground. Our bowlers helped to destroy Whittlesea for just 50 runs. Our performance against Plenty Valley Bats proved that we were one of the strongest contenders to be in the GF. Even though we were just shot out for 60 odd runs we bounced back to restrict PV Bats to just 51 runs to claim a spot in the Semi Finals. We were placed 3rd in the ladder at the end of the last round. Our semi-final performance against Whittlesea was the highlight of the season. We did really well to restrict Whittlesea to just 102 runs on their own backyard. Our bowling was accurate and spot on, our batting was excellent. Finally we had achieved our goal - another Grand Final, but unfortunately we could not win the flag this year. As always there were some memorable moments during the season. The best moments were: defending 60 odd runs against Plenty Valley Bats; making 200 runs against Macleod and bowling them out for just 58 runs; An outright win against Riverside; Jack’s 3 wickets for 0 runs; Alex’s fantastic catch against Plenty Valley Bats - he took 9 catches in total during the season. Our batting struggled at times but Sam scored 223 runs @ 24.7, Ryan 218 runs @ 27.25 and Alex 84 runs @17.00. We had a few good partnerships but Martin and Harry’s partnership against Research was the best of the season. Bowling was certainly our strength with Jeremy taking 12 wickets (best of 3/20), Alex 10 wickets (best 2/5), Harry 10 wickets (best 3/4) and Jack 10 wickets (best 3/0). Thanks to Peter Waddingham for all his help during the season, to Julie Waddingham for scoring every week, to Veronica Castles for being team manager, and all the parents who helped out during the season. Prasanna Goonewardena U/14 Coach

…………………………

UNDER 12 COACHES REPORT Season 2013/14 saw our second season in the DVCA. Last year it was fair to say that at the best of times we struggled to be competitive, so this year began with a program centred around consolidation in the areas where the boys showed some dramatic improvement in the last month of the 2012 / 13 season namely, their ability to defend wickets, attack poor deliveries, running between wickets and bowling in a consistent manner by landing balls on the pitch. Eleven of our squad returned and we picked up three new players for a squad of 14. With many returning, the boys were familiar with the training and match routines which allowed us to quickly build on the area’s we had identified that were lacking in each of them. Once again at the start of the season, the focus was on participation, ensuring all players had a bat and bowl, regardless of the match situation. After the Christmas break was changed this slightly to prepare the 8 members of the team for their roles next year in the U14s. This change focused more on the ‘role’ they would play next year, a role around their ‘strengths’ in either batting or bowling. Throughout the season our boys were absolutely fantastic. With each game their improvement in all facets of the game was noticeable. In round 2 we won our first game for two years and the joy the boys

- 28 -

experienced was something to be seen! In round 4 we really showed what we were capable of scoring 0/70 chasing 121! We asked each and every player to protect their wicket and whilst we didn’t make a lot of runs the boys showed their capacity to work hard and willingness to do what was being asked of them. The next game was the complete opposite. All out 68 chasing 151, (the only time we were all bowled out for the season) but it was the game that turned our season around! Everything was asked of them went out the window and from here we were able to reinforce the principals of our training program. Our next match saw us score 100 runs for the first time in 2 years and we would not score under 100 again for the season in a two day game. From here we lost by 13, 3 and 7 runs losing only 16 wickets whilst picking up 24 wickets. The highlight here, being our one day game against the top team Heidelberg where we had them 6/1 but thanks to two representative players they just got over the line against us! An outstanding effort! The boy’s confidence really grew from this game and they went on to win their last two matches convincingly to finish sixth on the ladder. As a measure as to how much they improved we finished 1st for ‘lost wickets’, 2nd for ‘wickets taken’, 3rd for ‘runs against’ and 5th for ‘percentage’! However, our ‘runs for’ were last, which reflected our ‘coaching’, where due to poor batting techniques we focused on protecting our wicket to gain the correct batting skills and in the early part of the season this approach cost us runs. Over the season we had some outstanding performances and in judging the awards, we took a ‘holistic’ approach, looking not only at player’s performance but also taking into account their attitude, capacity to listen, willingness to learn and follow directions, sportsmanship and their approach to the ‘team’ environment. The following players were the recipients of awards:

GOLD: Jonathon Potenza - 56 runs @ 28 with 7 no, 6 wickets @ 8.67, 2 catches & 3 run outs. SILVER: Nelson Prince – 85 runs @12.14 with 3 no, 8 wickets @ 4.88, 2 catches & 3 run outs. BRONZE: Alex McGregor – 123 runs @ 24.60 with 5 no, 3 wickets @ 36, 5 catches & 1 run out. FIELDING: Cooper Luby-Anderson – 91 runs @ 30.33 with 6 no, 2 wickets @ 25, 10 catches, 2 stumping & 7 run outs MOST IMPROVED: Thomas Bourke – 23 runs @ 23 with 8 no, 8 wickets @ 8, and 1 catch. COACHES AWARD: Joshua Jackson – 53 runs @ 13.25 with 5 no, 5 wickets @ 12.20, 3 catches & 1 run out. A special mention to Nelson Prince our silver medallist, who won the U12 Teal South bowling award, highlighted by his 3 overs, 2 maidens, 4 wickets for 3 runs against Heidelberg. His ability to put all 6 balls in an over, on the pitch on a good length every week was simply outstanding. The rest of the squad all made valuable contributions to the team over the season. One player took 7 wickets, another 2 took 6, one took 3, a further 2 took 2 each and another player took 1. Only one player did not take a wicket. Batting, another 3 players scored more than 20 runs and only 3 players did not get into double figures for the season. There were 11 boys involved in 32 catches and 9 were involved in 15 run outs over the season. The fielding improved tremendously as the season went on and went a long way towards helping us win our last two games.

As usual we could not have had the season we had without the support and encouragement of the parents and the club. It was great to see so many familiar faces every Friday night as well as at training on Mondays. Special thanks to Mark Prince, Ross Anderson, Tanya Jackson, Kristy McGregor Andrew Wolczko and Rob Castles for their support and help over the season. To Gary Bryant and Peter Hodder were always there to call on and provided constant administrative support that made our role that much easier. Next year we lose 8 players to the U14s. The remainder of the squad, whilst young, will greatly benefit from a year of very competitive cricket and I have no doubt they will continue to improve and excel at the game. After 4 years of coaching the U12s Michael and I will be moving on next season to the U14s. We have thoroughly enjoyed our role and watching the boys develop, but believe now is the time to further our coaching skills with the next age group. Eamon Bourke and Michael Potenza U/12 Coaches

MILO in2CRICKET REPORT The Milo cricket program at Rosanna this season increased to 28 participants (from 12 the previous year). 10 Sessions were split over the pre- and then post-Christmas period. This year we introduced a competitive competition for the top age Milo crickets in the Under 10’s during the second half of season. The dual-programme proved to be a great success, with consistent numbers of 20 – 28 Milo cricketers turning up to every one of the Wednesday sessions, with younger Milo participants being able to see where the programme leads, watching older milo cricketers participate in the modified comp. Dane, Charlie, Oliver, Rowan, Ethan, William all showed great improvement across the sessions. Veer, Noah and Ketav impressed in the Under 10 competition during the second half of the season. Shan, Thomas and Connor demonstrated advanced coordination skills. Tesla, Lachlan, James and Ben are all natural leaders and were a pleasure to coach. And Carlen, under the guidance of big brother Jordan, demonstrated that we could have another famous group of brothers making their way through the club. Following in the footsteps of the greats: Flynn’s, Leonard’s, Jones’s and Almatrah’s. Throughout the entire program, all participants showed solid development, learning the fundamental skills of this great game, doing it all with a smile on their face. This made it a most enjoyable group and season to be a part of. Well done to all the participants involved, thank you to parents for the assistance with training and to our assistant coaches – Aayat Khanna, Hayden Smith, Max Cairns, Jordan Rosenblade and Dalton Marsh for your much needed help. Finally a big thank you also must go to Gary Bryant & Peter Hodder for the behind scenes administration and the giving up their time to represent the club in our big Milo events. Thank You Jacob Bloom Milo in2Cricket Co-Ordinator
