ROSCOMMON FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 51 ENTRY YEAR: 2011 Compartment Acreage: County: Roscommon Revision Date: 11-03-2008 Stand Examiner: J. Hartman Legal Description: T23N R1W sections 1, 12, 13, 24 Management Goals: Manage KW lands in accordance with previously adopted plans. Regenerate some 40 yr old aspen to help stagger age classes and thin natural pine stands. Soil and Topography: Soils are composed Graycalm, Croswell, Geels, Tawas, Au Gres, and Grayling Sand. Topography is level with Marsh Creek and surrounding lowlands bisecting the center of the compartment from east to west. Sandy plains adjoin this to the north and south. Mostly ParVHa habitat type with pockets of PVCd and PArVCo. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Solid state land bordering St. Helen to the southwest. Unique, Natural Features: Potential for dry prairie plants in grassy openings. Hill's thistle, rough fescue, Alleghany plum, and pale agoseris. Potential for ram's head orchid, calypso orchid and limestone oak fern in conifer swamps. Potential for Kirtland's warbler and prairie warbler in young jack pine and for massasauga, spotted turtle, and Blanding's turtle in wetlands and nearby uplands. Potential for dusted skipper, grizzled skipper and red legged spittlebug in grassy openings and young jack pine. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None identified. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Kirtland’s Warbler Management Areas are designated High Conservation Value Areas (HCVA’s). KW management areas 101, 102, 110, and 111 are located within this compartment. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Marsh Creek Headwaters originate in the lowland portions of this compartment and flow west into Lake St. Helen Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Consider large opening complexes to benefit rare and endangered species associated with dry openings. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Mississippian Michigan Formation, Marshall Sandstone and Coldwater Shale. The Michigan is quarried for gypsum and the Marshall was previously used as a building stone in other areas of the State. Most of the good gravel pits are associated with upland areas. Gravel pits are not

located in the area and potential may be limited. St. Helen Field is located four miles to the northwest. The field has produced over 8.7 million BO and 14.7 Bcf gas from the Devonian Richfield Formation and is in secondary recovery operations currently. There are no leases in the Compartment currently, but most of this Compartment and offsetting State lands have been nominated for Nonmetallic Potash leasing. Vehicle Access: There is good vehicle access throughout the compartment. Survey Needs: None needed at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Snowmobile, ORV, and MCCCT trail all run through this compartment. The ORV and Snowmobile Trail run through wet ground at several locations. Some culverts have been installed in the past and more are needed in a few locations. The Midland to Mackinaw Trail is also present. Fire Protection: There is evidence of a great deal of fire activity in the pine areas. The proximity of these fuel types to the population around St. Helen make this a prime area for wildlfire activity. There is a drafting point for water at the snowmobile bridge over Marsh Creek. Additional Compartment Information:

The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: ♦ Cover Type by Age Class ♦ Cover Type by Management Objective ♦ Compartment Volume Summary ♦ Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors ♦ Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors

The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: ♦ Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types ♦ Proposed treatments ♦ Proposed road access system ♦ Suggested potential old growth

DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS

Conservation Area SCA = Special Conservation Area

HCVA = High Conservation Value AreaERA = Ecological Reference Area

Critical habitat areas are established via a consultative and cooperative process between the DNR and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service for the recovery of threatened and endangered species, as governed by Part 365, Endangered Species Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, and the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. This is an active program, with proposed species plans in various stages of review. As of now only two exist, Kirtland Warbler Habitat and Piping Plover Habitat.

Designated Critical Habitat

HCVA

An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies.
