CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Goood afternoon and welcome to Oxford Street for this afternoon’s crucial NCEL Division One fixture with Yorkshire Amateur.

As wever we welcome all connected with today’s visitors - players, officials, management and supporters - to Rossington and hope they enjoy their time here at Oxford Street, off the pitch at least.

Like ourselves the ‘Ammers’ have been having a tough time of it this season, and they arrive here two places and five points beneath us in the Division One table. As well as ourselves and today’s opponents there are three other key contenders for the two relegation spots; Askern Villa, Appleby Frodingham and Selby Town. After a disastrous start to the season Selby appear to have hit form of late and so for the rest of us points,

wherever they can be gained, are vital, and so both sides will no doubt be vieweing today’s clash as a winnable one. For you, the supporters, we just hope the game proves as entertaining as when we met back in October at Bracken Edge (a write-up of which you can find on page 12).

Don;t forget that on Tuesday night we will try for a third successive week to host Staveley M.W. in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup quarter-final after fog and frost curtailed the first two dates. If you can make it down then please do so and give the side your backing as they attempt to reach the County Cup semi-finals for the first time in decades.

Enjoy today’s game; up the Main!Glen Wilson // Programme Editor

Teamsheets for today’s match are available shortly before kick-off from the Main Stand at a nominal fee of 20p. Please try and have the correct change.

ON THIS DAY

2010 // NCEL DIVISION ONEGLASSHOUGHTON WEL. 1-0 ROSSINGTON MAIN

A disappointing midweek trip to Glasshoughton Welfare befell the Colliery three years ago today as their new year resurgence was halted by a 1-0 defeat.

Jermaine Moyce’s goal eight minutes before the break ultimately settled

the game for the Welfare in front of a crowd of 42 at Leeds Road. We would get our revenge though in the return fixture in April when a solitary goal from Jason Stokes ten minutes from time would give the reverse game to Rossington.

1996 // CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE SUPREME DIVISIONHEANOR TOWN 4-3 ROSSINGTON FC

A second high scoring away defeat in a row for Rossington in the Central Midlands Supreme Division as they followed up a 4-2 loss at Long Eaton United a fortnight previously with a 4-3 loss at Heanor Town.

Rossington were two goals down at the break with John Temperton’s goal cancelled out by two for the home side.

In the second half Temperton struck again, as too did Robbie Nelson, but Rossington couldn’t quite catch their hosts. Current Main Assistant Manager Ian Wilson was in charge of Rossington on the day, though Steve Lodge missed the trip south as he instead saw action for the reserves on this date.

CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISIONROSSINGTON FC 0-1 HIGHFIELD RANGERS1991 //

A single first half goal made the difference in this fixture played on the Welfare field twenty-two years ago today. Rossington had only won one match since the turn of the year - a 3-1 home victory over Kilburn MW two months previously - and their luck didn’t improve any in this fixture sadly.

Current Main manager Steve Lodge was in goal for Rossington for this one, whilst Ian Wilson was in charge from the sidelines.

A double subsititution just before the hour mark with Adie Newman, and Colin Holvey replacing Dave Clark and Dale Bowes unfortunately couldn’t turn the game around and Rossington slipped to a 1-0 defeat in front of a crowd of 84.

Rangers from Leicester, not to be confused with the Doncaster side of the same name, would go on to finish runners-up in the League, their highest ever finish.

TODAY’S VISITORS

The club was founded as Yorkshire Amateur A.F.C. by a local man called Kolin Robertson in Leeds during November 1918, but until 1919 played only friendly fixtures. Around the time that Yorkshire Amateur formed and began playing, a local side named Leeds City became defunct on order of the Football Association following irregularities in their accounts. The enterprising Robertson gained a lease for their ground Elland Road as a venue for Amateur’s friendlies, but by 1920 they had deemed it surplus to their requirements and sold the ground to the newly formed Leeds United for £250. I wonder whatever became of them.

The club had been founded with the aim of challenging the existing professional clubs in the north of England, but with this proving to be unviable on their means the club became one of the founder members of the Yorkshire League in 1920. In 1922 Amateur became the first ever football club from Britain to tour the Eastern European nations of Latvia and Estonia, and they would also go on to produce a number of leading amateur international players with left-back Joe Woodcock becoming the first Bradford-born amateur international.

Having had something of a nomadic existence in their formative years playing at various grounds across Yorkshire including Harrogate Town’s Wetherby Road, the club eventually

A WARM WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE AMATEURsettled at their current home of Bracken Edge in 1922.

The club’s most successful season came in 1931-32 as they reached the 1st round of the FA Cup via victories over Denaby United, Frickley Athletic and Altrincham before being defeated by Football League side Carlisle United. In the FA Amateur Cup though Amateur excelled themselves, despatching the holders Wycombe Wanderers 4-0 on their way to the semi-finals. For the quarter-final replay with Wimbledon at Bracken Edge a club record crowd of 3,569 paid a total of £160 turned up and were treated to a 5-2 home win as the club closed in on a trip to Wembley. However it wasn’t to be as they were beaten 2-1 in a semi-final replay at Filbert Street by Marine. However the season would eventually end on a high as Yorkshire Amateur were crowned Yorkshire League Division One Champions.

Such was the strength of the side in the 1931-32 season that George Hudson, the Amateur International and Captain of that season’s Football Association Representative XI, left the club in mid-season to join Farsley Celtic in the hope of gaining a first team place which he’d been unable to secure at Bracken Edge. The following season further silverware followed as The ‘Ammers’ became the inaugural winners of the Yorkshire League Cup, beating Huddersfield Town 4-2 in the final.

In 1945-46 the club again reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, but in that season the first round ties were two-legged affairs and after beating Lincoln City 1-0 at home, they bowed out 5-2 to the Imps on aggregate following a heavy defeat in the return fixture at Sincil Bank. This was to be something of a false dawn for Amateur as the post-war years would bring a period of decline for the club’s fortunes with occasional success gained in the County Cups and the lower divisions of the Yorkshire Football League including a Division 2 title in 1958-59 and a Division 3 title in 1977-78.

Aside from that triumph in the late 1970’s the club was at a very low ebb and so a new youth policy was embarked upon with the formation of the Junior Section. This approach has produced rich dividends in recent years with a number of players moving on to full-time professional football including Stuart Naylor & Gary Strodder (both West Bromwich Albion), Andy Watson (Swansea City) and Warren Ward (York City). Brian Deane of Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield United and England has also played in the Ammers First Team in the past whilst a high number of the current open-age squad are products of the club’s strong Junior set-up.

In 1982 the club became founder members of the newly formed Northern Counties East League, in which they have remained until the current day. Whilst in the League the club have made many improvements to Bracken Edge including the construction of a covered seated stand, spectator hard

standing all around the pitch, new dressing rooms, the installation of floodlights that are to Conference levels, and the building of a floodlit wet weather training facility.

The club also saw success on the field in the 1990s, with the first team rarely out of the top five places in the NCEL throughout the main part of the decade. The team also won the Leeds Senior Cup Final at Elland Road and became Wilkinson Sword Trophy winners in 1998. The Reserve side also twice triumphed in the Reserve Team League Cup during that period.

WE’VE MET BEFORE

The reverse fixture between ourselves and Yorkshire Amateur was played on Non-League Day and in front of a decent travelling support Main started the brightest at Bracken Edge; Dean Thornton’s shot on the turn the first effort on target of the game, though it was comfortably saved. Thornton would have a better chance minutes later as he was played through on goal, only to be denied by a great save from the Yorkshire Amateur ‘keeper.

The deadlock was eventually broken on the half hour mark; Brad Billam’s cross evaded Thornton, but reached Marcel Chipamunga on the far side. The young winger lifted the ball over the Amateur keeper before squaring for Thornton to slot home. A goal to the good Main were denied a clear-cut penalty as Chipamunga was wiped out in the area trying to get onto Thornton’s flick on. Minutes later the travelling Main faithful did have reason to cheer though as Rossington doubled their lead. A ball forward from Billam was cushioned to the feet of Chipamunga on the left by Thornton. Setting off thirty-five yards from goal Chipamunga squeezed

between two Amateur defenders, rounded a third, before slotting past the home keeper for a brilliant solo goal.

Just before the break the home side reduced the deficit, winning the ball in midfield and breaking forward with a through ball that released Dominic Noteman. It looked like Shaun Pendleton had done enough with a well-timed tackle, but his challenge inadvertently helped the forward get past Appleby and he found the empty net from a tight angle to make it 1-2 at the break.

Early in the second half Rossington had chances to re-establish their two goal cushion but the Amateur ‘keeper denied both Nathan Fraser and Thornton as they were in on goal, whilst a deflected Pendleton effort dipped just over the crossbar. At the other end the home side took advantage to equalise in spectacular fashion; a cross from the right was only half cleared by the Main defence, falling into the path of Kaydon Fishley and the Amateur midfielder caught it perfectly with an arcing half volley from twenty-five yards into the top corner of the net.

The remaining twenty minutes saw the game swing from end to end; Fraser was denied by a good save when in one on one, whilst at the other end Amateur twice came close from corners. As the game entered injury time though there was one last opportunity for the Main. A long ball forward was flicked on by Thornton into the path of Fraser and he made no mistake this time, slotting the ball beneath the home goalkeeper to secure all three points.

NEWS ROUND-UP

Some welcome news for the club this week as it was confirmed that we will be hosting a number of Doncaster & District Football Association Cup Finals down here at Oxford Street.

We will host both the semi finals (on April 21st and April 28th respectively) and the Final (on May 8th) of the Doncaster Boys Sunday League Under 16s Cup.

And for the third successive year we will also be hosting the Doncaster F.A. Challenge Cup Final which will be held here on Friday May 10th.

The hosting of these Cup Finals is a great honour for the club and testament to the work put in by the committee on the facilities here, particularly Ian Wilson’s commitment to the playing surface.

OXFORD STREET TO HOST CUP FINALS AGAIN

POINTS DEDUCTIONS FOR PREMIER CLUBSTwo NCEL Premier Division clubs have been hit with points deductions.

Relegation threatened Arnold Town were the worst affected, with a ten point deduction plummeting the Eagles from the safety of 19th to the foot of the table. A statement on the NCEL website read; The Management Board of the Northern Counties East Football League confirm that, under the

provisions of League Rule 14.A.2.1 SPORTING SANCTIONS, Arnold Town Football Club be deducted 10 points with immediate effect.

Also facing the League’s wrath were Glasshoughton Welfare who have been deducted 1 point for fielding an ineligible player in their Premier Division game with Thackley on Saturday 5th January.

COX IN AT HALL ROAD RANGERSJason Cox has been unveiled as the new club chairman at Premier Division Hall Road Rangers.

Cox, who is current Assistant Manager to the highly successful under 18s side and father of Rangers forward Jordan Cox, was delighted with his new role according to reports on the official club website.

“I’ll give it my all,” said Cox. “We have a brilliant set of players under our banner at the minute and with the determined committee members we have here we will strive for success.”

Cox’s first game as Chairman will be a tough one, away to Bridlington Town this afternoon as Andy Foster’s young guns will look to capitalise on their good away form.

MAIN IN ACTIONSAT 2ND MARCH // NCEL DIVISION ONE

ROSSINGTON MAIN 1-2 CLEETHORPES TOWN For the visit of high-flying Cleethorpes manager Steve Lodge kept faith with most of the side that had gained a result at Grimsby Borough the previous week. Liam Copley returned in goal with young Wildey away and Ben Clark replaced Rhys Brailey on the bench. On a glorious afternoon for football early exchanges were fairly even but the quick long ball was catching our defence out in our eagerness to get forward, and it was no surprise that this was how Cleethorpes took an early lead, the visiting forward getting clear to lob the on-rushing Copley from the corner of the 18 yard box. We pressed forward in search of an equaliser as had been the case the previous week, but often left ourselves exposed and we were fortunate that we did not find ourselves further behind. Without really testing the visitor’s keeper we actually scored fom a quickly-taken corner midway through the half. Fraser’s kick being met by Thornton’s clever run and flick at the near post to be knocked over the line by Fallon with the Cleethorpes defence almost static.

Copley saved well from a Cleethorpes header and Billam forced his counterpart into action with a shot from distance, but we went further behind before the break when a shot from the left hit the foot of the post, rebounded across the goal-line and

was tapped in at the other post by the on-rushing Mascall to record his 2nd goal of the game. Although we had not been at our best we were still in with a shout at the interval, Cleethorpes had threatened going forward but their defence looked vulnerable under pressure.

Quite how the 2nd half remained goal-less surprises me as both sides went in search of the vital goal that might determine the final outcome. Copley had to make many timely saves and interceptions on the edge of his box, and the visiting keeper was just in the right place as close range headers from both Holvey and Thornton were held right on the goal-line. A Cleethorpes free-kick shaved our post and Fallon’s effort under pressure from two defenders beat the keeper but had the same outcome at the other end. In the dying minutes under intense pressure the visitors’ defence was visibly panicking, and following the award of a free-kick the Cleethorpes No.11 was dismissed for verbal abuse aimed at the linesman. Sadly there was little time remaining to cash in on our numerical advantage, and the game ended with all players bar Copley in the Cleethorpes half. Perhaps we deserved a point for our late pressure but Cleethorpes should have had the game won before that.

MAIN IN ACTIONSAT 9TH MARCH // NCEL DIVISION ONE

AFC EMLEY 7-1 ROSSINGTON MAINMain produced probably their worst display of the season last time out, and it was reflected in the scoreline as a dominant Emley side swept in four goals before the break on their way to a comprehensive 7-1 win at The Welfare Ground.

Emley started on the front foot with Anthony Haigh only denied an opener by Brad Billam heading clear off the line, but Haigh would get his goal soon after as he got on the end of John Cyrus’s through pass to then lift the ball over Liam Copley and into the net

After twenty minutes it was 2-0 to the hosts as Copley punched clear a corner and Maurtine stabbed the ball back across the box where Cyrus fed Steve Kenworthy who tapped in from close range. Emley remained in control and added a third goal on the half hour mark as Haigh nodded home a Liam Schofield corner for his second of the game.

Two minutes before the break Emley made it 4-0 as Doran Jordan fed Kenworthy on the left, before racing on to meet the return pass and drilling a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner of the goal.

Despite the deficit we managed to produce something of a rally to get back into the game just after the break with Adam Wisdom forcing a good save from the Emley keeper that was thenhacked to safety with Thornton, Fallon

and Doyle all looking to pounce. Billam also came close minutes later as he ended a long run from his own half with a dipping shot that just cleared the bar, whilst Wisdom forced another save from Day in the Emley goal moments later.

With no reward for Rossington from our best spell, we would be punished further in the final twenty minutes as Emley ran in three further goals, despite the best efforts of Copley who had already made good saves from Maturine and Haigh. Kenworthy grabbed his second again from close range, having been fed by Matt Thornton’s through-ball to make it 5-0.

Copley denied Haigh a hat-trick with a good save, but he could do nothing about the Emley sixth goal a few minutes later, a low angled drive from Maturine as he went out to close the forward.

Twelve minutes from time we managed to add a consolation at least as the returning Jonathan Mirfin hit a shot from the edge of the box which deflected beyond the home keeper for 6-1. But the six goal cushion would be restored eight minutes from time as Kenworthy completed his hat-trick. The forward tapping in his third from inside the six yard box from Haigh’s cross for three goals from a combined distance of about four and a half yards.

IN RESERVE

Our 2nd team bowed out of the County Cup last weekend, beaten by a strong and experienced Kirkburton outfit who adapted better to the conditions and had more of the game on the day. Nevertheless it was a brave performance by our young side and an excellent experience for them to have reached this stage of the Competition. I doubt whether any of our lads had seen our pitch so heavy and wet, and the conditions certainly didn’t suit our normal style of play with the pace of our young strikers Chipamunga and Bathgate hampered somewhat. Added to this was the fact that our opponents were direct, strong and gave us little time on the ball when we ourselves were unable to move the ball about with our usual pace.

Kirkburton created several chances before they took the lead after 15 minutes when a powerful shot beat young keeper Wildey. We had to defend for most of the half and only tested the visitors’ defence in rare attacks although McGee was thwarted by a well-timed tackle just as he was about to pull the trigger. Sadly I missed their 2nd goal on the stroke of half-time as I was retrieving a ball from the allotment end, but by all accounts it was another excellent shot from distance that found the top corner of Wildey’s net after he had made an excellent save moments

earlier to deny and delay their eventual 1st half lead.

Managers Colley and Bell changed formation for the 2nd half and adopted a 4-3-3 system in the hope of gaining a hold in the middle of the park (which by now was churning up into a bit of a quagmire) and there was no doubt that it payed off as the game became much more of a contest. The defence came to terms with the pace of the Kirkburton attack, midfield was a more even affair and we used the pace of our front men out wide where conditions were better for running with the ball. The introduction of substitutes Coburn, McMillan and Batchelor also gave us more experience and strength on a tiring pitch, although Coburn had to revert to goalkeeper following an injury to Wildey shortly after Kirkburton had sealed their place in the final with a well-taken 3rd goal. To our credit, and spurred on by a sizeable crowd, we did pull back a late goal when young Marcel was on hand to convert a right wing move to place his shot under the advancing keeper.

TEAM; 1 Wildey (15 Batchelor); 2 Harte, 3 Griffiths, 4 Spencer, 5 Rowley, 6 Jones, 7 McGee (14 McMillan), 8 Brailey, 9 Chipamunga, 10 Maughan, 11 Bathgate (12 Coburn)

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 11. FRANCHISING & REBRANDINGFranchising and Rebranding, two words which, like ‘Shearer’s analysis’ and ‘Ken Bates’, really have no place in football. These are business terms, spoken by business people, they are not for sport. Yet thanks to media overhype of the top flight, a lack of care from the governing body of the game, and supporter apathy, they have been allowed to seep into usage within modern football.

That football fans are familiar with franchising is down to another couple of evil football words; Pete Winkleman. Looking like the love child of Jimmy Bullard and Mick Hucknall, Winkleman decided that he wanted League football in Milton Keynes. Nothing wrong with that, but rather than invest in one of the city’s many long standing non-league teams like Wolverton, he chose instead to relocate Wimbledon there. The thing about football teams in this country is that rather than be known as ‘The Dodgers’ or ‘the Raiders’ that the key element of their name is, much like David Beckham’s offspring, the town in which they were conceived. They are fabric of a community, and communities and the spirit within them cannot be shifted up the M1.

So that was and is franchising, a curious concept which reached a most ridiculous point earlier this season season when MK Dons and the reborn Wimbledon met in the FA Cup and we had the unsettlingsight of supporters holding up MK Dons

and Wimbledon half-and-half scarves, celebrating both the team they had chosen to adopt despite its origins, and the one they killed off.

Rebranding is a term which has been aired this season thanks to billionaire Vincent Tan’s decision to treat Cardiff like his own corporate plaything. He has changed the crest, he has changed the playing kit, and now this week he has refused to rule out changing the club’s name. It is all oddly dictatorial, from making bold statements about accepting his way or else, to handing out free scarves in order to shuffle in the change.

“Do I look stupid?” Tan this week asked an interviewer, whilst sat in a gaudy nouveau chair with his French beat poet facial hair and John Lennon specs wearing a red Cardiff City shirt beneath a red suit. No, course not. That Cardiff are winning games, seems to be enough justification for disregarding a significant section of the club’s traditional support in order to win over a bit of backing from people millions of miles away. Tan suggested it would be foolish to stick with blue as the club had never had any success in that colour. And when you look at how much more successful Wales have been than Italy say, or how many more honours Doncaster have won than Chelsea its clearly a foolproof strategy. So forget the franchising, forget the branding, and give me a walk to my local ground any given Saturday instead.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

Q1. When was your debut for Rossington Main & who was it against?A1. I was 15 when I made my reserves debut at Mexbrough. My first team game came when I was 16 (August 2005) in the FA Cup, at home against Washington Nissan where we lost 2-1. Richard Sennett was in charge, he saw me training with the Over 35 team and asked me if I would be interested in playing in the FA Cup…and I jumped at the chance, of course! Q2. First footballing memory?A2. My first training session with my junior side at 9 years old.

Q3. First team you played for?A3. Rossington Juniors FC, loved every minute of it!

Q4. Which team do you support?A4. Although I’m not a die hard, I do follow Sunderland. I’ve never really had a club, just a general football fan I suppose.

Q5. Which footballer was your boyhood hero?A5. Zinedine Zidane. I loved watching him play, the man was a genius.

Q6. Who do you consider the greatest player in your position? A6. I would have to say Gary Neville. A very good right back and a fantastic attitude, the man was a winner!

Q8. If you could travel in time to attend any match ever which would you choose?A8. It would have to be the 1966 World Cup Final! The biggest game in English football history!

Q9. What is your favourite ever football kit? A9. My brother had an away Newcastle shirt. It was purple and dark blue hoops with a cream round neck collar! Cream shorts and blue and purple hooped sock. Very smart.

MEET THE MAIN MENShaun PendletonShaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions.

John TunneyJohn joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield.

Marcel ChipamungaYoung local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn.

Ben ClarkYoung and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders.

Niall DoyleAs the Reserve team captain Niall has become an important part of the club, helping the Reserves to a close title race last season. Niall likes to keep the ball moving and push forward into goal scoring positions whenever possible.

Nathan FraserAnother very versatile player who is naturally gifted, Nathan loves to attack and run at players and his creativity could prove important . Nathan’s ability to play out wide, down the middle, up front and even at the back makes him a key squad member.

Jonathan MirfinMain’s 2011/12 Supporters’ Player of the Year. Jonathan continues to impress at the Main with consistent displays in the centre of

midfield. Jonathan rarely gives the ball away, starting attacks and creating chances for his team mates. The controlled midfielder is also useful from free-kicks.

Danny TaylorDanny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well.

Brandon FallonBrandon burst into the Main squad in March. Tall, powerful and very quick and for such a young lad he fits in very well at this level. After only seven appearances last season, we are waiting to see even more of Brandon this year.

Tom McLaughlinPace, dribbling and finishing are just three attributes that make Tom a very dangerous opponent for defenders. He can play up front or on either wing. Tom joins after several seasons with Askern Villa and will be looking to cement a starting role at the Main this term.

Scott MaughanThe club’s overall top scorer last season.as he make his return to football after some time away from the game. It proved very successful as he fired the Reserves into a title chasing spot. Scott is a natural finisher who comes alive around the penalty area.

Dean ThorntonA former regular scorer for the Reserves, Dean has returned to force his way into the 1st team. Dean is excellent with his back to goal and good in the air, but equally as effective running past the back four. A natural finisher and confident in front of goal.

Adam WisdomAdam is blessed with pace and power and his physical attributes and appetite to work make him a handful for opponents. A threat running beyond defenders, but really comes alive from close range, where he scored all of his goals last season.

BACK THE BELLESthe FA Cup Final, as that will be held right there on their home ground.

The Belles are managed by former Doncaster Rovers midfielder John Buckley and boast considerable talent in their ranks including the 90+ England caps of Sue Smith. A regular face of women’s football on television Smith was injured all last season, but should be a huge boost to the Belles squad for this campaign.
