Ashmore Rotary: 3rd Prize at Zone 8 Public Image Video Comp The Ashmore Rotary Club commissioned the production of a video clip of two minutes duration to enter into the 2019/20 Best Public Image video for Zone 8.
Zone 8 includes the Oceanic region, comprising of Australia, New Zealand, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and others. Last week we were advised that we have been awarded Third Prize for our video clip of the Men’s Shed and Ashmore Rotary Community Centre Project.
Congratulations go the John Pal, Rock O’Keefe and Ian Wilson who, together with Councillor Dawn Crichlow of the Gold Coast City Council worked tirelessly to progress the project. To Denise Payne who instigated the production of the video, and to President Norman Coventry, Ian Wilson, and David Grant who were involved in the filming of the video.
This project and the publicity it has spawned will be a sound base on which to develop our club in the coming years.

From the Editor’s Desk
It is probable that Ashmore R.C. members have already seen the above
news but as this news sheet is distributed to more than just club
members, I thought that it would be worthwhile to emphasise to others
that reward for effort can demonstrate that Rotary does indeed, open
opportunities.
Let us hope that the opportunity to continue with our projects is not
hindered by irresponsibility in the community both inside and outside
Queensland. Whilst through a combination of luck, good management
and wise decisions of the State government, we have been able to avoid
the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic to date. We must continue to be
vigilant. Victoria and the north of England have been classic examples
of how quickly fortunes can change when the minority of the population
relax from or disobey restrictions.
On that subject, I was disappointed that there was not a better layout of
tables for diners at our social event. When I saw the set-up I was
tempted to return home but lacked the courage. I will tell you that I was
glad we stayed in two weeks time. We should all know by then if we
have “dodged the bullet”. Having said that, the food was excellent,
service was near-faultless and the company was perfect. I would be
happy to return ….. in safer times.

Some of us are planning to progress the final break of ties with Ashmore City Shopping Centre by removing the rest of our equipment back to our storage shed at the Community Centre. We thank the Centre for the opportunity to set up our “Car Boot” market in the Centre’s Car Park. Whilst some aspects of the project were arduous (I would have been incapable of getting out of bed to do the set-up shift), it was financially rewarding and enabled us to fund some worthwhile local service projects. The loss of that income and that from the carousel has left a big dent in our service budget. Substitute projects will be hard to find. Our Fundraising group is working on it.
I hope that we will get a “full” house on Wednesday to welcome Brooke Patterson, our representative on the Gold Coast City Council. I had the privilege of chatting with Brooke during dinner at the Changeover meeting. She has a history in business management and spent 9 years working in Hong Kong - so she must be at least as bright as me (and Ian Mac). I am looking forward to what she has to say. I am sure we wont get the same style of talk as that delivered by the previous visiting politician.
A late addition as a speaker is Dr Liz Fitzmaurice of the Rotary Club of Griffith Gold Coast who will give us a brief talk on the Paxman Scalp Cooler. A scalp cooler … I am looking forward to finding out what it is!
Please remember to advise Robyn if you wish to attend the meeting. We need numbers for catering.
