ROTARY JOURNEYSMESSAGE

Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms, from supporting studies to helping im-munise people to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure. The world relies on Rotary to tackle these global challenges, and to set an example for others to follow.

There has been a dramatic shift in morbidity and mortality rates in the last fifteen years reflecting a significant decrease in sickness and death from communicable diseases; correspondingly there has been a significant increase in sickness and death from non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs include cancers, heart diseases, diabetes and neurological diseases. They have become the great-est threats and equalizers in global health and account for 80% of all illness and death around the world. As life expectancy has risen around the world, so has the prospect of acquiring what used to be regarded as ‘first world’ diseases?

Rotary’s strengths and accomplishments in the area of disease prevention and treatment include:

• PolioPlus has a strongly developed Rotarian program model in place. This regional and com-munity level model can be utilized extensively in all disease prevention and treatment initiatives throughout the world.

• Rotarians have a proven track record of partnering with local governments and organization in projects addressing HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, polio, dengue and other communicable diseases. These targets remain paramount on the UN SDG agenda.

• The Rotary Foundation has funded almost 2,000 projects and programs to build healthier com-munities all across the world. The Rotarian network remains active in their communities, which presents potential for expanding and scaling up focused programs that emphasize strategic part-nering with governments and the private and NGO sectors.

• Foundation grant activity in disease prevention and treatment demonstrates that Rotarians have broad sector interests and strong local impact. Differing regionally, priority areas of Rotarian involvement include; medical and dental equipment, blindness prevention and treatment, public health and sanitation activities, and nutrition and childhood disease projects. Other successful and popular project types address rehabilitation and physical therapy, malaria, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases, lifesaving and congenital surgeries, and large scale prevention and treat-ment projects targeting diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

• The greatly increasing uses of Rotarian Vocational Training Teams are providing health care training and provision of on-site services in many areas of disease treatment throughout the world.

As you immerse yourself in the December traditions that you cherish and enjoy, may you collect blessings as numerous as the stars. Happy holidays.

Kind regards,Philip Chong Mau Kiong(Rotary Club of Likas Bay)District Governor 2015-16

YOUTH

Greetings fromJESSEY YAPDistrict Rotaract Representative 2015-16

Dear Rotaractors and friends,

My warmest greetings and peace to you all.

It’s the season of Joy and Happiness! It’s all about Christmas giving for this Joyful month of De-cember starting with the Rotaract Club of Northwest who had their Christmas fellowship with some Interactors, Rotarians and friends together with Bizlink Centre Singapore Ltd. clients.

In line with our Rotary motto ‘Fellowship Through Service’, RAC NUS had their professional devel-opment by successfully organising an Occupational Therapy course at Bright Hill Evergreen Home. Meanwhile, RAC Marina City had their Christmas fellowship cum gifts exchange on Christmas day followed by a Christmas celebration together with Rotary Club of Marina City, Rotary Club of Sin-gapore and CDAC Sengkang in Conrad Hotel. All games were planned and executed successfully by Rotaractors from Marina City club. In addition, Rotaract Club of East and West also had their Christmas BBQ plus gift exchange on 19th December 2015.

Rotaractors are still standing strong as one uplifting the motto for this year: ‘Be a gift to the world’. This can be seen as Rotaract Club of Singapore had enthusiastically carried out a program dubbed ‘Beyond Social Services’ where a few weeks back, the children in our community were giv-en cards to write their Christmas wishes on, and unknown to them those wishes would be fulfilled by wonderfully generous corporate sponsors. They managed to coordinate 54 volunteers to deliver close to 400 gifts to children in the five neighbourhoods. Awesome effort, indeed!

For international service, we were honoured to have visits from District 1960, Portugal. Rotaract Club of Singapore had their fellowship over dim sum with their lovely friends David from Rotaract Club of Castelo Branco and Shehan from the Rotaract Club of Colombo (District 3220, Sri Lanka). Rotaract Club of Northwest will be embarking on an international service project in March 2016 to Tanjung Balai Buru Karimun, a small island in Indonesia.

On 13th December 2015, our Rotaractors were proud to help out in an event named SG 50 Jubilee Family Health and Wellness (MDIS) organised by Rotary Club of Tanjong Pagar especially for ba-bies and parents with Dr. Amy Khor as Guest of Honour. This was their final event for the year.

Rotaractors have never ceased in their collective effort in carrying out club activities and fellow-ships for the betterment of all. We look forward to continue working with all Rotaract and Rotary Clubs to serve and inspire others! Let’s continue to serve the community better and ‘Be a gift to the World’.

Enjoy Rotaract and love humanity!

ROTARY DENTAL CLINIC IN BANDIPUR, NEPALRtn. Dr. Madan K. PiyaRotary Club of Patan West, Nepal

Starting the Rotary Dental Clinic in Bandipur Hospital was declared during your visit in March 2015 under District Governor Andre Suharto’s leadership.

Due to various obstacles in the country it was delayed, and finally we were able to start on 20th January 2016. It was inaugurated by Immediate Past District Governor Mr. Rabindra Kumar Piya who was along with us during that time. The facilities include general, filling and scaling.

Because of the lack of funds, RCT has not been started but they are working on it. There were virtually no load shedding before in Bandipur, but now they have it for 6 hours a day. Not bad compared to Kathmandu where we have up to 15 hours a day. It may hamper the quality of service depending upon the time of load shedding. I would like to thank you all for your continuous moral, physical and financial support that you have expressed toward Bandipur.

MEMBERSHIP RESEARCH AND PROGRAMSEffective 1 April 2016, distribution of the pins and backers created for the New Member Sponsor Recognition Program to honor Rotarians who sponsor (admit) new members will be discontinued. Sponsorship activities will continue to be tracked. Sponsor names reported by club officers will continue to be recorded in the RI database, and clubs and districts are encouraged to continue recognizing the sponsorship of new members. RECOGNITION LEVELS AND PINSAfter 29 February 2016, recognition levels such as blue, bronze, silver and gold will no longer be recorded. Distribution of recognition items will stop after all the pins and backers achieved on or before 29 February are processed. Club officers are encouraged to report sponsor information by 29 February in order to claim recognition items. FUTURE OF SPONSORSHIPResponding to feedback from many Rotarians, here are some exciting changes that we are exploring:• Referring a new member admitted to another club may be considered “sponsorship”• Recruiting new members to charter a new club may be considered “sponsorship”• Recruiting transferring or returning members will continue to be considered “sponsorship”• Honorary members may be sponsors• More than one sponsor may be recorded for each new member by club officers

* Officers of the clubs where new members join will be asked to report their sponsors. FUTURE OF SPONSOR RECOGNITIONClubs are encouraged to present recognition items to sponsors on their own and no longer need to wait for the shipment from RI. Please contact your local licensed vendor for options: https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/member-center/licensed-vendors In addition, Rotary will continue to recognize Rotarians who have sponsored new members. Mem-bership Development Award and Presidential Citations will continue to include new member spon-sorship activities as achievements eligible for certificate recognition. Highly prolific sponsors may be honored at the reception during the International Convention for their outstanding achieve-ments. Thank you for your support for membership development.
