Chairman’s Annual Message
I recently saw a message from a large multi-district PETS Training Chair in the United States. He lamented the fact that 46% of the club presidents-elect at that PETS registered for an elective session for Rotarians with three or less years in Rotary. He also noted that 15% of the club presidents-elect were second-time presidents. While these situations may not be same in all parts of the Rotary world, they are certainly common and show the hurdles today of developing ex-cellent leaders for our clubs. It wasn’t too many years ago that you didn’t become a club president until you held a number of club offices that could take many more years than we see to-day. We certainly have many more club presidents who have served before. What this tells us, of course, is that how we prepare Rotarians for club leader-ship is becoming increasingly important. It certainly can’t be done just in a one day or two day PETS. Even where some of the above problems may not generally exist, the one year term of club officers means that we need a steady stream of well-prepared Ro-tarians ready to step in as a club president and be effective from day one. We certainly can’t afford on-the-job training in the short one year time frame. As a grassroots organization, RLI is right on the scene to provide a quality lead-ership development program. I am continually heartened by the outstanding re-ports and excellent course evaluations from our 64 divisions with their 276 member districts that cover 150 countries and geographical regions. (Latest sta-tistics will be announced at the Convention Breakfast.) They continue to show the effectiveness of RLI courses. Our mission is aligned with the first major part of the R.I. Strategic Plan to “support and strengthen Rotary Clubs.” A highlight of this Rotary year has been RLI’s passing the 50% mark of the number of Rotary districts in the world. We have already surpassed our annual expansion goal of 275 member districts and our “quality” and “administrative” goals have also been met. The International Curriculum Committee will be meeting again in January to finalize the 2012-15 curriculum. We are grateful to the thousands of Rotarians who have contributed to the suc-cess of RLI across the Rotary world. It has been said that teachers learn the most and our teachers –discussion leaders – have strengthened their own knowledge of Rotary and the leadership skills needed to move Rotary ahead. We also thank the Governors and other officers of our member districts for their strong support. David Linett, PRID, International Chair www.rotaryleadershipinstitute.org
