The following morning’s blood test showedthat he was suffering from malaria and typhoid. Thedoctor prescribed 13 injections. Patrick has recoveredpretty fast but is still weak. He has to take rest and soI have to complete the family blessings alone.

The first week of April was a hectic one for ourcatechist as he was preparing the children for the FirstCommunion. He was assisted by Sr. Elizabeth DSAand Ms Leoni Topno, a retired teacher. 7 April was agreat day for 30 children who received the EucharisticLord for the first time.

Amidst my busy schedule, I attended the PriestlyOrdination of Fr. Zacharias Bhengra on 11 April in myhome parish, Bichna. For this newly created parish, itwas a historic day as it was the first ordination.

Sushil SJSushil SJSushil SJSushil SJSushil SJTarunoday Regional Theology CentreThe month of April kept the Taruns and their teachersbusy. Soon after their Netarhat visit (22-23 March) andthe Holy Week celebrations, the Taruns cut theirslumber to fare well in their exams before thecommunity could bid farewell to them. Our studentsworked like the Asurs mentioned in the Adivasi mythsbut they shunned greed, pride and jealousy. Not to beleft behind, Br Isidore Ekka enriched himself at theNational Seminar for Brothers in Chennai on theRestoration of the Society. He was back at home timelyon April 13 to bid adieu to the outgoing Taruns. The first year students went for their Arrupe Monthwhereas the second years went back to their provincesbefore they join VJ in July. Taking advantage of thetime, Fr Ignatius Tete conducted a three day BibleSeminar for some three hundred plus catechists ofSimdega diocese at their Pastoral Centre. Armed withnew interpretative tools the zealous catechists headedback to their missions but Fr. Ignatius suffered froman inadvertent food poisoning. But that seldomcurtailed his busy schedule. Fr. John Mundu (JAM)left for Ho-land and Fr. Biju Sebastian (DUM) headedfor his tertianship. Fr. Henry visited his paralyzedsister in Samtoli and was forced to extend his stay thereowing to Simdega bund.

Meanwhile, defying all bunds twelve fourth yearstudents, after their third year at Vidyajyoti, Delhi, rejoined Tarunoday on April 20. They are busypreparing themselves for their comprehensiveexamination that is slated for the third week of June.Fr. Henry re-shelved all the books in the library but about of cerebral malaria pinioned Fr. Francis to hisbed and rendered him exhausted. Br Isidore’s careexpedited his recovery. Birds and heavy constructionworks around us have been over-charitable in wakingus early morning while the parrots tend to feast on ourlitchis before they come to our table.

In our group there were some who had someexperience in Project writing and there were quite manythat had very little or no experience at all. All the sameFr. Winner was able to adjust himself and give the bestof information to all of us. The more experienced werenot bored and new learners were eager to learn moreabout project writing. In a day there were 6 sessionsbut all of us participated whole heartedly. We learnt alot. This was not only a lecture method but learning bydoing. Yes, in the beginning the basic elements ofdifferent important components of Project writing weretaken and explained to us then all the pieces, likepuzzle, were put together to make a good project. We were asked to prepare the Problem Tree andObjective Tree and Logical Framework. Finally, wewere divided in small groups of three and we had todo this exercise which was very helpful to have thelogical framework. We understood that the projectshang on the logical framework very nicely. Whenlogical framework is strong and logical then the wholeproject becomes very meaningful and speaks louderfor the acceptance of the project.

On the fourth day, in groups of three, we wereinvited to prepare a developmental project. To preparethis project many of us spent hours and hours evenat night we worked and the next day there was apresentation of some of the projects. In the eveningwe had a tea party at the Bishop’s House and also atthe Sacred Heart Convent near the Bishop’s House. We had a short outing to the Brahmaputra Riverside in the evening. But again we were back to ourbusiness session by 6.00 p.m.

On the last day the Bishop of Tezpur Diocese wasinvited to give away the certificate of what we hadlearnt. In his speech Bishop Michael Akasius stressedthat in this modern age we do need to learn the art ofpresenting the project in a way that is more acceptableto the different funding agencies and donors. We arevery grateful to Fr. Lord Winner CMF who gave hisbest and shared his ocean of knowledge in this projectwriting field in a very succinct way.

Accommodation at the Jesuit Bhavan was verygood, comfortable and homely. The Conference roomof Gana Chetna Samaj is air conditioned which helpedthe participants to work hard and longer in a veryconducive atmosphere. Meals were served on time andwere very delicious. We are very grateful to the kitchenstaff for their selfless service. We have made a goodbeginning but we have to go a long way before webecome good and experienced project writers.

ROME: The Pope Visits Ignatian PlacesIn the afternoon of Sunday 14 April, at the end ofthe solemn celebration in which he took possession ofthe Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Pope Franciswent to the Basilica’s chapel of the crucifix. That iswhere the XIII century icon of Our Lady TheotokosHodigitria is preserved. It is before this icon, on22 April 1541, that Ignatius and the group of FirstCompanions who were still in Rome (seven peoplein all, for three - Xavier, Rodriguez and Faber - werealready on mission) pronounced their solemnprofession in the Society of Jesus. A few monthsearlier, the Formula of the Society of Jesus had beenapproved by the Pope.

And a few days earlier, Ignatius had accepted hiselection as Superior General of the Society of Jesus,by which the new order was officially established. ThePope was accompanied by the concelebrants, thearchpriest of the Basilica, Card Harvey, the twoarchpriests, emeritus Card Monterisi and CorderoLanza di Montezemolo, and the Benedictine abbot ofSt. Paul. Pope Francis incensed the icon, and remainedbriefly in prayer. It was the second Ignatian place inRome which the Pope has visited: on the morningafter his election, Pope Francis made a private visit tothe Basilica of St Mary Major. There he remainedbriefly in the Sistine Chapel, in whose crypt is thealtar where Ignatius celebrated his first mass.

INDIA: Goa to Invite PopeOfficials of the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa areplanning to invite Pope Francis for the 2014exposition of the remains of the missionary Jesuit,St Francis Xavier. The chances for the first JesuitPontiff to attend are “good”, said Fr Savio Barreto, rector of the Basilica where the mortal remains of thesaint are preserved. He said that Basilica officials havereceived many enquiries about inviting the pope to theevent. During the celebrations, the relics of the saint, which are preserved in a silver casket elevated insidethe Basilica, are exposed by being brought to groundlevel. The exposition generally happens once everyten years: the previous exposition was held inDecember 2004, and it lasts for about one month. Andso, the next is due in November 2014. ”The chancesof Pope Francis coming for the exposition look good.

He may not even need an invitation to visit theresting place of his fellow Jesuit brother,” the priestsaid. St Francis Xavier, who hailed from Navarra inthe Basque region of Spain, brought Christianity toseveral parts of Asia. He arrived in Goa, a Portuguesecolony at the time, in 1542. After his death in 1552, inShangchuan, China, his body was first ferried to

Malacca, in Malaysia, and one year later enshrined inthe grand Basilica of Bom Jesus. Every year, morethan a million believers throng the church complex inOld Goa.
