REAL SALT LAKE v WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS – TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2011

ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OPEN

CUP, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK: Dating back to

1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world … Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 97-year-old single-elimination tournament … The U.S. Open Cup is similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world … Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country‟s league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer … This year again guarantees the “David vs. Goliath” match-ups tournament fans have desired, as the eight MLS teams which advance to the 40-team tournament proper will take on survivors from the USL and amateur ranks during the competition‟s “Round of 16” in mid-June … Since its inception in 1996, Major League Soccer teams have won 14 of the last 15 U.S. Open Cup titles …

MLS TEAMS IN THE “PRO ERA” OPEN CUP:

YOU GOTTA FOLLOW THE RULES … In the Lamar

Hunt U.S. Open Cup, some rules and regulations differ from the MLS regular season … The main change involves the number of substitutions that can be made, as teams can switch four players in Open Cup play rather than the MLS (and FIFA) norm of three … Should a match finish tied at the end of regulation, the game will go to a 30-minute added time session (split into two 15-minute halves) which will be played in their entirety (i.e., NO golden goals) … Should the added time period not yield any scores, the match will be decided by the traditional “kicks from the penalty spot” tiebreaker as mandated per FIFA guidelines …

OPEN CUP ROAD BEGINS: For RSL to achieve its goal

of utilizing an Open Cup title as a means back to the CONCACAF Champions League, it will have to emerge victorious in four games, beginning Tuesday against Wilmington … The winner of the RSL v WIL match will be paired on July 12 in the Quarterfinal Round against the victor of FC Dallas (MLS) vs. Orlando City (USL) … Dallas will host either RSL or the Hammerheads should it win, with RSL host that July 12 game ONLY if Orlando City defeats Dallas … Should Wilmington defeat RSL, it would travel to either Dallas or Orlando City …

The winner of RSL v WIL will continue down the Open Cup road with potential dates of July 12 (QF), Aug. 30 (SF) and October 4 (Final) …

LHUSOC DEMONS EXORCISED?: San Jose‟s Buck

Shaw Stadium has been the site of several milestones for RSL annals in just two visits in this young 2010 season … The April 14 win was RSL‟s first-ever road result in Open Cup play, officially a 3-3 draw, but advancing 5-3 on PKs (Incidentally, the 1997 Open Cup title won by Lagerwey/Kreis/Cassar was also a 5-3 PK win after 0-0 regulation/OT finish) …

„BOMMA‟ TO THE RESCUE: When RSL has needed

late-game heroics to advance in U.S. Open Cup play, MF Andy Williams has answered the call … The now 14-year MLS veteran has scored in all three of RSL‟s LHUSOC wins, including the overtime game-winning goals in a pair of 2-1 wins: a 3

rd Round triumph over the USL-1 Virginia Beach

Mariners in 2006 and in the first of two “play-in” contests in 2007 against the K.C. Wizards … Williams also capped the scoring with a 90

th minute finish in RSL‟s first 2008 qualifying

game, a 4-0 triumph over the San Jose Earthquakes last April 30 …

VICTORY … ERR, EQUALITY GOLD KITS?: RSL

wore its so-called “Victory Gold” 3rd

kits for the fourth time in team history at Dallas on May 22, earning road draws on each occasion … Last year, RSL drew 1-1 @ KC and 1-1 @ PHI in a pair of August games in the Real Gold uniforms, while in this season‟s lone previous display of sartorial splendor, Jason Kreis‟ team drew 2-2 at Monterrey in the first leg of the 2010/11 CCL Final … Expect to see the “Equality Gold” kits in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play and perhaps on the late September trip to New York and Washington, D.C. …

REAL SALT LAKE v WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS – TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2011

IN SEARCH OF A TROPHY: In its history, Real Salt

Lake has registered a 3-6-1 all-time Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup record (18 GF / 22 GA) in the competition‟s games/qualifiers across 2005-10 … That record includes five qualifiers: last June‟s 1-2 (aet) loss at D.C. United; last April‟s 3-3 draw (5-3 PKs to advance) at San Jose; the 1-4 road loss at Seattle to the eventual Open Cup champions; and 2008‟s 4-0 home win over then-expansion Earthquakes and the subsequent 0-2 loss @ Columbus … As RSL embarks on its possible four-game road to the 2011 title, following is a year-by-year rundown of RSL‟s previous runs in U.S. Soccer‟s national championship tourney: 2010: Despite entering the year as the defending MLS Cup Champions, RSL was forced on the road to pursue Open Cup hardware due to its 11-12-7 regular-season MLS mark in 2009 … Last April 14 at San Jose, RSL stormed out to a 2-0 lead at Buck Shaw Stadium with goals by FW Robbie Findley and MF Nelson Gonzalez, but it was former Earthquake and current RSL player Arturo Alvarez that led the SJ comeback, scoring in the 88‟ to force overtime and assisting on a goal in 103‟ to give the „Quakes the lead … RSL battled back in OT, DF Nat Borchers heading home a Robbie Russell cross in the 118‟ to force PKs, where RSL won 5-3, GK Kyle Reynish saving the Alvarez effort in the 1

st frame to make the difference …

Last June, RSL played at RFK Stadium against D.C. United to determine the final MLS spot in the Open Cup proper, just days before visiting the White House to celebrate its MLS Cup win in 2009 … With FW Robbie Findley away at the World Cup, captain Kyle Beckerman and perennial starters Andy Williams and Chris Wingert unavailable, RSL started a 4-5-1 with new faces and players in new positions … After a scoreless first 60 minutes, both sides wilting in extreme heat and humidity, RSL inserted MF Javier Morales, FW Fabian Espindola and FW Alvaro Saborio in the 63‟ to inject life into the RSL attack, switching back to the 4-4-2 diamond … D.C. scored first, however, on a 75‟ PK, as rookie MF Collen Warner was adjudged to have handled a Chris Pontius shot following a stellar Reynish save … RSL MF Will Johnson answered back with a PK of his own just 8 minutes later, and the sides went to extra time … Teenage RSL MF Luis Gil made his debut for the squad entering to start the OT, but it was another teen phenom – United‟s Andy Najar – that came on for the final 15 minutes and provided the goal that sent D.C. on to the tourney proper … 2009: RSL kicked off its qualifying road for the 2009 LHUSOC at Starfire Complex in Tukwila, WA, the Sounders‟ training field … Expansion Seattle won a coin toss to host RSL, the Western Conference finalist from the year prior … The Sounders scored goals three minutes apart – in each half – to tally a 4-1 win over RSL, Sebastian LeToux tallying two goals and two assists … MF Will Johnson scored an unassisted goal in the 32

nd minute to cut the Sounders lead

in half after goals by LeToux (24‟) and Sanna Nyassi (26‟), but Roger Levesque (53‟) and LeToux (55‟) followed up in the 2

nd half …

2008: RSL kicked off its qualifying prospects for the 2008 U.S. Open Cup with a dominating, 4-0 late-April win at Rice-Eccles, as RSL MF Kyle Beckerman got the ball rolling with goals in the 21

st and 33

rd minutes … RSL would then punish

the „Quakes off the kick-off seconds later, as FW Yura Movsisyan converted the turnover into RSL‟s second goal inside the minute to put the game out of reach … RSL MF Andy Williams made sure he maintained his Open Cup scoring mastery, slotting home in the 90

th minute to close out

the scoring … GK Chris Seitz saw his initial first-team action of 2008 and recorded his first career clean sheet with his four-save effort … A month later in Columbus, Crew goals by Steven Lenhart (26‟) and Robbie Rogers (53‟) sandwiched around a 49

th-minute Dema Kovalenko red card ended

RSL‟s 2008 Open Cup chances … 2007: RSL kicked off its run to the 2007 U.S. Open Cup on by taking a 2-1 overtime victory over the Kansas City Wizards in a “play-in” contest … A Jeff Cunningham penalty kick a dozen minutes in appeared as if it would stand tall, but a goal by KC‟s Sasha Victorine in the 88

th minute

would send the match to added extra time … In the game‟s 109

th minute, Andy Williams again was the hero, finishing a

nifty give-and-go from 15 yards out to lift RSL … In the next round, however, for the second consecutive season, RSL‟s Open Cup run ended at the hands of the hated Colorado Rapids, as two Jacob Peterson goals, including one 3 minutes into stoppage time, led the Rapids to a 2-1 win over RSL … Chris Klein scored the 64

th-minute equalizer in

Jason Kreis‟ Open Cup coaching debut, but it wasn‟t enough to send the game into OT … 2006: Real Salt Lake saw added time once again in its 2006 USOC opener against another USL-1 side, Virginia Beach Mariners, but this time it was RSL getting the goal in overtime, as Andy Williams’ 93

rd-minute strike lifted the

MLS side to a 2-1 win in the Third Round, marking its first-ever USOC victory … RSL‟s run would be a short one, as the Utah side had the better of the play at home against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado, but the Rapids‟ Peterson got the only goal in a 1-0 win in a 4

th Round affair

… 2005: RSL saw its inaugural run in the 2005 Open Cup end abruptly, as tournament upstart Minnesota Thunder overcame a Jason Kreis hat trick – the only 3-goal performance in RSL history in all competitions, prior to Robbie Findley‟s effort in April „09 – to post a wild 6-4 upset in a Third Round match the USL First Division side took to a 30-minute added time session thanks to an 88

th minute

equalizer …

REAL SALT LAKE v WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS – TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2011

TIME TO MAKE A MOVE: While Real Salt Lake has

played fewer games to this point than any other Major League Soccer side, the next 10 games (5 home, 5 away) in July/August will define the campaign for Jason Kreis’ side, which has battled key injuries, Gold Cup absences and CONCACAF Champions League disappointment since late April … Of the next 10 MLS opponents, only 3 have a winning record entering this week (7/9 v DAL; 7/23 v SJ; 8/6 v NY), while one team is an even .500 (7/30 v CLB) … RSL faces all of those sides at home, while the remaining eight foes are currently sub-.500 squads (NE, @VAN, @KC, @TOR, @HOU and @CHV) … RSL has managed only five points in its last three games against sub-.500 sides DC, @CHI and TOR …

SABO ANNOUNCES RETURN WITH

AUTHORITY: RSL FW Alvaro Saborio scored two

goals in Saturday‟s 3-1 win over Toronto FC in his first appearance in MLS action since May 22 at Dallas, his first MLS goals since October 23, 2010 at Colorado in the final regular-season game last year … The Costa Rican forward – RSL‟s first-ever and lone “Designated Player” – had last scored for the Claret-and-Cobalt back on March 22 at home in a 2-0 win over his former Saprissa club in CONCACAF Champions League … At this year‟s Gold Cup, “Sabo” scored in the Ticos‟ opener against Cuba, but missed two PKs – one in regulation, one in a tiebreaker – against Honduras in the Quarterfinal stage …

YOUR ASSISTANCE, PLEASE: While Saborio‟s

heroics earned headlines, those goals – nor the dominate performance against Toronto – would have been possible without the selfless passing game that RSL is known for, as two players – Captain Kyle Beckerman and DF Robbie Russell – each tallied multiple assists on the night, only the 2

nd and 3

rd multi-assist performances for

RSL this MLS season, and the first since Collen Warner tallied both helpers on April 9 at New England … Beckerman‟s corner kick in the 39‟ found onrushing DF Nat Borchers for the header that broke the scoreless deadlock … Three minutes later, Beckerman found Russell on the right wing, and the veteran right back sliced the ball into the box, where Saborio simply tapped it home … Russell completed his evening on the scoresheet with a lofted diagonal ball that set up Sabo alone in the box with Toronto „keeper Stefan Frei, where he buried the effort to put RSL up 3-0 …

RSL “BRACING” FOR SUCCESS: With FW Alvaro

Saborio‟s two-goal „brace‟ on Saturday vs TOR, RSL has now seen 19 of its 28 multi-goal performances occur at home in its 199-game MLS regular-season game and 12-game CCL history … The multi-goal game was Saborio‟s 6

th cross all competitions, ahead of Jeff Cunningham (5)

and Javier Morales‟ tie with Robbie Findley with four “braces,” while Yura Movsisyan and Jason Kreis each had 2, ahead of Paulo Junior, Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Atiba Harris, Chris Brown and Fabian Espíndola, who have each also scored 2 or more times in a game … When an RSL player scores 2 or more goals in a game, the team has posted a 20-3-4 all-time mark … Besides the 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul in CCL play and the 4-6 loss at Minnesota in Open Cup action, when was the lone MLS loss? … June 17, 2007, when Chris Brown‟s brace @LA was wasted in a 2-3 loss: G Player Date Opponent Result

DEFENSE STILL DOMINATES … : Led by GK Nick

Rimando, the 2010 MLS Best XI center-back pairing of DF Nat Borchers and DF Jamison Olave and Captain Kyle Beckerman, the vaunted RSL defense has allowed one goal or fewer in 13 of its 15 MLS games this season, allowing just 9 goals thus far, including two on PKs … Last year, RSL allowed just 20 goals in the 30-game regular season, setting a new standard in MLS annals and breaking the 2007 Houston Dynamo record … Rimando recorded his 81

st career shutout on June 22

@CHI, 45 of which have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando has seven of RSL‟s league-high eight MLS clean sheets in 2011 (Reynish, April 9 @ NE), matching Dallas‟ total of eight (Kevin Hartman) … Rimando also had two shutouts in CONCACAF play earlier this year at Columbus and v Saprissa …

REAL SALT LAKE v WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS – TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2011

RSL REWIND: SCORELESS IN CHICAGO: Last

Wednesday‟s scoreless draw was the 21st in RSL‟s 245-

game history, and was the third of the relatively young season for Jason Kreis‟ team … Back in mid-May‟s “Texas Two-Step,” RSL suffered back-to-back scoreless draws vs HOU and @ DAL, the Utah side’s first in nearly four years, since 5/27 & 6/2 of 2007 in road games @ NE and @ CHI, Jason Kreis‟ 4

th & 5

th games at the RSL helm …

ROAD OPTIMISM: Despite the late collapse at

Columbus and the difficult start at Philadelphia, Real Salt Lake – once the worst road team in the history of MLS – has earned points in 15 of its last 18 road games – the equivalent of an entire season – dating back to May, 2010 … The road forays have been low-scoring, as RSL has outscored opponents 14-12 goals in that span – while Jason Kreis‟ team has dropped just six of its last 28 overall if you include CONCACAF and MLS Cup Playoff road matches (and one loss, April 5 at Saprissa, still clinched the series for RSL) …

This recent advent of road success places the squad‟s all-time regular season road mark at 16-57-25 (.260; 89 GF / 164 GA) … Since Kreis took over, RSL‟s MLS road mark is 12-33-20, with the four road wins in 2010 doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons … Seven games down (2-2-3, 9 pts), 10 to go in 2011 …

YOUNG BOYS STEP UP, SEIZE THE DAY: The

void caused by injury, national team duty and suspension has allowed an opportunity for several of RSL‟s younger players to get quality minutes with the first team, as DF Chris Schuler, MF Nelson Gonzalez and MF Collen Warner are obvious choices, along with “baptism-by-fire” choices FW Artur Aghasyan and MF Luis Gil … Gonzalez‟ goal against Seattle on May 28 – his second MLS goal and third in an RSL uniform – was set up by teen phenom Gil, who has impressed at U.S. U-18 and U-20 camps this year in addition to his RSL duty … Gil received his first-ever MLS start June 11 at Philadelphia, playing 83 minutes in his 6

th MLS game

… He matched that 83 minutes off the bench on June 22 at Chicago in place of an injured Espindola, then started and played a full 90 at forward on Saturday in tandem with Saborio in the 3-1 win over Toronto … Gil had also started and played 45 minutes in the 3-1 home win over Cruz Azul last October, while his most extensive previous experience in an RSL uniform prior to that CCL game was his final 30 minutes in the Open Cup qualifier at D.C. United last June, won by D.C. 2-1 …

THREE-GAME WEEKS CONCLUDE: Real Salt Lake

concluded a three-game MLS week earlier this month at Philadelphia with a 1-1-1 mark, the second time this season the team has played three games in 8 days or fewer … Earlier this year, RSL played at Saprissa, at New England and then home to Colorado, winning the latter two and advancing with a goal in the 1-2 loss in Costa Rica … That trip represented the first time RSL ever won the second game of back-to-backs on the road … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL has played 3 games in a week a total of 18 times (in all competitions), registering a 23-16-17 record, including last week … The June 22 D.C. match kicked off the next stanza of three MLS games in eight days, with RSL missing up to five potential starters (MF Javier Morales & FW Paulo Jr. due to injury; FW Alvaro Saborio, MF Will Johnson and MF Arturo Alvarez due to Gold Cup fatigue) … As indicated in RED below, RSL is 5-0-1 when closing out a 3-game week at home, winning its last four-in-a-row … The list: 2011: 4/5 @ SAP (1-2 L); 4/9 @ NE (2-0 W); 4/13 v COL (1-0 W) 2-1-0 6/4 v VAN (2-0 W); 6/8 @ CLB (1-2 L); 6/11 @ PHI (1-1 T) 1-1-1 6/18 v DC (1-1 T); 6/22 @ CHI (1-1 T); 6/25 v TOR (3-1 W) 1-0-2 7/30 v CLB / 8/3 @ KC / 8/6 v NY *5 games in 15 days from Sept. 17 – Oct. 1 9/17 v KC; 9/21 @ NY; 9/24 @DC 9/28 v CHI; 10/1 @ LA 2010: 4/10 v SEA (2-2 T); 4/14 @ SJ (3-3 T); 4/17 @ LA (1-2 L) 0-1-2 5/29 v KC (4-1 W); 6/2 @ DC (1-2 L aet); 6/5 @ DC (0-0 T) 1-1-1 8/7 @ KC (1-1 T); 8/11 @ PHI (1-1 T); 8/14 v CLB (2-0 W) 1-0-2 9/15 v TOR (4-1 W); 9/18 v CHI (1-0 W); 9/22 @ AUO (3-2 W) 3-0-0 9/25 v COL (1-1 T); 9/28 @ TOR (1-1 T); 10/2 @ NE (2-1 W) 1-0-2 10/16 v DA (2-0 W); 10/19 v CAZ (3-1 W); 10/23 @ COL (2-2 T) 2-0-1

REAL SALT LAKE v WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS – TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2011

ESPINDOLA LATEST TO GO DOWN: RSL Head

Coach Jason Kreis has been forced to go deep into his bench for attacking options, as FW Fabian Espindola – who had scored three goals in the four games leading up to Wednesday‟s match in Chicago – suffered a hamstring injury just 7 minutes into the Fire contest … Already on the shelf were FW Paulo Jr. (injury); FW Alvaro Saborio (R knee swelling / Gold Cup exhaustion); FW Arturo Alvarez (R hamstring strain / Gold Cup exhaustion); FW Cody Arnoux (R knee ACL); and even converted MF Jean Alexandre, who had filled in admirably during Gold Cup as a target striker but was suspended by the MLS Disciplinary Committee just prior to the team‟s departure for Chicago due to an “egregious” tackle … Already suffering from the long-term injury to playmaker Javier Morales, RSL was forced to play nearly the entire Chicago match with apprentice FW Artur Aghasyan – signed on May 27 – who was making his first career MLS start and only his fourth appearance, and teenage phenom MF Luis Gil, who came on in the 7‟ for Espindola and saw 83 minutes up top, his most extensive action in a brief MLS career that had included just one start, back on June 11 in Philadelphia, prior to Gil‟s 90-minute effort Saturday against Toronto …

ATTACK LACKING PIZZAZZ: Due to the onslaught

of injuries, suspension and Gold Cup duty, and despite the three-goal outburst Saturday, RSL has still scored only 10 goals in the 9 games played since MF Javier Morales went down, after scoring a league-high 45 goals in 2010 …

Kreis has continually praised FW Fabian Espíndola for stepping up and assuming the team‟s creative mantle in the absence of teammate and close friend Morales since the RSL talisman‟s devastating injury … On June 22 vs. D.C. United, Espindola tallied his team-high fourth goal of the season with a 38‟ PK after a United handball in the box … The goal was Fabian’s 20

th of his RSL career,

vaulting him into sole possession of 2nd

place in the RSL scoring annals with Jeff Cunningham, now 9 behind leader Robbie Findley (29) … Espíndola is past halfway to his career season-high total of six goals scored in 22 games last year, and has matched his output of three goals in 22 games during RSL‟s Cup-winning 2009 campaign … The fiesty Argentine scored twice in nine appearances during RSL’s 2010/11 CCL run, and had a blistering effort to open last year‟s MLS Cup Playoffs at Dallas, his only career postseason goal in 8 appearances …

IRON MAN BORCHERS PASSES CENTURY

MARK: 2010 MLS Best XI DF Nat Borchers made his

101st regular-season appearance for RSL in Wednesday‟s

0-0 draw at Chicago … Earlier this year, both DF Chris Wingert (111) and MF Kyle Beckerman (106) surpassed the century mark for the Claret-and-Cobalt … With 21 games remaining this season, DF Jamison Olave (currently at 85 appearances) and MF Javier Morales (93) have a shot at joining this exclusive club, of which MF Andy Williams (170) and GK Nick Rimando (123) are already members … Borchers has played a full 90 minutes in 12 of the team‟s 14 MLS matches and 5 of the 6 CCL games this Spring … Borchers has amassed a minimum of 2600 minutes each of the last three regular seasons, now appearing in 101 of a possible 104 league games since arriving on the Wasatch Front in 2008, sitting out only 4/9 @ NE and 6/8 @ CLB this year … Borchers has also started all nine MLS Cup Playoff games for RSL the last three seasons, played in all three US Open Cup matches and in 10 of the 12 CCL games …

MAYDAY, MAYDAY: 12-MONTH RUN OF

SUCCESS ON MULTIPLE FRONTS: Despite the pair

of difficult 0-1 losses vs. Monterrey and at Portland in the final week of April, Real Salt Lake performed exceptionally in the 45 games played between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, losing only six times in that stretch, the rough equivalent of a season-and-a-half … Across MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoff and CONCACAF Champions League games, Jason Kreis‟ team posted an impressive mark of 26-6-13 and outscored opponents 75-33 since May 1, 2010 … RSL would have earned 91 points in this stretch … The MLS equivalents: (reg.-season games only) TEAM GAME 1 GAME 45 PTS

Los Angeles Galaxy 7/04/1997 9/02/1998 95

D.C. United 5/21/2005 7/22/2006 91

Chicago Fire 6/04/2000 9/01/2001 90

Prior to last April 30 at Portland, the lone MLS losses both came on the road at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30, sandwiched around the bizarre 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul … The fourth loss was the 1-2 decision at Saprissa which enabled RSL to advance to the CCL Final … RSL then dropped the 0-1 home game to Monterrey to snap the 37-game “all-competition” Rio Tinto Stadium streak …

LATE DRAMA PART OF RSL DNA: MF Will

Johnson‟s 87‟ game-winning goal vs. Chivas way back on May 7 marked the 16

th all-time go-ahead scored by RSL in

the final 15 minutes of a regular-season MLS or CCL game … Two of the three RSL goals scored prior to that – Espindola‟s 93+ game-winner v COL and Morales‟ late equalizer at Monterrey – also meet the dramatic criteria … All-time lists for equalizers and GWG (active players in bold; last 30 games in red):

TIME FOR A NEW STREAK: In Major League

Soccer‟s 16-year history, there have been 25 double-digit unbeaten regular-season streaks for its teams … Real Salt Lake’s historic 2010 season saw the squad amass runs of both 10 and 14 games, with the mid-April win vs. Colorado extending the latter streak to 18 games without a loss, one of the top three streaks in MLS history, just one game shy of matching the League standard … A year ago, FC Dallas matched the Columbus Crew’s 19-game run by not losing for 4 ½ months, then saw it crash to a halt by dropping an 0-2 decision at Rio Tinto Stadium … Dallas had the last laugh, however, ousting RSL in the teams‟ first-round MLS Cup Playoff matchup with a 3-2 aggregate win in October … The list:

MORALES A MARKED MAN IN MLS: Since arriving

in MLS back in August of 2007, the Argentine playmaker Javier Morales has played 116 games for RSL (93 MLS regular-season, 8 playoff, 3 Open Cup, 12 CCL) … During that time, he has been the most-fouled player in the League (reg. season only), an indicator of his role in RSL‟s possession game as well as the target on his back by opposing defenses … The list:

Most Fouls Suffered since 8/29/2007:

ALL-TIME RESULTS, WITHOUT JAVIER: Since the

talismanic Argentine Javier Morales‟ arrival on the Wasatch Front, RSL has played 34 MLS regular-season/playoff, CCL or Open Cup games without its playmaker, posting a 13-10-12 overall mark … Head Coach Jason Kreis‟ team has gone 10-9-9 in MLS reg. season play, 0-0-1 Playoff, 3-0-0 in CONCACAF and 0-1-1 in Open Cup sans Javi … Since the beginning of the 2009 season, that record is 11-7-10, including a surprising ability to score 2+ goals in 12 of those 28 games without Javier … The breakdown: DATE OPP. SEEING RED, BUT TO LITTLE ADVANTAGE:

Back on May 7, Real Salt Lake saw an opponent hit with multiple red cards for the third time in the team’s 190-game MLS regular-season history, with the 65-minute span with at least a one-man advantage the longest in club annals … For an incredible amount of 49 minutes, RSL enjoyed a TWO-MAN advantage over Chivas USA, playing 11-v-9 in deadlocked fashion prior to Will Johnson’s victory-clinching goal in the 87

th minute … On only one

prior occasion – Oct. 18, 2008, in the 2nd

-ever game at Rio Tinto Stadium – had RSL enjoyed a 2-man advantage over its opponent, but that was just for stoppage time of the team‟s 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, a game known primarily for Johnson‟s 2008 MLS Goal of the Year blast …

OTHER RED CARD MISCELLANY: In its history, RSL

has never played with just nine men due to disciplinary issues, and has even scored FIVE short-handed goals (Jason Kreis, 7/4/05 v. NY; Chris Klein & Kreis, 9/16/06 v. DAL; a Chris Leitch own-goal on 7/3/09 v. SJ; and Nelson Gonzalez late goal on 5/28/11 v. SEA) … On 25 occasions, RSL opponents have been subject to ejection, giving the Claret-and-Cobalt a total of 424 minutes with a man-advantage … During those minutes, RSL has seen a +9 goal difference … On the other hand, RSL has been victim of 29 red cards, succumbing to a -9 goal difference in a total of 569 minutes playing a man down … Incredibly, SIX of those nine goals came in one game, the 0-6 loss @NY in August 2006 when DF Jack Stewart was tossed in the 8

th minute

… in that game, RSL made it to halftime tied 0-0, but allowed an Edson Buddle hat trick in a 21-minute span of the 2

nd half, with another three goals scored during the

final 45 minutes …

* RSL advances 3-2 on aggregate

RSL‟S INTERNATIONAL HISTORY: With the late

April 0-1 loss to Monterrey in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Final, RSL is now 12-7-6 all-time in international contests, with a positive goal differential (43 goals for / 33 goals against) … In meaningful int‟l competition, RSL is now 6-3-3 (26 GF / 17 GA) … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL falls to 8-3-2 vs. visiting international squads (does NOT include Toronto FC league matches; however, DOES include CCL games vs Columbus) …

KREIS CONTRACT EXTENDED THRU 2013: On

March 24, RSL President Bill Manning and GM Garth Lagerwey announced that the club has extended by two years the contract of current Head Coach Jason Kreis, keeping the youngest MLS Cup-winning manager in League history on the RSL sideline through the completion of the 2013 season … All-time, Kreis now owns a 53-44-37 mark in MLS regular-season, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League play …

Under Kreis‟ leadership, RSL became the first-ever MLS team (and one of just three non-Mexican teams) to win a CONCACAF group, posting a 4-1-1 mark and becoming the first-ever MLS side to advance CCL Final … The former striker‟s 2010 side was also the second-highest-scoring team in CONCACAF‟s group stage, with 17 goals in six games (2.83 goals/game) … During MLS play in 2010, the following numbers established by RSL set or tied new single-season league standards: fewest goals allowed (20), overall goal differential (+25), total home points (37), fewest home losses (0) and fewest home goals allowed (7). In addition to those league benchmarks, last year‟s edition set franchise-high records in wins (15), goals (45), scoring output (1.50/game), points (56), shutouts (15), road points (19) and road goal differential (+1) …

HOW DOES RSL GET BACK IN?: RSL probably

won‟t play another international side – exhibition or otherwise – until the 2012/13 CONCACAF tourney, which it could only qualify for through the following domestic-based mechanisms: U.S. Open Cup winner, 2011 MLS Supporters Shield winner, or MLS Cup 2011 participant … Had RSL defeated Dallas in last year‟s MLS Cup Playoff series, or even had Los Angeles advanced in place of Dallas to MLS Cup – RSL would have qualified for this year‟s CONCACAF Champions League due to LA essentially owning “dual” slots (Supp. Shield / Cup participant) and RSL finishing #2 in last year‟s overall MLS table …

FORTRESS STOOD STRONG FOR FORTY-TWO:

With RSL‟s 1-2 loss at home May 28 against Seattle, the team saw its MLS home unbeaten streak perish at 29 games … Just a month earlier on April 27, the 0-1 CCL loss to Monterrey (MEX) last week snapped the club’s overall home unbeaten run at 37 games across MLS, CCL and exhibition play … While those two losses in a one-month span dropped RSL to 5-1-0 at home in CONCACAF play, the team remains 22-1-10 in MLS regular season, 1-0-1 playoffs and 2-0-1 in international exhibitions … The aggregate scoreline in those games?: 83-23 …

RMC TIES: The June 6, 2009 Fox Soccer Channel

telecast went to multiple commercial breaks during Elder Gonzalez‟ lengthy “consecration” of the field, much to the disdain of current Rapids‟ coach Gary Smith … RSL‟s all-time home mark PRIOR to Elder Gonzalez' "consecration" – just 25-21-19 … AFTER Elder Gonzalez' June 6, 2009 prayer at Rio Tinto Stadium – now 29 wins, 1 loss, 12 ties … Real Salt Lake Year-by-Year Home Results (Regular Season) 2005: 5-8-3 (.406) 18 pts. 19 GF / 24 GA (-5 GD) 2006: 6-4-6 (.563) 24 pts. 23 GF / 19 GA (+4 GD) 2007: 4-7-4 (.400) 16 pts. 18 GF / 22 GA (-4 GD) 2008: 8-1-6 (.733) 30 pts. 24 GF / 10 GA (+14 GD) 2009: 9-1-5 (.750) 32 pts. 34 GF / 11 GA (+23 GD) 2010: 11-0-4 (.867) 37 pts. 31 GF / 7 GA (+24 GD) 2011: 5-1-2 (.750) 17 pts. 13 GF / 5 GA (+8 GD) CAREER: 48-22-30 (.630) 162 GF / 98 GA (+64 GD)

Including the recent 29-game MLS unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium, RSL has dropped just 5 of its last 62 home games (39-5-18) across MLS regular season / playoff and CONCACAF play dating back to the start of 2008 … Prior to that, RSL was 15-19-13 on Utah soil in MLS competition, with a -5 goal differential (60 GF / 65 GA) from 2005-07 … The 2010 RSL side was just the 2

nd MLS team to remain

unbeaten at home in an entire season, joining the 2005 SJ Earthquakes (9-0-7) … Since June „09, RSL is 20-0-8 at home in regular-season play, the longest such run in League history: TEAM # START STOP
