They’ll share their experiences on making positive connections with real life examples and practical tips, followed by a Q&A session. Create a collaborative comic with your fellow workshoppers using warm up exercises, straightforward techniques and endless possibilities. Suitable for ages 7+ 14.00 - 16.00 MAKE YOUR MARK with BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY Try your hand at some experimental mark making with University of Brighton illustration students Ella Willson-Smith and Lucia Vinti. Create accidental and interesting compositions through experimentation and play, collaborative mono-printing, stamping, wax resist and more, you’ll then be able to take your finished pieces away as a folded poster-zine! 16.30 - 18.30 FACE TO FACE with KITOKIA GRAFIKA Take part in this fast and fun portrait drawing activity suitable for all ages with Lithuanian comic publishers and creators Kitokia Grafika. Observe your partner’s face for one minute, but once they’re gone, you have only two minutes to draw their portrait! A great introduction to character design and live drawing - see how good/terrible/amusing your visual memory really is. 16.30 - 18.30 COM-MIX with KINGSTON UNIVERSITY Allow a story to unravel in unexpected ways in this relaxed exercise with the aim of encouraging creativity, storytelling and problem-solving skills. Come and make a loose and experimental comic with a partner/friend/ the person you happen to be sat next to, led by illustration students from BA Illustration Animation at Kingston School of Art. Suitable for ages 7+ TALKS SCHOOL ROOMS 12.30 - 13.45 FLATPACK SCREENING: BELONGING Our friends at Flatpack Festival present two specially curated programmes for ELCAF. The first, Belonging, explores the relationships that shape us, including animations Cat Days by Jon Frickey, which follows a boy’s trip to the doctor, and Siqi Song’s Sister, the story of a man’s nostalgic memories of early years shared with his annoying sibling. 14.00 - 15.15 SPEAKING UP AND SPEAKING OUT: THE ROLE OF COMICS AND ILLUSTRATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY Join Warren Bernard, Director of Small Press Expo in Maryland as he chairs a panel exploring the ways in which comics and illustration can act as a platform to represent groups, address topics and answer the biases of our times. Panellists include Rui Tenreiro, Francesca Sanna and comics publisher/not-for-profit organisation Samandal. 15.30 - 16.45 FLATPACK SCREENING: METAMORPHOSIS The second of Flatpack Festival’s selections for ELCAF this year explores animation as the art of metamorphosis. This selection of films play with forms, shapes and movements, from Boris Labbé’s The Fall, and Swiss animator Michael Frei’s Kids, a film about group dynamics, conceived also as a video game. 17.00 - 18.15 BROKEN FRONTIER PANEL: INDIE COMICS, TAKING NEW CREATORS TO NEW AUDIENCES Join Broken Frontier’s Editor-in-Chief Andy Oliver as he chairs a panel of comics artists, activists and publishers to discuss their experiences of bringing comics to wider readerships, how to champion new creative voices, and thoughts on how you can raise the profile of your own work. Featuring Hannah Berry, Jayde Perkin, Aleesha Nandhra and Katriona Chapman of Avery Hill Publishing. TALKS TENT 12.30 - 13.30 TARA BOOTH: THE RISK AND REWARDS OF VULNERABILITY IN COMICS Philadelphia based artist Tara Booth joins us at ELCAF this year to discuss her life and work through mental health and comics. She’ll explore issues surrounding fear and vulnerability, and the ways in which opening up and taking risks helped both her career and her own mental health journey. 13.45 - 14.45 MARÍA MEDEM: FIELD RECORDINGS Join artist María Medem as she discusses the beauty of ambiguity and mystery within illustration. Using examples of her work and her own influences, she’ll discuss ways of working with real subjects in order to create different atmospheres. 15.00 - 16.00 JAYDE PERKIN: COMICS AS GRAPHIC MEDICINE Illustrator and comics artist Jayde Perkin will share the process of her new book I’m Not Ready, and talk us through her journey since winning 2018’s ELCAF X WeTransfer Award. She will also discuss comics as graphic medicine; using art and narrative as a vehicle for exploring complicated feelings and emotions, particularly grief. 16.15 - 17.15 RUI TENREIRO: CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN COMICS Join author, illustrator and art director Rui Tenreiro as he chats about comic artists from Southern and Eastern Africa with Nobrow’s Sam Arthur. Focuses will include the post- revolution, government sponsored comics from 1980’s Mozambique, Mozambican comics today (including Rui’s own work), Tanzanian comics from Dar es Salaam, and the South African comics of Mogorosi Motshumi and the Capetonian collective K.I.F. 17.30 - 18.30 FRANCESCA SANNA: SHARING YOUR FEARS Join illustrator and designer Francesca Sanna as she discusses the processes behind her latest book Me and My Fear. She’ll reflect particularly on the few months she spent working with a research group from Birkbeck University and how that led to and influenced the design and story. WORKSHOPS MAIN HALL 12.15 - 13.45 COLOUR, SHAPE, LAND, PRINT with TOM HAUGOMAT Paris-based artist Tom Haugomat will be running a stencil workshop based on his own work and illustrations. Learn how landscapes are created and developed through foreground and background imagery, and make your own stencils and personal compositions. Suitable for ages 7+ 14.00 - 15.30 JUNK MODELLING WEATHERVANE with OKIDO Come and join OKIDO Studio to make your very own weathervane in this junk modelling workshop. Using drawing, collage and modelling techniques, and with the help of scrap and junk materials, create a glorious weathervane for a plant pot with the OKIDO creative team. Sit it on a windowsill at home and watch the breeze come in! 15.45 - 17.15 THE SILLY BALLET with CARLES PORTA Download a free Stop Motion Studio app (via iTunes) on your phone in order to take part in a silly ELCAF animated ballet run by illustrator, animator and graphic designer Carles Porta. Make a cardboard paper puppet and learn how to bring it to life through steps, jumps or dance! 17.30 - 19.00 THE POWER OF THE DOODLE 3: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE SCRIBBLE with NICK WHITE Artist, Illustrator, lecturer and full time doodler Nick White returns yet again with his ever popular doodle workshop. These fun collaborative games will see you embrace mindless doodling, discovering new ideas through making, rather than thinking. Instead of staring at a blank piece of paper let go of expectations and enjoy the freedom of the doodle! Suitable for ages 10+ WORKSHOPS TENT 12.15 - 14.45 PIÑATA with HOLLY ST CLAIR: ELCAF is like a big illustration party, and no party is complete without a piñata. Join illustrator Holly St Clair in creating a fun and easy piñata by turning simple illustrations into three dimensional objects. Suitable for ages 10+ 15.00 - 19.00 HATO PRESS: 2-COLOUR BAUHAUS PRINTING What is ELCAF without riso? Our friends at Hato Press will be running a drop-in riso printing workshop and bringing their riso printer with them for the ride. Celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus and create your own unique riso-print through cutting, pasting, collage and mark making, resulting in a personalised notebook. TALKS TENT 13.00 - 14.00 DESIGN FOR TODAY: THE NEXT CHAPTER Small Press publisher Joe Pearson launched Design For Today at ELCAF back in 2015. Join Joe as he discusses why he started publishing, how he collaborates and the challenges of small publishing in a world of multinational publishers and discount sellers. After losing stock in a warehouse fire Joe is re-launching with a clutch of new books - from Emma Lewis, Alice Pattullo, Clive Hicks-Jenkins and Alex Barrow - and is more determined than ever to carry on. 14.15 - 15.15 AJ DUNGO: SEQUENTIAL SELF HELP AND SURFING Hear illustrator and author AJ Dungo discuss his beautiful new graphic novel, In Waves, which deals with love, loss, and the solace of surfing. Take a peek into the process of how the book came together, the role of comics in escapism, and about all of the relationships that paved the way for his first collaboration with Nobrow. ELCAF AWARDs CEREMONY Sunday, 18.00 MAIN HALL ELCAF will be announcing the winners of our awards for exhibitors. The ELCAF Award, sponsored by WeTransfer, gives an artist £3,500 to transform their idea into a printed publication. The ELCAF Audience Award winner gets a £200 gift card by Cass Arts and an opportunity to exhibit at their exhibition space in Islington. Check the daily line-up on the board next to the DJ Booth. 15.30 - 16.30 MELEK ZERTAL: COMICS/IDENTITY How can comics fill the gap between contemporary art and popular culture? How can it be something both futile and committed? A link between a home country and a foster one? Join illustrator Melek Zertal as she talks about her work and considers these questions, as well as pondering why she keeps drawing sad lesbian love stories. 16.45 - 17.45 JON MCNAUGHT Our ELCAF 2019 artist-in-residence Jon McNaught will talk about the process of creating his latest comic book Kingdom, which explores the landscapes of a caravan site on the British coast, and the beauty and boredom of childhood holidays. Talking through the creative process, from initial ideas and research to final artwork, Jon will also explain printmaking, poetry, and his use of comics to explore distant memories and the passing of time. WORKSHOPS TENT 12.15 - 13.45 IT’S ABOUT with TRICICLO EDITORA Join Lisbon based children’s micro-publisher Triciclo Editora in this lighthearted and fun interpretation game. Use postcards, tickets, photographs and other images as a starting point to illustrate and bring the game to life. 14.00 - 15.30 PRINTED PENNANTS with AKVILE MAGICDUST Illustrator and ELCAF 2018 Award winner Akvile Magicdust invites you into the secret world of flags. Create colourful banners (pennants) of textiles using linocut techniques. Using a bit of designing, sewing and printing, voilà! - you’ll have your own personal banner to take home with you! Suitable for ages 10+ 15.45 - 17.15 PLANET PLASTICINE with BROLLY LOLLY Join our pals at Brolly Lolly to create a colourful world full of plasticine figures and props. Come up with a story, create a cast of characters and creatures, and then bring it all to life in a stop- motion animated video. You’ll need a mobile phone, the Stop Motion Studio app (download this for free before the workshop via iTunes), and your imagination! 17.30 - 19.00 ART ON THE MOVE with BÁRBARA MALAGOLI AND BLACK SABA Take part in this considered comic making workshop on identity and migration with Brazilian artist Bárbara Malagoli and Black Saba Press. Highlighting how specific the mundane can be when you are far from home, develop a story based on your memories. In a world of migration and movement, consider what it means to call somewhere home, and the associations attached with it no matter how far away you go. 15.30 - 16.30MELEK ZERTAL: COMICS/IDENTITYHow can comics fill the gap between contemporary art and popular culture? How can it be something both futile and committed? A link between a home country and a foster one? Join illustrator Melek Zertal as she talks about her work and considers these questions, as well as pondering why she keeps drawing sad lesbian love stories.

16.45 - 17.45JON MCNAUGHTOur ELCAF 2019 artist-in-residence Jon McNaught will talk about the process of creating his latest comic book Kingdom, which explores the landscapes of a caravan site on the British coast, and the beauty and boredom of childhood holidays. Talking through the creative process, from initial ideas and research to final artwork, Jon will also explain printmaking, poetry, and his use of comics to explore distant memories and the passing of time.

14.00 - 15.30PRINTED PENNANTS with AKVILE MAGICDUSTIllustrator and ELCAF 2018 Award winner Akvile Magicdust invites you into the secret world of flags. Create colourful banners (pennants) of textiles using linocut techniques. Using a bit of designing, sewing and printing, voilà! - you’ll have your own personal banner to take home with you! Suitable for ages 10+

15.45 - 17.15PLANET PLASTICINE with BROLLY LOLLYJoin our pals at Brolly Lolly to create a colourful world full of plasticine figures and props. Come up with a story, create a cast of characters and creatures, and then bring it all to life in a stop-motion animated video. You’ll need a mobile phone, the Stop Motion Studio app (download this for free before the workshop via iTunes), and your imagination!

17.30 - 19.00ART ON THE MOVE with BÁRBARA MALAGOLI AND BLACK SABATake part in this considered comic making workshop on identity and migration with Brazilian artist Bárbara Malagoli and Black Saba Press. Highlighting how specific the mundane can be when you are far from home, develop a story based on your memories. In a world of migration and movement, consider what it means to call somewhere home, and the associations attached with it no matter how far away you go. Suitable for ages 10+
