Las actividades del Mes de la Patria han sido coordinadas por el Consulado General de la República Dominicana, y junto a este en esta ciudad han participado Efemérides Patrias del Valle del Merrimack, Casa Dominicana y Desfile Dominicano. En otras ciudades como Boston, Lynn, Salem, y Providence se llevaron a cabo actos similares, con la finalidad de honrar la patria dominicana, en cada una de ellas entidades comunitarias se han integrado a su organización. Una de esas actividades se realizó a principios del mes de febrero en Boston, con una Mesa Redonda donde tomaron parte líderes comunitarios, representantes de los diferentes partidos políticos dominicanos y personalidades dominicanas. El tema central de la Mesa Redonda, desarrollado por Jorge Tapia, se titulaba “Aspectos Humanos del proceso de Independencia de la República Dominicana y/o participación de los Negros y Mulatos en la Jorge Tapia, quien ha estado ofreciendo una serie de charlas en varias ciudades con motivo del Mes de la Patria. Con varios eventos que incluyeron charlas,conferencias, reconocimientos, unademostración del Carnaval Dominicano y hastacon cierta controversia la comunidaddominicana cierra con broche de oro el Mes dela Patria, el cual se inició el pasado 26 de enero,fecha en que se conmemora el natalicio delpatricio Juan Pablo Duarte y concluye estepróximo lunes, 27 de febrero con el izamientode la bandera dominicana, no solo en estaciudad, sino en otras comunidades donde hayuna significativa presencia de dominicanos.

La carta que mostramos en la página 11 fueenviada al Alcalde de Lawrence como resultado deuna reunión sostenida por los miembros delMerrimack Valley Workforce Investment Board. Ellosinsisten que dicha reunión fue ilegal porque no fueanunciada debidamente como todas las reunionespúblicas deben ser y su frustración dio pie a estefinal.
Herlihy, Koch y Quimby piensan que “la MVWIBes ahora como un carapacho sin dientes. Una JuntaRegional que es un cuño de aprobación para el alcaldede la ciudad que es la entidad al cargo de gastar eldinero de la Junta (ahora el dinero de la Ciudad deLawrence)” como resultado de un cambio queaprobaron en esa reunión. El Alcalde Sullivanpropuso un acuerdo y nuevas reglas dándole elcontrol absoluto de los fondos.
Como parte de la demanda de la semana pasadacontra la Ciudad de Lawrence y el Alcalde Michael J.Sullivan por la Directora Ejecutiva del MerrimackValley Workforce Investment Board, Shaw Rosen, estátratando de salvar su reputación y dignidad bajo la
protección de una ley federal que protege a laspersonas que se han estado quejando de accionesinapropiadas.
De las muchas acusaciones descritas en la cartade su abogado, una de ellas fue que “el empleo dela Sra. Rosen había sido ofrecido como sobornopara obtener apoyo en las elecciones pasadas.” Elnombre más comúnmente mencionado era el delConcejal Patrick Blanchette. Rumbo le preguntó yél lo negó diciendo que no tenía ningúnconocimiento de tal oferta.
Ahora le han pedido al Inspector General queinvestigue la posibilidad de que hayan violado lasLeyes de Reuniones Abiertas al público con lasostenida el 17 de febrero.
Esta información está basada exclusivamenteen conversaciones con los miembros del personaldel WIB y la carta enviada por el abogado de ShawRosen. Varias llamadas al Alcalde Michael J.Sullivan y a su Jefe de Despacho Myles Burkefueron ignoradas.

Aunque en los festivales de verano como sonSemana Hispana y Desfile Dominicano hemosdisfrutado del colorido de la comparsa Mirabal, desus disfraces y de la historia que encierra este evento,por primera vez pudimos ver de cerca una muestra deese carnaval dominicano que se festeja durante todoel mes de febrero y en cada rincón del país, en elprimer Carnaval Dominicano de Massachusetts.
La actividad fue realizada en el auditorio de laescuela Saint Mary la tarde del pasado domingo, conrepresentaciones de los diablos cojuelos de Santiago,Bonao, La Vega y Santo Domingo.
Estelvyn Mirabal quien es el director de laComparsa de la Familia Mirabal, fue el coordinador dela actividad. Esta comparsa cuenta con cerca de 70miembros y desde hace unos años han estadopresentes en varios eventos realizados en esta ciudady en otras comunidades.
Este año tienen invitaciones para actividades enNueva York, Boston y Lynn entre otras ciudades.
En República Dominicana el cierre del carnavales el 27 de febrero, día de la Independencia Nacional,donde comparsas, diablos cojuelos o los lechones ylos personajes propios de esta celebración van por
las calles alegrando a aquellos que esperan conansias cada domingo para entregarse al carnaval.
De igual modo para la fecha de la RestauraciónDominicana, el 16 de agosto tiene lugar otrocarnaval, el que se realiza con la finalidad deconmemorar esta importante fecha histórica.

WIB: Otravergüenza para
LawrenceTiene que haber una mejor manera para que Lawrence pueda
resolver sus problemas además de escándalos, mala publicidad ydemandas ante los tribunales. La novela con el WIB se estáconvirtiendo en otro bochorno para la ciudad y a este paso se va aponer peor.
Cuando el Alcalde Michael J. Sullivan disolvió la Junta anterior,quienes lo apoyan pensaron que esto iba a mejorar las relacionesentre esa organización, el Ayuntamiento y ValleyWorks. Por elcontrario, las acusaciones lo han elevado a un nivel que ha causadouna investigación por el Inspector General, una demanda de $2millones contra la ciudad y abundante material para ser cubierto porla prensa.
Como si eso no fuese suficiente, en una movida poco inteligente,ellos eligieron a Pedro Arce como presidente de la Junta. El Sr. Arceha sido una ficha más en ese organismo por largo tiempo, nuncahabiendo tenido una función significativa porque rara vez asiste alas reuniones. Además, él tiene el historial de haber servido en elComité Escolar de Lawrence como el cuño de aprobación delSuperintendente Wilfredo T. Laboy. El hizo un trabajo tan pésimodurante ese tiempo que no pudo ni tan siquiera recoger las pocasfirmas requeridas para poder tener su nombre en la boleta electoralhace dos años, forzándolo por tanto a salirse del Comité Escolar.
El Alcalde Sullivan debe aliarse con personas de calidad, nosolamente con gente que diga que “sí”. El necesita personaspensantes que lo ayuden a guiar la ciudad y cada vez que da unpaso hacia atrás como ahora, atrasa también el progreso de la ciudad.

besides scandals, bad press and lawsuits. The WIB novella is turninginto another embarrassment for the city and it’s only going to getworse at that pace.
When Mayor Michael J. Sullivan disbanded the previous Board,his supporters hoped that it was to improve the relations betweenthat organization, City Hall and ValleyWorks. Instead, theaccusations have risen to a higher level causing an investigation bythe Inspector General, a $2 million lawsuit against the city and awealth of material to be covered by the press.
If that was not all, in a less than intelligent move, they electedPedro Arce President of the Board. Mr. Arce has been a token onthat board for a long time, never having any meaningful duty becausehe hardly ever shows up for meetings. Besides, he has the historicalbackground of having served on the Lawrence School Committee asSuperintendent Wilfredo T. Laboy’s rubber stamp. He did such apoor job during his tenure there that he could not even get thelimited number of signatures required to get his name on the ballottwo years ago, forcing him out of the School Committee.
Mayor Sullivan must align himself with quality people, not just“yes” people. He needs thinkers who will help him guide this cityand every time he takes a step backwards like this, he sets progressback.

La posición de Director deDerechos Humanos en Lawrencefue publicada hace varias semanasy mientras que los rumores abundan,la realidad es que estenombramiento ha estado paralizado.
Según Frank Bonet, director depersonal de la Ciudad de Lawrence,“no hemos podido comenzar laselección de los candidatos paraesta posición y llevarlo ante elconcilio de la ciudad para seraprobado porque los miembros dela Comisión de Derechos Humanosson los que tienen que hacer laselección entre los solicitantes y nohan tenido el quórum necesario,”explicó.
El no tener a los miembrosrequeridos en la Comisión deDerechos Humanos ha sido la razónpara la demora pero, el martes, 21de febrero, el Concilio de la Ciudadde Lawrence discutirá elnombramiento de dos personas paraservir en la Comisión de DerechosHumanos. Janice Vargas y SandyGuerrier han sido recomendadas porel Alcalde Michael J. Sullivan paraun término de tres años.
Tan pronto como la Comisiónse reúna, ellos revisarán las planillasy seleccionarán al mejor candidatopara la posición y entonces seráenviada al Concilio.
“Contrario a todo lo que oiga,”me dijo el Sr. Bonet, “nadie ha sidodesalentado de solicitar la plaza oha sido rechazado porque laComisión no ha revisado las planillashasta ahora,” confirmó.

Anticipándose al Día de San Valentín, durante los días 12, 13 y 14 del corriente mes, laconocida empresaria Zoa Méndez, como en años anteriores, trasladó su negocio de floresestablecido en el 152 de Broadway para el Centro de Naturalización, localizado en el 120 dela misma avenida.
Las intenciones de Zoa eran ofrecer más espacio, más estacionamiento gratis y másopciones para sus clientes, además de más horas para hacer sus compras. La semana pasada reportamos sobre laidea de la Concejala Marie Gosselin paraexpandir el estacionamiento para la nuevaescuela secundaria y el estadio. El lotevacío entre la escuela y la piscina estatal eslo suficientemente amplio para acomodar acientos de autos si la ciudad logra construirun garaje. El primer paso es hacer que elestado se lo ceda a la ciudad.
Como la Concejala Gosselin no es delas que desperdicia el tiempo, hizo su tareaponiéndose en contacto con el Director delDepartamento de Planeamiento de la ciudad,Michael Sweeney, para averiguar si su ideatiene alguna posibilidad.
“El Alcalde Sullivan me ha pedido queindague sobre los detalles y me ponga encontacto con el estado. Pienso hacerloesta semana para hablar sobre la posibilidadde hacer la transferencia del terreno a laciudad. Si recibo una reacción positiva delestado, empezaremos a crear unpresupuesto, un estimado del costo y medirel tiempo que tomará este proyecto”, dijo elSr. Sweeney.

The Merrimack Valley YMCA heldanother recognition program for some localstudents involved in volunteer activities.The Prudential Spirit of Community Awardswere created in 1995 to recognize studentsin middle and high school grades who havedemonstrated exemplary communityservice. These prestigious awards,sponsored by Prudential Financial inpartnership with the National Associationof Secondary School Principals arepresented annually on the local, state andnational level.
The honorees received plaques fromthe YMCA and the three winnersrepresenting each branch of the YMCA alsoreceived a $100 US Savings Bonddonated by Unified Federal CreditUnion at Lawrence General Hospitalfor the third consecutive year.

En estos tiempos en que tanto se hahablado de la revitalización de la Ciudad deLawrence por medio de medidas quefortalezcan la economía y generen fuentesde trabajo, es sumamente positivo queentidades que se dedican al desarrollo delas artes pongan su atención en estacomunidad, con el fin de ayudarla en su metahacia la revitalización.
Una de esas entidades es elMassachusetts Cultural Council (MCC),quien a través de su directora ejecutiva MaryKeller hizo pública la designación de $29mil dólares destinados a poner en marchaun programa denominado Viva! Lawrence.
La asignación del dinero es parte deuna propuesta hecha por el gobernador MittRomney, en el presupuesto del año fiscaldonde se estableció más de un millón dedólares ($1.35 millones) para el programaJohn & Abigail Adams Arts Program, el cualse dedica a trabajar por el fortalecimientode las artes y la cultura.
Aparte de Lawrence variascomunidades alrededor de Massachusettsse van a beneficiar de esta partida de dinero.Se estima que en dichas comunidades sepreparan para desarrollar 34 proyectosrelacionados con el arte.
Un panel hizo una revisión,recomendando financiar los mismos de untotal de 48 que se presentaron comopropuestas.
Esos planes incluyen incrementar ladramatización de escenas en el teatro ymanifestaciones de artes en Boston;expandir el turismo cultural en el NorthShore, South Shore, Cape Cod y en PioneerValley.
Asimismo, ciudades como Lynn,Worcester, Fall River y Pittsfield podrángracias a la subvención recibida emplearartistas para ayudar a revitalizar sus centrosurbanos.
El proyecto de Lawrence, Viva!Lawrence estará dirigido por el Essex ArtCenter, Lawrence Cultural Alliance,Lawrence Heritage State Park y NorthernEssex Community College.

Al hacer uso de la palabra cada uno deellos se refirió a la importancia que tiene elarte y la cultura para el desarrollo de lospueblos y cómo contribuyen al desarrolloeconómico de los mismos.
Durante la actividad se hizo lapresentación de un cheque por la suma de$65 mil dólares para Cultural Organizationof Lowell (COOL), la que mensualmentedesarrolla una serie cultural mundialconocida como Destination World. Estaserie se basa en los orígenes de los paísesque enriquecen la diversidad étnica de lapoblación de Lowell.
Destination World ha estadodesarrollándose desde el pasado año pormedio del apoyo de MCC.

¡Hola Amigos Lectores! Todo estaen marcha y nos encontramos casi listospara la “gran reapertura” la cual se llevaráa cabo en abril. Louise Sandberg, nuestrabibliotecaria de Colecciones Especiales,está mudándose gradualmente a su nuevoespacio. La nueva máquina para leer lasmicro-filminas está conectada ytrabajando, al igual que las computadorasy los teléfonos y el área donde va elescritorio de Louise. Ella ya ha estadobrindando ayuda al público a pesar deque esta área no se encuentra abierta.
Como un toque extra, tendremos unmural en una de las paredes de esta áreael cual celebrará la historia del arte y lacultura de nuestra ciudad. Le estamosprofundamente agradecidos a Guy (Terry)Kelley del Merrimack Valley CommunityService Corps por este mural. Este fue elproyecto del Sr. Kelley: él animó a losjóvenes a pintar el mural y él tambiénbuscó los fondos para lograr esta obrade arte. Los fondos para este muralfueron provistos por el White FundTrustees quienes han sido muygenerosos tanto con la biblioteca, comocon un sin número de grupos culturalesde Lawrence por muchos años.
Estoy particularmente contenta depoder tener a la disposición del públicoun archivo histórico de nuestra ciudad.La biblioteca tiene muchas fotografías,reimpresiones y primeras ediciones delibros sobre la historia local, al igual queartefactos conmemorativos del pasado deLawrence, entre otros. Anteriormente, noteníamos un lugar donde exhibir estostesoros, excepto en lugares que no eranaccesibles al público.
Tampoco podríamos pedir a unamejor conservadora que a la Sra.Sandberg, la cual coleccionó, preservó, ycatalogó estos materiales sin tener lugardonde mostrarlos. Ahora el público tendráacceso a estos en un área modificadaespecialmente para este fin. Estamos
ansiosos por que los materiales seanutilizados por personas de todas lasedades - ancianos quienes todavíarecuerdan los días de las fábricas y losniños que aprenderán por primera vezsobre su ciudad y el patrimonio de ésta.
Ya estamos casi en el mes de marzo,el mes donde la ciudad celebra el mes dela Herencia Irlandesa. El Sr. David Burke,uno de los miembros del Consejo deAdministración de la biblioteca ha sido,una vez más, la fuerza detrás de lasorganización de un mes lleno de eventosculturales y educacionales, los cuales sellevarán a cabo por toda la ciudad. Labiblioteca, con mucho orgullo, será laanfitriona de un concierto de músicaIrlandesa por George y Terri Kelley. Estapresentación se llevará acabo el día 19 demarzo a las 2:00p.m. en el SargentAuditorium. No se pierda la oportunidadde escuchar a estos dos grandes artistas.El Sr. Kelley tocará el piano Steinway, elcual ha sido restaurado a su granmagnificencia. Este concierto es gratispara el público.

La subasta de arte que el Club deRotarios celebró en beneficio demayormente estudiantes de Lawrence HighSchool y Central Catholic High School fuetremendo éxito con casi 100 amantes del arteen asistencia.
El Club de Rotarios de Lawrence,fundado en 1920, consiste de más de 80hombres y mujeres representando lacomunidad empresarial. Durante losúltimos 12 meses, los Rotarios de Lawrencehan donado $54,000 en becas, dádivas,recaudaciones de fondos y premios a laspersonas de Lawrence y las organizacionesno lucrativas que los sirve. On Sunday, February 12, Lawrence PopWarner Football & Cheer Inc. held its 2006awards banquet at Knights of Columbus,located a 1 Market Street, in Lawrence, andmore than 250 children, players andcheerleaders, plus their parents filled thehall.
Lawrence Pop Warner originated in thecity in 1964. Typically, by the end of May,three months before the season even opens,many teams are already full and a waitinglist is in place. “I have been getting phonecalls all winter with parents inquiring aboutregistration for their children,” says L.P.W.Treasurer Karen Elwell. “We are fortunateto have dedicated volunteers within ourprogram who are there only for the kids,people sense that and want to be part ofwhat we do, and we are truly blessed bythem all.”

The Grand Opening Celebration was heldon Wednesday, February 15 at 4:00 p.m.The event began with tours of the newFamily Aquatic Center and renovatedprogram spaces in the lower level of theYMCA. On hand were 150 members of thecommunity and 150 children enrolled inthe YMCA’s child care programs.
Guests received “I made a splash -Lawrence YMCA Family Aquatic CenterGrand Opening” t-shirts, and all of thechildren who were on hand for the partywore them. Students of the Greater LawrenceTechnical School catered the event.
After 16 months of construction, theLawrence Branch of the Merrimack ValleyYMCA completed the largest constructionproject that branch has seen since it waserected in 1880. The new $2.7 million FamilyAquatic Center consists of a new six-lane,25-yard indoor heated swimming pool, andhas added more family changing rooms, anda new women’s locker room. This newswimming pool is nearly two and a half timeslarger than the 90-year-old pool it replacedthat faithfully served the YMCA for decades.
The new pool will give the LawrenceYMCA Branch the ability to run more childand adult swimming and aquatic safetyclasses, more lifeguard training courses, andwill allow the Y to plan more family fun swimtime at the YMCA, bringing families togetherfor quality time. The Merrimack ValleyYMCA’s award winning competitive swimteams - the ANA Hurricanes and SynchersSynchronized Swim team - will be able toexpand their workout and practice time inthe new pool. Additionally, the YMCA willbe able to offer aquatics programming tomembers of the new Methuen BranchYMCA.
Following the extensive buildingrenovations to the lower level of the branchwhere the old swimming pool was located,the construction project included theaddition of more program space including alarge multi-purpose room and large after-school classrooms.

As professional staff to a public board, we are knowledgeable about therequirements of the Open Meeting Law. It is arequirement of the law that upcoming meetings be publicly posted in allcommunities of the Board’s region. This meeting was not.
Yet again the Mayor’s lawyers, advisors and administration officials havehastily attempted to arrange a WIB meeting at the last possible minute withthe utmost secrecy. Why? The devil is in the details of the materials beingpresented for Board votes today, some of which are in possible violation offederal law under the Workforce Investment Act. Scenarios such as this areexactly the reason the Open Meeting Law was enacted in Massachusetts.
Throughout the years, we have watched your Executive Director, ShawRosen, conduct herself with the utmost integrity as a public servant. As a staffloyal to her, we strive to match the ethics she displays. We have worked toohard and progressed too far to silently witness as Board oversight and authorityfor improvement of workforce development efforts are eviscerated at an illegalmeeting.
Our recommendation is clear: this meeting should not be conducted, dueto the breach of the Open Meeting Law. Mr. Chairman, don’t hold thismeeting.

Last week we reported on CouncilorMarie Gosselin’s idea to expand the parkingfacilities in the area of the new high schooland the stadium. The empty lot betweenthe new school and the state-run swimmingpool is big enough to accommodatehundreds of cars if the city can build aparking garage. The first step is to get theState to turn it over to the city.
Since Councilor Gosselin is not one towaste time, she did her homeworkcontacting the Director of the PlanningDepartment, Michael Sweeney, to find outif her idea had any possibilities.
“Mayor Sullivan has asked me to lookinto the details and to contact the state. Iwill be contacting the state this week to talkabout the possibility of transferring the landto the city. If I get a positive reaction fromthe state, we will begin to create a budget,cost estimate and timeline for the project,”said Mr. Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney agrees that there is a needfor increased parking in the area and he saysthat “it benefits the city when you havegood ideas coming from the city councilors.”

Of the many accusations posed in herattorney’s letter, was that “Mrs. Rosen’s jobhad been offered as a bribe to obtain supportin the last election.” The name most oftenmentioned as part of that deal was that ofCouncilor Patrick Blanchette. Rumbo posed
the question to Mr. Blanchette and he deniedhaving any knowledge of such offer.
The Inspector General has now beenasked to look into the possibility of havingbroken the Open Meeting Laws with thatmeeting of February 17.
This information is based exclusivelyon conversations with the WIB staffmembers and the letter sent by ShawRosen’s attorney. Several telephone callsplaced to Mayor Michael J. Sullivan andhis Chief of Staff Myles Burke were ignored.

Hello Rumbo readers. Things aremoving along here as we get ready forour “Grand Re-Opening” in April. LouiseSandberg, our special collectionslibrarian, is gradually moving into the newpublic archive area. We have themicrofilm reader set up already and weare getting her desk area functional. Thecomputer and phone lines have beenhooked up so we will be ready to go verysoon.
Louise is already having customerseven though the room is not officiallyopen yet. As an extra aesthetic touch, wewill have one of the walls in this areacovered by a mural celebrating the artsand cultural side of our city’s history. Weare very grateful to Guy (Terry) Kelleyfrom the Merrimack Valley CommunityService Corps for this mural. It was hisproject: he got the young people engagedto do the art work and he also securedfunding for the project. Funding wasprovided by the White Fund Trusteeswho have been so generous to both thelibrary and countless other culturalgroups in Lawrence over many, manyyears.
I am particularly thrilled about havingan archive that is accessible, at least inpart, to the public. This library has sucha wealth of photographs, local historyreprint and first edition books, artifactsand general memorabilia from Lawrence’spast that I have always hated havingnowhere to display any of it except inareas where patrons do not have access.One could not ask for a better, moreenthusiastic “curator” for this materialthan Mrs. Sandberg, but I know it musthave been frustrating to her to be busycollecting, preserving and cataloging allthese fascinating things that hardlyanyone would see. Now we can haveregular public access to our material in abright pleasant area of the building. Welook forward to the resources being usedby people of all ages—from our seniors
who still remember the mill days to classvisits from school children getting theirfirst taste of their, and their city’s, heritage.
It is almost March and Lawrence willbe celebrating Irish Heritage Month. Mr.David Burke, one of the library trusteeshas, as usual, been a driving force behindorganizing a full month of cultural andeducational events in venues all over thecity. The library is proud to host a concertand sing-along of Irish favoritesperformed by George and Terri Kelley.The performance will take place on March19th at 2:00 in the Sargent Auditorium.Don’t miss the opportunity to hear thesetwo talented artists perform. An extra treatis that Ms. Kelley will accompany thesinging on the White Fund’s beautifullyrestored Steinway piano. We are veryproud to house this magnificentinstrument here and want to welcome youall to join us to enjoy what will surely bea top-notch performance. The concert isfree and open to all.
Well, I am off to the Essex Art Centerto celebrate another cultural triumph forour city. The Gateway ReviviendoInitiative, with the support of theLawrence Cultural Alliance, has receiveda prestigious Abigail Adams Grant fromthe Massachusetts Cultural Council. Thegrant will fund their Viva Lawrence!project. This certainly is an exciting timeto be part of the cultural community ofthis city. See you at the library.

The art auction held by the Rotary Clubof Lawrence to benefit mostly LawrenceHigh School and Central Catholic HighSchool was a huge success with almost 100art lovers in attendance.
The Rotary Club of Lawrence, foundedin 1920, consists of over 80 men and womenrepresenting the business community. Overthe past 12 months, the Lawrence Rotaryhas donated $54,000 in scholarships, grants,fund-raising and awards to the people ofLawrence and the non-profit organizationswho serve them. Over the past 10 years,they have raised over $350,000 for ourcommunity and its service organizations.
“Thanks to the many people whoattended this event, we made $2,500 forscholarships,” said John Felci, president-elect of the Lawrence Rotary Club.
Every Spring a committee made up by
members of the Rotary Club offerscholarships to Lawrence high schoolstudents to further their education or tomiddle school students who wish to attendprivate schools like Presentation of Maryor Central Catholic.
Rotary represents a cross-section ofthe community’s business and professionalmen and women. The world’s Rotary clubsmeet weekly and are nonpolitical,nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races,and creeds.

The Merrimack Valley YMCA’s “ReachOut For Youth” volunteer committee hasbeen busy planning the 2006 campaign. Thecommittee held a kick-off breakfast today atthe Methuen YMCA, hosting volunteersand community leaders.
Katie Sanchez, a fifth grade student atthe Lawrence Family Development CharterSchool, opened the event by singing “WhatI’ve Been Looking For.” She wasaccompanied by Amy Baione, the YMCA’sMusic Clubhouse Director, on keyboard.Miss Sanchez has been an active participantat the YMCA’s Music Clubhouse since itopened its doors one year ago. “Katie isone of our greatest ambassadors. She hasrecruited dozens of friends and studentssince she joined,” Ms. Baione said.
The goal for the YMCA’s 2006campaign is $366,000. Last year, the “ReachOut for Youth” campaign raised more than$250,000 through individual giving andspecial events to provide financialassistance to nearly 2,000 children andfamilies in need. These annual fund dollarsprovide financial assistance to needy anddeserving children and families residing inthe Greater Lawrence community toparticipate in YMCA programs. The goal ofthe “Reach Out For Youth” program is toassure that no one is turned away from theYMCA for inability to pay.

The position for a Human RightsDirector in Lawrence was advertised afew weeks ago and while rumorsabound, the fact is that thisappointment has been at a stand still.
According to Frank Bonet,Personnel Director for the City ofLawrence, “we have not been able tobegin the selection of candidates forthis position and bring it before the CityCouncil for their approval because themembers of the Human RightsCommission are the ones doing theselection among the applicantsand they don’t have a quorum,” heexplained.
Not having sufficient members onthe Human Rights Commission hasbeen the culprit for the delay but, onTuesday, February 21, the LawrenceCity Council will be discussing theappointment of two individuals to serveon the Human Rights Commission.Janice Vargas and Sandy Guerrier arebeing recommended by Mayor MichaelJ. Sullivan for a three-year term.
As soon as the Commission meets,they will be going through theapplications and select the bestcandidate for the position and then itwill be sent before the City Council.
“Contrary to anything you hear,”said Mr. Bonet, “no one has beendiscouraged from applying or turneddown because the Commission has notreviewed the applicants,” he stated. down because the Commission has notreviewed the applicants,” he stated.
