Super Storm Sandy oo Seattle ku Fiicnaan Laheyd?

Sida Hurricane Katrina lagu arkay baabuurta biyuhu ka galaan engine-ka tuuris ayey ku dambeeyaan oo iyaga oo dhan baa kharribma. Tirada baabuurta khar-ribantay waxa ay shaqo la’aan ku keeneen darawallo sidooda oo kale u fara badan oo la hubo in maalmo soo socda guri joog ahaan doonaan ama meelo kale u shaqo doonan doonaan.Waxan jeclaan lahaa in dabeyshan ku habsan laheyd

Yellow Cap Seattle maxaa yeelay waxa uu kambanigaasi maskaxda iyo jilbaha tiray Soomaali fara badan oo la’aantiis horurmar dhaqaale gaari lahaa, caafi maad hagaagsanna heli lahaa. Fadhiga faraha badan jilbaha oo kaliya ma dhibaateeyo, balse waxa uu dhibaa-teeyaa dhabarka oo isku noqda, sokor iyo dhiig kar ka dhasha dhaqdhaqaaq la’aanta. Waxa sidoo kale darawalladu wada xafi daan dham-maan waddooyinka magaalada oo isla markaa-na si aada maskaxda uga shaqeysiiyaan iyagoo ku dadaalaya iney addreska si dhaqsi ah ku gaaraan. Taasi waxa ay maskaxda ku keentaa iney shidaal badan cunto sida timaha oo dhaqsi u haada iyo indha oo arragooda soo yaraada.

Waxad u maleyseysaa in darwarlnimadu tahay dabin Soomaali ku wada dhacday oo weliba intii ay iska waanin lahaayeen oo midba midka kale ku sii ri-dayo. Dabeecadaha Soomaalida ayey noqotay iney is lug jiidaaan oo xittaa haddii qofku hur ku jiro uu jecel yahay in lala huro. Runta waxa ay da’ yarta ku

guubaaineysaa iney tacliinta ka war doonaan. Had-dii waqti dheer aadan awoodin inaad waxbarasho sii waddo, waxa hubanti ah inaad heleyso waxbarasho waqti gaaban oo weliba lagaa bixinayo sida fars-amooyinka cunto karinta, rooti dubista, alxanka, beero beerista guryaha iyo jidadka, caafi maadka, makaanik iyo faryaamo iwm. Maxaa kugu wareerinaya inaad maskaxdaada quruxda badan ku baabi’iso address xafi did oo haddii aad magaalada ka guurto meel kale aadan la aadi karin? Caqliga laguu sheegayo macnihiisu waxa uu yahay inaad xisaabtanto. Haddii aad 10 sano taxi ama taraag waddo waxba kuuma kordhin, haddiise 10 sano aad shaqo kale iyo waxbarasho isku waddo wax tar wayn ayaad usoo hoysay naftaada iyo qoyskaaga iyo weliba waddankaaga. Haddaba adiga kala dooro anaad sanuud ururiso ama aad xar xaraf ku darto adigoo berri ka maalin aad dad kale wax sii bari karto. Caqliga fayow waxa uu dooranayaa inuu mustaqbal ka fakaro, midka gaabanna maanta oo kaliya ayuun buu arki karaa. Keebey Soomaalidu leedahay?

Tim Burgess Begins Campaign for Mayor of Seattle (Seattle, Washington) Tim Burgess offi cially began his campaign Tuesday November 27 to become Seattle’s next Mayor when he fi led disclosure reports with the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission. “I’m running for Mayor because we urgently need a leader who can bring people together to get things done.” Burgess said. Now in his second term on the Seattle City Council, Burgess has a unique breadth of experienceas a former journalist, poverty relief worker, police offi cer and small business owner. The fi ling of the campaign compliance reports made Burgess’ entry into the race offi cial after months of rumors and specula-tion. The campaign also launched its website at www.BurgessForMayor.com.“All across Seattle, people have said they want bolder thinking, more inclusive and moreeffective leadership from City Hall to bring people together and get things done,” Burgess said. “With focused and clear leadership, we can accomplish great things for the people of Seattle.“Seattle is an amazingly wonderful city and we can be very proud of our accomplishments. Ourfuture can be even brighter if we work together to build an economy of the future, with more family wage jobs, with equity and justice for all, environmental health and sustainability, high quality early childhood ser-vices, and excellence in our public schools.“Throughout my life, I have witnessed what can be ac-complished when people have the courageand conviction to join together and champion what they believe in. I saw this 40 years ago as a young journalist when police offi cers stood up and said “no more” to the entrenched corruption that gripped City

Hall. I saw it in 2008 when people responded to my plan to open a residential care and treatment facility for prostituted children with contributions of hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is the kind ofleadership I will provide as Mayor for all the people of Seattle.”Burgess has spent considerable time in recent years as a champion of education reform and earlychildhood interventions.Burgess said his campaign will focus on protecting and caring for the city’s most vulnerablepeople; building trust and respect between the people and police offi cers and shifting policing strategies to focus more on preventing crime, not just responding to it; building effective transportation systems, fi x-ing what we have, fi nishing what we’ve started and creating true regional partnerships for better, quicker and environmentally smart mobility; and dramatically improving early childhood interventions and public schools.

Burgess was born and raised in Seattle, attended Ste-vens Elementary, Lincoln High School, andthe University of Washington. He and his wife, Joleen, live in the Queen Anne neighborhood where they raised three daughters—all graduates of Seattle Public Schools.Burgess was fi rst elected to the City Council in 2007, defeating an incumbent with 63% of thevote, and was re-elected in 2011 with 83%. In both of his Council campaigns, Burgess received the high-est rating of OUTSTANDING from the nonpartisan Municipal League of King County. In his 2011 race, he won endorsement from most of the city’s labor and Democratic organizations.Prior to joining the City Council, Burgess served on the city’s Ethics and Elections Commissionfor 12 years, fi ve years as its chairperson. On the Coun-cil, Burgess has chaired the Public Safety and Educa-tion Committee and the Government Performance and Finance Committee.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) First Lady Michelle Obama invited 12 young people to the White House, where they were presented with the 2012 National Arts and Humani-ties Youth Program Award awards on behalf of the after-school and out-of-school time programs that changed their lives. Chosen from a pool of more than 350 nominations and 50 finalists, the 12 community-based programs were recipients of the 2012 National Arts and Humani-ties Youth Program Award, the highest honor awarded to such programs. The awardees were recognized by Mrs. Obama for using engagement in the arts and the humanities to increase academic achievement, graduation rates, and college enroll-ment, as well as improve literacy andlanguage abilities, communication and performance skills, and cultural awareness.First awarded in 1998, the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, is the signature program of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), and is presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). In addition to the recognition at the White House, each of the 12 community-based programs will receive $10,000 and a year of communications and capacity-building support from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Louis Vuitton is the corporate sponsor of the 2012 award program, and Fox Audience Strategy is the national media partner. The 12 students receiving awards from Mrs. Obama today represent a wide range of arts and humanities programs, including programs that engage students in African culture and history through drumming, dancing and storytelling (Africa Culture Connection), focus on bilingual creative expression and theatrical performance (GALA Hispanic Theatre); and provide free, intensive training in media arts and journalism to teens in underserved communities (Youth Radio). As documented in a report issued in 2011 by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humani-ties, research shows that low-income youth engaged in arts programs are more likely to stay in school, get higher grades, graduate high school, and enroll in college. The report also noted that the benefits of involvement in the arts increase over time for low-income students, and that they are more likely than their peers to attend and do well in college, obtain employment with a future, volunteer in their commu-nities and participate in the political process by voting. The award ceremony was punctuated by a rousing performance from one of this year’s winners, the Mariachi Master Apprentice Program, which brings together award-winning mariachi music masters with middle and high school students in

Los Angeles for intensive instruction and performance, preserving the genre of mariachi and its important role in the Hispanic cultural experience. The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award is the nation’s highest honor for after-school arts and humanities programs. The awards recognize and support outstanding programs that lay new pathways to creativity, expression, and achievement outside of the regular school day.The 12 award winners include programs in New York, San Fernando, California, Oakland, Washington, D.C., Boston, Seattle, Providence, Rhode Island, Norfolk, Virginia, Omaha, Nebraska, Copley, Ohio and others. Some are specific to a particular ethnic group, such as all Latino or all African American, and others are truly multicul-tural with a huge mix of kids working together, like the ones in Boston, Seattle, Providence and Oakland. Also, an additional International Spotlight Award is going to a program in China’s Guizhou province where an indigenous ethnic minority group passes down their customs and heritage to their children through song.

Somali Family Night at Tukwila School District!Tukwila school district in collaboration with the Somali Community Services Coalition held an East African Parent night on Thursday November 29th at Showalter Middle School. The purpose of the event was to educate the parents how schools work in the US. It was a night filled with information that families were looking forward to hear especially newly arrived families. Parents did get an opportunity toward the end to ask questions.“Our parent nights have been going on the last few years and most of our topics were decided by our families such as: educa-tion, health/fitness, tenant rights and responsibilities and etc. We are continuing our parent nights through May, as our next one will be in January and our topic is still to be deter-

mined” said Guled Ali who is one of the school officials and who facilitated the meeting since he is the only officer in the school who speaks Somali.Ali took the opportunity to thank all the facilitators as he put it “We would like to take time to thank our families, district staff that were present, ReWA, Somali Community Services Coalition (SeaTac) and last but not least our wonderful presenters”. Tukwila Schools host large number of Somali students and have great relationship with their parents who most do not speak good English as the young students do, and for that matter they have Guled Ali on their side to bridge the gap.

The 2012 GSA's Annual Scien-tific Meeting ended last month in San Diego with a significant number of participants. The meeting which was held November 14 to 18 brought together close to 4,000 of the brightest minds in the field of aging. This meeting is the premier gathering of geron-tologists from both the United States and around the world. They have participated in over 400 scientific sessions includ-ing symposia, paper, and poster presentations.GSA’s scientific program is one

of the most respected and competitive of its kind. The theme is “Charting New Fron-tiers in Aging.” Charting implies connections — within and across disciplines, professions, individuals, cohorts, genera-tions, systems, environments, cultures and nations. By chart-ing connections, they move beyond their personal insights and investigations to achieve a deeper and more meaningful understanding of aging and its implications.See more photos about the meeting in the center pages of the paper.

Daily UpdateDaily Update

The month of October can be puzzling for folks with families learning to garden. With the weather starting to turn cold, wet and grey again, long periods of time outside seem less enticing. Visually, the vegetable garden appears to have less going on. However, October is a great time to begin composting your kitchen waste! There are many methods and devices that you can employ to compost your food waste at home. Popular methods of composting are digestion, burial or tossing your scraps in your curbside collection bin,but for the gardening family, none offers more fun and excitement than a worm bin.Unlike other food waste composting methods, worm bins allow decompo-sition to happen above ground. All the biological processes and fauna of composting can be easily observed in a worm binand the vermicompost that a worm bin produces is practically ambrosia for houseplants or seeds in need of a starting medium. One challenge many families face is ensuring that their worm bin will be able to accommodate all the food waste they generate. This is a great educational opportunity for a mini “waste audit.” Collect all organic scraps that your

family generates and separate it from the rest of the waste for one week. Place them into a few quart-sized yogurt containers with lids in the refrigerator marked with a big “X” Weigh out the collected scraps. The golden rule for worm bin processing is one pound of food waste per one square foot of container per one week. So, if your family generates 12 pounds of food waste in a week, you’ll need a bin that has a floor plan of 12 square feet. There are worm bins available on the market and plans available online. To download plans for wooden or plastic worm bins, visit the composting information section on the Seattle Tilth website at http://seattletilth.org/learn/resources-1/compost/compost. Look for the Food Waste Bin heading for Worm Bin Plans (wooden bin) or Off-The-Shelf Worm Bin Plans (Rubbermaid bins converted to a worm bin). A popular commercial worm bin, ‘The Worm Factory’, is available online at www.compostbins.com. These bins are good for indoor use but also

have a smaller footprint than ones you build and will not be able to process as many food scraps as a larger wooden worm bin. You can sometimes find ‘The Worm Factory’ available at local stores that specialize in natural gardening supplies. You can construct multiple bins to meet your needs or put some of your food scraps in your worm bin and the rest in your curbside collection bin. Both approaches are good for the environment. And of course, be on the lookout for classes and other resources about composting your food waste and ways to use the finished product on the Seattle T i l t h w e b s i t e (www.seattletilth.org)For personalizedquestions, call the Garden Hotlineat 206-633-0224.Translation services are available. Kobci aqoontaada, words of wisdom, iyo bogga su’aalaha Islaamiga ah waa bogag uu curiyey Mubarak Hadi oo ka mida dhallin-yarada maskaxda wanaagsan ee ku nool Seattle. Sawirkan cajiibka ah waxannu ka soo xadnay boggiisa facebook si aannu ula qeybsanno dadka is dhiibay ee noloshooda ka quustay iney wax bartaan. Mubarak boggagaani uu curiyey waxa ay inoo sheegayaan tilmaamo aad u

qiimo badan oo laga tusaale qaadan karo. Qofku waa innuu ku xisaabtamaa waqtiga qaaliga ah ee maalin kasta cimrigiisa ka sii go’aya. Fadlan raadso aqoon oo weliba waddanka Mareykanka qofkii jooga uu nasiib u leeyahay in lacag lagu siiyo isagoo wax baranaya. Haddii kale ood afka meelaha taag taagto maalin kasta, marna aad isku luggoyso shaqo aan waxba kaaga kordheynin, haddow ha ilmeynin oo ha is qoomameynin. Kaashka yuusan ku sirin. Xisaabtan oo isu miisan shaqada aad qabaneyso oo is weydii lacagta ka sokow maxaa aqoon ah ee kaaga kordhaya, ama haddii shaqadaasi cimrigaaga ay soo gaabineyso oo adigoon da’deeda gaarin ay tahay mid bidaar iyo cirro kugu soo kordhineysa. Haddaad talo u baahan tahay la soo xiriir Mubarak Hadi ama Runta inkastoo aaney sahlaneyn si aad ula kulanto maxaa yeelay waqtigooda qaaliga ah af-leeris kuma lumiyaan.

Waxa ugu fiican ood dadkaaga aad u qaban karto waa adigoo maskaxda wax ugu shuba, caloosha uga shuba ama wax huwiya oo qorraxda iyo dhaxanta ka difaaca. Taasi waa midda Runta u taagan tahay oo haddii ay sameysona farxadda ugu weyn ey laabta u buuxineyso. Caruurtan waa qaar ka mida kuwo lagu hayo xarun agoon oo ku taal Garoowe halkaasi oo u ku maamulo Cabdullaahi Cadde oo ah nin wax bartay oo waddamada qurbaha ka tagay. Waxa ku taageera heynta ilmaha uu waqtigiisa u huray Raja for Africa oo ah hey’ad ka dhisan Seattle.Runta markii ay ogaatay dadaalka ay wada sameynayaan labada walaal ee iska kaashaday ee kala ah Nuradin Mohamed Ali (Raja for Africa) iyo Cabdullaahi Cadde waxa ay ula muuqatay iney iyaduna dadaalka si uun uga qeyb qaadato. Waxa Ciidda Soonfur ay dirtay lacag dhar iyo kabooyin loogu iibiyo caruur 10 gaaraya oo qiyaastii nus ka ah dhammaan

caruurta xarunta lagu hayo. Midna kama naqaan caruurtaasi iyaguna sida aan hubno weligood Runta ma arkin mana maqal. Waxannu isugu nimid qowlkii Ilaahey ee lahaa “isu kaashada kheyrka iyo cabsida”.Haddii qodax la isku wada mudo, dhaawaca uun baa badanaya. Haddii ice cream lays wada siiyona jaceyl iyo walaaltimo uun baa sii kordhi. Waxa naga guubaabo ah in qof walba meeshii waxa uu tari karo uu taro. Yaan lagu mashquulin madaxweyne la yiri “waa hurdaa ama waa jiis”, maxaa yeelay wadd-anku isagu keligii ma laha oo waxa la maamula gole baarlamaan oo wixii uu ku qaldan yahay yac ka dhihi doona. Tukaanka Shiil ee ku yaal mid ka mida waddooyinka ugu caansan magaalada Seattle, waxa uu hore u qaaday tallaabo cusub oon looga baran tukaamada Soomaalida kale isagoo ku soo kordhiyey badee-cooyinkiisa khudrad kala nooc ah. Maskaxda noocaani ah waxad mood-

daa iney ku badaneyso tukaamo badan oo Mareykan ku yaal ka dib markii ay milkiilayaashu arkeen in waddada looga tagay oo dadkuna u adeeg doonayaan dukaamada kale ee waaw-eyn si ay goob kaliya uga helaan dham-maan waxa ay doonayaan. Tallaaboba tallaabo ayey keentaa. Sidaa darteedna Soomaalida waxa ay bilaabeen iney dadka Mareykanka kaga daydaan cuntooyinka caafimaadka wax u tara sida khudaarta kala duwan. Dad badan waxad mooddaa iney iska yareynayaan saxankii bariiska ay hirigta isku siin jireen iyagoo isku dayaya iney caloosha koontaroolaan isuna ekeysiiyaan dadka intiisa kale oo jirkoodu siman yahay. Taasi waxa oo kaliya oo lagu gaari karaa in la doorto cunto caafimaad leh sida mid khudaartu qeyb ka tahay. Nasiib wanaag tukaanka Shiil wuu gartay inuu dadweynaha ka iibiyo wax wax u tara si lacagta dadka uu ka qaato u ahaato mid xaq ah.

Gardening doesn’t have to stop when the temperatures drop and the sun comes out less frequently. There are many activities and plants for your garden that thrive in colder temperatures. In the vegetable garden you can sow a couple of types of plants during the late autumn to winter transition that will “over winter” or grow slowly in your garden through the chilly and wet winter. Try onions, garlic and shallots for spring or summer harvest perennial herbs for year round clip-ping, and cover crops to build your soil.• Onions, garlic and shallots can be planted October through mid-Novem-ber. Garlic bulbs can be divided and each clove planted individually while shallots and onions are planted from whole “sets” or bulbs. Each individual planting will develop into a full plant. Garlic is harvested in June or July so make sure that the space you choose to plant them will not be needed for spring planting. Shallots will be ready a little sooner than the garlic and the onions can be pulled as spring green onions or let develop through summer into larger on-ions harvested when the greens die back.• Perennial herbs like lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage and oregano are wonderful additions to the vegetable garden. They provide a year round source of fresh herbs for your meals and when fl owering attract many insects that prey on aphids and other problem garden pests. You can fi nd plants at local nurseries. • Also consider colorful winter fl owering pansies, available at nurseries and even local grocery stores which add bright spots in the garden. The fl owers are edible and can be added to green salads for a slightly spicy and colorful touch. • Cover crops can be sown from October through mid-November to pro-vide nutrients and organic matter for next year’s garden. Try a cover crop mix of annual rye, vetch and clover for the earli-est plantings or, for a later planting try fava beans or rye. In general, fall planted cover crops are either pea family plants or cereal grains like winter wheat, oats or rye. In spring when the ground is ready to work (soil not too wet) turn the cover crops into the soil and let sit for a few weeks before planting. These crops add nutrients, especially nitrogen, and organic matter to your soil and protect the soil through the winter rains.Overwintering plants have unique soil fertility needs to help them survive the cold and thrive when spring arrives. The

goal is balanced growth throughout the fall and early winter. Don’t provide too much nitrogen because it produces fast growth full of water, which makes plants more susceptible to frost damage. In the

spring, top-dress the soil around the plants with a high-nitrogen organic fertilizer or composted manure to spur faster spring growth. In an established garden, the nutrients necessary for fall plant establishment can be supplied by cover crops and compost. Cover crops can be found at local nurser-ies and through mail order companies like Territorial Seed from Oregon or Peace-ful Valley Farm Supply in California.Incorporate well-rotted compost into the entire garden bed. The comparatively warm soil temperatures of fall allow soil bacteria to mineralize the nutrients in the compost, making them available to winter vegetables. You can protect soil by using mulch. Mulches can reduce soil compaction and erosion, suppress weeds, keep the soil moist, regulate soil temperature and improve soil quality, fertility and texture. Save leaves from your garden, use your home made or store bought compost or spread straw amongst your plants for good winter protection. In your paths you can use wood chips, often available for free from local tree trimmers. This summer, Northwest Folklife partnered with Jack Straw Productions, videographer Doug Plummer, and Somali communities in King County for a special project funded by the Washington State Arts Commission. Through the Community Arts Engagement Mentorship Project (CAEMP) Northwest Folklife and partners worked with the Somali Youth & Family Club to produce two community performances of the traditional and emerging arts of Somali culture. The second showcase of this exciting new partnership was held on November 3rd at the Carco Theatre in Renton, and featured a theat-rical performance with music and dance of the Somali culture. The play which was called “Jalleecadii Muhubbada” has brought together all walks of

the Somalis who live in the State of Washington and it was such delightful for the older generation to see such a dance and music being played in their city. Hamdi Abdulle, the director of SYFC told Runta that she intends to keep the band together so they can perform throughout the State and maybe cross the border to Oregon where is becoming another hub for the Somali community. The play consisted of love and culture while the community transitioning from a nomadic life in Somalia to the more sophisticated one in the North West of the United States. It has attracted so many fans during its performance, and now Seattleites want their turn to watch it.
