PRESIDENT’S REPORTDear Member,

I hope all Members had a solemn but relaxing Easter with family and friends, and that the “Easter Bunny” did not miss your house in his travels.

The recent Anzac Day also gave us cause to reflect on those men and women who have served our country in times of war, and the many who never

returned. Our fervent hope is that their sacrifices will never be forgotten by future generations, and that peace between all nations will endure.

On the Industry front, whilst all of the impending new regulations are being formalised, the politicians are now focusing on the upcoming federal election in September, with our industry having a brief respite from the constant attacks on Clubs. It is interesting to note that, at last, some focus is being directed at the ever-increasing presence that online gambling brings and the saturation that is allowed to enter our homes through television and the media. This is something that exposes our young people to possible problems in their future. Whilst it will be very difficult to control this form of gambling with any type of regulation, we hope that authorities will pursue all avenues with the same vigour they have with the Club Industry. Only time will tell.

Our Club is trading extremely well, and at this stage is ahead of our projected budget. Again, I must attribute our success to those four things that contribute to these results. They are of course, directors and management, staffing, facilities, and the number one factor, member support, without which all of the other elements become irrelevant.

Our Strategic Plan has been formalised and will be actioned according to priority over the coming years, and Members will be consulted on the various projects as planning progresses.

This year also marks the 50th year of our Club’s formation and plans are underway for various forms of celebration later in the year.

So again, may I thank all Members for their past support and hope that you continue to enjoy all of the many facilities that our Club offers.

keith aggettPresident

Season 2013 got off to a poor start by the Wests Tigers State Cup team with the team losing its first two matches after being in a strong position in both games.

However, its next three games produced wins, and with the Bye in Round 6 they are now in a solid position on the competition table.

The standard this season is very high and all matches are fiercely contested. The Wests Tigers squad comprises many young players, together with some experienced senior players, and barring injuries should ensure the team performs well over the season.

Results to date are as follows:-

V Cronulla lost 36-16

V Windsor lost 44-42

V Manly won 50-12

V Wentworthville won 26-24

V Canterbury won 22-18

Check website for more results.

The season’s draws and weekly results are on the club’s website www.releagues.com.au, and all matches are also advertised in the Club foyer each week for all fans. So come along to enjoy some exciting and skilful Rugby League each week.

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club is proud to be a supporter of the Wests Tigers. This year, as well as the Leagues Club

sponsoring the Wests Tigers, the Ryde-Eastwood District Football Club is sponsoring The Wests Tigers NSW Cup

team. The club was lucky enough to be paid a visit by the Tigers in February, fresh off a trial against the Roosters. The

Tigers had a rehab session in The Fitness Edge gymnasium, and a session in the swimming pool. Afterwards, the

Tigers met up with some fans (both club members and staff alike), signed autographs, and had photographs taken - a

selection of which is below. Go the Tigers for 2013! (Photos courtesy of Kevin Chamberlain).

CAMERA CLUB Our year has begun well with six new members joining us on our 2013 photographic journey. And our new members are sharing with us their love of capturing those special moments. At our first meeting for the year, we were introduced to the concept of a Photography Portfolio – a series of images which tell a story, develop a thought, and as a result, over time the quality of our photography will benefit. Our club Secretary has offered to mentor those of us who wish to tread this path, a path which should lead to better photography. Come and be a part of this journey. Enrichment of our images is always a consideration, and at our March Monday night meeting we were treated to a presentation – The Art of Textures. The presenter opened our minds to wonderful ways of adding that extra something to an image, which perhaps needed help to capture our attention. This was a most enjoyable evening. At our April meeting four of our members displayed images that they had taken, and then spoke about why they had taken the image, some technical information about the image, and how these images were fine-tuned before they were finally presented. This proved to be most beneficial to members, for it gave us an insight into images that we had seen before on competition nights, but had not had the opportunity to ask about the photograph. On April competition night, club members will be presenting their photographs of bridges. The trick is to take the photograph of your bridge in such a manner that makes the viewer go – wow, wonderful! We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its directors for their ongoing support, and especially for the refreshments they so kindly provide for us at each of our Monday night meetings. Come and join us. Look at photographs that members have taken. You can find out more about our club and its activities at – www.pbase.com/relccc. John Maynard

CHESS CLUB The club’s 42nd AGM was held on 30 January, electing the following officers for 2013: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vice-president – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Greig Edwards; Secretary – Rob Watson. Many thanks to Dennis Hale for his smooth secretaryship over the years. In February the annual Rapid Championship tournament was won by Arthur Huynh and Donato Mallari on 8/9, with Egon Cardenas third with 6/9. The U1600 division was won by Alan Marton and Vince Chiara on 4/9. The Club Championship preliminary tournament is halfway completed; leaders are: Group A – Lorenzo Escalante (4.5/5); Group B – Greig Edwards and Paul Gluvchinski (3/4); Group C – Rob Watson (4/5), and Chris Ball (4/4). On 10th April, the club was treated to a lecture by Ian Rogers, Australia’s first (and strongest so far) grandmaster. Forty members attended Ian’s informative exposition of some significant games from the recent World Championship Candidates Tournament (won by 22-year-old Magnus Carlsen of Norway), and some interesting background on the players and politics surrounding the event. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059), Greig Edwards (0412 248 223) or me, Rob Watson (0408 463 759).

Prizes are awarded to both men and women, and a light supper is enjoyed by members after the game. A special thanks to Rhonda Fekete

Runners-up on the day were Henry Urbanski in A Grade and Colin Cope in B grade. The Springs was a new venue, and congratulations go to Tony Campbell (A grade) and Colin Cope (B grade). INDOOR BOWLSAt our AGM the following committee was elected for 2013. President Narelle Waldock, Vice President Claire Grebert, Secretary Cath Lynn, Treasurer Merle Roach, Committee Jim Harvey, Harry Waldock, Shirley Robertson, Olive Meredith, Norma Brissett and Betty Beck. Sheila Bowcock, who has been Vice President for many years, did not stand, and we thank her for all the work she has done for indoor bowls. Merle Roach did not stand for Secretary but is still Treasurer. All best wishes to our new committee. New members are always welcome at indoor bowls. Wednesday Ladies at 10.30am and Thursday night Mixed at 7.30pm. They are always very friendly games. For enquiries please phone Narelle 9802 7688 or Cath 9876 5169.

SENIORS CLUB In February we held our Annual General Meeting. All incumbent Committee Members were elected unopposed, however two vacancies had become vacant, that of President and a further committee member. Betty Beck was elected President and Lorna Shepherd Committee Member, unopposed. We wish them both well in their positions. 2012 was a sad year for the Seniors, as six of our members passed away. We also have had one very sad loss, Margaret Clifton, who passed away in January this year. Margaret was one of our very popular committee members and she will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to John

and his family. With the support of our members we are still able to run our monthly bus trips and extended holidays away. Mother’s and Father’s Day lunches, together with the Tafe lunches, are very well attended and proving very popular. We are also again travelling to Doyle’s at Watson Bay for our annual Winter Lunch. We try to keep a little healthy with our Monday monthly walks around Sydney and thoroughly enjoy one another’s company. We have lots of outings planned for 2013 and a new venue this year for ‘Christmas in July’ celebrations. If the above is not to your liking a game of Auction Solo (cards) is played every Thursday at 1.30pm, and Merrilyn is on hand to help beginners. We meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at 11am. Our annual fee is only $5 so come along and make new friends and enjoy our outings. For more information please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419

SQUASH CLUBWe have commenced our competition for 2013. Welcome to all new players to the squash club. This comp we have 3 teams competing, a Div 4 (6th), Div 7 (3rd) and Div 8 (4th). It’s great to see all the fresh new faces who have recently joined the club. I wish you all the very best of luck for this comp. Current players, please make yourself known to the new players and assist them wherever needed. Just a quick reminder to all players that this year the internal Club Championship Round Robin will be played at the completion of the Autumn comp, so keep your eyes out for the draw. This is held once a year and is a great chance to play against better players, so get involved. Also, The Squash Club recently held its AGM at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and elected the committee for the upcoming year. Congratulations go to President: Ernie Speed, Secretary: Bev Speed, Treasurer: John Stapley. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Leagues Club for its ongoing support of the Squash Club; it is very much appreciated by all the players. Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a Thought: “When you lose, don’t lose the lesson”

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBHello Members. Our AGM Was held on 7th February at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club’s Function Centre where reports and the financial statement weretabled with election of officers for the coming year, which was accepted by members. This year, as required by Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, an independent review of our trading, receipts, and bank statements was included with our submission to the club for approval. Our first outing this year did not start well, with our coach arriving one and three quarter hours late after several phone calls. However, all was forgotten after the Towradgi members welcomed us and a good lunch and a good game of bowls was had by all. Considering the inclement weather that Saturday we were lucky to play at all. There was another trip on 14th April to Picton Bowling Club, and on 2nd June we go to Umina Bowling Club. Our contacts as usual are Marie Crawley, 9684 1023, and Bob Freeland, 9644 4792 or Mobile 0427 003 038. Look forward to your company. R. Freeland.

TRAVEL CLUBOur AGM was held in February and we hope this year will be as successful as last year. In February we went on a Sydney Harbour Luncheon cruise. Then in March we headed down to Kiama, which included a visit to the Heritage Centre. In April we had a trip to Lithgow and a visit to the small arms factory. Our Mother’s Day luncheon in May will be held at the club’s Golden Hawk Restaurant, always a successful day for everyone. A busy June and July will see visits to the Sydney Jewish Museum in June and our annual “Christmas” in July. We meet at 2pm on the first Tuesday of each month. New members are always welcome. Secretary, Shirley Wheadon 9888 7704

We are a family-friendly swim school that offers a broad range of lessons from 6 months of age up to adults, and we also cater for some swimmers with special needs. We operate our terms the same as public school terms, which makes it easier for our families, as everyone gets the chance to have a break and refresh for the next term. Our success is demonstrated through the high calibre of our coaches and instructors, who not only strive to get the best out of each of their swimmers but also have fun while doing so. All our instructors are Austswim qualified and we pride ourselves on our teamwork, excellent teaching methods, our outstanding reputation within the community and the high level of success we have experienced within the Swimming Industry. Our continual support and guidance offered to our families and our staff helps us to remain a swim school with a personal and caring approach while always keeping focus on water education and safety for all.

CeLebRatINg ouR swIMMeRs’ suCCessIt’s the time of year when our swimmers get the chance to showcase their swimming skills in their school carnivals. We love to hear of their achievements, both individually and in relays, and share their success with the swim school team.

Most schools have already run their swimming carnivals this year and we have a number of junior girl and boy champions, as well as a couple of record breakers! Many of our swimmers have represented their Zone then swum on to Regional representation. For all swimmers with carnivals coming up, we wish you the best of luck. You will see some of the names proudly displayed on our “Wall of Fame” near the swim school office. Well done to all and please keep sharing your success with us. We love to see everyone doing so well.

Come and see the swim school and help us to help your little ones learn the life skill of swimming and water safety, and perhaps get them on the road to making the area carnivals when they go to school! We have a number of Pre-schooler and Baby positions available in our swim school.
