Rye YMCA Annual Report 2013
BETTER TOGETHER!
PAGE 2 THE RYE Y ANNUAL REPORT 2013
OUR CAUSE: STRENGTHENING COMMUNITYAt the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day,
we work side by side with our neighbors to make sure that
everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the
opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
We believe that lasting personal and social change can come
about only when we all work together to invest in our kids,
our health, and our neighbors.
That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our
primary goal.

THE RYE Y ANNUAL REPORT 2013 PAGE 3
MAKING HISTORYDear Friends,
The Rye Y’s history was very much on our minds in 2013. Throughout the year, we poured over
yellowed news clippings, re-read decades-old newsletters and marveled at how far we’ve come
since the first board meeting in 1914.
A Centennial is a major milestone for any organization and the Rye Y is no exception. By the
time you read this Annual Report, we will be deep into our Centennial year celebration and all
the planning we did in 2013 a hazy memory.
The things that we remember best from the last year are the things we do best: summer camp,
chronic disease prevention, community outreach, swim lessons, supporting our members on
their wellness journey, and so much more. The programs and initiatives featured in these pages
are just a snapshot of our work, the highlights of a busy and productive year.
The truth is, in the midst of planning and celebrating our history, the Rye Y was making history
every day. We made history when we partnered with Open Door Family Medical Centers in Port
Chester to start the first two Spanish-language YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program classes. We
made history when we received the best results ever on our annual member satisfaction survey.
And we made history when we took nine dads and their young children on a memorable camp-
out in the Catskills before launching a new program—Adventure
Guides.
We’re proud of everything we accomplished in 2013 and in all the
years before that. We invite you to join us in celebration, and in
making new history…starting today.
Sincerely,
Gregg Howells Kevin Tice

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTWe believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve.
Our goal is to help youth cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behavior,
better health and educational success.
TEEN LEADERS
In partnership with the Hispanic
Resource Center, the Rye Y launched a
new Teen Leaders Club in Mamaroneck.
We also started a Junior Leaders Club
for middle school students at the Rye Y.
Teens from the new clubs, and from the
longstanding Leaders Club for Rye High
School students, joined their peers from
across the northeast at conferences in
November 2013.
SUMMER CAMP
Over 1200 summer campers felt a genuine sense of achievement, thanks to the new beads program at Discovery Camp. Every time the children learned a new skill or accomplished a task, they earned a bead on their own camp necklace. Campers learned vital swimming skills, a greater respect for our natural environment, a proper corner kick in soccer, and the difficult art of a forward handspring. Celebrating achievement is at the absolute heart of the summer day camp programs.
SCHOOL-AGE CHILD CARE
Sixty-five students in After School Adventures and Kinder Time challenged their taste buds in blind food tests designed to broaden their experience with healthy foods. We found out that hummus is definitely not their favorite! Our dedicated instructors also began a new US Tennis Associates program to increase the students’ daily physical activity and boost their interest inother sports.

YOUTH SPORTS
Youth sports teams swelled to record enrollment and even biggerachievements. Gymnasts took home awards from meets across Connecticut and even the Nationals in Savannah, Georgia. Twenty-five teams trained and scrimmaged in our Youth Basketball Leaguefrom November 2013 through February 2014 and our Wave RyedersSwim Team took the League Championships by storm once again.
HEALTHY LIVINGIn communities across the nation, the Y is a leader for health and well-being, bringing familiescloser together, encouraging good health and fostering connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.
PAGE 6 THE RYE Y ANNUAL REPORT 2013
YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
At the Y, adults at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes changetheir lives in dramatic ways. The YMCA’s Diabetes PreventionProgram lifestyle coaches don’t care how sedentary you’ve been or how badly you eat. The coaches and the group members become cheerleaders, consultants and confidants for each other.
In 2013, 17 adults completed the 16 core sessions of the program. And, thanks to a partnership with Open Door FamilyMedical Centers in Port Chester, we were able to hold our firsttwo Spanish-language classes outside the walls of the Y.
THE TRIBE
At the Y, adults join small groups that foster camaraderie and confidence.Last year’s TRIBE, a women’s training circle for first time tri-athletes, included 80 women ranging in age from 16 to 80.Their sense of accomplishmentafter completing their firsttriathlon will stay with them forthe rest of their lives.
LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA
In 2013, 100 cancer survivorsfound support through LIVE-STRONG at the YMCA, a free 12-week small group programthat helps them reclaim theirtotal health. Program participants built strength, endurance, and flexibility in asupportive group, all free ofcharge. Most importantly, theyconnected with others who GETit – the fear, the side effects of treatment, the hope, and the recovery.
SUPPPORTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN 2013!
HEALTHiER PoRT CHESTER & MAMARoNECK
Thanks to strong partnerships with Open Door, the
Hispanic Resource Center, and local clergy, we are
bringing community health initiatives to low-income
Latino and African-American residents in Port Chester
and Mamaroneck. A generous grant from the Westchester
Community Foundation, received in 2013, will allow us
to bring the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program into
the community and to hire “promotoras” – bilingual
community health workers who will reach out to their
neighbors about healthy eating, physical activity and
chronic disease prevention.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYFor nearly 100 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positivechange. From financial assistance that keeps the Y affordable for people who need our programs most, to the partnerships that foster strong communities, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work.
PAGE 8 THE RYE Y ANNUAL REPORT 2013
SCHOOL GARDENS
Since 2008, the Rye YMCA has supported school-based edible gardens by connecting schools with the resources theyneed to start, expand or sustain their garden. We believe that giving students the opportunity to get their handsdirty – literally – fosters healthy eating and physical activity habits that last a lifetime. In 2013, the Rye Y conductedan online survey to learn about the challenges and successes of school gardens in our area. As a result, we beganplanning “Seeds to Schools” – a workshop for school gardeners that took place in March 2014. We also awardedgrants of $1,500 each to Port Chester Middle School, Thomas Edison Elementary School and JFK Magnet School tosupport edible gardens at these Port Chester schools.
OPENING OUR DOORS
The Rye Y opened our pool to a dozen families with special needs children every Sunday morning. During this free, recreational swim for community members, a Rye Y facilitator assisted with helpfultips and water games. We also hosted two blood drives and provided subsidies to several programs, including pool time for the Rye Association for the Handicapped.
A NoTE FRoM oNE oF
ouR Y FAMiLiES:
“I don't know if you can
appreciate how important the
Special Needs Family Swim is to
our family. It is the ONLY
activity that we can do as a
family where everyone can
participate equally and
everyone can have fun. If
you can imagine how difficult
it is to do anything together
when one member of a family
has significant challenges, you
may begin to see how that one
45 minute window helps our
whole family feel like just
that – a family. We cannot
thank you enough.”
SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS
Safe Routes to School is a national movement to educate pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and policy-makers about traffic safety and to encouragewalking – especially for students. In 2013, the Rye Y supported Walk toSchool Weeks, providing resources, advice and assistance to schoolsthroughout our service area. In Rye, we convened meetings of municipaland school officials and community advocates to review pedestriansafety projects. And, we sponsored “Heads Up,” a poster contest that involved 65 Rye High School students in thinking about the dangers ofdistracted walking and driving.

SOCIALRESPONSIBILITY: The Y Cares program allows the Rye
YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the
communities we serve: no-one will be
turned away from Y programs and
services because he or she can’t pay.
In 2013 alone, the Y awarded over
$625,000 in financial aid to 424 families
in need. Scholarships allowed children
to join their peers at camp, while
membership subsidies gave adults,
seniors and families the full Y experi-
ence, often during difficult times.
Thanks to generous support from
individuals, businesses and foundations, Y Cares is meeting the growing need in our communities.

STORYPROJECT TED LEviNE
I’m going to be
87 years old. I’ve
always kept in
shape by walking
between one and
three miles a day.
But then I
wondered, would
it be good to use
one of these
machines? I’ve
lived in Rye for
44 years and was
a member of the
Y for a brief pe-
riod 25 years ago, when my kids were young. I
rejoined about two months ago and started using
the bike, the arm bike and the strength training
machines.
I feel just wonderful; it’s such a difference. I can
measure it. Two months ago, I was at a level four
on the bike. Now I’m at level 11. I’m just so
delighted; I can’t tell you. And helping me do this
is your wonderful staff. Anytime you ask some-
thing, you get answers quickly and efficiently.
Walking is wonderful, but it doesn’t use your
muscles in the way they can be used. I’m still
walking, but now I have more energy. I just feel
good, better than ever. Before, I figured that I’d
live to be 90. Now, I figure I’ll live to 100.
YOSHIMI NISHIZAWA
We moved here from Tokyo and have been living in Rye forthree years – my husband, my 12-year old son and me. We joined the Y as family members in July 2013. We didn’tneed to join the Y before because my son enjoys soccer inthe spring, summer and fall. In the winter, he plays indoorsoccer and skiing. The reason we decided to join, partly, was because of my disease. Since last spring, I’ve had jointpain everywhere, but especially in my leg and ankle. I hadbeen walking around Rye, but the pain made it difficult towalk smoothly or exercise freely. So I had to find some other exercise.
My doctor recommended exercise by swimming. That wasthe only exercise I could do at the time. In the water is theonly place I don’t feel pressure on my joints. I swim at leastfour days a week, each time only thirty minutes or so, butit’s good. I’ve recovered my strength. I feel very energizedafter swimming. My husband enjoys swimming on the weekend and he says he has lost weight. All together, ourfamily enjoys ping pong and my son likes the foosball be-cause it’s soccer. The Rye Y is agood place. Even in the winterwe can enjoy basketball, ping pongand swimming.

GRETCHEN MEiLi
I am serious about my exercise. I started running in the
1970s and did a couple marathons. I walked the last five
miles in both. I decided I needed a more thorough, extensive
kind of exercise so I took up wind surfing. I wanted, needed,
to be really fit to do that sport. So I started coming to the
fitness center here. My favorite machine was the rowing
machine because it is the most like windsurfing. I’m cur-
rently recovering from spinal surgery so can’t windsurf for
another six months. Windsurfing is like a surf board with a
sail. It is very scientific; you have to think about the wind,
the aerodynamics, all sorts of forces. You have to assess
where you are and the tides and all the risks. I never go alone.
I’m using the spin bicycles now, focusing on my legs because I can’t exercise
my upper body yet. My whole family is athletic; when we get together we all
discuss our exercise and sports. I love bringing my grandchildren here – we’ve
done everything here. We’ll go in the racquetball court. We don’t know anything
about the game but we have the greatest time. The staff is very helpful.
Whenever I ask a question, they jump to help. I enjoy chatting with other
members. The Y is very much a vital part of my life because of the welcome I
get here and the people who work here. I can’t tell you how welcome I feel.
That is very important to me.
YAMILETH VALLARINO AND DAUGHTER NAOMI
I first started coming to the Rye Y when Iwas working for a local family taking care oftheir kids and I used to bring them to the Yfor classes and programs. And then a fewyears ago, my family and I moved to Rye nottoo far from the Y. I started bringing myown daughter, Naomi, to several classes including ballet, gymnastics and swimming. We love the instructors like Ellen Watermelon, Dawny Dew and Chiara.
My husband and I both use the fitness center and I am here at least four days aweek. I live close by so I just walk over forall the activities with my daughter. The Y isreally like a second home for our family andwe really love it here. We’ve met a lot ofpeople and made a lot of friends. And nowwith Naomi getting ready for kindergartennext year, weare hoping to enroll her inthe KinderTime program, which runsafter school.
in November 2013, Rye Y members,
staff and volunteers shared their
personal stories, from the back stories
that brought them to the Y to the
successes and challenges encountered
on the road to healthy living, during
the Y’s 2nd Annual “voices from the
Community: The Rye Y Story Project.”
Four of the dozens of stories collected
are featured here.
