Integrative Social Work PracticeA Contemporary Perspective
In recent history the practice of medicine and mental health has been increasingly eclectic as more and more practitioners harness seemingly disparate therapies and techniques to arrive at clinical breakthroughs. But while social work pro-fessionals have been involved in integrative prac-tice informally and intuitively for years, resources to bring structure to this therapeutic concept have been few and far between. In response, Integra-tive Social Work Practice offers innovative ways of conceptualizing cases, communicating with clients and making better therapeutic use of client individuality. Rich in research, evidence-based and clinical material from a variety of settings, the book begins with the basic organizing principles behind effective integrative practice.
Features 7 Provides a unifying theory of social work practice 7 Reviews existing clinical and research literature on integrated approaches 7 Offers practical guidelines to inform treatment, supervi-sion and training of clinicians
Contents Preface.- Integration or Eclecticism: Rationale for an Integrative Theory.- Contemporary Psychody-namic Models.- Developmental Models.- Cogni-tive and Behavioral Models.- The Body-Mind Connection.- Making Assessments and Choosing Interventions.- An Integrative Approach to Thera-peutic Relationships.- Small Steps and Manageable Goals.- Building and Working with an Integrative Team.- Working on and Working through.

Democracy and Judicial Reforms in South-East EuropeBetween the EU and the Legacies of the Past
This book analyses judicial reforms in five coun-tries of South-East Europe, focusing on two spe-cific factors influencing the outcome of reforms: the role played by the European Union in the light of the pre-accession process and the legacies of past communist regimes. (Dys-)Functionalities of CorruptionComparative Perspectives and Methodological Pluralism.
Corruption is usually understood as hamper-ing political development, economic growth and democratic participation of citizens, but compar-ing the effects of corruption for different political regimes presents astonishingly complex findings. The ongoing persistence of corruption underlines that it is not only dysfunctional, but can be highly functional as well. This special issue brings togeth-er contributions from comparative politics, politi-cal science and economics which precisely focus on these (dys)functionalities of corruption in political regimes across various world regions. The question of methodological pluralism is especially important for studying corruption comparatively. While on an international level a trend towards an increased use of quantitative methods in political science as well as in economics can be observed, the special issue underlines the importance of hav-ing a pluralistic approach for grasping the complex and multi-layered effects of the phenomenon. Of similar importance is the adoption of a com-parative perspective that includes different world regions in order to understand the different roles of corruption in developing, transforming and developed countries alike. Agency and Media ReceptionExperiencing Video Games, Film, and Television
What happens to our sense of agency, our general ability to perform actions in our lifeworlds, in the course of media reception and appropriation? Whilst considering media communication as a special form of social action, this work reconsiders the key concepts of social action theory, pragma-tism, communication theory, as well as film, game, and television theory. It thus integrates agency as the key to understanding ‘doing media’ and at the same time conceptualizes agency as a specific mode of involvement across media boundaries. This approach amalgamates miscellaneous ideas and conceptions such as interactivity, participa-tion, cognitive control, play or empowerment and applies the theoretical considerations on the basis of textual analyses of the films Inception and The Proposal, the TV shows Lost and I’m a Celebrity and the video games Grand Theft Auto IV, and The Walking Dead.

The Management of Cultural World Heritage Sites and the Development of AfricaEver since the signing of the World Heritage Con-vention 40 years ago, and ratified by 33 African countries, to date, only 43 cultural heritage sites have been successfully proclaimed as World Heri-tage Sites in Africa. These include archaeological and historical sites, religious monuments and cultural landscapes. This book is a re-evaluation of the nomination and management of cultural World Heritage sites in Africa from the late 1970s when the Island of Gorée of Senegal and the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ethiopia were first inscribed on the WHL until today. It considers whether a cred-ible and well balanced WHL has been attained, especially in regards to the nomination of more sites in Africa. The book also examines the roles and contribution of various heritage organiza-tions and African governments to the nomina-tion and management of cultural World Heritage sites in Africa. Lastly, the volume also scrutinizes economic development, which may result from the nomination and successful management of cultural World Heritage sites in Africa.
Features 7 Re-evaluates the nomination and management of cultural World Heritage sites in Africa 7 Scru-tinizes economic development and effects of World Heritage Sites 7 Authors are drawn from highly experienced academic researchers on World Heritage sites and administrators working in heritage organizations

Low Fertility and Population Aging in Japan and Eastern AsiaThis book provides a unique comparative view of the extremely low fertility and drastic population aging in Eastern Asian countries. After discussing demographic and political developments of Japan in detail as a reference case, accelerated changes in Korea, Taiwan and China are interpreted with a comparative cultural view. In addition to the well-known cultural divide between countries with strong and weak family ties, this book proposes another divide between offspring of the feudal family and that of the Confucian family. Included is a discussion of how the discrepancy between the compressed change in the socioeconomic system and the slow change in the family system has resulted in extremely low fertility in Eastern Asia.
Features 7 Presents a comparative cultural view of family patterns in Eastern Asia based on historical and anthropological findings 7 Includes original mathematical and formal demographic analyses of fertility decline, the impact of policy interventions and population aging 7 Makes thorough refer-ence to Japanese, Korean and Chinese literatures on the latest demographic and political develop-ments in fertility decline and population aging

Tamed Village “Democracy”Elections, Governance and Clientelism in a Contemporary Chinese Village
Wang’s book offers an empirically rich and conceptually nuanced analysis of how local state agents maintain control over village self-gover-nance in China. His careful analysis of primary documents enables him to explicate the formal mechanisms used by members of the local state to influence village affairs. Meanwhile, his rigorous and fascinating ethnographic data enable him to elucidate the manifold ways in which informal cli-entelist ties between local state officials and village elites permit the former to exert control. Overall, this excellent book powerfully demonstrates the need for scholars to go beyond attention to election processes when evaluating what village democracy means in a Chinese context.
Features 7 An insider’s in-depth exploration of village pol-itics in contemporary rural China, among the first books of its kind in English literature 7 Applies a clientelist perspective to explain the state-society relationship in Chinese politics 7 Accessible and interesting for both China researchers and general readers keen on understanding Chinese society and Chinese political culture
Contents Introduction.- The Social and System Background of Villagers’ Self-Governance.- Villagers as Clients and “Locked-in” Voters.- Candidates, Patrons and Factions.- The Role of Local State Officials in Village Elections.- Village Self-Governance: a “Democratic” Style?.- The Local State’s Sustained Control of Village Governance.- Conclusion.

Promoting Aboriginal HealthThe Family Wellbeing Empowerment Approach
This is a book on trends in development research with particular focus on Aboriginal Australia. As a multidisciplinary team the author and colleagues have undertaken 10-12 systematic literature searches of trends in a wide range of aspects of Aboriginal development. Examples of the reviews include Aboriginal education research output 1980-2000s; community development since 2000; cultural competency since 2000; child/maternal health since 1990s; the economics and Aboriginal development research, etc . The main rationale for this book is that governments and research poli-cymakers are struggling to find ways to assess the contribution of research to the growth of particu-lar fields of research. The approaches to date such as citation frequency, proportion of research grant allocated to particular fields, etc all have serious limitations. The authors are proposing an alterna-tive supplementary approach which is to examine the total publication output of the field over time in terms of types of publications, quality of the publications and engagement with key priority issues, e.g. sustainability. The main target audience will be research policy makers, researchers and research students.
Features 7 Presents a qualitative study the Family Well-being empowerment program for Aboriginal Australians 7 Explores the nature and benefits of empowerment from the point of view of a par-ticular group 7 Illuminates a neglected aspect of Aboriginal health

The Bioarchaeology of Space and PlaceIdeology, Power, and Meaning in Maya Mortuary Contexts
The Bioarchaeology of Space and Place inves-tigates variations in social identity among the ancient Maya by focusing on individuals and small groups identified archaeologically by their inclu-sion in specific, discrete mortuary contexts or by unusual mortuary treatments. Utilizing archaeo-logical, biological, and taphonomic data from these contexts, the studies employ a variety of methodological approaches to reconstruct aspects of individuals’ life-course and mortuary pathways. Following this, specific mortuary behaviors are discussed in relation to their local or regional cultural setting using relevant archaeological, eth-nohistoric, and/or ethnographic data in an effort to interpret their meaning within the broader so-cial, political and economic contexts in which they were carried out. This volume covers a number of topics that are currently being debated in Maya archaeology, including identification and discus-sion of the role and extent of human sacrifice in Maya culture, the use of ancestors for maintaining political power, the mortuary use of caves by both elites and non-elites, ethnic distinctions within urban areas, and the extent of movement of people between communities.
Features 7 Uses well-conceived frameworks for integrat-ing data from various fields (skeletal, archaeologi-cal, ethnohistoric, cultural etc) 7 Focuses on individuals and small groups rather than aggregate data in Mayan society 7 Each chapter contains a literature review
