Scriptural Reflection for the Week “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.” (see Ma hew 10:26-33) With these words, Jesus is reminding us of every Chris an’s basic voca on or calling in life. It is to give witness to Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Do you “acknowledge” or “make known” before others the living, merciful Jesus of the Gospels? Or rather do you present a picture of prac cing a religion that is devoid of true Faith? Everyday life is filled with opportuni es to make Jesus Christ known and loved. We may do so whenever we offer words of forgiveness and reconcilia on. We may do so in performing concrete acts of charity towards the poor, the sick, and the forgo en one. We may do so when we speak to the major issues of the day, from the supernatural perspec ve of Faith instead of the poli cally correct account which o en is directly opposed to the Gospel. Do I witness to the sacredness of every human life? Do I witness to the sacredness of the marriage bond? Do I witness to the need to advocate for the poor and defenseless ones in society? Do I witness to the cause of peace and jus ce? In all these we “acknowledge” Jesus Christ before others. Farewell and God Bless Father Johnny! Today is Father’s last day with us. We pray his sabba cal may be a frui ul one and he may con nue to serve God and the Church with an even greater zeal and dedica on. Family Fes val Con nues — un l Sunday night at 10pm. Join us for good food, entertainment, and family fun. Plus, you help support your Parish’s mission in the community as you do so! Perpetual Adora on Chapel I have received permission from the Bishop for such a Chapel. It will be located in the former Convent building. Work should begin soon providing a separate entrance to the Chapel as well as other upgrades. Over this summer, we will begin to recruit Adorers (there must be at least two people present at all mes). Please seriously consider a day(s) and me(s) you would want to volunteer. There are many blessings that come to a Parish which undertakes this effort. Let’s join together to provide a Chapel where someone can come any me of the day or night to be in the presence of our Eucharis c Lord. Watch the bulle n for informa on updates. One Final Thought “Happiness can’t be found without prayer.”

- Saint Teresa of Calcu a

The Psalmist assures us that “the Lord hears the poor.” Often, however, He answers their need through the generous gifts of good stewards.

PRAYER CORNER

Dear God, give me courage, for perhaps I lack it more than anything else. I need courage before men against their threats, I need courage to bear unkindness, I need courage to fight against the devil, against terrors and troubles, tempta ons, a rac ons, darkness and false lights, against tears, depression, and above all fear. I need Your help, dear God. Strengthen me with Your love and Your grace. Console me with Your blessed Presence and grant me the courage to persevere un l I am with You forever in heaven. AMEN.

HEARTFELT THANK YOU – FROM FR. JOHNNY My journey here began with a suggestion in 2004 by my good friend, our beloved Fr. Bill O’Rourke, that I visited at St. Catherine of Sienna for a short time to complete my doctoral dissertation. After returning to my parish in Chicago, I was humbled and excited when my other good friend, Msgr. Tom Groenwold, asked me to continue my stay at St. Catherine’s. I keep these two men in my heart everyday, for what they have meant to me as mentors and friends. I also remember with fondness Fr. Dennis and Fr. Walter who welcomed me in 2005. To my brother priests, Fathers Rick, Ed, Frank, Charlie, Allan, Emmanuel and our summer priest Fr. Tony at this great parish, I thank you for your backing, your strength, and your guidance.

DURING THESE YEARS: We have together grown in faith with the formation and advancement of many liturgical ministries. As the living Body of Jesus we worked to build a community centered and focused around Christ crucified: Altar servers, Lectors, Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Music Ministry, Greeters, and Sacristans. We started the Men’s Ministry, enjoying great times in sharing the Scriptures and breaking open the Word of God together. We set off hospitality after Mass every first Sunday of the month to reinforce the message of community and love to one another. We opened Sienna Small Fries, a former ministry for little kids which met once a week before they started school. To the many who have been through the RCIA, thank you for allowing me to journey with you whom have walked together to experience the power of God’s calling. To all who have travelled and helped lead the many Spiritual Journeys over these years. Our journeys have been a great experience through which we encountered God, reflecting on the Gospels and the lives of holy men and women. As a parish, we increased our focus on the rightful devotion to the Blessed Mother by bringing home her statue from Fatima during the Year of Mary which now goes from house to house along with the Cup of Prayer - which was also added to the In Home Prayer at the end of the Year of the Priest. The pinnacle of my ministry has been, and will continue to be, the Eucharistic Celebration and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Friday Adoration started as one hour each week, and by the grace of God has grown to a 12-hour weekly adoration and an overnight 24-hour adoration on the first Friday of every month.

MORNING STAR: I wish to convey my very special gratitude to the Morning Star Youth Ministry for the joy of working with Teens, young adults, children and parents in building the Kingdom of God. This ministry has guided me in my own journey, seeing the young people grow in faith by adoring the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, devoting themselves to the Blessed Mother, and above all serving the people of God - the Thanksgiving dinners, Summer Night Dinner Dances, New Year’s Eve Dances, Café Sienna, Soup Suppers, the Christmas Shows and the Living Stations of the Cross. I must recognize those who have sacrificed much of their time to keep our Youth Ministry vibrant and to ensure that it continues -To Mary Diaz, thank you for your kind generosity and help, in bringing forth to shine in service, the creative gifts and talents of all young people and adults of Morning Star. To Linda, Arthur, Lustrida, Wendy, Gulliano, Tizanna, Lynette, Jonathan & Martha thank you for your willingness to help our ministry in forming our youth. Thanks to Jill, Michael, Debbie, Ron, Mark, Jen and Saverio for your tremendous support to make things happen. Thank you to all Parish, Faith Formation, Outreach and all ministries staff and volunteers for your amazing help during my stay here at St. Catherine of Sienna Parish. You, ONE & ALL have been part of my ministry and journey. I take this opportunity to thank everyone whom I now call, my family and my friends, for sharing your life, your blessings and, most importantly, this ministry together with me here at St. Catherine of Sienna Parish. Through you, God has provided me with unexplainable generosity and support for each of these 12 years. And I truly believe that "whenever I count my blessings, I find myself becoming more grateful because the good things of life outweigh the not so pleasant things that are happening in my life." Thank you. May God ever bless you and reward you.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED

The Vincent De Paul Society mourns the death of John White. John started the Society's work here in 1955. He worked tirelessly to help those in the community who needed help or just a friendly ear. John was compassionate and generous with his time, talent, and treasure. John will be missed but his work will continue. He was truly a friend of the poor. Contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society.

John's work continues at the food pantry. All non-perishable food items are gratefully received and used. Thank you for your continuing support.

We recently had a visitor to Outreach, actually it was a former “Guest”. They were in the area and stopped by to say thank you for the compassion, support and help they received during a few troubling years in their lives. They told us that since receiving the help they needed, the family had an opportunity and was able to relocate to another area and are doing very well. It was so wonderful to see a smile on their faces as they were recounting how blessed they have been, and how grateful they are for all the help provided by St. Catherine’s.

As always, we tell those who come to thank us that the thanks belongs to the whole parish — it is the faithful parishioners and community members who donate privately, through the poor box collection envelopes, through the requests in the bulletin and our Memorials-Tributes, etc. that are the ones who should receive the thanks. Without these generous donations we would not be able to help the needy within our parish boundaries regardless of their faith.

Thanks to all for answering the gospel call... “Lord when did we see you hungry? … Whatever you do to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me”

PLAN FOR HEAVEN

Our Lady said that the rosary can stop wars,

and can bring world peace. We have to do what she said,

and live good lives. There’s no other plan from heaven

that’s so specific, for what we’re going through now.

She [the Blessed Mother] spelled it out.

Prayer, penance, the First Saturdays’ devotion — and live a good, holy life.

That’s the answer.

Mary Matters

Hearts Connected T his past Friday we celebrated the Feast of the

Sacred Heart of Jesus; one of the most popular Catholic devotions. Many are familiar

with the image but there is so much more to it. In fact, Divine Mercy, the feast of Corpus Christi and the Eucharist, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary are all interconnected! You may also notice they are back to back feasts on the liturgical calendar. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has its roots all the way back to the time of the Apostles, particularly Saint John because he was

known as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He was called the “Apostle of Love” due to the theme of love repeated in his Gospel, and because he had the special privilege of reclining on the chest of Jesus at the Last Supper. Saint Gertrude the

Great had a mystical experience (on the feast day of Saint John) where she was granted the grace to rest near the living heart of Jesus. Four centuries later in 1673, Jesus appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque showing her a vision of the now famous image and revealing His desire for widespread devotion to his Sacred Heart. On June 11, 1899, Pope Leo XIII, at the request of Jesus, solemnly consecrated the world to His Sacred Heart calling the event “the great act” of his pontificate. In the revelations to Saint Gertrude and Saint Margaret Mary, Jesus shows the Sacred Heart is more than a symbol used to represent His love; it is also His real heart of flesh. The real, physical Sacred Heart of Jesus made present to us in the Eucharist! Speaking of love, Divine Mercy is closely connected with His Sacred Heart, because it is from His great love that infinite mercy pours out. In the image revealed to Saint Faustina, the red and white rays signify the blood and water which flowed from the side of Jesus at the point of the centurion’s spear (noticeably shown coming from His heart.) Many great saints (like Saint Catherine of Sienna) had a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Their devotions include prayer, frequent Holy Communion, visiting the Blessed Sacrament, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Blessed Virgin Mary. It is no coincidence that the feast day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the day following the Sacred Heart feast day. Remember Jesus received his flesh and blood, including the organ of His heart, from Mary. We also know of the connection of Mary’s heart with the heart of Jesus during the Passion (as foretold by Simeon). This connection is captured in the image of the Miraculous Medal which has the letter “M” at the foot of the cross and entwined with it just above the image of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart side by side. From the moment of the Annunciation through the Passion and into eternity, Mary is intimately connected to Jesus. Let us turn to Our Lady and her Son that our hearts may always be full of love!

O L F Our Faith Community unites

in celebra on of the 100th Anniversary of OUR LADY

appearing in parish of Fa ma on 13th day each month

May — October to the shepherd children

Lucia, Jacinta, & Francisco.

On the evening of June 13 at 7:30pm a crowd gathered to celebrate the second appari on of Our Blessed Mother, Mary — Our Lady of Fa ma!

Prior to Mass Msgr. Rick installed New Members and Officers of Confraternity of Chris an Mothers.

Just as there were faith-filled people to witness the second appari on one hundred years ago, we had more people with us for our second celebra on. There were more than 150 people — adults and children — raising their voice in praise and song.

Msgr. Rick, our pastor, at homily reminded all of need to pray, pray daily; and pray the Rosary as Our Lady requested for conversion.

Following the homily many processed to the statue of Our Lady of Fa ma to place rose(s) represen ng individuals not ac ve in the faith with prayer inten on for their return. Many placed wri en inten ons and first name of individuals in an inten on basket near the statue.

A er Mass the Rosary was led by women from a few of our parish prayer groups.

Join us to celebrate THIRD APPARITION THURSDAY, JULY 13

Look for more details in future bulle ns!

PRAY FOR ALL OUR PRIESTS AND THEIR INTENTIONS IN THE DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE AND THE WORLD FOR EACH ARE CALLED BY GOD TO SERVE HIM AND SERVE HIS CHURCH!

We celebrated Our Lady of Fatima Second Apparition & Confraternity of Christian Mothers Annual Installation of New Officers and Members . . .

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

Brothers, I for my part do not consid-er myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit

toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus. Phil 3: 13-14

SPECIAL COLLECTION:

PETER’S PENCE

Next weekend, July 1-2, our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collec on, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: vic ms of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world.
