SEAS in your

will!

Prepare the Way of the Lord – Advent is our annual time of anticipation and expectation for the coming of Jesus at Christmas and, ultimately, at the end of time. During this season we make many preparations so that we can be ready to meet the Lord. We prepare our hearts through prayer and reconciliation to be a fitting place of welcome for Jesus to dwell. We also prepare our homes as

places of warm hospitality to welcome neighbors and strangers alike with a loving and generous heart. This Advent, we also find ourselves anticipating the changes that will soon be upon us as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. How are you preparing for the new realities in our parishes? Will your heart meet these changes with resistance or with the resolve to do what it takes to foster new life in your community and help grow the Church? Take some time this Advent to prepare the way of the Lord as he comes to make us and our Church ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD!

The Lord Jesus and his apostles spoke of Judgment Day as applicable both to individuals and to everyone collectively. Following their teaching, the Church expects both a “particular Judgment” for each of us at the moment of death, and also a “general Judgment” for all collectively at the end of the world. The general Judgment does not reverse particular Judgment but ratifies and completes it.

You might suspect when you will face your own death and particular Judgment. But not so the general Judgment: The world always seems headed to the end, and no one knows when God’s providence will allow its final trauma to come. Even if you can’t know when either Judgment comes, you can still prepare. The Lord wants you to pray for it and for yourself in the midst of it: “Thy Kingdom come…Lead us not into the time of tribulation, but deliver us from the Evil One.” Judgment comes, and the Lord wants you to rehearse for it by forgiving and being forgiven.

SEAS Parish offers several opportunities for confession remaining in the Advent season:

Wednesday, December 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.;

Monday, December 18, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. (the penance service for children);

Wednesday, December 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (the adult penance service); and

every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. At the request of a Catholic organization, I wrote a longer reflection on this subject. If you’re interested, you can read it at https://www.catholicscholars.org/TTFlist.php.

Congratulations to parishioner and Boy Scout Robert Chabalie, who last week received his Eagle Award. One requirement of the Eagle Award is the planning and execution of a large service project. For his project, Robert undertook the initial landscaping around our new pavilion.

SEAS Parish is in the midst of a special matching offer for the 2017 Parish Share Program: New gifts and pledges will be matched up to $25,000. At the time this bulletin was prepared, we’d only received an additional $11,000. If you’re planning to give but haven’t yet done so, please send in a pledge form or other explanatory note so that we can take advantage of the matching offer.

HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS

Know, Love, and Share Your Faith

The sixth quality of a new evangelist from Bishop Robert Barron’s book, How To Share Your

Faith, is “having a knowledge and a love for the traditions of the Church”. Why do we need

the tradition of the Church? The Bishop tells us it’s because “...architecture to art to lives of

the saints to liturgy...go back ultimately to the Bible...The Bible is the soul of theology.” But

then he carries the thought further by indicating that all of Catholic Tradition comes from

Jesus Christ, and is inspired by him. If we love him, we’ll love what is of him, just as we love to

see pictures and hear stories of someone we love.

The seventh quality of a new evangelist for Bishop Barron is “to be adept at using the new

media”. He illustrates via an example of putting something on YouTube or a podcast that

allows preaching to be heard all over the world. “It’s counter-intuitive not to use the new

media because Jesus says, ‘Go and announce to all the nations’. “ What’s the best way to

do that? Using the Worldwide Web.” He encourages us to learn the technology and to use

it. Then, even individually, we can proclaim the Gospel to multiple people simultaneously.

Of course there is a caveat: “Let it be undergirded by a strong intellectual grasp of the

tradition.”

We’re now into our precious Advent Season. Why not look into some of our Advent

traditions and prayers, and post something on your Facebook page or in an email to a

group of your contacts, sharing what you love about the wonderful Season of Advent?

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the one bringing good news,

announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, saying to Zion,

“Your God is King!"

A Symbolic Sign for Christ at Christmas The Carlynton High School Junior Class is selling luminaria kits. The luminaria tradition has

roots in 16th century Spain, where small bonfires lit the way to church on Christmas Eve.

Today, Christians light the way to their homes to symbolically welcome Jesus on Christmas Eve.

Luminaria are best displayed in a row along your driveway, sidewalk or steps. For your

convenience, orders will be taken at SEAS parish and kits will be delivered here; but you don’t
