Thank you Friends of Warrandyte Primary School Many voters would have enjoyed their sausage in bread whilst casting their votes across the election weekend! We would like to thank our parent volunteers, and especially the Friends of Warrandyte Primary School committee who helped organ-ise and run the BBQ. Over $1500 was raised – a tremendous effort! I would partic-ularly like to thank Liz and Meg for all of their time and hard work. Attitudes to School Survey - WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's school experience.

Students from Year 4 to 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and re-search purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the re-sponse file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 29 April to Friday 7 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to com-plete and occurs during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.

Survey results will be communicated to parents through annual reporting.

Compass Log in

Cherise this week emailed a message to all of our families about our expectation for Compass and other important

dates to note. We are expecting that both parents will log into our Compass portal so that you are always up to date

with what is happening.

Working together with our Pre Schools

This week Yarra Warra Pre School has been visiting our school. We hosted their first group of students on Tuesday

and look forward to seeing their second group on Friday. We are passionate about developing strong partnerships

between parents, preschools and our school. We aim to make the move to school as smooth as possible for all chil-

dren and families. We want to help children make sense of the changes that come with starting school. Visits to local

schools during the kindergarten year build children’s familiarity with school.

We really enjoyed having the kinder kids and their parents at our school. It was a great opportunity also for parents

to see our wonderful school and have a chat to us about their questions.

Kylie and I would like to especially thank Michelle Chan for organising a lovely morning tea with tea, coffee, cakes

and slices on offer. We also would like to thank our current parents for staying and having a chat to the visiting kind-

er parents .

Recent events and current statistics highlight that as a nation we have a serious problem when it comes to domes-

tic violence. While there’s no easy solution, together, we can do our part to stop violence against women. If you’re

a parent or guardian, you can play an important role. Disrespect towards girls can begin in childhood, and we can

break the cycle when we teach our children to be respectful and caring right from the start.

As parents, we have three main jobs:

First, to love our children and build a strong lifetime bond

Second, to keep them safe from harm until they can do that for themselves

Third, to teach them all the skills they need to thrive in life and to make a positive difference in the world

Life skills approach to raising children

So what life skills do children need to learn when it comes to the issue of preventing violence against girls and

women? As parents, we can talk with our kids about:

Behaving respectfully towards others

Communicating their needs using words and without the need to hit, snatch or shout

Managing their emotions and their behaviours so as not to ‘fly off the handle’

Start the conversation about respect early

Start by responding to your child calmly when they are disrespectful to others. The following three-step communi-

cation approach can be used from early childhood through to teen years. Let’s put it into practice.

If a boy is making fun of his sister or a female friend:

1. STOP: Respond calmly rather than react asking him to stop the teasing.

2. EMPATHISE: Invite your son to see the behaviour through the eyes of his sister. ‘How do you think your sister/

friend feels right now?’

3 EDUCATE: Provide options such as ignoring his sister or friend if she’s annoying him or providing an appropriate

social script he can use to communicate his thoughts such as, “I find it annoying when you don’t share the comput-

er”

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

When it comes to gaining academic knowledge and learning skills, parents know it takes years of consistent effort

from childhood through to adolescence. In the same way, parents can take a long-term approach to teaching life

skills beginning right from toddler to teen.

Parents lead the way

Parents are powerful teachers and role models for the next generation. We can teach our children how to be re-

spectful and kind to each other. By stopping disrespect and violence at the start we can play a crucial role in putting

an end to violence against girls and women.

Resources you can use

The Stop it at the Start campaign provides parents, family members and others with information and practical re-

sources to self-reflect, and talk to boys and girls aged 10-17 about being respectful and caring. You can find videos,

guides and other resources to help you have conversations with your children at

www.respect.gov.au/resources/talking-about-respect.

There is so much we can do in families to develop healthy attitudes toward women. Through modelling and teach-

ing we can change entrenched attitudes and behaviours that will put an end to the cycle of violence against wom-

en.

OSHC News This week at aftercare has been a cold one! This has not stopped us from enjoying our week and doing fun indoor activities. We have participated in Star Wars yoga to warm us up in the morning and watched the original Jumunji (by popular demand) in the afternoon to escape the wet out-side. We will finish our week with some superhero themed activities – and the children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero, next Thursday, especially as they will also be making their own super hero paper ma-che mask.

It has been a great week!

We are also celebrating May’s birthday’s this week with a cake! Happy birthday to: Josh. W, Harvey, Rhys, Mani, Luella, Quinn, Emmett and Olive!

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019

This year we are participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to

obtain new educational resources for our school and all we need to do is shop at Woolworths for your groceries.

From Wednesday 1 May to Tuesday 25 June, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. Place the stick-

ers onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into

the Collection Box here at school. This year we are lucky enough to have a Collec-

tion Box outside Woolworths at The Pines shopping centre.

At the end of the promotion, we will be able to procure some great new equip-

ment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – in-

cluding resources for Maths, ICT, Science, Sports, Arts & Crafts and more.

Please inform your relatives, friends and neighbours to collect the Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers for our school.

The time is fast approaching for Zara to be attending the 31st Asian Pacific Children’s Convention in Japan this July. She is looking for individuals or businesses that would be willing to donate small gifts for giving to the children / officials that they meet on behalf of our community here in Warrandyte. It is seen as a way to show respect and to introduce where everyone is from. Ideally small badges, bookmarks, books but especially anything typically ‘Australian’ or ‘Australian made’ would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone is able to help can they please let me know and I can provide more details. I can also arrange an official ‘thankyou’ letter from AJSV to put up.

Thanks for your support
