The Possibilities of Online English Learning: The Case of Cocone

Shigenori TANAKA

Keio University

Abstract

Second language learning requires constant exposure to the target language. Classroom situations are, however, limited and often fail to give students opportunities to learn and use the language. They often fail to motivate students to learn enthusiastically and continuously. Modern information and communication technologies have bridged distance and time, and made it possible for people to learn anytime and any place. They have made it possible to show learning materials in an attractive, multimedia fashion—in the forms of text, animation, image, audio, and streaming video. Computer-supported collaborative learning has now been a promising innovation in the field of teaching and learning. The website “cocone.jp” is a prime example of using those technologies to create the space where people can learn and use English on a daily basis. To explore the possibilities of the computer and network devices in second language learning, we will have a look at the world of Cocone.
