Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment and can cause

serious adverse health effects in those who are exposed to

it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

has declared January as National Radon Action Month. This is an effort to raise radon awareness in both home

and business owners. Radon in the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among non-smokers in America and

claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. In fact, the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all

Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon.

Here are some things you can do to minimize or even eliminate your risk during National Radon Action Month:

1. TEST Your Home. The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes in the U.S. be tested for radon. Testing is easy and inexpensive. Contact your local home inspector/203k consultant for a radon test.

2. ATTEND a National Radon Action Month Event in your area. Look for radon events in your local communities.

3. SPREAD the Word. Talk to your family and friends about the health risk of radon and encourage them to get their homes tested.
