Sermon Notes:

Jesus says: If you know you’ve hurt somebody—if you owe them some way—then put your worship—your singing, your praying, your offerings--on pause.

Excuse #1 “ It’s not THAT important.”

Excuse #2 is “It’s really no big deal"

Excuse #3 “It can wait until tomorrow

If you’re in worship and you remember that you’ve done something to harm someone, immediately go and do your best to be reconciled with them.   Jesus says: don’t wait until it’s convenient.  Don’t wait until the most opportune time for you.  Do it right now.

WELCOMEWelcome to Sunday Worship at Cedar Hill CRC. We are glad you are here with us

this morning. If you are a visitor, please see the back of the bulletin for information about our church. Please fill out a Visitor Card found in the pew and place it in the offering plate or leave it at the Welcome Center.

WORSHIP HIGHLIGHTSAugust 25~9:30 A.M.: How important is it to “let it go” when it comes to our angry

grudges? Jesus highlights the vitality of dealing with our resentments before they destroy us.6 P.M.: Joint worship with our sister churches at Covenant CRC.

September 1~9:30 A.M.: Pastor Chris will give a message on I Peter 4:7~11, “The Clear Minded Community.” In this passage, we are reminded what a church with a clear mindedness looks like in practice. The very heart of this is utilizing our gifts on behalf of those around us. It is a passage that is both encouraging and challenging as we are reminded that we are not our own, but we belong to the body of Jesus Christ.6 P.M.: Joint worship with our sister churches at Midland Park CRC.

Pray for Mission Outreach

ACROSS THE SEA – ACROSS THE STREETLocal Church Plants – Home Missions – World Missions

Classis Hudson & Hackensack Church Plants: This week, we pray for Open Door Fellowship of East Harlem, New York, and Pastor Johnny Acevedo. Also, pray for City Grace Church of New York City and Pastor Ben Spalink.

City Grace Church: Pastor Ben Spalink asks for prayer for the leaders of City Grace as they discern God’s leading in the area of outreach and service. Also, for the transition to a volunteer-run worship team--a volunteer has stepped up to help with coordinating and four worship teams are in place. Pray that this will continue to go well.

Super Storm Sandy Relief: Do you have the desire to do local mission work but don’t know where to start? Have you thought that you would like to help those still suffering after super storm sandy? Covenant CRC sent 12 representatives to the Union Beach area during the week of July 8 and saw firsthand the widespread devastation from the storm. These people need our help. We are planning to send a team down monthly on Saturday, September 7 to work in that area. You do not need to be a trained professional, just willing to serve. If you are interested, contact JuleAnn Martin at [email protected] or call 973-427-3138.

Sea to Sea 2013: For more information about the tour, to keep current on their location and/or blogs, or to make a donation, go to www.seatosea.org.

Called to be a Missionary? Christian Reformed World Missions has two open career missionary positions. One is for a Transformation Network Developer in Mexico City, Mexico. The other is for a Media Developer in West Africa. For more info, visit www.crwm.org/serve.

PRAYER LINES ~ Call 201-652-4277, ext. 2, to hear the prayer line, which is updated each Friday afternoon with the latest on our congregational needs. You can also to check our denominational prayer requests: 888-CRC-PRAY or www.crcna.org/pray.

CULTURE OF PRAYER

The Lord of the Storm

Matthew 14:22-36“Then Peter got down out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!””

The disciples went out to sea while Jesus went to the hills to pray. That night a strong wind blew waves against the boat. The disciples’ fears grew when they saw “a ghost” walking toward them on the water. Then they recognized Jesus’ voice above the storm. “Take courage! Don’t be afraid.”

For the moment, Peter was filled with courage. Drawn by the comforting sound of Jesus’ words, he stepped out of the boat and unto the water. He even made it for a few steps as long as he kept his focus on Jesus rather than on the wind and waves.

This is exactly how we often find ourselves: facing troubles and fears, hearing the trustworthy call of Jesus, going to Him but faltering in our faith. Take heart, because when we are weak, He is strong. When we are sinking, He is reaching out His hand and catching us. When there is nothing in us that can save, His mighty arm is outstretched to us. Pulled under by sickness, unemployment, relationship conflict? Know that the Lord of the storm has you in His grip.

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.”

Isaiah 26:3

MY ANCHOR HOLDS

Tho’ the angry surges roll on my tempest driven soul,I am peaceful, for I know, wildly though the winds may blow,

I’ve an anchor safe and sure, That can evermore endure.

RefrainAnd it holds, my anchor holds; blow your wildest, then, O gale,

On my bark so small and frail: by His grace I shall not fail,For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.

It firmly holds.

Mighty tides about me sweep, perils lurk within the deep,Angry clouds o’er shade the sky, and the tempest rises high;

Still I stand the tempest’s shock, for my anchor grips the Rock.

I can feel the anchor fast as I meet each sudden blast,And the cable, though unseen, bears the heavy strain between;

Thro’ the storm I safely ride, till the turning of the tide.

Troubles almost ‘whelm the soul; griefs like billows o’r me roll;Tempters seek to lure astray; storms obscure the light of day:

But in Christ I can be bold, I’ve an anchor that shall hold.
