Family dog euthanized after attacking 16-day-old infantPitbull-Rottweiler mixed breed had history of complaints after attacking animalsDaniel PalmerNews staff

A 16-day-old Saanich infant is await-ing surgery with non-life-threatening injuries after a family dog mauled

her early Sunday morning, according to Saanich police.

The incident took place inside a home in the 4000 block of McLellan Road, just off Mckenzie near Glan-ford in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie.

The dog, a pitbull-Rottweiler mixed breed, was euthanized Sunday after-noon, Eassie confirmed.

“I can confirm that the animal had been the subject of complaints dat-

ing back several years for incidents involving other animals,” he added.

No incidents on file involved human attacks or injuries, Eassie said.

“The infant is scheduled for sur-gery but is in stable condition at this point,” he said.

At deadline, Saanich police officers were still contemplating charges for criminal negligence, but the investi-gation is ongoing, Eassie said.

Kitchen scraps bannow in effect at Hartland

A full ban on kitchen scraps is now in effect at Hartland landfill, which means Saanich munici-pal workers and private company haulers will be fined heavily if organic waste is discovered in dumped waste.

In April 2012, the Capital Regional District board voted to implement a region-wide kitchen scraps strategy. Kitchen scraps include meat, bones, grains, dairy products, eggs, vegetables, fruits and soiled paper products.

While Saanich was one of the first municipali-ties to roll out the blue box recycling program, which started in Gordon Head in 1989, it was one of the slowest to deviate organic waste from its garbage, starting in early 2014.

Current recycling and composting programs divert 46 per cent of the waste stream from Hartland. The belief is that organic materials, such as kitchen scraps, still remove an addi-tional 30 per cent of waste at Hartland. But the issue of where to process all that organic waste is still in disarray. The CRD is now in the pro-cess of sourcing a contract for a kitchen scraps processing facility in, or within proximity of, the Capital Region.

No site has yet been selected, but the con-struction completion date of a processing facil-ity could take up to two years. Until that time, kitchen scraps will continue to be trucked up-Island and barged to the Lower Mainland.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder

Why is heart attack the number one killer in this

country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to athero-sclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiolo-gists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy colla-gen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Welling-ton University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.

I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens ir-refutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

Triathletes in Australia ahead of 2015 seasonTravis PatersonNews staff

Despite enjoying a breakthrough period of consistency that he hasn’t enjoyed for almost two years, Matt Sharpe, 23, is once again looking to crack the national triathlon team.

In early December Sharpe, of Saanich, lost his Triathlon Canada team status. It’s a blow, as he is without the athletic funding necessary to train full time, but it wasn’t exactly a surprise, says Sharpe. It’s cer-tainly not enough to keep him from chasing his dream of competing at the Olympics, as he’s well prepped for the 2015 season.

“I didn't have much of an opportunity to perform (this year) and there were a limited number of (team spots) so the math just didn't work, which is understandable. In the past I've shown success when I can train fairly consistent and I'm currently having a breakthrough period of consistency that I haven't seen in almost two years. There are good signs.”

Sharpe does have an opportunity to receive the funding again if he can perform well in early season races in February and March, which he’s confident he can. He’s in a training group alongside 2014 Common-wealth Games triathletes Victoria-based Ellen Pennock and Sarah-Anne Brault, among others, under the guidance of coach Jamie Turner, the highly praised New Zea-lander that Triathlon Canada brought in last year.

“It would be foolish for me to just give up on (the sport) now … with the invest-ments I made last year and the proximity to the Olympics,” Sharpe says. “For the time being, family will help me continue to train.”

This week, the group is leaving the warm waters of Crystal Pool for the warm air of Wollongong, Australia, where coach Turner was previously based. They’ll actually meet up with a fellow group of Turner’s athletes called the Wollongong Wizards, a designa-tion the athletes quietly rock here in Vic-toria.

“Australia is something we’re excited about, meeting up with people on the same plan,” says Sharpe, who’s spent Canada’s colder months in Spain the past two sea-sons.

The upcoming stint Down Under will make or break not only Sharpe’s season but Pennock’s and Brault’s too, as all three are at a turning point in their careers.

Pennock, 22, and Brault, 25, have goals of their own, as both are looking to improve despite being unable to finish the Com-

monwealth triathlon (one third of starters didn’t) where Saanich’s Kirsten Sweetland won silver. (Sweetland is also headed to Australia in January, though she’ll be based in Noosa. She’ll continue her online coach-ing with Shaun Stephens, the Aussie who also coaches Team Sky, the UCI pro cycling team which boasts Tour de France winners Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins.)

Triathlon is like that. There are too many variables to worry about winning every race, though there are the obvious stand-outs, such as Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

For Pennock, 2015 is all about the Grand Final in Chicago, her final year in the under-23 category. The former UVic Vikes cross country runner came to Saanich from Cal-gary and won 2011 CIS rookie of the year. Her departure from school to focus on tri-athlon was going well until she broke her

collar bone at the Commonwealth Games in July.

“I wasn’t recovered enough to train until October,” Pennock said. “Initially it was only two weeks until I was walking. There was too much pain, I just walked for a good five weeks.”

Pennock was hoping to race in the open elite category this year but because of the setback, she’s focused on the U23 level for now.

When she started swimming a little over two months ago, it was with a one-arm side stroke.

“It will take time to gain the strength back in the pool but I expect to be on track,” Pen-nock says.

For Pennock’s Fairfield roomate Brault, originally out of Quebec City, there is an expectation to compete at the 2015 Rio de

Janeiro Test Event, Aug. 1- 2. It’s an Olympic qualification, but not the only chance to qualify for the 2016 Rio Games.

“Triathlon Canada will look at all your races, but you know the Rio Test Event is likely the Olympic race course so that’s very inviting,” Brault said. “But really, quali-fying goes until 2016.”

The key thing is showing you’re capable, says Sharpe, who had hoped for more in 2014 but instead experienced a year of inju-ries and setbacks. It kept him from repeat-ing his promising campaign from 2012 when, as a 21-year-old, he earned top-10 finishes in the open category of the Interna-tional Triathlon Union, though he was a U23 level competitor.

“It’s consistency. You can’t drop off,” says Sharpe.

Sarah-Anne Brault, Matt Sharpe and Ellen Pennock show their Ws as members of the Wollongong Wizards. The group of triathletes is headed by Triathlon Canada coach Jamie Turner, who will guide them into the 2015 season, starting with a January training block in Wollongong, Australia.

While research is still in the early stages, some women with the most severe cases of mitochon-drial disease can potentially have children without passing on their genetic mutations.

“Since the mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, they’re super important for the tis-sue that has high energy uses, so the brain or the muscles,” Turner said. “When there’s a defect in the mitochondria, it makes you sick because you don’t have enough energy getting to certain places in your body.”

The disease may be less familiar among physi-cians who graduated before the mid-1980s, when

medical genetics became standard learning in medical training.

But Choy and others continue to offer advanced genetic testing for those suffering from mitochon-drial disease with the goal of developing better treatment and prevention methods.

“Certain vitamin therapies have been shown to improve the symptoms, but it’s so hard to predict how a specific patient is going to react. It’s really an individual disease,” Turner said.

Knox, who gets by thanks to solid disability insurance from her former employer, is now put-ting what energy she has towards the Mito Quilts of Hope project, which raises awareness by send-ing handmade quilts to others with mitochondrial disease.

“In Canada, I’ve got about 30 requests for quilts,” Knox said. “In the U.S., I’ve got over 100 requests. I’ve already sent out about 20 quilts, which take anywhere from three to six months to make depending on the complexity of design.”

Knox is looking for quilting volunteers to help her fill those back orders. She’s also teamed up with local filmmaker Brian Barnard to produce a film about mitochondrial disease and her own journey.

“Relatively speaking, I’ve lived a very full life,” she said. “This is what I can do now to make a dif-ference with the talents I still have.”

For more information on mitochondrial disease, visit mitocanada.org. For more information or to donate to Barnard’s film, search “Mito awareness project” on Indiegogo.com.

Gingerbread Showcase at Laurel Point Inn to Sunday

Now, that’s sweet. For the sixth con-

secutive year, the Inn at Laurel Point is home to Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase featuring more than 25 works of 100 per cent edible art by profes-sional and home bakers from across the coun-try.

The annual fundrais-ing event puts these scrumptious creations on display where they will go head-to-head, all in the name of raising funds for Habitat For Humanity Victoria, who are currently building a four-unit townhouse at 4000 Cedar Hill Cross Rd. in Saanich.

This year’s theme focuses on Where Things Live, allow-ing participants to let their imaginations run wild as they dream up homes for snails, Ewoks, and even a little boy’s imagination.

Both the professional and home baker cre-ations were judged and awarded top prizes by a panel of judges.

However, members of the public have the ultimate power by picking the winner of the highest category, People’s Choice, by exchanging a donation to Habitat for Humanity Victoria for a vote.

Ballots and donation boxes are located at the hotel’s front desk and lobby display area (voting for the People’s Choice award closes on Sunday (Jan. 4).

In 2013, the event

resulted in a record donation of more than $21,500 to Habitat for Humanity Victoria, a $5,000 increase over 2012. All funds went towards supporting the building of new homes for lower-income fami-lies living in the Capital Region.

Habitat for Humanity Victoria currently has nine units in Saanich. With the latest addition in Cedar Hill, there will be 13.

The homes are built

half by volunteers and half with paid labour, along with half of the funds being donated by people in the commu-nity.

Before the families can move in, each are required to perform 500 hours of “sweat equity,” in which they participate in the build-ing of their new home.

This year’s ginger-bread entries are on display at Inn at Lau-

rel Point until Jan. 4, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Judge’s picks for the 2014 Gingerbread Showcase:

n Professional: First – Anne-Marie Fortin, Vic-toria Residential Build-ers Association, It’s All in Your Head; Second – Alicia Campbell, Whit-ney Lee, & April Iver-son, Inn at Laurel Point, The Forest Floor; Third – Helen Siemens, Sid-

ney Pier Hotel & Spa, Vacationing at the Pier.

n Home baker: Tie for 1st – Jennifer Dumont, Life in the Shire and Lulu Sanchez-Laurel, Oh, My Cats!

Second – Crystal Smith and Kaprieli Vataiki, Cloverdale Out of School Care, Christ-mas on Endor.

Third – Tanya Martin, Habitat for Humanity Victoria, Fairy House.

“Certain vitamin therapies have been shown to improve the symptoms. but it’s so hard to predict how a specific patient is going to react.

Re: Mayor, council clash over top bureaucrat’s $476,000 departure, News (Dec. 19)

Why is Mayor Atwell the focus of criticism over the costly $476,611 severance package for the termination of Saanich’s Chief Administrative Officer, when he played no part in this generous package? Why is the criticism not focussing on those responsible for the overly generous compensation and severance awarded to a CAO with no previous track-record or experience.

Moreover, do we have any evidence the CAO was doing a stellar job or, would be willing and able to strive to fulfil the campaign promises of good governance, transparency, accountability made not only by candidate Atwell, but also, heard at the all-candidates meetings from just every candidate? It is inappropriate to discuss such details in public, so it is unlikely we will ever know the true reason

for the CAO’s departure. In the long-run, will the

departure of the CAO be good for Saanich? Only time will tell. But what we do know is Mayor Atwell was not responsible for the cost of the severance package.

Bob FurberSaanich

Former CAO’s payouttoo rich a contract

I completely agree with Mayor Richard Atwell’s decision to ask for the CAO’s resignation.

I think it is important to be able to work with someone new in this position who is not a leftover

from the previous regime. It is always interesting to learn

(in the process) about these sweetheart deals with which these managers are able to leave.

I find a $476,000 severance for a CAO of a municipality way too rich.

I hope Mayor Atwell can negotiate more reasonable contracts with future managers.

I, for one, welcome the new mayor’s fresh ideas. I think Atwell will be far more responsible with taxpayers’ money than the former mayor as seen here with this ridiculous severance package.

The plummeting price of oil may have a big impact on the Canadian and B.C. economies in the next year or two.

Some of that will be positive, but it is likely that it will be mainly negative.

The price of gasoline (but not diesel fuel) is falling, and that means more money in the pockets of consumers.

This helps us meet other obligations such as rent, credit card bills and onerous child care costs.

If the provincial and regional governments can avoid the temptation to tax this newly found money out of people’s pockets, the fall in prices will likely do more good than harm.

Two bright spots may be a boost in exports if the Canadian dollar remains low, and a much-needed soul searching of the full-steam-ahead approach to oilsands development.

But the negative implications are widespread. There will almost certainly be a fall in economic activity, and particularly job creation.

Many well-paying jobs are concentrated in the oilsands and there are Greater Victoria residents who either work there or work for companies that exploit or supply the oilsands.

There will be no new construction projects in that area, as long as oil prices stay at the $60 to $70 per barrel level. It simply costs too much to produce oil to justify unnecessary expansion during periods like this.

As economic activity is reduced, it impacts taxation to the federal and provincial governments. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and B.C. all are dependent on revenue from oil and natural gas. In B.C., at least one LNG project has been delayed by the falling price of oil, as Asian natural gas prices are tied to oil prices.

More projects could be delayed or even cancelled. It is significant that none of the major LNG players are ready to commit. A fall in economic activity likely means that 2015 will see much lower growth than anticipated, which won’t help the overall Canadian economy.

After the tragic sinking of the Valencia in January 1906 and the loss of 136 souls, the Canadian government decided that something must be done about the ever-mounting death toll of the area known as the Graveyard of the Pacific.

This patch of stormy water extends from the north of Oregon up to and including the west coast of Vancouver Island.

It is hard to know exactly how many ships have been lost to its frigid depths, but estimates for the number of wrecks along the coast of Vancouver Island alone hover in the region of 475.

One of the most brutal parts of the graveyard is at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca along Vancouver Island’s southwest coast, between Bamfield and Port Renfrew. This was the exact, inaccessible coastline where the Valencia had met her doom.

Survivors who made it to shore after the ship was wrecked on a reef during a storm faced sheer, 30-metre cliffs which they had to climb, shivering and soaked, only to find themselves in a dense forest, alone with the howling winds and unseen predators.

There was a rickety telegraph line that cut through the dense temperate rainforest, and this they followed until they found a small linesman’s shack where they finally were able to communicate with the Carmanah Lighthouse Station to get help.

The rescue ships that eventually arrived could do little when they approached from the water lest they too be wrecked, and the area was so remote that it was impossible to approach quickly by land.

The intense tragedy and human drama of the story

hit headlines across North America and prompted a public outcry to ameliorate the situation.

Vancouver Island was still remote and wild, yet there was a busy shipping corridor through the Strait of Juan de Fuca which brought hundreds of boats into the busy harbours of Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle.

In response, the Canadian government conceived the “Dominion Life-Saving Trail” which is known as the West Coast Trail today. They embarked on a two-year plan to upgrade the rickety line of telegraph wires into a life-saving system.

Along this 74-kilometre

route between Bamfield and Port Renfrew they first built the Pachena Point Lighthouse in 1908 to warn ships that approached too close to the jagged reefs along the coastline.

Then, the narrow path had been cleared for the telegraph lines was widened and made more accessible for rescuers and survivors alike.

Signposts were added to help survivors determine just where they were. Small shacks were also constructed at eight-kilometre intervals along the trail and equipped with multi-lingual maps and directions for navigating the trail, rations, blankets and the basics for survival.

The Bamfield Lifeboat Station was also built and equipped with a state-of-the-art 36-foot motorized lifeboat. It was the height of modernity when it was commissioned in 1908, and hundreds of these boats came to be used in coastal communities across North America.

By the 1950s, the Dominion Lifesaving Trail had fallen into disrepair. The first half of the 20th century had brought some

rapid changes in technology which led to a corresponding decrease in the number of shipwrecks along Vancouver Island.

Radar came into common use in the late 1930s, and during the course of the Second World War the U.S. perfected the Long Range Navigation System (Loran), which uses pulsed radio transmissions between ‘master’ and ‘slave’ stations to form hyperbola (called loran lines) which intersect to show the position of the ship.

Then, of course, in the 1970s the global positioning system began to supersede other navigational systems. Though there are still ships and souls

lost in the area, today the number is minimal.

The last major shipwreck along the West Coast Trail was of the Russian tanker Uzbekistan in 1943. Though the ship was destroyed, all souls aboard the vessel were saved.

Today, hikers regularly encounter the remnants of the many lost ships which litter the shore along the trail. Boilers, anchors, boxes, splintered bits of decking, even pieces of steam funnels protrude from the sea or lie

abandoned on the sand. This wreckage is protected

by law; it is illegal for anyone to remove the debris of ship wrecked more than two years ago.

In 1973 the West Coast Trail became part of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and was upgraded.

Today it is used for recreational hiking and camping, though anyone who has travelled its length will testify that it is still a treacherous route. Approximately two per cent of those who attempt the trail will require emergency rescue services to get them out.

It is consistently rated as one of the finest hikes in the world, but the West Coast Trail remains a visible testament to the powerful hand of Vancouver Island’s natural forces and to the lives lost to, and saved from, its unrelenting grip.

Ask the President - Tim Ayres,Victoria Real Estate Board President

Why would I hire a REALTOR®? Can’t I just sell my own home?

You can legally sell your own home, cut your own hair and write your own pre nuptial agreement, but most people choose to turn to the experts in those services to get things done right. Selling a home may seem simple from the outside, you list the home online, people call to look at the house, and within a month, you’re finished the deal with cash in hand...right? That’s the very high level view, and there are a hundred little details hidden within required to close a deal safely and securely.

Remember, selling or buying a home is one of the largest financial decisions you’ll make. It pays to have an expert in your corner to protect your interests and manage the details. Talk to a REALTOR® about what they can do to help sell your home.

Whatever your needs are, a REALTOR® can help.

Milo, our 15lb terrier cross, has become the patriarch of our family over the past three years and occupies a huge part of my heart. He has been the namesake for one of my furniture design collections, the inspiration for many neutral colour palettes, and has had two guest appearances on my TV show Trend (which airs weekly on Chek.) Pet lovers can relate to my adoration for this little guy when I speak of the warmth and compassion that our furry friend brings into our home. However, I am sure that you can also relate to some of my frustrations when making the home pet friendly, while maintaining a lovely looking space. Copious amounts of hair or fur, scratching of your furniture and the occasional accident on your favorite area rug are just few challenges that may present themselves. On the other hand, with a little extra planning you can make your coexistence much easier. While each pet is a little different in their needs and requirements, here are some tricks that have worked for our family.

One suggestion is to choose materials for your furniture that are extremely durable and compliment your pet’s hair colour. I am extremely lucky that Milo fi ts into my obsession with all shades of grey (purely by coincidence). I have chosen furniture that is within the grey tones and in fabrics of ultra suede and leatherette for the main pieces. While leather is also a very durable option, I found that leatherette was a better option for us. They exceed up to a 500,000 double rub count, making them less likely to puncture

from little claws and can be wiped down with mild soap and water (no leather conditioning or special cleaners required.)

Having hard surface fl oors, with good quality area rugs has been a blessing for our pet friendly home. While we realize that investing in an expensive area rug at this point isn’t practical for us, having the option to take a mid-range, good quality rug out of the house to have it professionally cleaned or replaced if it is unsalvagable is a more economical option than replacing wall to wall carpeting throughout the entire home. If you have a large dog that will mark softer hardwoods with their claws, a durable luxury vinyl plank, tile or laminate fl oor may be the best option for you.

One project I embarked on was the dog bathing station that I set up in our laundry room. Of course I was inspired by one of the many ideas found on pinterest. Milo is fairly small, and doesn’t need a lot of elaborate features. I installed a faucet with a hose attachment, deep laundry tub and shelves with many small baskets for organizing the tools needed to get the little guy spick- and-span after a long hike or walk.

Microbiologist opens latest micro brewery Travis Paterson News staff

It was a merry start to Christmas for Greater Victoria beer lovers as B.C.’s newest craft brewery, Cate-gory 12 Brewing, opened on Dec. 17 at 2200 Keating Cross Rd.

The first and only modern brew-ery in Central Saanich boasts a tast-ing room where craft beer enthusi-asts can refill (or purchase) two litre growlers with fresh beer and 650 mL bottles.

It opened with such appeal that on-site fill-ups are currently unavail-able until mid-January, though a handful of local pubs and restau-rants are well stocked for the new year.

Category 12 was long in the mak-ing, founded by microbiologist Michael Kuzyk, who’s spent years tinkering with the science of beer at home with his partner Karen.

“I started home brewing during grad studies first as a necessity, but it quickly became a passion of mine. I wanted to turn my passion into my full time occupation so I could really explore the creativity of industrial fermentation and, most importantly, share it with others,” Michael said.

Until Category 12 came to frution, Michael, a PhD in microbiology and

biochemistry from the University of Victoria, had been practising as a professional scientist.

The brewery is launching with a saison (wheat style) and a Black India Pale Ale, with a pale ale soon to come.

The brewery’s focus will be on Bel-gian influenced beers and the cur-rent trend of Pacific Northwest style beers. Two additional seasonals will be available throughout the year.

“We wanted to make it clear that we are here to make creative styles and experiment. We have to stand out in a competitive market. I think craft beer fans will immediately understand what we are trying to accomplish when they taste our first two beers,” Michael said.

The Keating industrial area is a fitting location as hops were once a staple crop of the North and Central Saanich farming communities a cen-tury ago.

To try a Category 12 beer, head to The Beagle Pub, Garricks Head Pub, The Churchill, The Drake Eat-ery, Pizzeria Prima Strada , The Moon Under Water Brewery & Pub, Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub or find bottles at many private liquor stores around town For more information visit category12beer.com.

As the final stretch of the Van-couver Island Junior Hockey League season nears, it’s a great time to reflect on the paths of ex-Saanich Braves.

A great many VIJHL players used the league as a developmen-tal stepping stone to the next level of their hockey careers, be it at the Junior A and major junior level, college and university, or pro.

The most notable example at the moment being Matt Irwin of the San Jose Sharks and Adam Cracknell of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who both donned the red, white and black of the Saan-ich Braves.

The VIJHL has gained a great reputation over the past 10 years as a superb developmental league for players and in that regard, the Braves are one of the top teams

in the league at moving players to the next level.

This is thanks to co-owner/GM Norm Kelly and head coach Brad Cook, who take a proactive approach to use their connections in the hockey community to find players who will fit the Braves’ mandate.

Cook is known for his dedica-tion to development and the sacri-ficesneeded to win at the Jr. B level, having long ago said, “While win-ning championships is nice and what both players and coaches compete for. But I'd rather coach 10 years in this league and not win any (if it meant) I moved five or six players per year on to the next level. I would be satisfied with that kind of program success.

“When you have that success of moving guys on to the next level, ultimately that's what we are here for. We are a stepping stone and a development league through and through and that's what I try and live by. I will never hold a kid back, I want kids to be gone.”

However, it’s a perpetual dou-ble-edged sword as moving a player up usually means you lose a quality player from the cur-rent roster. Witness the case of Braves forward Nick Guerra, who

both last year and this year, split time between the Braves and the Junior A Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL and who recently departed the Braves as the team’s leading scorer to play full-time with the Clippers.

And Guerra’s not the only Brave on this year's roster to have spent time at the Junior A level, including Hunter Atchison (Trail Smoke Eaters) and Connor B i r m i n g h a m ( C h i l l i w a c k Chiefs). In fact, Seamus Magu-ire recently returned to the Braves after spending all of last season and the first part of this season with the Junior A Flin Flon Bombers in the Sas-katchewan Junior Hockey League.

As to former Braves enjoying success at the next level, one need not look too far back to see a long list of Braves now playing at the Junior A or college level.

Jake Daughtry (2013-2014) is now seeing regular ice time at the University of Central Oklahoma, and is skating along fellow Braves alumni Chad Roorda (2011-2013), Trevor Yee (2008-2010) and Gaven

Hohl (2009-2010). The 2012-2013 season was a

particularly strong class of gradu-ating Braves. Leading the charge was 2012-2013 captain and for-mer VIJHL MVP Ty Jones, who is now at the University of Okla-homa. Sam Johnston and Justin

Polischuck are in their second year with the Adrian Col-lege Bulldogs (Michi-gan) in the American Col-

legiate Hockey Associa-tion (ACHA). Defence-man Brandon Parmar - older brother of cur-

rent Braves forward Jordan - played a season for the Uni-versity of Victoria in the B.C. Intercol-

legiate Hockey Association. Cole Golka went on to play Junior A with the LaRonge Ice Wolves (SJHL) and is now leading scorer with the Junior A Dryden Ice Dogs in Ontario’s Superior International Junior Hockey League.

Locally, Shawn McBride and Kevin Massy are key members of the Victoria Grizzlies in the BCHL, looking to secure college scholar-ships down the road.

McBride is also captain of this year's Grizzlies squad.

Speaking of local, post-VIJHL life has been good for Braves gradu-ates Jack Palmer and Wade Mur-phy. Palmer, who finished second to Jones in team scoring in 2011-2012 (and won the VIJHL Rookie of the Year award) went on to play two seasons for the Bran-don Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL) before being traded to the Victoria Roy-als where he is a dependable cen-tre.

Murphy, who patrolled the ice at Pearkes arena in 2009-2010, went on to play for the Victoria Grizzlies and Penticton Vees in the BCHL, winning the RBC Jr. A national championship, and now skates for the storied University of North Dakota in the NCAA. In 2013, Murphy was selected 185th overall by the Nashville Predators in the NHL Entry Draft.

The Braves were back in action last night (past press time) against the Peninsula Panthers and are at home to the Nanaimo Clippers today, Jan. 2, with a 6:30 p.m. start at Pearkes Arena.

Biggest trend in home lighting is LED, says local expert

Don DentonBlack Press

LED lights are leading the way in home lighting trends.

“The biggest trend in home light-ing is LEDs. Everyone wants LEDs,” says Mike McDougall, a certified lighting consultant with McLaren Lighting.

Existing styles of bulbs from halo-gen to flourescent are still in use, but LED lights are longer lasting and more efficient to use.

The last of the incandescent light bulbs, the 40- and 60-watt versions, join the 100-watt bulb in being legis-lated out of existence as of Dec. 31.

LED lights are still the most expen-sive lighting product, but McDougall points out that ”because the price has continued to come down more people are using them.”

LED lights are being incorporated into all styles of light fixtures from desk lamps to chandeliers.

“Victoria is a diverse community for lighting,” says McDougall. “It is very modern but has a strong base for traditional and industrial styles of lighting.

“Craftsman style is also a favou-rite but that is currently morphing into more of a West Coast contem-porary look.”

McLaren Lighting always has clas-sic Tiffany-style lamps in stock as well. McDougall says that “Tiffany style is a small market but one that is always there.”

When asked what customers should keep in mind when purchas-ing lighting for their home, McDou-gall suggests that “living space needs to be lit for the task at hand.”

He reminds buyers that areas such as workspaces need brighter light and to consider that when designing a residence or retro-fitting current lights.

He also suggest that multiple light switches and dimmers are becom-ing a thing of the past. New one-stop key pads give you the ability to control all your lights on one panel and allow you to create preset light-ing conditions for different times of your day.

“You can push one button and have all your lighting change,” he says.

McDougall recommends using experienced staff from a lighting store when purchasing lighting products.

“We’ve done the research and worked with the items in stock,” he says. “We want to be sure the homeowner has the right product for their needs.”
