First responders roll up their sleeves for blood servicesDan EbenalNews Staff
Saanich’s first responders know what it’s like to be relied upon by the community in times of crisis. Last week four of Saanich’s finest rolled up their sleeves to once again respond to the community’s need.
It may not technically be a crisis, but there is always a critical need for blood in Greater Victoria and around the province. To answer that call, members of the Saanich police and fire departments stopped by Canadian Blood Services to donate their blood.
“We are forever counting on that people have donated blood and now we want to support that ourselves. We see on a daily basis how much it’s needed,” said Const. Dani Frohloff with Saanich Police.
“I actually have a dual purpose here today because it’s Random Acts of Kindness Day. Number 65 on the list is donating blood, so we’re doing both today.”
Capt. Jerry Tomljenovic with Saanich Fire said donating blood is one of the most important gifts you can give to not only improve health but save lives.
“Day in and day out, we see the effects of what trauma can do and the benefits of having a steady supply of blood. It’s a very efficient process and a
very worthwhile cause,” said Tomljenovic.
The firefighters and police officers stopped by Canadian Blood Services at the culmination
of their Sirens For Life campaign. During the campaign, blood donors are given the opportunity to say thanks to first responders for the important work they do.
“We’ve created a wall of thanks. It’s just message from donors to say thank you to our first responders,” said Ann Chabert, territory manager with Canadian Blood Services.
Canadian Blood Services needs about 170,000 additional donors per year to maintain the national blood supply.
“The need for blood is the same in every community. The need is every day, we need donors every day,” said Chabert.
It can take up to 50 donors to help a single motor vehicle accident victim. And while about half of all Canadians are eligible to give blood, last year only one in 60 eligible donors made a commitment to give.
Sgt. Steve Eassie said first responders know the life-saving impact blood donations can have and are happy to answer the call to raise awareness. “It’s a reminder to us as well that if we’re able to we should be coming in to donate blood,” he said.
Blood donations can be made at Canadian Blood Services (3449 Saanich Rd.) Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every other Saturday (next on Nov. 21) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Environmentalist critical of ALR’s policy for tree removalTravis Paterson News Staff
The incentives to remove trees from the Agricultural Land Reserves are counterintuitive to climate change and need to be revisited, says a local champion of sustainability.
Director Adam Taylor of Habitat Acquisition Trust, which documented the loss of 300 hectares of Saanich tree canopy from 2006 to 2011, says ALR rules overlook the importance of trees and natural areas.
“There needs to be incentives within the ALR to preserve tree cover, in addition to the incentives in the ALR to remove it,” Taylor said. “As long as trees remain, they’re paying higher taxes.”
The news of 4,900 trees coming down from Allen Vandekerkove’s Saanich ALR property – 12 hectares – along Watkiss Way spurred many responses this week, such as Taylor’s.
The way the ALR rules are now, if a herd of sheep is on two hectares and the other 15 hectares of that ALR farm is forest land, the farmer is encouraged to clear cut the
trees to qualify for the reduced farm tax rate on all 17 hectares, Taylor added.
“That’s a broken system. In terms of climate change, trees are carbon sponges and it’s going to take 60 to 100 years to replace those trees as the effective carbon sponges that they are now.”
The Vandekerkhove property is not going to have a global impact, but it will have a regional one, according to Taylor, who isn’t commenting on Vandekerkhove’s decision.
“In general, [HAT’s] concern with the ALR is it’s not just protecting farm land
but encouraging natural areas transition into farmland for no particular agricultural reason,” said Taylor.
“When you lose a big chunk of trees that’s a large amount of natural water retention gone.”
The natural wetland neighbouring the Watkiss Way property will accrue a great amount more water, an issue that View Royal would then have to engineer a solution for.
“Certainly, the Agricultural Land Commission needs to recognize the value of tree cover.”

people are out in December.”
Last week, the committee revealed five options for the plant, including a one-plant option in Rock Bay, Victoria; a two-plant option with a centralized plant at Rock Bay and a facility in Colwood; a four-plant sub-regional option with facilities in Rock Bay, Esquimalt Nation, Colwood and East Saanich; and a seven-plant option with facilities in Langford, Colwood, View Royal, Esquimalt, Rock Bay and Saanich core and east Saanich; and an option that is tertiary.
The options were complied by the CRD’s consultant team and technical oversight panel. Cost information for each site will be available on Dec. 2.

the process, but they were following it.

The committee will make a decision on which option to choose on Jan. 27, 2016.

St. Margaret’s may have science labs, two gyms, a sports field and rooms for music and culinary arts, but on Saturday, the computer rooms were the place to be.
The private independent school hosted one of two local coding events as part of National Girls Learning Code Day, teaching young students and residents how to build and design their own websites. In Canada, 1,090 children and parents tried their hands at HTML and CSS, two coding languages used for developing content and stylistic features of websites.
“Here in Victoria, at St. Margaret’s and UVic together, we had almost 150,” said Christina Jones, Victoria co-ordinator of Girls Learning Code. “That’s a good percentage of the country.”
Grade 5 student Anjulie Djearam joined the workshop after her dad noticed a flyer for it on the bulletin board. She said her brother taught her a little about HTML and CSS, and she watched him make a website before the workshop.
“At first, it was kind of confusing to make all the different codes and to put the opening text to make a paragraph, but once you get
used to it, it’s really easy,” she said.
Similarly, Grade 2 student Natalie Beilin signed up with her sister, who had attended two other Girls Learning Code workshops and inspired her to try it herself.
“Mine was about cute animals and magical creatures – bunnies, pandas, dragons,” said Beilin.
HTML (hypertext markup language), in layman’s terms, is the skeletal structure of a website, while CSS (cascading style sheets) defines the stylistic qualities of a website, such as colours, fonts and backgrounds. The girls used Mozilla Thimble, a lightweight coding platform, to put together their sites.
The latest event is the fourth time the Girls Learning Code workshop has been held at St. Margaret’s. The workshop is run by Ladies Learning Code, a national not-for-profit offering beginner-friendly tech education.
Lauren Hudson, a program support teacher for the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, said the workshops have had a positive influence on students. She noted some girls recently asked the school to run another coding session on its certification day, which typically offers courses on such topics as babysitting, first aid and food safety.
“This year, the girls themselves brainstormed and they decided they wanted to offer a coding workshop,” said Hudson. “That’s separate from Girls Learning Code, but I think it’s because of the Girls Learning Code opportunities that the girls are being exposed to computer programming and they’re saying, ‘Hey, I like this.’
“That’s a really good indication that the learning is extending beyond just the events, which is fabulous.”
Jones said a follow-up survey found that 98 per cent of the attendees would take a coding course again, noting the course is a good introduction to technology for young girls.
“It’s a bit unique in the way it delivers the content,” said Jones. “Ladies Learning Code and Girls Learning Code is very social and collaborative – we try very hard to make sure the girls have somebody sitting close to them who can talk to them and walk them through stuff.”
Not only do the mentors provide help and guidance in building and designing websites, but Jones said they also serve as role models and show girls that they can have careers in technological fields.
“That’s the whole mandate behind Girls Learning Code, to normalize women in technology and to make it more accessible,” said Jones.

Re: editorial ‘Election changes won’t come easy’ in the Oct. 30 Saanich News.
No, the changes won’t come easy but change is long overdue, as most Canadians agree. We’ve just gone through an election where all parties but one pledged electoral reform and the election was the referendum. Now let’s hold them to their promises.
This won’t be an ‘arbitrary’ process. As stated, there must be an all party, parliamentary review, where our elected representatives can perhaps go back to working together for the country’s good, instead of their parties’ or their own interests. A citizen’s panel, including experts on electoral systems, needs to be an integral part of the process and all of us need do our part by becoming better informed. There will be lots of naysayers and those working for their own interests to block any changes, and we need all be aware of this reality
Our outdated electoral system worked well for a two-party election. However, we are an increasingly diverse country and the days of one party representing Canadians interests are past. We need proportional representation so that the outcomes of elections result in the number of MPs closely reflecting the proportion of voter support. This may mean the end of majority governments and will certainly demand at every level, more
co-operative and collaborative conduct from our elected representatives.
Currently, without changes, low voter turnout and many candidates on a ballot can result in the election of an MP who has a ridiculously small portion of voter support. Similarly, ‘majority’ governments form with nothing close to half the nation’s support. No system is perfect but ours is downright broken. It won’t be a simple or easy process but it must be undertaken and we need to start now. Let the conversation continue and let’s all make it a national one.

Park usage will only increaseThe ‘Baby Boomer’ park users will
continue to increase over the coming years as many of us are approaching retirement age. In addition, it seems a reasonable assumption that, together with the increasing number of young families within Gordon Head and surrounding districts, usage of Mount Douglas Park will intensify, including the Glendenning entrance.
As all our roads are public, not private property, I feel all the public has a right to appropriate access to the Glendenning entrance. We have the right to more parking space and certainly a road improvement for safety of all who use the entrance. This
includes cyclists, people who walk on the road, horses, dog walkers, people with medical and or mobility issues, aged pets, as well as families with babies or young children. There are currently three areas where cars need to pull off the side of this road to allow an approaching car to drive between large trees on both sides of the road.
I remain hopeful that a well-planned improvement will be initiated, not just a Band-Aid solution that does not address this important issue. Mt. Douglas Park, with a size of 188 hectares, is centrally located and must be accessible to all. It is inappropriate that a few people living on Glendenning Road insist that no changes be made to improve the safety to this park entrance and are attempting to curtail the many park users who have been using this entrance for years.

Canadian electoral reform is long overdue
It doesn’t take a hero to save a life
Being there when the community needs you is almost second nature to Saanich’s first responders. And the latest initiative backed by police and firefighters in Saanich is certain to provide comfort and security when residents need it most.
Members of Saanich Police and the local fire department were on hand at Canadian Blood Services’ Saanich location last week to roll up their sleeves and provide a shot in the arm for those facing a life-threatening emergency.
Giving blood is probably not the most heroic act performed by our first responders, but that doesn’t lessen the importance of the cause.
Canadian Blood Services needs about 170,000 additional donors per year to maintain the national blood supply. It can take up to 50 donors to help a single motor vehicle accident victim. And while about half of all Canadians are eligible to give blood, last year only one in 60 eligible donors made a commitment to give.
Close to 52 per cent of Canadians say they, or a family member, have needed blood or blood products for surgery or for medical treatment. While there is a need for all blood types, there is a specific need for O negative blood donors. When seconds count, someone’s life is on the line, and there’s no time to check for blood type, hospital patients receive O negative blood.
It’s not every day when the average citizen can have the same impact on the health and well-being of the community as those who work on the front lines as police and firefighters. But all it takes is a quick stop at a local blood clinic to become a hero in somebody’s life.
Canadian Blood Services is located at 3449 Saanich Rd. with clinic hours running Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every other Saturday (the next on Nov. 21) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

War monument unveiled at Broadmead lodgeJacob ZinnNews Staff
Just in time for Remembrance Day, the Lodge at Broadmead has recognized Canada’s veterans with a monument in honour of their service to the country.
On Tuesday, residents gathered to see a new marble monument at the entrance to the lodge, with a plaque reading, “Dedicated to Canada’s Veterans. Especially to those cared for at the lodge.”
“This is surely a most appropriate way to say ‘Thank you’ to our wonderful men and women who have in the past and continue today to serve this country in uniform,” said B.C. Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon.
“We are indeed commemorating numerous special anniversaries and some very exceptional people – 2015 marks many 70th anniversaries, including the liberation of the Netherlands [and] V-E Day.
“In addition, 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of this
wonderful facility, this caring home, Broadmead Lodge, where thousands of World War II and Korean War veterans, along with many fellow seniors, have spent their final years.”
Paul Morgan, chair of the board of directors at Broadmead Care, also announced the renaming of the lodge to the Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead.
Many veterans were also in attendance,
including former prisoner of war Rudi Hoenson and Maj. Murray Edwards, a Second World War and Korean War veteran who lives at the lodge.
Rear-Admiral Giles Couturier, Commander of the Maritime Forces Pacific, stressed the importance of recognizing the sacrifice that veterans have made for Canada.
“I’ve had the opportunity to talk to schools over my career and I did it again yesterday, and
I keep telling them that we have a debt to our veterans,” he said. “The debt is a small way for us to remember what you have given to us.”
Edwards closed the speeches, summing up the timely unveiling of the monument the day before Nov. 11.
“Remembrance Day, for many of us, is a time of rather sober reflection, and we, our families and friends, as we view this monument, we will never forget,” he said.

A work party of 30 people showed up in the rain on Saturday to distribute two truckloads of gravel along a rebuilt foot path in the Quadra-Maplewood neighbourhood.
For 44 years a path connected the cul-de-sac ends of Duke Street and Bridgeport Place. It was frequented by local area residents for access to Maplewood Avenue and Cedar Hill Golf Course walking trails on the east side, and to access Playfair Park and Quadra Street on the other side.
However, in 2013 the trail’s life ended abruptly when new owners took over a property on Bridgeport and complained vigorously about the trail trespassing across their lot.
“And rightly so,” said Quadra-Cedar Hill Community Association president John Schmuck. “When the subdivisions on Duke and Bridgeport were built around 1971 Saanich tried to connect them back then, but whoever did it didn’t do the proper process. For whatever reason, the residents never complained.”
Schmuck supports the new owner’s right to remove the foot path from their property.
Fortunately, a Saanich right-of-way does exist between the two streets. It wasn’t being followed, likely because of the rugged terrain.
Quadra-Cedar Hill Community Association lobbied with a letter to mayor and council supported by more than 100 signatures to call for a path improvement. And Saanich responded, Schumck said.
“Credit Saanich. We’re really pleased with Saanich engineering, they get a lot of praise.”
Schmuck said the path has served as an alternative route for youth and adults alike. It’s a safe option for people looking to avoid the winding, narrow and traffic-heavy stretch of Tattersall Drive and to reach bus routes and schools on Quadra Street.
To create the new route Saanich assembled a rock wall path on which the work party
smoothed out several yards of gravel.Resident Tom Russell is highly impressed.“Saanich came through here, they put a great
path in and we couldn’t be happier.”All that’s left is a staircase that Saanich will
soon install on the Bridgeport end of the path. To gather residents the Quadra Cedar Hill
association delivered handbills to each house in the neighbourhood explaining the project and asking for help.
“It was a community builder,” Schmuck said. “We were out there shovelling gravel in the rain. There were so many wheelbarrows we had to put a few away because we were running into each other.”

A story in the Nov. 11 Saanich News stated that two of the 13 spots on the committee for governance review are reserved for members of the Saanich Community Association Network.
The 13 spots will be made up of community members selected from the applications received. No spots have been reserved for members of the Saanich Community Association Network or any other organization or association.

Now that Halloween’s over, expect to see more red and green everywhere you go – including the famously blue Best Buy at Uptown.
The countdown to Christmas is on, and the electronics retailer is gearing up for its busiest time of the year with seasonal employment opportunities.
“We always balance how many we need versus how many we can keep on board after the holidays,” said general manager Janine Ball. “We are very strategic about it – we don’t want to hire 100 people only to get rid of 80.
“There will be those people that transition from an occasional seasonal environment to permanent positions.”
While the primary reason for seasonal staff is to manage the holiday rush, Ball said having extra employees allows for more flexibility, with part-time staff or people falling ill.
But it’s not just Christmas and Boxing Day that they have to worry about – Ball said Canadians are embracing the concept of Black Friday, opting to shop at stores on this side of the border instead of joining the stampede in the U.S.
“We really see that trend now, especially with the Canadian dollar – there isn’t the incentive, necessarily, to cross the border right now with the Canadian dollar being so weak,” she said. “The retailers up here are giving those types of discounts
throughout the season.”This Christmas season
will be a first for the Uptown location as a Best Buy, since it changed over from being a Future Shop in March. While the Island’s three previous Best Buy locations – Victoria, Langford and Nanaimo – closed their doors in 2013, the electronics giant announced earlier this year it was giving a new coat of blue paint to the last remaining Future Shops.
“The biggest transition is going from a commission-based sales environment to a non-commission sales environment,” said Ball. “The community has been extremely supportive, which has been great because we lost a lot of good people.”
That said, Ball noted their current sales force has upwards of 80 people, who were
very supportive during the transition.
“I couldn’t have asked for more from the community, they’ve just been phenomenal,” she said. “We’re very happy and very excited with where the store is going – it’s been tremendous.”
Ball said her store has fit in well with the rest of Uptown, noting it’s an ideal location for both residents and tourists as the shopping centre becomes more prominent in the area.
“I think it does allow Saanich to have its own community, its own hub, as well, to differentiate a little bit from the old-town atmosphere of Victoria,” she said.

Reynolds runners settle for second at provincialsA pair of Reynods secondary athletes
missed a sweep of the junior and senior boys B.C. High School Cross Country Championship titles by a matter of inches in Langley on Saturday.
Grade 10 Kalum Delaney finished the junior boys race in 17 minutes and 41 seconds, missing first place by about 10 centimetres,
Delaney was pipped by Jaxon Mackie of Earl Marriott (17:41). Reynolds senior Brendan Hoff (23:48) was almost as close, finishing second in the six-kilometre race, a little more than an arm’s length behind
Point Grey’s Kieran Lumb (23:47).
The Reynolds senior boys team, with Taylor Lyman (19th), JJ Carr-Cannings (40th) and Jonah Smith (49th), plus fifth Daniel Roke (126th), was second overall in the team standings behind Oak
Bay. “That means in the last four years
the Reynolds senior boys team has been second, third, sixth and second in the province,” said Reynolds coach Brad Cunningham.
Hannah Henry, the versatile Grade 11 Mount Douglas secondary track star and triathlete,
finished third overall, an entire minute behind Vernon superstar Hannah
Bennison. The latter put nearly a minute on second place to win the four-kilometre senior girls race in 16:41, ahead of second place Christina Sevsek (17:34) and Henry (17:41).
Chrissa Tromp of St. Michaels University School was 41st among senior girls (20:13) and Holly Henry of Mount Doug was 68th (20:54).
St. Andrew’s School athlete Bridget Mateyko was once again Saanich’s top junior girl, 12th overall with a time of 19:16 in the 4.6km race.
The Saanich Fusion Football Club Maude Hunter’s division one men lost to Vancouver Island Soccer League leaders Cowichan FC 5-0.
The 2015/16 season continues to be an up and down season for SFFC Maude Hunter’s. The loss to Cowichan FC drops SFFC Maude Hunter’s to fifth place in the VISL.
SFFC Maude Hunter’s next game is against sixth-place Gorge FC at Tyndall Park on Friday, kick off at 8 p.m.
The SFFC Premier women were defeated by the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association league leading Castaways Highlanders 4-1.
Meggie Shields scored SFFC’s lone goal on a tough outing for SFFC as they faced the best team in the league without their starting goalkeeper.
“We played hard, but conceded too many goals to a good team,” said SFFC Premier head coach Justin Parish.
Next up for the SFFC Premier women are Lakehill FC on Sunday at Braefoot Park, kick off at noon.

The Mount Douglas Rams jumped ahead early and never looked back in a convincing 43-7 win over the Belmont Bulldogs last Friday.
Declann Michielin paced the Rams first-half attack, scoring a pair of touchdowns on the ground and another after hauling in a pass from Gideone Kremler.
Michielin finished with 91 yards on 10 carries, while Manny Lopez picked up 71 yards on four carries and converted lineman Aidan Kachanoski rumbled for 29 yards and a touchdown on three carries. Kremler compiled 114 yards
in the air and three touchdown strikes, with Josh Lucas and Oliver MacKenzie collecting the other scores.
Michael Olson led the Rams defence with four tackles, three sacks and a safety. A total of 18 different Rams registered tackles, with Aidan Kachanoski collecting a pair of sacks and Trystin Waters getting to the quarterback as well. The Wolf of the Week went to Isaiah Hunt, who recovered a fumble on a kickoff.
The win earned the Rams a first-round playoff bye.
The Junior Varsity Rams used a
suffocating defence to shut out Belmont 27-0.

The win moves the Junior Rams to 6-2 on the year (2-2 in league play) and gives them a bye in the first round of the playoffs, with their next game Nov. 18.

Saturday is the sixth national Neighbourhood Toy Store Day and Timeless Toys in Broadmead Village is throwing a
party for kids of all ages.
These days, those in the know ‘shop local’ when stocking the kitchen pantry,
says Timeless Toys owner Neil Rogers. But support for local resources doesn’t have to end at the refrigerator door.
“Local stores also make holiday toy shopping easier, by offering a personalized approach and additional customer service that contrasts with the sometimes frazzling experience of shopping large retailers.”
On Saturday, Timeless Toys will join locally owned stores across the country to celebrate Neighbourhood Toy Store Day, an annual celebration in which independent toy shops kick off the holiday season with special events to introduce consumers to the benefits of shopping local.
Both of the Timeless Toys locations, at Broadmead Village and the original on Oak Bay Avenue, are hosting magic shows, face painting, giveaways, contests, cupcakes, popcorn and more throughout the day.
Timeless Toys and Canadian game and puzzle company Outset Media started about the same time, said former Timeless Toys owner Glenn Kolb, who now works at both stores as a manager.

Saanich Minor Hockey’s Midget Tier 1 Braves are competing in the Greater Victoria Midget Hockey Classic this weekend. Following round-robin games Wednesday and Thursday, the Tier 1 Braves face the Hollyburn Huskies Friday at 7 a.m. at the University of Victoria’s Ian Stewart Complex, then the Richmond Blues at 1 p.m. at Westhills Arena. Playoff games start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Panorama Arena with the gold medal game at 2:30 p.m.
The Saanich Junior Braves visit the Westshore Wolves at the Q Centre Wednesday. Puck drops at 7 p.m. The Braves then play at home on Friday, Nov. 20, hosting the Nanaimo Buccaneers at Pearkes at 6:30 p.m.
After away games during the week, the men’s and women’s Camosun Chargers basketball teams host the Quest Kermodes at PISE Nov. 20. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. and the men’s game follows at 8 p.m.
The Camosun men’s volleyball team starts its week playing the University of Fraser Valley Cascades at PISE at 8 p.m. on Friday and also at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The squad finished on the road playing against the Capilano Blues on Nov. 20.
On the gridiron, the Spectrum Thunder football team travels to Campbell River Saturday to take on Timberline in Tier II Varsity play.
Senior boys high school soccer is in playoffs right now with Spectrum and Esquimalt going head to head in the Colonist Shield final. The game takes place on Monday at Hampton Field at 2:30 p.m.

Saanich locksmiths at The Lock Doctor have seen a steady growth in the sale of electric keypads as homeowners enjoy the convenience of going keyless.
“We have one customer who installed them [on every access] to his house,” said Nic Rahn of The Lock Doctor.
“His grandkids visit often and that way there’s no worry of keeping track of keys.”
Some expected numbered keypads to find their way onto the front doors of all residential homes by now but there’s still a chance it could trend that way, Rahn says.
“Right now the entry point for residential keypads are about $174 to $250 and the install time is nearly the same as it is for a traditional deadbolt.”
People are enjoying the freedom, Rahn said.
Keys break, they get lost, and keychains quickly grow to a cumbersome size.
What’s changed about the keyless keypads is the battery life and durability of the locks.
“The batteries now can go for years, but we recommend replacing them when you replace the battery in your smoke alarm, just to be safe,” Rahn said.
Electric keypads do
come with a manual key entry should the battery die.
“One of the benefits is some of electric keypads can be programmed to carry 19 entry codes at a time, a handy thing
for contractor or other workers that need access to the home,” Rahn said.
Rahn’s best seller is the Schlage BE 365 series, a durable keypad starting at $174. Prices vary on the style and finish of the
keypad, such as the Emtek touchscreen model.
