The Arcipelago Toscano National Park is the largest marine park in Europe. It

includes the seven main islands of the Archipelago, some minor islands and

cliffs. Like real pearls in a necklace, the islands differ from one another. Each

though preserves traces of its history, each is unique; their common bond is the

beauty of their natural setting.

Elba is the largest island of the Archipelago: its sea, its beaches, the green of the

countryside, the tiny fortress towns, archaeological treasures, chestnut forests

and more have survived over the centuries and continue to flourish.

On the island of Elba one gets the feeling of “good goods in small parcels” since

one can travel through so may different landscapes and attractions, often in

contrast with each other: areas scorched by sun and wind alongside others

luxuriant and green with life, sandy and pebbled beaches, rocky coastlines and

sheer cliffs.

The history of Elba is rich and interesting: Etruscans, Romans, Saracena,

Pisans, Spanich, French and the Medicis. The attraction over the centuries was

due mainly to the importance of its iron mines (the name Elba derives from

Ilva) but also to its strategic position in the observation and control of the sea

routes. Every invader left important relics of their presence: fortresses,

castles, walled towns, towered buildings and archaeological sites of all sorts.

Without a doubt the most illustrious “guest” to grace the island was

Napoleone Bonaparte who was exiled idyllically here for 10 months. Following

his defeat at Leipzig Napoleon was forced to abdicate choosing to go to Elba

which was then under French dominion. Here he was declared Sovereign. He rd tharrived on 3 May 1814 and left on 26 February 1815 on regaining the throne

of France.

Shortly after, he suffered the defeat of Waterloo which finished his career. thExiled to the island of Sant'Elena, he died on 5 May 1821.

Under his rule Elba flourished commercially, roads, bridges, schools, a hospital

were built, transport was created, mining, vineyards and fishing hugely

improved. The official flag of Elba still in use today was invented by Napoleon:

three bees with a red diagonal stripe on a white background.

He held a proper royal court with his officers, soldiers and carriages. His most

favourite and beautiful sister, Paolina, arranged (sometimes outrageously)

social life and entertainment. Catering to her whims, Napoleon transformed

an antique church into a charming theatre (Teatro dei Vigilanti).th

In 2014 the island celebrated the 200 anniversary of Napoleon's ten month

exile on Elba, the place where he actually lived for the longest consecutive

period of his life. Every year this extraordinary event will be repeted from the

4th of May.

VILLA DI SAN MARTINO STATE MUSEUM Opening hours: Open all year round. Closed on Mondays. Week days: 9.00-19.00 - Sunday: 9.00-13.00Napoleon's country residence a few miles outside Portoferraio. A treasure set in a background of woodland which was further enriched by the addition of a Napoleonic Museum by the Russian Prince Anatole Davidoff in 1852.

CHURCH OF MISERICORDIA - MUSEUMOpening hours: Open all year round. Times: 09.30-12.00 / 15.00-17.30

thOn 5 May each year a solemn Mass is celebrated in memory of Napoleon. In the annexed Museum of the Misericordia death-masks of Napoleon's face and hand are on view.

ARCHAELOGICAL MUSEUMHoused in the ancient salt warehouses beside the austere Torre della Linguella

ththere are archeological relics dating from 10 B.C. to 3 D.C. (from 10 century BC rdto 3 century D.C.).

THE MEDICI FORTRESSESstStarted by Cosimo 1 de' Medici, Duke of Tuscany in April 1548, three fortressed

towers connect the city walls and have been declared such a spectacular example of military architecture as to merit Portoferraio the status of most important citadel in the Mediterranean after Malta.

VISIT THE NAPOLEONIC MUSEUMSBy car: starting from Portoferraio Marina, it's possible to visit both Napoleonic Museums in about two hours. of pathways in excellent condition. The morphology of the island means bikers can pedal along untamed beaches, along woodland paths up and over panoramic headlands take a break and cool down at one of several natural springs, rest and meditate at one of the ancient hermitages tucked away in unexpected corners all located just a few kilometres from one another.

HIKING & TREKKINGHiking on Elba involves contact with thousands of years of its inhabitants' history, from prehistoric caves to stone villages, coming unexpectedly upon Etruscan furnaces and forts, quarries where the Romans extracted granite for their buildings. Rich vegetation ranging from spectacular centuries-old chestnut trees on Mount Capanne to the myriads of multi-coloured wild flowers covering fields and boulders all over the island. Elba has something to offer to everyone: lovers of nature can take “a walk on the wild side”, lovers of art and history can take a cultural stroll in Elba's museums and enthuse over the archaeology of its scenery.

The Island of Elba is situated in a strategic position at the crossroads between the major routes of yachting in the Mediterranean.The island's size allows Captains to find a safe shelter in any weather condition. In the following map we suggest the charming bays of the island for a safe and attractive anchorage.

jet skis are allowed to operate during daylight hours only at minimum 400 meters from the coast;

driver and passenger must wear a life vest or life belt;

special corridors must be used for launch and return;

the exhaust tube must be kept beneath the water;

the maximum speed limit in corridors is 3 knots.
