2019 FAMILY FISH FRY: It’s

that time of year again! We have started to plan for this

year’s Family Fish Fry, which will take place for six consecutive Fridays beginning March 8, 2019. There are many opportunities for adults and teenagers to help. Service hours will be provided for teens and high school students. Both Parishioners and school families are encouraged to help. This event brings together the school and parish in a unique fellowship to support our school and youth ministries at Saint Louise de Marillac. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours to run them for six weeks, but it’s also a great deal of fun. To help make this a manageable undertaking, we are especially in need of the following positions! If you are interested in helping, but are only able to do it a few weeks out of the six, please reach out and let me know. We can use as much help as possible.

Thursday evening set-up chairperson or co-chairs

Friday night Clean-up chairperson or co-chairs

Friday Kitchen Prep chair or co-chair

Please call or send me an email if you are able to help. Thank you, Tracey Buckley 412-833-1010 ext. 236 or [email protected]

If you are at least 18 years of age you must have your clearances to volunteer!

March for Life—We are very excited to announce the 2019 March for Life taking place Friday, January 18, 2019 in Washington, DC. It is a day-trip, down and back, leaving the Church at 6:45am. There will be a Mass at 6:00am, and then we depart. We should be back home between 10:00pm and 11:00pm. This years theme is "Unique from Day One" pointing to the ultimate truth that God has made us as a gift from the moment of conception. Please sign up on the Saint Louise Parish website: https://stlouisedemari llac.org/this -week/news-announcements In years past we have benefited from some very generous parishioners that sponsored the March For Life insofar as offsetting the costs of the bus itself. This year we would like to invite all of you to partner with us and help underwrite the cost of this trip. If you would like to contribute to the March for Life, please contact Denny Costello at [email protected]

Thank you!

Sharing the GOOD News: Today we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord. We hear how John the Baptist points to One much greater than he. Jesus has given us the gift of the Sacrament of Baptism, that we may be cleansed of original sin; welcomed and become Children of God, as well as members of this Faith Family and Holy Community that we call Church! This is the beginning of our relationship with Christ… We all were blessed with the holy waters, and received the Light of Christ as part of this experience. May we go forth this week and share that Light with all whom we meet along the way. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES: REGULAR CLASS SESSIONS RESUMED this week. We will have classes on Monday – January 14, Wednesday – January 16, Thursday – January 17. There is NO CLASS on Monday, January 21; but regular classes resume on January 23, 24, 28, 30, and 31. PLEASE NOTE: EDGE will have sessions on Wednesday, January 16, AND January 30, from 6:45 to 8:30p.m. in LeGras Hall. AS WE CELEBRATE THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD THIS WEEK: Would you like to consider sharing your time and talent with our Religious Education Program? As the Lord calls us in this new time to be His Disciple Makers, and to share the Good News of Jesus with his young people, we find that we are in need of one Hall Monitor for Wednesday evenings from 7:00p.m. to 8:15p.m., and a 7th Grade Catechist for Monday Sessions from 4:45 to 6:00p.m. beginning the week of January 28, 2019. Please contact the Religious Ed Center to further explore these opportunities: e-mail [email protected] or call 412-835-1155. Thank you and God Bless you! IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING for ALL 2nd Graders of the Parish: Parent(s)/Guardians are asked to contact the Religious Education Center at [email protected] or call 412-835-1155. to receive all materials and important information concerning their child’s preparation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Thank you! Marriage Moments: “It’s New Year’s resolution time. Even if you’ve already broken some resolutions, recommit to putting your beloved first – in words, in acts of kindness, in attention.” © 2019 by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

Parenting Pointers: “January 13, is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. If your children are old enough recount with them the story of their Baptism. If you can remember, tell the story of your own baptism and what it has meant to you. ” © 2019 by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

Prayer at Baptism: “Father, You give us grace through sacramental signs, which tell us of the wonders of Your unseen power. In Baptism, we use Your gift of water which You have made a rich symbol of the grace You give us in the Sacrament. At the very dawn of creation, Your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of all holiness.

The waters of the great flood, You made a sign of the waters of Baptism that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness. Through the waters of the Red Sea, You led Israel out of slavery to be an image of God’s holy people, set free from sin by Baptism. In the waters of the Jordan, Your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Sprit. Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from His side as He hung upon the cross. After His resurrection, He told His disciples: ‘Go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.’ We ask You, Father, with Your Son, to send the Holy Spirit upon us now. May all of us who were buried with Christ in the death of Baptism rise also with Him to newness of Life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN!”

Divine Mercy Apostolate

Divine Mercy Apostolate: A Ministry of Prayer for The Sick and Dying—Do you have a loved one who is near the end of life? Is your loved one at home, hospice or nursing home? Our Lord's Mission to proclaim His message of Divine Mercy to the whole world was entrusted to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, a simple, uneducated nun who was filled with courage, self-abandonment, and with child-like TRUST IN Jesus. The message is that His mercy is greater than our sins, and that we are to ask for and trust in His Mercy especially at the hour of our death. Our Lord gave the Divine Mercy Chaplet to Saint Faustina as a powerful prayer to be prayed for the sick and dying! The Saint Louise de Marillac Divine Mercy Apostolate welcome the opportunity to pray The Chaplet of Divine Mercy at the bedside of the terminally ill and dying. Please request prayer at a time convenient for the patient and family and our ministry will send 2 or 3 members to pray the Chaplet, which should take about 15 minutes.

To arrange the Divine Mercy Apostolate to pray the Chaplet , please contact Patt i Lorenzi at [email protected] or 412-780-4255.

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and the other evil spirits, who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen. -Pope Leo XIII

The Chapel is home to the world’s largest collecton of saints’ relics outside of Rome. He will bring to life the inspiring, miraculous and human stories of these holy heroes. All are welcome, please bring a covered dish and a friend. For more information, please call the parish office at 412-833-2400 or visit the parish website, www.mystjoan.org.

Looking for treasures, talents and time…If you are a designer, copy writer or editor, we need your help! We are blessed to have various designers, writers and editors volunteer to help us create the beautiful and professional looking pieces you see to promote our church and school. We are now in need of a few more volunteers to help us. Please contact Tracey Buckley at [email protected] if you are available to donate your treasures, talent and time. Thank you!

Physical Activity: There is no disputing the fact that incorporating physical activity into our daily lives makes us healthier and happier! Adults aged 18-64 should get 2 hour and 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week. Muscle strengthening activities are also recommended, which include each muscle group, several times a week (but not on consecutive days). Kids need 60 minutes of aerobic exercise every day. The key is to find a routine with activities that work for you: 1. Before beginning a new program, make sure you have

a physical and OK from your doctor, especially if you haven't had one in a while or have a physical disability!

2. You don't need to get all your exercise at one time. Ten minutes morning, noon, and night can give much of the same benefit as 30 minutes all at once.

3. Try a pedometer. Step-counters (pedometers) are cheap and easy to use. Best of all, they help you keep track of how active you are. Build up to 7,000 steps a day—or more.

4. Take the stairs. Use the stairs instead of elevators and escalators whenever possible.

5. Hunt for the farthest parking space. If you drive to work or to run errands, purposefully park your car a little farther from your office or the store.

6. Make it social. Walk with a buddy or join a dance class! 7. Make it your own. Consider buying a piece of

cardiovascular equipment for your home, such as a treadmill, stationary bicycle, or elliptical machine.

8. Have an iPad or Smartphone? There are a number of great video sites that will jump start your routine and add variety! And you don't have to leave the house!

Treasures, Talents and Time

My name is Callie Zollars, I am a member of Saint Louise Parish, and a sophomore at Upper St. Clair High School. I am in the IB (International Baccalaureate) program and for students that are in this program, we have to create a project reflecting on the skills we have acquired throughout the past years. We are told to create a project and choose a topic we are interested in. I chose to help out children from the Home of Hope in Zimbabwe, Africa. The Home of Hope outreach program, located in Zimbabwe, Africa, was created by The Nyadire Connection. The program comprises of 400+ orphans who live with a parent/grandparent, relative, or on their own. Additionally, education is not free, and without support for these orphans, they cannot attend school. These children are in need of lots of supplies. Donations such as hygiene materials, school supplies, new socks, and new underwear are greatly appreciated. Donations will be accepted from January 19-27. A bin can be found in church and in the LeGras Parish Center. Thank you for your support!

Choosing Godparents From time to time questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of the guidelines established by the Catholic Church concerning Godparent eligibility. These regulations should be considered before the parents of a child ask someone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter:

The decision as to who should be a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A Godparent is chosen not primarily to honor the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child.

In order to be a Godparent for Baptism, an individual must be a practicing Catholic, at least l6 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). ’Furthermore, if this person is married, then the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church).

The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain from his or her parish priest a letter of eligibility to be a Godparent.

Only one Godparent is required by Church law. This Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as Godparents.

In extraordinary situations when two Catholic Godparents cannot be found, then a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (e.g. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve as Christian Witnesses.

Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the

life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who

will serve as a Godparent. The guidelines above are meant

to assist parents in making a reasonable and secure

decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their

child. Since they are provided by the universal Church and

individual priests are not vested with the authority to

dispense from them, these guidelines will be strictly

followed at Saint Louise de Marillac.

DIOCESAN VICTIM ASSISTANCE HOTLINE: 1-888-808-1235

You Are My Beloved Son, With You I Am Well Pleased – As Jesus was being baptized by John in the Jordan River we are told of amazing things happening. First, the heavens were opened

and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. Then, the voice of God the Father from heaven thundered, saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus did not need to be baptized for the same reason we do. As the Son of God, he was without sin. Yet, to be baptized is to be anointed to fulfill the mission of God the Father in the world. By being baptized in the Jordan, Jesus set an example for us to follow. Through baptized we are freed from original sin, sanctified by the Holy Spirit to share in the life of God through the Sacraments and in the Church, and anointed to fulfill the mission of faith, hope, and love that God the Father has chosen for us. While the Holy Spirit does not descend like a dove he is present in and through the baptized from the moment of baptism. And while the walls of the church do not shake with the thundering voice of the Father, the halls of heaven ring with joy as every new beloved son and daughter of God is welcomed into the life of faith through baptism. Our baptism was not simply a ritual, but a life-changing event that is in effect throughout our lives. How can the grace of baptism continue to be at work for the good of our parishes and communities? Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed
