1 Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—August 16th 2020—-20th Sunday in Ordinary Time On August 21, the Church celebrates the Feast Day of Pope Saint Pius X (born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto), who served as our Pope from August 1903 to his death in 1914. In this Year of the Eucharist, Pius X is remembered for his encyclical, Quam Singulari, announcing that children who have reached the age of reason(around 7 years old) could receive the Eucharist. The Pope wrote: The pages of the Gospel show clearly how special was that love for children which Christ showed while He was on earth. It was His delight to be in their midst He embraced them; and He blessed them. At the same time, He was not pleased when they would be driven away by the disciples, whom He rebuked gravely with these words: Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of GodIt is clearly seen how highly He (Jesus) held their innocence and the open simplicity of their souls on that occasion when He called a little child to Him and said to the disciples: Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven And whoever receives one such little child for my sake, receives me.Pius explained that: in ancient times the remaining particles of the Sacred Species were even given to nursing infants (which) seems to indicate that no extraordinary preparation should now be demanded of children who are in the happy state of innocence and purity of soul, and who, amidst so many dangers and seductions of the present time have a special need of this heavenly food.During his papacy, Pius X promoted liturgical reforms and orthodox theology. He promulgated the 1917 Code of Canon Law, the first comprehensive and systemic work of its kind. He was the only pope to advocate the use of the vernacular language in teaching catechesis. He encouraged the frequent reception of holy communion among all Catholics. But, he is most remembered for lowering the age of First Communion from 12 years to 7 years old, so that younger children could receive Eucharist. At the very beginning of the Catholic Church, children were allowed to receive Holy Communion with adults. It was common practice to give infants their First Communion along with the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Over time, the Church separated the three sacraments of initiation, administering them at different times in a persons life. By the 20th century, the Church reserved Communion for teenagers and adults, emphasizing that those who receive Communion should understandat least as much as humanly possible the great mystery of the Transfiguration, and Jesustransformation of the bread and wine into His Body and Blood, Younger children, then, were generally banned from even approaching the altar. Pius X hoped that by allowing little children, who had not yet been corrupted by sin, to receive Holy Communion, they would then maintain their baptismal innocence into their adult lives. In making his decision, Pius X was influenced by the life story of Ellen Organ, now remembered as Little Nellie of Holy God. Ellens story was known throughout Ireland, but it eventually reached Pius X in Rome at the time he was considering lower- ing the age for the reception of the Eucharist. When he read Ellens story, it aroused his wonder and delight, and soon af- ter he issued Quam Singulari. Born in Waterford City, Ireland, on August 24, 1903, the youngest of four children under the age of nine, Ellen Organ was called Nelliefrom her birth. In January 1907, Ellens mother died of tuberculosis. Her father found it impossible to raise is children and maintain his job, especially because, when Ellen was an infant, she had a serious fall that caused her spine to become crooked and her hips and back out of joint. She lived in constant pain and was unable to sit up straight. In May 1907, Ellen and her sister Mary contracted Whooping Cough and were sent first to a hospital run by the Sisters of Mercy. After recovering, they went to Saint Finbarr's Industrial School in Cork City, administered by the Good Shepherd Sisters. Ellen Organ lived for eight months under the care of the Good Shepherd Sisters, but she spent most of her time in the infirmary. She loved to visit the chapel which she called the House of Holy God.When told the story of the suffering and death of Jesus she burst into tears. She developed an acute awareness of the Blessed Sacrament and began to have visions. She related how she saw Christ – usually as a little child like herself – and the Virgin Mary. Often, she claimed to have seen the Infant of Prague dancing for her. Her faith was growing, and those who came to know her testified to her holiness. Consequently, the Sisters recommended that she be allowed to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. The local bishop agreed, and she was confirmed on October 8, 1907. Soon, Ellen began asking to receive Holy Communion. The Sisters hesitated, believing that she was too young. Wondering if she understood what the Eucharist was, they observed her at prayer in the chapel and saw that she was captivated by the tabernacle, which she usually referred to as the lock-up.Ellen had been born in the army barracks, where the prison was called the lock-up. She viewed Jesus in the tabernacle as a prisoner in the lockup. Ellen realized, at her young age, that we receive Jesus from the tabernacle so that we can become one with Him and therefore, take Him with us out into the world- free Him-where He will, through our words and actions, bring His Love and Light to those who need it most. During Mass when Ellens caregivers came back from Communion, the child would ask them to kiss her so she could somehow share in their Communion. She continued to beg to be allowed to receive the Eucharist. The Sisters spoke with a Jesuit priest who ministered to the community, and he decided to come to speak to her. After spending some time with her, he believed she had reached the age of reason at an extraordinarily young age. He brought the matter to the bishop's attention who consented, and Ellen made her First Communion on December 6, 1907. From December 1907 and February 1908, Ellen was in constant pain. Many visitors, noticed her intense prayer life. She was constantly happy. She contracted tuberculosis and caries, a mouth disease that made it painful for her to eat and caused a horrible mouth odor. She did not complain of the pain this caused her. Instead, holding the crucifix in her small hands, she contemplated the pain that Christ endured during the crucifixion, repeating, Poor Holy God. Poor Holy Godover and over. It was noted by the Sisters and nurses that, after she began receiving Holy Communion, her horrible bad breath disappeared. Ellen became aware that she was going to die soon, and this did not trouble her: it made her happy. She died on February 2, 1908. In 1909, her body was exhumed to move to a new cemetery because of the many pilgrims who were visiting her grave. Her body appeared unchanged from the day of her burial, with her limbs flexible and her dress and Communion veil like new.

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—August 16th 2020—-20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Latest Update: In the early morning hours of Sunday August 2nd, two incendiary devices (Molotov Cocktails) were thrown against the doors of Sacred Heart Church. It is senseless act to vandalize a house of worship, but it is necessary to continue to pray for the individual(s) responsible hoping that they will do no harm further to any other church and persons. Last week a hazmat crew cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the church so we could be open for Masses. Please God, we will be able to restore the beautiful doors and entrance to this sacred house dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our church is the dwelling place of His Sacred Presence where generations have peacefully come to worship and adore Him. Many will remember the tragic night, June 9th 2005, when fire destroyed the old Sacred Heart church. Many will also remember the dedication of the new church on December 15, 2007. In the Book of Blessings there is a special blessing for persons who have fallen victim to hate or crime. It begins with the cry of the Psalmist “You are our refuge, O Lord” Ps 142: “Lord God, your own Son was delivered into the hands of the wicked, yet He prayed for His persecutors and overcame hatred with the Blood of the Cross. Relieve the sufferings of your people grant us peace of mind and a renewed faith in your protection and care. Protect us all from the violence of others, keep us safe from

the weapons of hate, and restore to us tran-quility and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.” I want to acknowledge and thank our first responders for their continued efforts to apprehend the one(s) responsible for this horrific crime. Throughout the week, I have met with investigators as they pursue justice in the name of peace. Our new lawn sign is a reminder to us all to pray for and honor our first responders and

essential workers.

Remember Jesus call us to love as He loves!

From the Children of Ireland to Little Nellie in Heaven

From the shrines and the homesteads of Ireland A prayer goes to heaven today

From hearts that are simple and stainless And white as the blossoms in May;

A prayer from the children of Ireland to a child in the Kingdom of Light,

That she may ask God to direct them Through the dangers and gloom of the night.

“O, Nellie” they plead, “We are asking That now you’ll remember us all

With ‘Holy God’ smiling beside you, And His Angels so near when you call. We want you to tell Him we love Him

The more since He took you away And gave you a place in His Kingdom

Where you’ll hear every prayer that we pray. Where you’ll always be near to tell Him

The want of the ones that you love Where you always can whisper, ‘God Bless You’

When we look to the Kingdom above. Oh, ask Him to strengthen and bless us When He comes to us here at the rails

That we always may keep Him and love Him Whatever temptation assails.

“And ask Him Who died on Mount Calvary to help and

strengthen us too…To welcome our sorrows and sufferings, And bear them as bravely as you,

And whisper to God’s Holy Mother whenever you sit by her side that the children of Ireland do love her,

that she is their Queen and their guide.”

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—August 16th 2020—-20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Before praying the Angelus on Sunday, August 2, 2020, Pope Francis encouraged us to find our strength in the Eucharist so that we can show more “compassion and tenderness” toward those in need. Reflecting on the multiplication of loaves and fishes (Mt 14: 13-21), the Holy Father said that people went out to “a deserted place” to hear Jesus because His words and actions restored their hope. The connection between Eucharistic bread-nourishment for eternal life- and our daily bread- which we require to survive- shows that there is no opposition between our spiritual and material lives. The Pope said: “Before offering Himself to the Father as the Bread of salvation, Jesus ensures there is food for those who follow Him and who, in order to be with Him, neglected to make provisions.” The Pope also said that, when the disciples tell Him that there are only five loaves and two fishes to feed the multitude of followers, Jesus takes the bread, breaks it, and gives it to the disciples for them to distribute. “With this gesture,” the Pope said, “Jesus expresses His power; not in a spectacular way, but as a sign of charity, of God the Father’s generosity toward His weary and needy children.” Jesus’ compassion and tenderness for the crowd is “the concrete manifestation of the love that cares about people’s needs.” Pope Francis said Jesus is immersed in people’s lives, and that He understands our weaknesses and limits. “He nourishes them with His word and provides plentiful suste-nance.” The Pope urged everyone to draw near to the table of the Eucharist by imitating Jesus’ attitude of compassion. “Compassion is not a purely material sentiment,” he said. “True compassion is suffering with, taking upon ourselves the pain of others.” He encouraged everyone to ask ourselves if we have compassion when we read the news about wars, hunger, or the pandemic. “Do I experience compassion for those people?” Compassion, he added, is “trust in the provident love of the Father and means courageous sharing.” “It is the journey of fraternity,” he said, “which is essential to face the poverty and suffering of this world – especially in this difficult moment – and which projects us beyond the world itself, because it is a journey that begins with God and returns to God.” Pope Francis then prayed that Mary might help us along our Christian journey. In our collaborative each Sunday, Father Sean concludes our Prayers of the Faithful with a prayer for the intercession of Mary, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. With this prayer, we unite ourselves with the prayers of the whole Church as we pray: Pray for us, O Virgin Immaculate, Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament. That the Eucharistic Kingdom of Jesus Christ may come among us! (St. Peter Julian Eymard). St. Padre Pio has said that "(i)n the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, in this Sacrament of love, we have true life, a blessed life, and true happiness." The happiness that we experience in receiving our Lord in Word and Sacrament is meant to be shared, not only with those we love and who love us, but we must share this love and happiness with the unlovable of this world, those whom, like the lepers whom Jesus healed, like the untouchables to whom Mother Teresa ministered, were healed, loved, and saved by the love of Jesus and His disciples. We ourselves must be willing to go to those people in “deserted places” to bring Jesus to the

disenfranchised of this world with words and actions that will give them renewed hope. But, to bring hope to the hopeless, we need to have strength, the strength that our Holy Father says can be found in frequent reception of Jesus in the Eucharist. To go outside of ourselves to bring hope to the hopeless, we need courage. To know what to say and how to say it, we need the knowledge, understanding, and counsel, the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Jesus gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist to nourish and strengthen the life of the Spirit within us so that we could love others-all others-as we love ourselves. For many people, to love themselves, to know themselves as God knows and loves them, is difficult. But, discovering the love of Jesus within our own selves is to discover true happiness. St. Padre Pio reminds us: "A thousand years before enjoying human glory is not worth even an hour spent sweetly communing with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament." Contemplation and communication with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, fills us with a deeper awareness that God made us and God loves us. And so, He trusts us to love others as He first loved us. In the Eucharist our love for God and others-and for ourselves-is nourished and renewed. As we love God and strive to serve His people with our whole mind, our whole heart, our whole soul, our self-knowledge and self-love grows, because we realize, once again, that God has “formed my inward parts…knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise (Him), for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps 139:13-14). Let us never forget that Jesus loves each of us so much that He not only gave His life for our sins, but He gave us bread, the Bread that gives life to the world. It is in the Eucharist and our Adoration of Him that we can find the will, the strength, and the courage to bring His Life and Love to our world, here and now.

Our Lady of the

Most Blessed Sacrament

Virgin Immaculate, perfect lover of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament,

we ask thee to obtain for us the graces we need to become true adorers of our Eucharistic God.

Grant us, we beg of thee, to know Him better, to love Him more,

and to center our lives around the Eucharist,

that is, to make our whole life

a constant prayer of adoration, thanksgiving,

reparation, and petition to Our Lord in the

Blessed Sacrament.

of food. He is to be full of the Spirit and wisdom in his ministry.

(see Acts 6:1-6) With great humility and care Deacon Bash and Geeta have kept inventory,

stocked, sorted and prepared food for the hungry so that our delivery teams can make their scheduled home visits.

Thank you to all our parishioners for your generous

care and support of the Food Pantry. A truly powerful witness of charity and love.

We are blessed with many who witness and teach by word and deed, living out the Great Commandment. (Mt. 25)

Thank you to the many new families who have signed up for on-line giving during the pandemic, please consider supporting your parishes. For more information please visit our website, https://www.shstm.org/giving.
