ASH WEDNESDAY Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! MIÉRCOLES DE CENIZA Oración, ayuno y limosna: estas disciplinas, prescritas por Jesús mismo en el Sermón del Monte, junto con instrucciones estrictas de no hacer alarde de ellas en público para ganar reconocimiento y alabanza (Mateo 6: 1-18), han sido aceptadas por todos los santos al comienzo de cada Cuaresma por casi dos mil años. Pero mencione la Cuaresma, y muchos reaccionan con una mueca o un ligero estremecimiento, ¡incluso ahora, años después de que las obligaciones oficiales se hayan reducido al mínimo! No es de extrañar que el "Anuncio Cuaresmal" del Rito Oriental suene sorprendente: "¡Recibamos con alegría, oh fieles, el anuncio divinamente inspirado de la Cuaresma! ¡La primavera cuaresmal brilla! ¡Comienza el ayuno con alegría! ¡Ayunemos tanto de las pasiones como de la comida, disfrutando de las buenas obras del Espíritu y realizándolas con amor! San Juan Crisóstomo, cuya fiesta es el 13 de septiembre, explica: “¿Ayunas? Da prueba por tus obras. Si ves a una persona pobre, ten piedad. Un enemigo, reconciliarse. FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19). This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). NECEDAD A veces la noción del arrepentimiento parece anticuada, ingenua y hasta necia. Pero si buscas locura, la encontrarás en las lecturas de hoy. Comencemos con Levítico y la amonestación “no te vengues ni guardes rencor” (Levítico 19:18). Por supuesto que hemos escuchado este mensaje antes, y por eso puede que olvidemos lo alejado que está de las “realidades prácticas de la vida”, contra las que nos advierte san Pablo. Será mejor que quien se considere sabio “se haga ignorante”, porque “la sabiduría de este mundo es ignorancia ante Dios” (1 Corintios 3:18, 19). Esta “locura” continúa en el Evangelio: “No hagan resistencia al hombre malo” (Mateo 5:39). De hecho, presenta la otra mejilla, si has sido golpeado. Dale tu abrigo al que te pide la camisa. Sé como Dios que manda el sol y la lluvia sobre justos e injustos. “Sean perfectos”, dice Jesús, “como su Padre celestial es perfecto” (5:48). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

You are reminded to use common sense in your participation at mass and the reception of Holy Communion from the chalice during the annual cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from partaking of the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. In the same way, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace (or during the Lord’s prayer). A smile and a heartfelt, "Peace be with you," should suffice. Likewise, if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace or receiving Holy Communion from the communal chalice for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must be aware of such sensitive matters in the intimate life of the Christian community and we should expect that some will refrain from participation in the liturgy or the sign of peace and the communal chalice out of care for our wellbeing and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety.

Se le recuerda que use el sentido común en su participación en la misa y en la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión del cáliz durante la temporada anual de resfriado y gripe. Si se siente enfermo o cree que pudo haber estado expuesto a un virus, debe abstenerse de participar de la Sangre de Cristo del cáliz comunal. De la misma manera, debes abstenerte de ofrecer tu mano a los demás en señal de paz (o durante la oración del Señor). Una sonrisa y un sincero "La paz sea con usted" debería ser suficiente.
