Principal Two weeks of Term 2 have passed and already many activities have taken place as the College settles into the learning and teaching program for the term ahead. Our first gathering as a school community took place when we returned on Easter Tuesday and celebrated Jesus’ Resurrection in Kendell Hall. Pope Francis, in his Angelus Address on Sunday, 28 April, reflected on the Resurrection of Jesus in terms of the three gifts that Jesus brought to his disciples in his post Resurrection appearances. Jesus brought the gifts of peace, joy and mission. Pope Francis explained:

1. Peace “The Risen One brings genuine peace because through His sacrifice on the cross, He realised the reconciliation between God and humanity and vanquished sin and death. This is peace.”

2. Joy “The evangelist says that the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. And in Luke’s version, there is also a verse that says they couldn’t believe because of their joy.”

3. Mission “He says to them As the Father sent me, even so I send you. Jesus’ Resurrection is the beginning of a new dynamism of love, capable of transforming the world with the presence of the Holy Spirit.”

As we journey through the Easter Season to Pentecost, may we be filled with these gifts of peace, joy and mission. May we be bearers of peace to those around us. May we be joy-filled living in the knowledge that Jesus walks with us as we continue the mission of Jesus and his first disciples in our families, communities and world.

> Attention Years 7 & 9 Parents - NAPLAN Testing The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students will undertake the 2019 NAPLAN tests. The NAPLAN tests are conducted by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) on behalf of the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Your daughter will be sitting these tests at school as part of her normal school day. Normal timetabled classes will occur around the test timetable. Students will be supervised by their classroom teachers and complete each task under test conditions. Sacred Heart students will be completing the paper version of the tests in 2019. We would ask that attendance at school is a priority on these days and to avoid scheduling any personal appointments on these dates, as test dates cannot be rescheduled. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children. All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your daughter prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. ACARA and the College do not recommend the use of commercial products, such as booklets and practice tests, to help your daughter prepare for NAPLAN tests. None of the commercial products currently on the market are endorsed by ACARA. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later in the year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their daughter is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their daughter’s results to discuss progress with teachers. Further information for parents is available on the NAPLAN website Arrangements for Test Days – Years 7 and 9 students Please ensure that students have the required materials with them on these days; a 2B or HB pencil, sharpener, eraser, and on Thursday their calculator.

Mission and Ministry Team

Easter Prayer Service To begin Term 2, the whole school gathered for a beautiful Easter prayer service in the morning. The liturgy started with the announcement that ‘Jesus is Risen, Alleluia’ by the College Captain, Ebony Kellett. It was amazing to hear the response of ‘Alleluia’ from all the girls and staff, and a wonderful reminder of the joy of Easter. This was followed by ‘Jubilate Deo’, sung by the musettes, and John’s Gospel which tells the story of Mary Magdalene finding the empty tomb on Easter Sunday. After the gospel was the lighting of the Paschal candle and the lighting of the homeroom candles. The homeroom candles were carried to the stage by the homeroom representatives where they were lit by the Faith and Liturgy leaders. It was moving to see the light of the candles across the front of the stage, a sign of the Risen Jesus and how His light shines into our lives. While the candles were being lit the Musettes sang ‘Sing to the Lord’. Mr Dalton’s address followed the lighting of the candles, and he reflected on the recent Sri Lankan bombings and the impact of these upon the Sacred Heart community. He reminded each of us to help one another and be a person for someone else, as Jesus was. The Easter prayer service was a very beautiful beginning to the term, and a moment for all of us to stop and reflect on the Risen Jesus and how He can change our lives. Claire Duckett 9 Red

Lenten Reconciliation On Wednesday, 3 April Years 10 and 11 participated in a Reconciliation Liturgy in the Sacred Heart Parish Church. This liturgy provided time for us to reflect on ourselves and our lives as well as a time to reconnect with God. We listened to a scripture passage from the Gospel of Luke about the shepherd leaving the ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness to go out and find the one missing. This passage showed us that we are always welcome to come back to God as he is always looking out for us and coming to find us. The Examination of Conscience allowed us to concentrate and think about our relationship with God - what God gives us in life and how much we need him in our lives. We were also able to reflect on our relationships with others, especially our family and friends, and to consider ways to strengthen these important connections. ANZAC Day

On April 3, a group of Year 10s were accompanied by Mrs Blain, Mr Milesi and Sister Suchitra to the Rotary Club of Monash’s annual ANZAC Service, which was held in Glen Waverley. In attendance were many Primary and Secondary schools from the City of Monash that joined us for the event. When walking to the area, the organisers offered us Australian flags and ANZAC biscuits. After finding our designated area and sitting, the event commenced. The President of the Rotary Club gave a warm welcome to the schools that attended and thanked the students for joining them on this special occasion. A highlight of the event would be the powerful speech that Annette Holian delivered as her Anzac Address. In her speech, she spoke about things that happened in war. One particularly memorable anecdote was about a dog that was a part of the Australian soldiers unit in Afghanistan, who sniffed out bombs before they drove over areas, and had become lost in the battlefield. As Annette is a doctor, she tended to the soldiers’ wounds after arriving back at base and all she heard from them was “she’s missing, she’s gone”. She later realised they were referring to their canine companion who was left behind. Fortunately, another soldier spotted the Labrador wandering around in an Afghan village, and immediately returned her back to the Australian base. The soldiers were overjoyed in having her back with them and it shows just how significant she was to them, not only as a dog who sniffed out bombs, but as a friend. After her speech, the soldiers began their march. They did so in an orderly fashion into the centre of where we were seated and they had been given instructions of where to stand, turn and look. Soon they marched out before the wreath laying. Patricia and I were chosen as the wreath-bearers for SHGC and went up with a Primary school to lay the wreath in the middle, against the Cenotaph that had the names of fallen soldiers that were from the Glen Waverly area. Nearing the end of the event, John Mansfield, the Bugler played the Last Post as we all stood in respect. Following the Last Post, there was a silent tribute. We observed one minute’s silence to commemorate and remember the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought courageously in Gallipoli and left us all a powerful legacy. It was an honour being a part of the event and being able to represent the school as it was a new experience for myself and possibly for every other student, teacher and parent that accompanied us to such an important occasion. Lest we forget.

Year 8 News

The social justice pillar is a critical component of the Year 8 i-ECSSAL Wellbeing Program and Project Compassion was a great opportunity for students to develop and demonstrate creative thinking, collaborative skills, initiative and empathy. Students brought items from home such as lemons and tomatoes and quickly sold them to very keen customers. Furthermore, enterprising students from two Year 8 classes organised the very successful production and sale of delicious jelly cups. The lunchtime music concert held in the final week of Term 1 provided a number of our talented vocalists and orchestra members the opportunity to perform in front of a very large and appreciative audience. Keen performers from 8 Purple wowed the crowd with a spirited rendition of the One Direction song ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. After many weeks of juggling schoolwork and rehearsals, twelve Year 8 students are preparing to showcase their talents in the SHGC production of Annie Jnr. Good luck to the cast and crew! Students have continued to practice their juggling skills and a number of students and staff are now quite proficient at this complex skill. Unfortunately, many others have given up. My previous newsletter article covered the 4Ps (Passion, Practice, Persistence, and Patience). Resilient learners demonstrate these attributes. The objective for this ‘hands-on’ activity was to give students a greater appreciation of how to work toward long term goals and develop the traits that enhance resilience. So… take a short break out of a busy schedule and check with your daughter about her juggling progress and even better, ask her to teach you! Our first Wellbeing session of Term 2 was an introduction to ‘soft skills’ and covered the importance of good body language and how to formally introduce people. Future sessions aim to further develop interpersonal skills. Fitting within the E-for-Enterprise pillar of the Year 8 i-ECSSAL Wellbeing program, ‘soft skills’ are key transferable skills and attributes that are highly prized by employers and relevant in all aspects of our day-to-day lives. National Schools Constitutional Convention From 19 March – 21 March, I attended a three day Constitutional Convention. My application was selected from a range of students in Victoria who had attended the Local and State Conventions. Myself and the other successful delegates flew to Canberra to discuss the importance of changing the constitutional preamble. Throughout my three days there we completed a wide variety of activities ranging from writing a new preamble to eating dinner at the High Court. Whilst writing a new preamble it was vital that we included key points that we believed to be central to Australian cultural values, this included ideals such as the acknowledgement of the Indigenous Australians and core values such as democracy, freedom and liberty. Despite having an amazing dinner at the High court, my most cherished time throughout my trip would have to be meeting 24 other students from Victoria with whom I instantly clicked. We created an instant bond and made memories which I will cherish for ever. The experience allowed to me to not only broaden my knowledge but also the ways in which I view the world and how I, as a young Australian, have the ability to be the change I wish to see in my country. Year 12 > Theatre Studies Performance

You are warmly invited to a performance of Alana Valetine's play "Watermark" on Tuesday 14 May, 6pm in the Fourvière Centre. The Year 12 Theatre Studies class has been working very hard on this play, taking responsibility for all areas of stagecraft. "Watermark" is a chronicle of both the physical and psychological devastation of flood in the Northern Territory town of Katherine on January 26, 1998. Based on written and oral testimony from flood survivors, the play evokes the power and torment of flood damage in a small town - the tensions and grief, the friendships and kindnesses, the fears and losses. Held together by a beautiful poetic narration that personifies the river as it swells and swamps, "Watermark" is a testament to both the fragility and endurance of community in times of hardship. We hope to see you there! Thank you Ms Learmonth English / Theatre Studies Teacher
