SACRED HEART NEWS Summer Term—Issue 3 Friday 10th May 2019 MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT HEADTEACHER Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, This week, sporng news has been dominated by the amazing turn around in fortune of the two English clubs in the champions league semi-finals. As well as being an amazing and emoonal spectacle for fans, we can all take something away from the spirit shown by the teams in their amazing comebacks. We all face set-backs in life and can at mes face challeng- es that seem too great to surpass. However, in the words of Mo Salahs t-shirt, we should Never give up”. We may not always succeed, even with the greatest of efforts, but amazing things can, and do happen, if we put in the work, and keep trying. The other powerful message, for me, from watching these matches was the power of the team. We all need a team behind us to succeed, and never is this more the case than during stressful mes, such as the coming exam period. We should value our own teams of parents, family, teachers and friends and make sure we are doing what we can to be the best team mates possible for others. Do you remember to liſt people up rather than bring them down? Are you a friend who knows when to listen and when to speak? Can you help your friends to make good choices and be there for them when things go wrong? As Chrisans, we should remember too, that we are part of Gods team. We all have our individual roles to play. No team of 11 strikers, or 11 goalkeepers would ever succeed! Our diversity of talents, experience and skills can be used to beer the world rather than diminish it. We should value the differences in others and play our part in life to the best of our ability. As Year 11 leave us today for study leave we wish them all the best of luck. Year 11s own team spirit was much in evidence during todays Mass, t-shirt signing and other final school rituals marking this important milestone in their life journey. They can also be confident that they have been well prepared for their examinaons by their team of outstanding teachers and now is the me for them to keep supporng each other and keep trying unl the very end. Have a wonderful weekend. Mrs Hetherington Assistant Headteacher

Summer Term—Issue 3 Friday 10th May 2019

MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT HEADTEACHER

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

This week, sporting news has been dominated by the amazing turn around in fortune of the two English clubs in the champions league semi-finals. As well as being an amazing and emotional spectacle for fans, we can all take something away from the spirit shown by the teams in their amazing comebacks.

We all

face set-backs in life and can at times face challeng-es that seem too great to surpass. However, in the words of Mo Salah’s t-shirt, we should “Never give up”. We may not always succeed, even with the greatest of efforts, but amazing things can, and do happen, if we put in the work, and keep trying.

The other powerful message, for me, from watching these matches was the power of the team. We all need a team behind us to succeed, and never is this more the case than during stressful times, such as the coming exam period. We should value our own teams of parents, family, teachers and friends and make sure we are doing what we can to be the best team mates possible for others. Do you remember to lift people up rather than bring them down? Are you a friend who knows when to listen and when to speak? Can you help your friends to make good choices and be there for them when things go wrong?

As Christians, we should remember too, that we are part of God’s team. We all have our individual roles to play. No team of 11 strikers, or 11 goalkeepers would ever succeed! Our diversity of talents, experience and skills can be used to better the world rather than diminish it. We should value the differences in others and play our part in life to the best of our ability. As Year 11 leave us today for study leave we wish them all the best of luck. Year 11s own team spirit was much in evidence during today’s Mass, t-shirt signing and other final school rituals marking this important milestone in their life journey. They can also be confident that they have been well prepared for their examinations by their team of outstanding teachers and now is the time for them to keep supporting each other and keep trying until the very end. Have a wonderful weekend. Mrs Hetherington Assistant Headteacher

Since October last year, 12 students from Years 10-12 have taken part in a playwriting competition run by the National Theatre:

During the sessions, students learnt about different styles of plays, read a range of scripts and explored the process of writing a plot, creating interesting characters and building tension. To inspire the students further in writing their own one act plays, I took the students to see a performance of ‘Hadestown’ at The National Theatre. Finally, they took part in a writing workshop and one-to-one feedback session with the professional playwright Jennifer Farmer who writes extensively with and for marginalised communities and under-represented voices. After submitting their 30 minute one act plays at the end of April, there was just a short wait until the results were in! I am delighted to announce that two students from Sacred Heart have had their plays longlisted for the competition. Rachel Daramola’s play ‘Not all Secrets Die with you’ and Makayla Fender’s ‘The Long Road’ were picked out by the judges from 350 entries from schools all over the UK. An outstanding achievement! Further congratulations must go to all of the students who submitted plays for the competition, the Head of the Programme, Sarah Eastaff, said that they were so impressed with the quality of the entries from Sacred Heart. We wish the best of luck to Rachel and Makayla in the next stage of the competition where judges from The National Theatre will whittle the longlist of 97 entries down to just 9 plays for the shortlist, which will be announced on 20th May. The winning play overall will be performed by professional actors at The National Theatre in July and all of the Sacred Heart playwrights are invited to attend the evening celebration.

If you are interested in taking part in this exciting competition next year, please see Madam Dorman as soon as possible.

COUNTDOWN TO EXAMS

For the dates of all forthcoming exams, please go to the Sacred Heart website –

www.sacredheart.southwark.sch.uk. Click on ‘Parents’, then on ‘Forthcoming exams’. This page

of the website is updated throughout the year as exam

timetables and dates are finalised, so please check it on a regular basis.

Parents are reminded that students should not be taken out of school for any reason during exam periods. Medical or dental appointments must not be made during this

time, as exams cannot be rescheduled or taken at another time to suit the student. A stu-dent who misses an exam (for whatever reason) will score zero marks, exactly as they

would for a public exam such as a GCSE or an A level. In such a circumstance, subject teach-ers will base their assessment on classwork and

homework and write reports accordingly.

As a minimum, they should have several black pens,

pencils, a set of colouring pencils, a rubber, ruler and

pencil-sharpener, mathematical equipment

(protractor, set-square, compasses and a working

calculator). All students MUST also have a large

TRANSPARENT PENCIL-CASE.

Please make sure that your son/

daughter is properly equipped for

their forthcoming exams
