FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ITEM ONE: WEDDING BELLS Congratulations to Sacred Heart’s Youth Minister, Brandon Morel, as he “ties the knot” with Janet Farrakhan, the love of his life. Janet and Brandon were married this Saturday at Santa Maria Catholic Church in the Bronx. We wish Brandon and Janet all happiness and joy as they begin their married life.

ITEM TWO: PRAYER GARDEN The newly-ordered pavers for Sacred Heart Prayer Garden have now been installed. We will conduct a blessing of the new pavers Sunday, July 2nd at 12Noon. All are invited. If interested in purchasing pavers or benches, in honor or in memory of friends and family, order forms are available at the rectory. Our next deadline for ordering will be September 30th.

ITEM THREE: MASS SCHEDULE In light of the statistics gathered by the diocese over the course of the past few decades, Bishop DiMarzio has asked all parishes in the diocese to evaluate their current Mass schedule with the goal of reducing the number of Masses celebrated with dwindling congregations. Please see the insert in today’s bulletin.

ITEM FOUR: EXCHANGE STUDENTS World Heritage Student Exchange is seeking two Catholic host families for Ann Miran and Davide. Ann Miran is 16 and from Spain. She has won a competitive scholarship based on need and merit. She loves all sports and loves playing guitar. Her long-time goals are to travel to help the less fortunate in Africa or India. Davide is 17 and from Italy. He is a boy scout with a love of baseball and video games. He loves singing and animals. Both Ann Miran and Davide come with their own health insurance and pocket money and would attend a local high school. If you can help by opening your home-and your heart-please contact Jun Santos at 631-377-9286.

FAMILY MASS

During the school year Sacred Heart celebrates

a Family Mass.

At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for

families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Children’s Choir Sacred Heart has a Parish Children’s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.

Our Family Masses will resume in the fall.

CHILDRENS’ LITURGY OF THE WORD

Our parish celebrates a Children’s Liturgy of the Word mass during the school year.

“Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the

Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”

What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.

Our CLOW masses will resume in the fall.

ENCYCLICAL ON THE ENVIRONMENT Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, was the much anticipated encyclical of Pope Francis on the environment. It was released to the world on Thursday, June 18, 2015. People all over the world eagerly awaited the Pope’s call to save God’s creation and protect the poor (who are those most harmed by ecological destruction). News coverage was extensive and it generated much interest among people of many faiths around the world. You can find an introduction to the encyclical in a 6 ½ minute video that features Catholic voices, online at: http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2015/06/video-outlines-background-for-pope-francis-papal-encyclical/, or go to Yale Climate Connections and search “encyclical background”.

Our Youth Minister, Brandon Morel would like to engage our teens who have now received their confirmation and integrate them into the life of the parish. We have a youth group meeting for 7th & 8th graders after-school on Thursdays from 3pm to 5pm. If you are leaving 6th grade and entering the 7th grade in the fall you are also welcome to attend these meetings. “Join our High School Youth group. Meetings are held on Sunday nights from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. With pizza, games, video, and discussions we continue in growing a community of faith amongst our young people. In addition, we are still in need of volunteers for

Middle School and High School meetings. Please call the rectory at 718-428-2200 ext.
