What was formerly the ClubPro Championships has beengiven an added lustre. Theinaugural PGA NationalChampionship presented byDiners Club was played lastmonth at the CotswoldDowns championship golfcourse near Hillcrest.

The customary pre tourna-ment Pro Am was held onthe Monday for PGA Part-ners and Affiliates and se-lected Diners Club Guestsand then 70 PGA membersteed it up under ideal coastalconditions on Tuesday.

The increased prize fund of R150 000 prize money up for grabs added a dollop of pressure to the pro-fessionals who were struggling to come to terms with Cotswold Downs’s fast, sloping greens. KennethDube, Head Professional at Royal Oak Golf Club said: “The course was the toughest course I haveplayed since I have been playing tournament golf. It is a course that needs a lot of concentration fromtee box to green. It is easy to shoot some big numbers if you lose concentration.”

In the end the testing conditions put a premium on experience and after round 2 it was the veteranshort game expert Derek James from Southbroom who was leading the pack with 2 under par 142.

However Kevin Stone was more consistent under pressure in the third round and after some solid golfhe lifted the trophy with a brilliant final round of 70 – the best score of the day.

Dear Mike

Yes the joys of having children. Ones priorities change quite drastically but as you say it won’tbe too long before you are strolling down the fairway with your son and daughter in tow. Also take the family to the driving range or a mashie course as this can be loads of fun.

Golf offers something that very few other sports do and that is “time together”, so cherishthe years ahead and before you know it they will have lower handicaps than yours!

To the Editor

Back when I used to play golf, I would play roughly30 to 40 times a year. That’s not too shabby consid-ering I was married; owned a home and wasn’t re-tired. And I would play a lot: 18 holes every otherweekend and 9 holes on the weekends that I didn’tplay 18.Most of my Saturdays (or Sundays) werespent on a different golf course within 1-2 hoursdriving distance from my house.

Since 2010 though, things have changed. That year,I played 15 times. 2011 was just 8 times. Last year,14 times. And so far this year, I have yet to step footon a tee-box (yes, I realize it’s already well into June). So what happened? Well, the wife and I (a kid-freecouple of 10 years) decided to, well…have kids. Myson was born in 2010 and my daughter this pastMarch…and I love them both to the moon andback. But adding just one kid cuts into a goodchunk of your leisure time. Adding a second (as I’mfinding out) seems to cut into a much larger chunkthan the first did!

The funny thing is I didn’t even really think aboutnot playing until now. Seriously – so far this yearwe’ve been to an amusement park; a cricket game;the bird park; and the beach (plenty). Golf? Not onethought.

Yes, back when I used to play golf, I loved everyminute of it. And the next time I play, I will loveevery minute of that too. The bottom line is younever stop loving this game – whether you play onceor 100 times a year; golf has a way of endearing itselfto you.

In the meantime, I’ll settle for swinging at a practicegolf ball with a plastic 7-iron that’s too short for me.Though it’s not too short for my 2 year old – itseems golf has already endeared itself on him. Andthat is the light at the end of the tunnel – soonenough (probably too soon), spending time with mykids will include spending time on the golf course.

Regards

Other styles of player may focus only on playing the game, refiningtheir belief structure, dealing with tension well, monitoring their stateand management on the course. While these types of player are gener-ally more effective than the previous example, the trained mind, un-trained swing player too reveals inconsistencies in form as they battlethe inconsistencies of their technical limitations.

How you find the balance is through a blend of both player and thiswill lead you towards the Zone of Optimum Performance.

As your ability in the game improves so too do the pressures that youwill find yourself under, in fact the pressure never ends and it just spikeshigher every level you progress. There are always new goals to achieve.Handling pressure is a controllable entity and is as easy to fix as a phys-ically fault in the game. The key is to continually put yourself underpressure in training and give yourself the opportunity to deal with iteffectively. We need to practice in the Zone.

To do this you need to create a realistic, competitive environment to compete in against yourself.Something that satisfies your creativity, concentration levels and gives you valuable feedback.

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon

The Zone of Optimum PerformanceSome players find sole value in the physical act of training when seeking perfection in the gameof golf. They will spend hours hitting thousands of shots monotonously fine tuning a technicalmove set up by their Pro, fitness instructor or short game guru. While volume training doeshave its merit grooving consistency and confidence, so too does boredom and burn-out alsotake its toll. These players are known as “technical” players, more concerned with the look ofa swing and are generally untrained mentally.

Play the 10 ball game and choose 3 targets to create a channel within.A short range target around 80 to 100 meters, a mid range targetaround 150 to 170 and a long range target of 200 plus. Now, whenfiring at the short range target, see how many balls you can landwithin 6 feet left or right of it. See how many you can land within10 feet left or right of your mid range target and finally within 15feet of your long range target. See if you can make 10 out of 10!When you get the first 7 or 8 in the Zone you’re putting yourselfunder the same pressures in closing out a win, making the cut orqualifying for an event.

In the 10 balls count how many times you made a perfect Routine - Assess, Repair, Program, Let itgo, Learn, Let it go. Without distraction, so back off, you should attain 10 out of 10! Play with yourshot shape, no fighting your swing and use the elements wisely to keep the ball within the corridor ofacceptance. In the programming phase of your routine feel the sensation that works most effectivelyfor you and stick to it. Get the ball into the Play Zone in whatever way possible. After each 10 ballsession, notice trends in where your ball tends to group, your shape, strike and distance control. Stepback, reflect and learn. Then engage in another quality session, grow and find the Zone.

SPECIAL FEATURETUITION & INSTRUCTION

By: Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie (Biokineticist)

One of the first things we learn as golfers is to get our head

behind the ball in the backswing and to keep it behind the

ball until impact, and while this is sound advice it can be

very misleading.

Good shoulder rotationaround the spine is impor-tant to keep the club onplane and be a consistent

ball striker but this becomes quite diffi-cult to do if the head is out of position.

Tilting your head to the right at anytimebe it at address or during the swing isgoing to have an adverse effect on tech-nique particularly in the downswingleading to the dreaded shanks, blocks, slices, duffs and the occasional hook –not a pretty picture.

Roger Wessels – Golf Director KeNako Golf & Sports

Academy

Is yourhead onstraight?

July / August 2013

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

www.sagolftrader.co.za 15

There may be quite a few readers whowill say Jack Nicklaus (still the greatestMajor winner of all time) positioned hishead to the right but he turned his head,he did not tilt it.

Jan’s biomechanical explanation is worthreading to understand how a poor headposition can affect technique.

An asymmetrical position of the head be-tween the shoulders will affect shouldermovement. Moving the head out of po-sition creates tension in neck muscles likethe Levator Scapulae and Sternocleido-mastoid. These muscles attach the headand neck to the shoulder blades, sternum(chest bone) and collar bone (clavicle) re-spectively, any tension or contraction ofthese muscles will pull on or move thebony structures resulting in poor me-chanics, inconsistency and a higher riskfor injury in the golf swing.

When the head is tilted to theright (for a right-handed golfer),elevation of the left shoulder (Pic1) will occur changing the planeof movement in the swing. Forc-ing the left shoulder down whiletilting the head to the right willcause extreme tension and possi-ble strain of the muscles aroundthe shoulder blades and side ofthe neck.

A neutral head position at ad-dress has an added benefit; it al-lows for better alignment when putting because your eye line will be parallel to your target line. It isvery difficult to align the putter face correctly with the eyes across the target line.

An easy correction would be to keep your head aligned with your spine at address and during theswing (Pic 2) but see your local PGA pro if you struggle with awareness of what your head is doingin the swing.

Good golfing and keep your head on straight!

Oliver himself plays regular golf and canchoose from one of the many golf coursesthat are literally on his doorstep such as Steenberg, Clovelly, Westlake, Royal Cape, Rondebosch, Mow-bray or Metropolitan. A little further away and he has courses such as Atlantic Beach and Langebaan upthe West coast and travelling inland he has the likes of Parow, Erinvale and Paarl (to name but a few).

The Western Cape is one of South Africa's most beautiful provinces. It is a region of majestic mountains, colourful patchworks of farmland set in lovely valleys. The province's unmatched natural beauty, famoushospitality, cultural diversity, excellent wine and rich cuisine make it one of the world's greatest touristattractions.

As a golfing destination it is second to none and it was a pleasure to reacquaint ourselves with the regionand to be hosted at such a lovely venue.

Parowdise!

Parow Golf Club moved to its present po-sition in 1976, when the local Municipal-ity had the course built upon a design byKen Elkin. The move was necessary, as

the old nine-hole course was becoming too smallfor the members, and the local authorities sold itfor residential and business development. The newcourse was hacked out of Port Jackson bush andshrubs, and had a fierce reputation at first, whenany wayward shot was lost in the thick bushes bor-dering the narrow fairways. Gradually, the bushwas eradicated and the fairways expanded, so thattoday, it is known as a gentle parklands course, with a variety of water features and an abundanceof bird-life.

The Club has gone through boom times and badtimes, nearly having to close its doors in 2002/3when a series of incidents resulted in a major badtime. Since then the Club has gone from strengthto strength. The alterations and improvementsthat have been effected since 2003 are far too long

to list, but record profits have been ploughed backin to the clubhouse and course, resulting in a Clubthat can now be counted among the best in CapeTown. Tremendously popular among the localcommunity, having a loyal and proud member-ship, making transformation a reality and becom-ing a shining beacon for all other golf clubs tofollow, Parow Golf Club is certainly making aname for itself!

David Frost wins maiden Major

David Frost never flinched in his showdown with Hall of Famer Fred Couples even withhis first major championship on the line and a late rain delay to ponder the stakes.

David Frost never flinched in his showdownwith Hall of Famer Fred Couples evenwith his first major championship on the

line and a late rain delay to ponder the stakes.

Frost parred the final two holes to hold on for aone-stroke victory over Couples last month in theRegions Tradition, the South African's first majortitle in 17 attempts on the Champions Tour.

"We came in from the break and I said to myself,It's not going to be easy," Frost said.

"Freddy's got nothing to lose. He's going to go outthere and hit the shots and fire at the pins. I've justgot to kind of accept it and be up to the challenge."

Both birdied No 16 after play resumed with the sunshining after a delay of 1 hour, 8 minutes for light-ning in a round played at times in driving rain.

Couples and Frost both shot 4-under 68, and Frostfinished at 16-under 272.

It was Frost's second victory of the season and fifthcareer win on the 50-and-over tour.

"We both played very hard today. I don't know who

wanted it more, me or him," said Frost, who tookover the points lead from Bernhard Langer.

"He's just such a tough competitor. I didn't thinkI had it in me, all the good shots he hit out there..I just had to try to stay on top of him."

The two bumped fists coming up on 18 in what hadultimately turned into a two-man duel.

"He played very well," Couples said.

"I gave him pretty much everything I had. I hitsome pretty good shots. I drove it pretty well. Hewas just better the whole day. He stayed one aheadand that's where we ended up."

Also the Toshiba Classic winner in March in Cali-fornia, Frost hit his approach shot to 10 feet of theclosing hole and two-putted to match Couples' par.

Couples had sent his approach into the bunker atright and his potential birdie putt went just to theleft.

"I said to myself, 'If he makes his (putt), I'm justgoing to have to make mine.' I've been in thismatch play situation many times before and that's

just how I try to envision what's going on," Couplessaid. "You can't help it if he's going to roll his puttin."

Couples was seeking a second straight win in amajor. He sat out the Senior PGA Championshipthree weeks ago but won the Senior British Openin 2012.

Frost had come close in a major before but this timemanaged to nurse his one-stroke lead through thefinal round. He lost to Tom Lehman in a three-wayplayoff at the 2010 Senior PGA Championship.

Frost's only bogey came on No 14 while Couplesgot his 68 with six birdies and two bogeys.

Couples, who had a 3-footer for birdie on No 15,left the next hole with a grin after matching Frost'sbirdie.

His expression turned to a wince when his secondshot on No 17 went far to the right, landing downa steep slope from the green next to the grand-stands.

He two-putted for his fourth straight par on thehole and couldn't make up that stroke.

"Really, the letdown, I hit a terrible shot on 17,"Couples said. "I smoked it down there and I justtried a shot that maybe I'm not accustomed to.Under that kind of pressure, I think it was a mentalblunder to not hit the green there and not makebirdie."

Cook had beaten Frost in a playoff at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship inHawaii, and made a final-round run at Shoal Creek.

Cook birdied five of the first eight holes and fin-ished his round with a 66 a couple of minutes be-fore the weather delay.

"We were running all day trying to outrun it,"Cook said. "I guess this is the very definition of scat-tered thunderstorms. They were all over the place."

Langer closed with a 63 to tie the course record withGary Player from the 1984 PGA Championship.Langer had 10 birdies and finished at 10 under.

"If I had made some putts earlier in the week," hesaid, "it would have been pretty nice."

The annual Mossel Bay Sports Festival (thisyear from 20 to 24 September) will includeat least 28 different sporting codes – with

nationally-known events like the KFC Point HighCricket Festival for Under 19s (which had alreadyattracted entries from nearly 30 teams at the timeof writing) and the much-loved PetroSA Marathontaking their places alongside local competitions liketrail running and a skateboarding challenge (andeven a doggie walk!).

“We’re putting together a special package that willallow you to play both here and at Mossel Bay dur-ing the Sports Festival - one day after the other, andat a very reasonable rate,” said Pinnacle Point’s Nic Grundtvig.

He said that Pinnacle Point will be offering low sea-son specials to non-members throughout the win-ter, and that a number of membership packageshave also been placed on the market: “There’s moreinformation on our new-look web site.”

The Mossel Bay Travel Festival (18 to 20 October)- the newest event on the town’s calendar – is set tobring an exciting new trend in tourism to theAfrican continent. It was modelled on the NewYork Travel Festival – and when the organisers,Mossel Bay Tourism, contacted the organisers ofthat event, the Americans immediately suggested anofficial affiliation.

“Like New York, the Mossel Bay Travel Festival isdesigned to celebrate the act of being here – in ourcase here in Mossel Bay, of course – for locals andvisitors alike,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s MarciaHolm.

“And it’s going to be about sharing the town, too,so we’ll be live-streaming as many events as we pos-sibly can, and Tweeting and Facebooking aboutthem, too.”

The event will include a day of desk-top exhibitions, and a day of visits and outings – and both of thelocal courses will be taking part.

“We’ll be offering hugely discounted rounds – andwe’ll be opening our club house as one of the Festi-val’s ‘Voorkamer Museums’,” said Mossel Bay GolfClub’s Louw Strydom. (‘Voorkamer Museums’ areprivate collections of historical, cultural, or naturalinterest that are opened to the public for a day. The concept was created specifically for the TravelFestival.)

Like Pinnacle Point, Mossel Bay Golf Club is alsorunning special rates throughout the winter.

“Of course we’re looking forward to a lot of golfduring the Travel and Sports Festivals – but,” saidLouw, “the thing is, that Mossel Bay has beautifullymild weather right through the whale months (fromnow until about October)... so every day’s a golf dayin Mossel Bay!”

Please go to www.pinnaclepointestate.co.za,www.mosselbaygolfclub.co.za, and www.visitmosselbay.co.za/festivals for more information.

Mossel Bay – the ‘Do stuff ’ destination – is gearing up for a springtime feast of festivals. And the good news, of course, is this means great golf at Mossel Bay Golf Club and

Park makes history at Women's US OpenRolex Rankings No. 1 Inbee Park became only the second player in LPGA history to win the firstthree majors in a season with a four-stroke victory over I..K. Kim at the U.S. Women’s Open lastmonth. The 24-year-old South Korean fired a final-round 74 at the Sebonack GCin Southampton,N.Y. to finish at 8-under-par 280.

This victory, Park’s fourth-career LPGAmajor championship victory and secondU.S. Women’s Open triumph, sets her up

for a date with destiny in early August at theRICOH Women’s British Open, played at the OldCourse at St. Andrews in Scotland. She will at-tempt to become the first player, male or female,to win four professional major championships inone season.

Park, who won the 2012 LPGA Official MoneyList and Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, isthe first player in the modern era to win the firstthree majors in a season. Babe Zaharias, the onlyother player to accomplish the feat, did it in 1950when she won all three majors played that year –the Titleholders Championship, the Women’sWestern Open and the U.S.Women’s Open.Mickey Wright (1961) and Pat Bradley (1986) arethe only other players in LPGA history to winthree majors in a season, though not consecutively.

“I am just very honored to put my name by some-one like Babe Zaharias,” Park said, after acceptingthe trophy and a champagne spritz from the lasttwo Open champs, countrywomen So Yeon Ryuand Na Yeon Choi. “I don’t know what I just didtoday; it’s something very great. It’s scary to thinkabout what I am capable of doing.”

“Believe it or not, I was very calm out there,” saidPark, who became the 15th player to win multipleU.S Women’s Opens. “It was weird; I didn’t feelmuch pressure when I was on the golf course. Iwas nervous last night, but on the golf course, somehow, I felt very calm.”

Park, who led following the second and thirdrounds this week, was the only player to shootunder par during Saturday’s third round whenscoring conditions proved to be very difficult. Herunflappable demeanor and rhythmic puttingstrokes are gaining wide recognition following hersixth win of the 2013 season.

“You know, it's something I thought Annikawould do,” said Angela Stanford. “That's really theonly player that I've played with out here that Ithought would do it. So I mean, I don't know howshe's doing it, but obviously I know she's a greatputter and emotionally she really keeps it undercontrol out there. I'm not sure if she hits it side-ways. I'm pretty sure she hits it pretty straight. I didn't think – after Annika retired I didn't thinkanybody would ever do it, so it's pretty impres-sive.”

The South Korean’s ability to deliver victories orrunner-up finishes over the past year has been be-yond impressive. In her last 24 events, Park haswon eight times and finished runner-up five times. So in more than half of the events she’s played overthat span, she’s finished first or second.

Park began her run at consecutive major champi-onship titles at the Kraft Nabisco Championshipin April where she won by four strokes before leap-ing into Poppie’s Pond at Mission Hills CountryClub in Rancho Mirage, Calif.. She continued thestreak earlier this month at the Wegmans LPGAChampionship, where 36 holes of regulations –and more – were needed on Sunday. Park defeated

Catriona Matthew in a three-hole, sudden-deathplayoff to claim her second major of the season atLocust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, NY.

“I've just done three majors in a row now,” saidPark. “I think it's too early to think about the nextone. I think I really want to enjoy the moment asit is in the moment. I mean, grand slam is verybig. I probably wouldn't get this kind of oppor-tunity ever again. I know this year is a good op-portunity for me.”

In 32 days, Park will tee off in the first round ofthe RICOH Women’s British Open seeking thecement her name in golf ’s history books. OnlyMickey Wright (1961 – 62) has won four consec-utive majors on the LPGA, and no players hasdone so in a single season. Tiger Woods is the onlymale to win four consecutive majors across twoseasons, 2000-2001.

“But I think one of my goals for – one of my goalsfor my career was the career grand slam, not thegrand slam, but I think career grand slam is goodenough for me,” said Park.

“I mean, I haven't done that yet. It would meanso much if I could do the grand slam. But takesso much hard work, and it takes a lot to do. I'mjust glad that I can give it a try at St. Andrews. That's going to be a great experience. Whether Ido it or not, I'm just a very lucky person.”

Inbee Park won her third major of the 2013 sea-son on Sunday. Only three other players in LPGAhistory have notched three majors in one seasonand only Babe Zaharias won three in a row.

Here are the other players who have won threeLPGA Tour majors in one season:

Three consecutive

Babe Zaharias – 1950

Titleholders Championship, March 16 – 19

Women’s Western Open, June 19 – 24

U.S. Women’s Open, September 28 – 30

(three majors played in 1950)

Non-consecutive

Mickey Wright – 1961

Titleholders Championship, April 27 – 30

U.S. Women’s Open, June 29 – July 1

LPGA Championship, October 12 – 15

(four majors played in 1961; Western Open, June 1– 4; won by Mary Lena Faulk)

Pat Bradley- 1986

Nabisco Dinah Shore, April 3 – 6

LPGA Championship, May 29 – June 1

du Maurier Classic, July 24 – 27

(four majors played in 1986; U.S. Women’s Open,July 10 – 13; won by Jane Geddes)

Three is the magic number: A victory for Park onSunday not only gave her the first three majors ofthe 2013 season but also marked her third-con-secutive LPGA Tour win. She won the WegmansLPGA Championship three weeks ago and thenwon the Walmart NW Arkansas ChampionshipPresented by P&G last week. The last player towin three consecutive tournaments on the LPGATour was Lorena Ochoa, who won four-in-a-rowin 2008. LPGA and World Golf Halls of Famemember Nancy Lopez holds the LPGA recordwith five consecutive victories in tournaments par-ticipated in 1978. Annika Sorenstam also accom-plished the feat across two season in 2004-05.

AFFORDABLE GOLF – KZN

The 27-year-old who plays out of Centurion won his second career title just three weeks after hismaiden victory in a performance that left his pursuers unable to match him despite their best efforts.

And they were good efforts: Danie van Tonder and defending championAdilson Da Silva each posteda final round score of six-under-par 66, but Blaauw’s eight-under 64 was too good to be caught.

“The front nine was amazing golf,” said Blaauw, “the best golf I’ve played this year – and maybe thebest of my career.”

“I just felt good this week. I just felt my game wasthere and lucky enough it was one shot goodenough,” said Els.

Q - How tough was the transition from amateurranks to the pro circuit been when you joinedthe pro ranks from South Africa? Tell us a bitabout how you found life on Tour to be, whatwere the most difficult obstacles to overcomeand how things improved during your time onthe LET?

A - It was a bit of a tough transition for me. Thetravelling I found was the toughest. Being awayfrom home for long periods of time and not beingable to see my family, friends and coach was tough.

Q – You had a very solid amateur career and youhave had several top five finishes in your sixyears on the LET. So, does it surprise and frus-trate you that you are still chasing a maiden winin Europe?

Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice

How golf uses technologyto grow the excitementand appeal of the gamewas one of the hot topicsat this year’s KPMG GolfBusiness Forum staged inSt Andrews, Scotland,June 3-5.

Hosted at The Fairmont St An-drews Hotel and supported byVisit Scotland, Scottish Devel-opment International and FifeCouncil, with the assistance ofGolf Tourism Scotland, the GolfBusiness Forum brought to-gether over 250 delegates in-cluding leading brands, developers and world-class golfand leisure operators from morethan 30 countries.

Among the many subjects cov-ered, delegates heard how tech-nology is helping other sports toengage more deeply with audi-ences and how golf, driven bythe professional game, has anopportunity to grow by embrac-ing new technologies.

Talking in the first session, ‘TheBoardroom’, Marc Player, CEO

of Black Knight International, said: “The pace of change is notfast enough in golf. Technologyallows us to communicate in-stantly with audiences aroundthe world and this gives the pro-fessional game an opportunityto become more entertaining, fun and sexy – that is what weneed in golf. We have to em-brace technology, and bring abigger fan base to the game.”

Also taking part in the session,Andrea Sartori, Head ofKPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice, added: “Using the professionalgame as an example, I see noreason why you could not inter-view players during the round,or even get some on-course in-sights from the caddies? Golfneeds to become entertaining to

watch, and can learn a lot fromsports like professional footballwhere players are now inter-viewed at half time. Golf has areal opportunity to enhance itsviewing experience.”

Panel member, GeorgeO’Grady, Chief Executive ofThe European Tour, com-mented: “We are constantlylooking at ways of enhancingthe experience of watching pro-fessional golf and have testedvarious things in recent years. We have to be very careful aboutintroducing different elementsduring the intensity of compet-itive play but are always open toideas that make the propositionricher, as long as it maintains theintegrity of the game.”

In one of the other key sessions,‘Technology: the future is notwhat it used to be’, delegatesheard from Chris Burton, Headof Global Sponsorship for SAP,an organization that has createdtechnology partnerships with ahost of sports, including NBAbasketball and NFL AmericanFootball.

Golf needs to embrace technologyor get left behind’ – say influential industry leaders attending KPMG

Golf Business Forum

www.sagolftrader.co.za July/August 201374

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

Chris said: “As a company we’ve not invested in golf because there hasnot been a credible route to connect all the dots, beyond direct spon-sorship. But imagine how technology – sensors in golf clubs or even achip inside the golf ball – could transform how people watch and interactwith the professional game.

“I think golf has a long way to go. Everyone understands there is an issuebut there doesn’t seem to be a willingness to act. We all accept it, but wedon’t seem to move the needle. If we can work together we can makeone little step to make golf a bit better. You have to put your toe in thewater. I love golf and I love the traditions, we have to respect that, buttechnology can help the golf fan have the best day of their life.”

Also discussed at this year’s Golf Business Forum:

Scotland in Focus

During a compelling session that started with the launch of KPMG’s ‘Value of Golf to Scotland’s Econ-omy’ report, commissioned by the Scottish Golf Union in conjunction with VisitScotland and ScottishEnterprise, it brought together key figures in Scottish golf to debate current opportunities for its £1billion golf industry.

Stewart Walker, Director of Golf Tourism Scotland, said: “The report highlights the importance of golfas an industry in Scotland, and yet we have been complacent in identifying golf as our unique sellingpoint. We’ve got to use the ‘Home of Golf ’ as our consistent message.”

Chris Burton

www.sagolftrader.co.zaJuly/August 2013 75

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

Peter Lederer, Chairman of Gleneagles Hotels, echoed Stewart’s thoughts, adding: “We must not takeScotland and its golf for granted. Great brands are always very consistent, and Scotland has to be lookingto improve and always offer a great experience. On the whole we get that right, the customer enjoysScotland, but there are 180 other countries involved in tourism, desperate for the same market, so wecannot stand still. We must keep momentum up and keep polishing our brand.”

Hamish Grey, Chief Executive of the Scottish Golf Union, said: “The key to growing golf in Scotlandis getting the businesses, the clubs, right first and then we are more likely to get the visitor experienceright, and get customers having fun and then coming back for more. The pressures in the wider economyhave forced golf to look at the business from a customer’s perspective and we are now seeing positiveevidence of change in the Scottish golf industry.”

Global Trends Affecting Golf Development – travel and tourism

Delegates were shown statistics that illustrate a predicted global growth in middle class society over thenext 30 years and how this would create a travel and tourism opportunity for golf. “A growing middleclass will create consumer curiosity towards developing areas of the world, and as these areas becomesafer and more accessible, they will create viable travel and tourism destinations, and a real opportunityfor golf development,” commented KPMG’s Nick Oakley, who moderated the session.

Panellist, David DeSmith, Director of Marketing at Southworth Development, commented: “In a suc-cessful, emerging development of the future you will be selling memories. Having a great hotel, goodfood and excellent service will be a given. What will make new tourist destinations work will be the in-teractions visitors have while they are there.

“For future golf developments to succeed they need to move from an old one-way transactional rela-tionship to one that is friendship based and emotional. Golf development owners have to make visitsmore personally nourishing – the emotional response from customers is the one that will trigger peopleto return.”

The subject of sustainability also figured highly in many dis-cussions at the Golf Business Forum, with the Golf Environ-ment Organization’s Director of Programmes, Kelli Jerome, participating in the ‘Global Trends’ debate.

She added: “Golf has a major opportunity to show that it canconstruct courses for much less money, have them workingefficiently with what is naturally on the site, and then operatethem efficiently too. Golf has to ask itself how do you createa more sustainable development and how does it enhance so-ciety? A lot of the issues faced by the industry are perceptionproblems, but if we are going to come under pressure fromthe rising cost of resources, we need to address the issues.”

Game Changers: Shaping the Future of Golf

The final session of the Golf Business Forum welcomed industry heavyweights to the stage to debatecurrent issues influencing the game, the growth of the Asian golf market, how golf needs to change, and its inclusion in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

On the Asian market….

David Withers, President of Jacobsen Textron: “Golf ’s centre of gravity is shifting. America has alwaysdominated and is still the dominant force in world golf, but we are witnessing growth in the Asian mar-ket. The issue for the West is that we need to grow the game, but in China it is very different, they areat the beginning. Where middle classes develop, we will see more and more golf courses for the massesin China.”

On golf in The Olympic Games…

Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A: “It was made clear to us at the bidding stage that golf inthe Olympics had to be an event for the game’s top professionals. It was very important that the toplayers of the game supported the bid, which they did, and the players all made it clear that a 72-holeStrokeplay format was right. That is what has been proposed and accepted. Technically, this is still anopen point until the end of the year.”

On sponsorship in golf…

Giles Morgan, HSBC’s Global Head of Sponsorship and Events: “I don’t think golf has a reputationalproblem, but it does have to monitor its reputation all the time. We choose to sponsor events in golfrather than players, as we see individuals as too much of a risk.”

Introducing ‘Silver Surfers’ to golf…

Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of TheR&A: “There is just as much poten-tial to bring older people in, or back,to golf to boost numbers as there is tointroduce young people to the sport.I don’t regard it as a bad thing to getolder people playing golf. I can’t pre-tend I have a formula to do it, butclubs are under pressure to get mem-bers, and thinking differently in areassuch as this is an option.”

Golf ’s next big star…

Guy Kinnings, IMG Global Head of Golf: “What a star player can do to bring a country of potentialnew golfers to the game is incredible. If we take the Asia region as an example, TV revenues from golfhave been growing rapidly and if this interest brings hundreds of millions of new ‘eye balls’ to the gamethat can only be good. I am also convinced the next huge golf superstar will almost certainly come fromAsia.”

The Golf Business Forum also recognised twogreat leaders in the professional game, awardingboth George O’Grady CBE, Chief Executive ofThe European Tour, and Tim Finchem, PGATOUR Commissioner, with Lifetime Achieve-ment Awards for their services to golf.

Receiving his award, George O’Grady, said:“To be recognised here in Scotland is very spe-cial. I’m very humbled - it is hard to believe Ihave been in the game for 40 years.”

Tim Finchem added: “My award is recognitionfor our team, our players, our sponsors and ourtournaments on the PGA TOUR. If you standback and look at pro golf today, it is as healthyas it has ever been, the globe is getting smallerand we are all working together for the good ofthe game.”

The Golf Business Forum also heard from somegreats, including five-time Open Champion,Peter Thomson, former Secretary of the R&A,Sir Michael Bonallack, and one of Europe’sfinest golfers Colin Montgomerie, who joinedthe panel session discussing golf in Scotland.

ON TOUR WITH TANDI

Tandi on TourIn this edition of Tandi on Tour I will be discussing in detail about Game Statistics and the impor-

tance of knowing how to take your own game statistics, what the stats mean and then how to improve

your golf based on what the numbers reflect. One thing to note is that game statistics do not exclu-

sively apply to professional golfers and can in fact improve your golf game irrespective of your skill

level or handicap. By doing just ONE set of game statistics for a round, you can gain enough infor-

mation and insight from them to reduce your next round by at least 2 shots.

First things first, what are Game Statistics andwhat is all the fuss about? A great exampleof the importance of Game Stats can be

found in a fairly well known and current moviecalled: MoneyBall. The basic story line behind themovie focuses on the selection criteria of key play-ers for a baseball team based not on their pedigree, background, education or potential, but rather onwhat the numbers or statistics say about their per-formance. These numbers give crucial informationabout how and where to position these players sothat they can perform their best, even if it meansthat they play in position that they are not specif-ically trained for yet excel in. In the movie, theteam selected were not of the top pedigree or mosttalented but rather those most effective in each po-sition and this produced the longest winningstreak ever achieved in American Baseball historyby that team. Now, how this pert urns to golf isquite similar in that players, of any skill level, might spend all their practice time and energytraining an area of their game that, if fact, does notneed to be trained as it is a strength, and then neg-lect a key area that would drastically change theirscores and therefore their handicap.

Here is a basic format and explanation for keepingstatistics: (bearing in mind, you can make it as indepth or simple as you choose using any or all ofthe below categories)

Fairways in regulation (FIR): Get a total out of14 and then a percentage

Greens in regulation (GIR): Get a total out of 18and then a percentage

Putts per round (PPR): Get a total for the num-ber of putts made for the round. You can also notethe distance of putts made eg. 80% from 3 foot

Scrambling: (Sand saves, Up and Downs fromaround the green and pitch shots converted from100 meters and in) Mark off each time you play ascrambling shot and then get your percentage ofsaves.

Mental errors: This can be an interesting statisticand sometimes give you a better indication ofwhere your weaknesses are. Make a note each time

www.sagolftrader.co.zaJuly/August 2013 87

ON TOUR WITH TANDI

your routine is different from your usual ritual, ifyou have tension or anxiety while playing a shot, concentration errors etc.

Management errors: these refer to wrong club, shot selection or choice of strategy.

You can simply mark these on your score cardwhile you are playing your round using the

columns provided and then get your totals at theend. Once you have your totals for each area of thegame, your strengths and weaknesses will be ap-parent. The last two game stats, namely: Mentaland Management Errors are a more personal sta-tistic that you, the player will need to decide foryourself whether to mark them down and when.As mentioned earlier, these two areas can some-times be more telling about your golf score thanthe main statistics as they are predominantly men-tal faculties. The more disciplined you are in yourmental game and strategy, the lower these stats willbe and therefore so will your golf scores.

Below is an average in each department of theTop 10 players on the US PGA Tour:

FIR: 69.84 %

GIR: 69.62 %

PPR: 28.02

SCRAMBLING: 64.99%

The closer you can get your statistics to matchthese above, with minimal Mental and Manage-ment Errors, will then transform your golf gameand lower your handicap.

Paul Boshoff captured theLowveld Amateur Open titleat White River GC with a fourstroke victory.

The youngster finally pushed theloss aside, put his Italian experi-ence into practice and walked offthe White River Golf Clubcourse the Lowveld AmateurOpen champion.

Boshoff carded an opening 69 atthe par-71 layout and propelledhimself to his first provincialpodium finish with a flawless 65in the second round.

The Serengeti Golf & WildlifeEstate golfer finished four shotsclear of Stephan Potgieter andseven ahead of Justice Mashegoon a winning total of eight-under-par 134.

After seven birdies offset by fivebogeys in the first round, hisbogey-free ride in the secondround was courtesy of his week inItaly, where he finally understooda lesson his dad, Louis, had beentrying to teach him for years..

“My dad is always telling me toplay the course, not the player, but nine times out of 10 someonelike Haydn Porteous or ZanderLombard would be in the field,”Boshoff explained.

“Haydn and Zander are the toptwo amateurs in the country. Youreally want to beat them, so youforget about the course and youstart playing the player.

“I didn’t know anyone in Italy, ex-cept my friend and practice part-ner, Tristen Strydom. I didn’t

think about the other players. Iplayed the course and that’s whyI finished in the top 20 and madethe match play at an internationaltournament. I did the same atWhite River and it paid off.”

South Africa put in a great final round effort toclaim fifth at the 21st TOYOTA Junior GolfWorld Cup 2013, supported by JAL, whileVenezuela denied Australia the chance to makeit two-in-row at Tokyo’s Chukyo CC in Japan lastmonth.

After the team scored a disappointing five-over-par218 in the third round, the South Africans cameback strong with two under 211 to climb to fifth onseven-under-par 845.

Mpumalanga’s Thriston Lawrence, who once againanchored the team with a two under 69, was sup-ported by a 70 from Ekurhuleni’s Jason Fronemanand a 72 from Gauteng North’s James du Preez. Al-though Triston Strydom from Gauteng Northcarded the non-counting score, he neverthelesssigned for a 74, his best round of the championship.

Meanwhile Australia, who trailed by just one shotat the start of the final round, also combined for a

final round two-under-par 211. However, the

overnight leaders came home with the same tally and

managed to sneak a one stroke victory on 16-under-

par 836.

This was the first time Venezuela lifted the Junior

World Cup trophy and only the second time a

South American country tasted victory, with Ar-

gentina winning in 2009.

“We had some rain again and the wet conditions un-

derfoot made scoring tough, but our team did really

well to finish the tournament in fifth place.” said SA

As expected, Gauteng North A took early control ofthe championship with an opening 145. The triopiled on the pressure with a second round 146 and142 in the third and extended their advantage totake a 16 shot lead going into the final round.

LAUGH OUT LOUD

Answers: Ball 1, Louise Suggs

www.sagolftrader.co.za July/August 201396

Can you stop this golfer ?

One night a man returns home

well after dark after having sup-

posedly left at 6:30 that morning

to play golf. His wife is furious

and demands to know where he's

been.

“Well, I got up this morning at

6:30, went to the car and it

wouldn't start. So I called Frank

to drive and it was 7:15 until he

could pick me up. On our way to

the course, Frank gets a flat tire so

we have to walk 8 miles to the

nearest station to get someone to

help us. By the time we finally get

going again it's 10:30. When we

get to the course, there is a seniors

group going off so we have to

wait two hours before we can tee

off.”

“Yeah, but that was still almost

eleven hours ago!” His wife

nagged.

“Well, we were playing along

when on the fifth hole a golf ball

comes whizzing by and strikes

Frank in the head, killing him. So

for the next thirteen holes, its hit

the ball, drag Frank, hit the ball,

drag Frank, hit the ball...”

A Golfer's nightmare

One day Steve and his wife, Sor-

rell were out playing golf. Every-

thing was going fairly well for

Steve until the 7th hole. He sliced

his tee shot a mile to the right so

he and his wife had to go looking

for the ball. Eventually they came

across a shed with the door

slightly ajar, and surprisingly

enough the golf ball was slap

bang in the centre of the floor.

And so, not wanting to drop a

shot, Steve decided to play on in-

stead of taking a penalty by drop-

ping the ball. Sorrell, noticing

that if Steve played a good shot

he could get his ball on the green,

offered to hold the door open

while her husband played the

shot. After a lengthy period of siz-

ing up his shot, Steve hit the ball,

but struck his wife in the temple

with it. She slumped down dead,

instantly.

Another 5 years later, Steve found

himself on the same golf course,

on the same hole, this time with

his friend, Jim. So, coincidently,

Steve's tee shot took the exact

same path as it did 5 years ago,

and the ball found itself, again,

slap bang in the centre of the

shed. As Steve thought seriously

what to do with his shot, Jim of-

fered to hold the door of the shed

open so he could take his shot.

But with a look of shock on his

face, Steve replied instantly,

“Hell No!!! The last time I tried

that it took me 7 shots to get on

the green.”

Handicap

Two men were out playing a

game of golf. One of them was

teeing off at the third hole, when

a gourgeous naked lady ran past.

Naturally this distracted him

somewhat, but the true wannabe

pro that he was, he bent back to

themuch more important task at

hand. As he was about to hit the

shot again, two men in white

coats ran past. This was of course

less of a distraction, so it was only

a few seconds before he was ready

again. Surprise surprise, he was

again distracted by a third man,

running by in a white coat, but

this man was carrying two buck-

ets of sand.

Eventually, he was ready again,

and took his shot. As he was

walking down the fairway, he

asked his companion what he

thought had been going on. His

companion knew and told him:

“Well that lady, once a week,

manages to escape from the loony

bin beside the course, tears off her

clothes and runs across the fair-

ways. The three guys you saw

were the nurses. They have a race

to see which can catch her first,

and the winner gets to carry her

back.”

“What about the bucket of

sand?”

“Well, that guy won last week,

the buckets of sand are his hand-

icap.”

Great Trade?

Two golfers are at the first tee:

Golfer one: “Hey, guess what! I

got a set of golf clubs for my

wife!”

Golfer two: “that was a fantastic

trade!!!!”
