Mission:

On Mission for the Church Alive! -

Moving Forward…

Soon we will begin the process of choosing a new

parish name for the par ish grouping of Saint

Alphonsus and Saint Alexis. This is one of the important

steps we take as we draw closer to our merger date in

July, 2020. Be assured that we will be asking

parishioners for their input. There are however,

guidelines set forth by the diocese for names that

groupings are permitted to use. This information will be

made available to all parishioners. If you have not

already begun to do so, please pray to the Holy Spirit to

guide you and the members of our community in this

process. Prayer and openness are key to our lives and

certainly this endeavor.

Along with parish leadership and staff, I am

committed to sharing with you all the steps that are

necessary for our official target date in nine months.

Soon this information will be available along with the

timeline for the merger process which will include a

month to month schedule of all that we need to do.

Lastly, in regard to the financial status of the two

parishes, I look forward to having the end of the year

reports made available to parishioners in the near future.

These are being prepared by staff and members of the

respective Finance Councils. An overview will be

presented at weekend Masses at a future date. A word of

gratitude to the many generous benefactors of our

community – Thank you! Keep in mind that generosity

has not so much to do with the amount of one’s gift, but

the size of one’s sacrifice. The poor widow in scripture

who paid the temple offering continues to serve as a

model of generosity for all of us. Thank you again!

Maintenance:

Mark Your Calendar

The annual Saint Alexis Day of Caring/Fall Clean-up

is scheduled for next Saturday, October 26 following the

8:00 a.m. Mass and will continue throughout the day. We

need your help! Join us in caring for what has been

entrusted to our care. This semi-annual event promises to

be rewarding; working with fellow parishioners and the

satisfaction of what we are able to accomplish together.

This year, we hope to remove seasonal flowers and

provide a general winterization of the grounds. We also

need a few volunteers to pick up supplies beforehand and

to provide hospitality in the serving of lunch. All

individuals and family members are welcome! We can use a pick-up truck or two, steel rakes, gas

weed wackers, straight-edge shovels and gardening tools

in general. Any amount of time you can give will be

most appreciated! Please RSVP by calling the Par ish

Center at 724.935.4343, ext. 221 so that we can gauge the

scope of projects and have an adequate amount of

refreshments available for our guests.

In the event of rain, we will convene at the same time

on Saturday, November 2. Thank you for your assistance

and practice of good stewardship!

Why Not?

The Day of Caring/Fall

Clean-up has been an annual

tradition at Saint Alexis for

more than twenty years. Like

the Annual Day of Caring/

Spring-Clean-up, it gives

parishioners and friends of the parish an opportunity to

come together and care for our second home, the church

and parish grounds. In reading the article in the bulletin

about this event, a parishioner at Saint Alphonsus asked if

we offer the same opportunity for parishioners and friends

at Saint Alphonsus. After all, most parishioners love their

spiritual home and are willing to take care of it in

practicing good stewardship, using our time, talent and

treasure in relation to God.

Therefore, I am happy to announce that a Day of

Caring/Fall Clean-up is being scheduled at Saint

Alphonsus for Saturday, November 2 from 9:00 a.m. to

whenever. All are welcomed to par ticipate!

Refreshments and lunch will be offered. Come, and join

old friends and make some new ones as we accomplish a

few tasks and share the pride of working together for the

glory of God.

Any amount of time you can give will be most

appreciated! Even one hour can make a big difference.

Please RSVP by calling the Par ish Center at

724.935.1151 ext. 210, so that we gauge the scope of

projects and have an adequate amount of refreshments

available for our guests.

In the event of rain, we will convene at the same time

on Saturday, November 9. Thank you for your prayers

and assistance as we care for what the Lord has

entrusted to our care!

FROM FATHER ZYWAN

In Jesus’ love,

Fr. Zywan

Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis News Evangelization Principle 3: Know the Gospel Message

By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization Here is a crazy scenario I want you to consider: Imagine you were

standing outside of a hospital, and you had a t-shirt on that says, “I’m a Christian.” When all of a sudden, someone comes out of the hospital and says, “I see that you’re a Christian, and I was just told by the doctors I only have five minutes to live. Can you tell me what I need to know to go to heaven? ” Now, of course, this is an extremely unlikely scenario, but would you be able to respond? Do you know the Gospel message well enough to answer the person's question? You might be surprised.

In most cases, evangelization takes place in a long-term trusting relationship, but we still need to know the Gospel well enough to express it when required. The truth is most of us just do not know it well enough. Hearing, believing, and being transformed by the Gospel is how we are saved. It is incredibly vital that we not only know it a little, but that we know every letter and punctuation mark.

It is time to get to know the Gospel intimately. In a very short time, you can understand the great story of Jesus well by spending just ten minutes a day prayerfully reading the Gospels. Read them in order and take about a few chapters at a time. When you finish all four Gospels, just start over. Before long, you will be ready to share the great story of Jesus with anyone at any time.

back of church for collection of the food.

Thank you for your participation!

Help Needed For The Catholic

Community of Wexford Welcome

Committee Ministry

The Welcome Committee Ministry

welcomes new parishioners to the

Catholic Community of Wexford for

both Saint Alexis and Saint Alphonsus

parishes. Due to an influx of newly

registered parishioners, we are looking to

expand our committee. (This is a good

problem to have!!) We are in search of 4 to 8 additional

members from Saint Alphonsus parish. Currently, there are

only two members from Saint Alphonsus involved in this

ministry. The time commitment would include helping host

a quarterly Welcome Luncheon (a combined Saint Alexis/

Saint Alphonsus event), as well as reaching out to newly

registered parishioners. Our next luncheon is scheduled for

Sunday, October 27. This ministry DOES NOT include

Hospitality/Fellowship Sundays.

If you are interested in becoming involved in this

important ministry, please contact Leslie Mitros at

[email protected].

ASCEND Happenings

Men’s Retreat Group Social

The combined Men's retreat groups of Saint Alexis

and Saint Alphonsus are hosting a social on Sunday,

November 3. Meet new fr iends as we watch the

Steelers come alive against the Colts at 1:00 p.m.!

Let us all cheer or moan but most of all, get to know each

other. Food and beverages will be served.

Please contact Ed Thomas ([email protected]) or

Mark Prybyl ([email protected]) for details and let

us know the number of people coming.

Bethlehem Haven Needs You!

Volunteer opportunity available! We are looking for more parishioners who would like to join our outreach ministry. Our committee prepares and serves dinner on the second Saturday of each month to the homeless women of Bethlehem Haven’s permanent supportive housing shelter in Uptown Pittsburgh. Please consider cooking part of a meal to donate, providing meal items (such as beverages or bread), driving the food to the shelter or serving the meal and visiting with the women -- or volunteer to do a combination of these options. Dinner is provided for up to 26 women at 5 p.m. New members are welcome at any time. Servers must be female and at least 16 years old. Other opportunities with this ministry are open to everyone. We also support school, scouting and other group projects such as providing homemade cards and gifts, table and seasonal decorations or collecting toiletries or other items found on the shelter’s website wish list: https://www.bethlehemhaven.org. To sign up to help, please go www.tinyurl.com/bethhaven

Marchell Palguta chairs the Bethlehem Haven ministry and coordinates the dinners each month. You can reach her at [email protected].

Reflect. Renew. Retreat.

Is the busyness of life stressing you? Have you ever felt the need to get away to clear your head? If the answer is yes, consider attending an upcoming Emmaus Weekend. You will meet people like you who are also grappling with life’s big questions. You will have a chance to reflect and renew, worship and praise. The weekend is coordinated by lay people who will not try to convince or preach to you. Instead, they will share experiences and let you draw your own conclusions. The connections made at these weekends can supercharge your personal and spiritual life. If you have been putting this off, what are you waiting for? The women’s weekend will be held October 26-28 at the Kearns Spirituality Center in Allison Park. The men’s weekend will be held on December 6-8 at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Pittsburgh. Both retreats take place in a relaxed atmosphere, minutes from home. Private rooms and food are provided. For information, contact parishioner Mike Cappelli at 412.352.7631 or Jodie King at 412.429.1573. Visit www.PittsburghEmmaus.com.

Blessed Francis Seelos Academy Celebrating Blessed Francis Seelos

The feast day of Blessed

Francis Seelos (October 5) was

on a Saturday, so the Seelos

Academy community

celebrated their namesake

during Mass on Wednesday,

October 9 and prayed for his

canonization. The student

liturgical instrumentalists, the

choir, (led by two eighth grade

students), and the lectors and

gift bearers from third grade

helped to make the Mass a beautiful celebration. Father

Zywan presided.

Blessing of Pets

After a school Mass on October 4, students and their

furry companions gathered outside on a beautiful fall day

for a special blessing for pets to celebrate the Feast of Saint

Francis.

Random Acts of Kindness

The newly formed Seelos Academy Random Acts Of

Reflect on the relationship with Mary

In our hectic day and time, St. Pope John Paul II and St. Mother Teresa knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary. Join us on Monday, November 4 as we begin a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration. For six weeks, we’ll individually read about and reflect on the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary, coming together weekly to discuss our insights and progress. Videos featuring Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, bring our individual reflections and group experience into a clear and livable focus. Sessions run from 7:00 p.m. to

8:30 p.m. in room 215 of St. Cather ine of Sweden Parish. After the November 4 session, classes will continue Tuesdays, November 12 through December 10. The cost for the program is $25; with some scholarship funds available to the truly needy. To register or to request more information, contact Will Reaves at [email protected].
