FROM FATHER ZYWAN

NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

National Catholic Schools Week begins today, January 26 and runs through

February 1. This year ’s theme is, “Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead,

Succeed!” The focus is on the important spiritual, academic, and social

contributions provided by a Catholic education firmly rooted in the Gospel.

Bishop Michael Barber, SJ of the Oakland Diocese recently wrote, “Young

people today need Catholic education more than ever. In a world where truth,

beauty and goodness are considered all but subjective, the Way, Truth and Life

offered in Jesus Christ are our only source of direction, clarity and hope.

Furthermore, being rooted in faith does not endanger the academic quality of

Catholic schools, but in fact is there very motivation for excellence in all things.

Father Joe and I have both felt blessed to be serving at a parish where Catholic education is valued and promoted.

As host campuses to Blessed Francis Seelos Academy, we see each day the difference Catholic education makes as we

collaborate and support parents - the first teachers of their children in the ways of God. What a privilege to be a part of

our young people’s formation as disciples of Jesus. Sure, all schools teach. But Catholic schools teach in a faith-based

environment and I firmly believe that this singular factor makes all the difference in the world.

Special thanks to the families and benefactors who so generously sacrifice and support the mission of Catholic

education in our community. With the recent mergers of individual parish schools in order to form regional programs,

we can now say that every parish has a Catholic school! By combining our resources, we want to ensure that Catholic

schools remain viable and affordable to all families long into the future.

In all that we do, let Jesus be praised as we recognize the difference He makes not just in our schools, but more

importantly, in our homes and communities. Our children today will become the leaders of tomorrow. We appreciate

all who share with us in this holy mission. May you recognize the real difference that you are helping to make. For more information about Blessed Francis Seelos Academy and Catholic education in our area, please visit us at nhrces.org.

A PURPOSE WORTH MARCHING FOR!

A BIG thank you to the parishioners of Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis

parishes who took part in the 47th Annual March for Life in Washington D.C. this

past Friday (January 24). The day began with celebrating the Holy Mass prior to

journeying to our nation’s capitol. Before the march actually began, we were

encouraged by a handful of nationally recognized pro-life speakers on the National

Mall. Following the march, we boarded the buses and began our return home.

It was an amazing experience to walk and pray with thousands of witnesses to

the Gospel of Life from across the nation and around the world! It is always such a

great sign of hope to so many young people in attendance. They seem to grasp the

gravity of this issue unlike ours and previous generations. Millions of children, mothers, and fathers have been the

victim of this lie that has largely contributed to the culture of death. I pray that with the growing numbers of

participants, one day we will no longer have to make this journey because the sacredness of every human life from the

moment of conception to natural death will be recognized, respected, and defended. Science has already made this

argument abundantly clear.

Continue to pray, learn, and advocate for the Right to Life. Thanks too, to the generous benefactors who

largely underwrote much of the expenses allowing us to charter two buses this year. Please continue to do all that you

can to support the prolife movement by prayer and sacrifice. Our works are not heroic, we are simply doing what the

Lord asks of us, and that is to live the Gospel and share the Good News!

PRAISE HIM . . .

“This is the wonderful truth, my dear friends: the Word, which became flesh two thousand years ago is present today in the Eucharist.”

Saint John Paul II

MAY THEY REST IN PEACE

The Catholic Community of

Wexford wishes to extend sympathy to

those who mourn the loss of a loved

one, especially the souls who recently

passed through death:

Claire Spengler (89); and Virginia A.

“Ginny” Musher (73), wife of

Dennis.

May the choirs of angels welcome them and where

Lazarus is poor no longer, may they find eternal rest.

JESUS TO GENESIS BIBLE STUDY

What is the Bible, where

does it come from, and what

is its purpose? How are

Catholics supposed to read

the Bible and what story does

it tell? These are the ever-

important questions answered

in Genesis to Jesus, the

newest journey through

scripture video from the Saint

Paul Center.

Join us to learn the basic

Catholic principles for

reading Scripture and to

survey the broad outline of the books of the Bible and

their place in the story of salvation. Genesis to Jesus

bible study will be held (12-weeks) on Wednesdays,

March 4 through May 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

at Saint Alexis Education Center, Room 112. For more

WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE

This year, the World Day for Consecrated Life is celebrated in the Church on February 1. Our parish will celebrate on the weekend of February 1-2. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their

special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation.

ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER?

From time to time we come across situations where people feel they are registered parishioners because they attend Mass here or have been attending since they were children, but no longer live with their parents. If you have not filled out a registration form and do not receive monthly envelopes through the mail, we may not have a record of you attending church. Consequently when you want to be married, have your child baptized, or are in need of a sponsor letter, we will not know if you are a registered member. PLEASE NOTE: We do not give sponsor or permission letters to people that are not registered, even though all Sacraments may have been made here. Adult children should register independently. Newly married couples should fill out a registration form with their new address, etc. Please go to the website and fill out the form to register at either parish or call the parish office at 724.935.1151 ext. 210 or 724.935.4343 ext. 221, if you have any questions.

Kim McCosby, participated in the Crazy Creatures creative writing contest. Crazy Creatures is a fun

way to engage students with creative writing by challenging them to write a story in just 100 words.

The students enjoyed creating a crazy creature and wrote a mini saga inspired by their creations. Nine students had

their work published: Jack Davidson, Katie Gunther, Thorben Klueber, JJ McCabe, Lily Narvett, Spencer

Pascarella, Catarina Perri, Darren Riley, and Madeline Sell.
