In last week’s Gospel from Mark, we heard the call of the first disciples, and today those new disciples were with Jesus on the Sabbath as he entered the synagogue and taught. While Mark does not record what

Jesus taught at this particular time, he does tell us the reaction to it: The people were aston-ished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. This moment is followed by Jesus’ expulsion of an unclean spirit from a man, and Jesus’ inter-action with the demon is telling. Jesus recognizes the demon as the very antithesis of the king-dom of God and the demon recognizes Jesus as the Holy One of God. While the demon taunts Jesus, Jesus silences the demon in response and orders him to come out of the man. Once more, the people are affected: they are amazed and question one another as to what is happening. Writing for a community suffering under the oppressive regime and power of imperial Rome, Mark encourages his listeners by reminding them of Jesus’ power and promises. 2000 years lat-er, we too are challenged by our own demons, personal and communal. We desire words of encouragement and a reminder that Jesus is the Holy One who liberates us and cares for us with true compassion. Today's Gospel serves as our reminder of this, only the power of Christ's love can set us free. In Matthew Kelly's book "Perfectly Yourself" pg. 34-39, he talks about Our Desire to Please, and how this can be good and lead us into God's Kingdom, or it can be bad and lead us into un-healthy situations. Much like what must have led to this man being demon possessed. The key is what lies behind our motives? Often we can simply look at our emotions to discern what path we should follow. Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians today can be of help in this as well when he says, Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. Most, if not all of us, would agree with him! Writing for a community that expected the Second Coming to happen imminently, Paul is communicating a message of hope. He is telling them the circumstances and conditions of earthly existence (being married or unmarried in this case) are important, but they are of less significance than the new life we are all called to in Christ. In other words, he reinforces for them – and therefore for us – the transitory nature of this life. As such, our state in life should be of less concern than our state in the kingdom. Wherever we find ourselves, we are to answer God’s call and follow the Lord without distraction. Paul’s message of hope, along with Mark’s encouraging message of Jesus’ power and prom-ises, are a reminder the Holy One of God has liberated us from death and sin – the difficulties and trials of this life are, in the end, overcome. We have certainty that with faith in the risen Lord, we are destined for an eternity with him. In this life a certainty that our God is always with us, for we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.

Flu and Cold Season Guidelines and the Mass

With the arrival of cold and flu season, concerns nat-urally are raised about health and well-being of our parishioners and visitors. Common sense and basic hygiene is the best way to limit the spread of flu and colds. The following guidelines, written by our Liturgy Committee, in conjunction with the Diocese of Or-ange and our clergy may also be helpful in the pre-vention of further spread of the flu and colds. • In Christian charity, if you are sick, stay home. It is

not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick or taking care of someone who is sick. Stay home and return to Church when you are well and please know of our prayers for your quick recov-ery.

• During the Sign of Peace, if a person is feeling ill, has flu-like symptoms, or simply does not want to shake hands, he or she can make a simpler ges-ture such as a smile or a bow of the head with the words "The peace of the Lord be with you" to show the mutual charity celebrated in this part of the liturgy.

• It is an individual’s decision whether or not to re-ceive the Body and Blood of Christ under both species. Christ is truly and completely present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. While the fullness of the sacra-mental sign of Eucharistic communion is exempli-fied when both the sacramental signs of bread and wine are received, you are not obligated to receive from the cup.

Again, to stop the transmission of the flu or colds, if you feel sick, please stay home and come back when you feel better. We thank you for your coop-eration during this serious time. May our loving God always bless you and your fami-ly with good health, Fr. Dave

What does it mean to be a sponsor? The whole community prays for and supports the catechumens and candidates, but it is difficult for a large group to minister personally to each person. As a sponsor you are the personal representative of the church to the catechumen or candidate. As a sponsor you will help the individual feel at home among Catholics. You will introduce the cat-echumen or candidate to other parishioners, activities of the church and to the organizations of the community. You will also serve as a companion and guide, making yourself available for support, understand-ing and comfort. As a guide you have to remind yourself this journey of faith does not entirely de-pend on you. The Spirit is the first and most effective guide in the process. Sponsors are mentors. Yes, we are all mentors and the catechumens and candidates learn what being a Catholic Christian is about from many people, but mostly from their sponsors. Please consider being a companion, guide, and mentor for one of our catechumens or candi-dates. Pray the following prayer in your discernment: Lord, grant that I may be attentive to your presence and generous in responding to what you ask of me. Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God, my Savior, and for you I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:50)
