SAINT ANNE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH BRISTOL, VIRGINIA August 13, 2017 Remember St. Anne’s in your Will and Trusts
When we gather each Sunday, we know where we will find
God: in each other, in the Word proclaimed, in the Blessed
Sacrament. Our readings today will challenge us to find
God in other places and at other times in our lives. Perhaps
as we continue our celebration today, our prayer can be for
the vision to see and hear God in our lives outside this
sacred place.
Readings for this Week (August 14-19)
Monday: Deut. 10:12-22; Matthew 17:22-27
Tuesday: Rev. 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab
1 Cor. 15:20-27; Luke 1:39-56
Wednesday: Deut. 34:1-12; Matthew 18:15-20
Thursday: Joshua 3:7-1a, 11, 13-17; Mt. 18:21—19:1
Friday: Joshua 24:1-13; Matthew 19:3-12

Scripture for next Sunday (20th Sunday/Ordinary Time)
Isaiah 56:6-7
The Lord brings foreigners into his house of prayer.
Romans 11:13-15, 29-32
The call of God is irrevocable.
Matthew 15:21-28
Great is the faith of the Canaanite woman.
The Canaanite woman of next Sunday’s Gospel, desperate
for the healing of her daughter, breaks through social and
political barriers, even challenging Jesus as she seeks relief
for her child. By responding to her faith, Jesus shows us
how his mission to the world continues to become broader
and wider in its outreach to the world. As we listen to
God’s holy word next weekend, let us examine the
boundaries that we set, and listen for God’s challenge to us
to break them down.
WELCOME BACK DEACON JAMES!
This weekend we are very happy to welcome back to
Saint Anne’s Deacon James O’Reilly who will be with

note: this is a change of our regularly scheduled
meeting date due to vacation schedules.
Small Prayer Groups being formed now! As we come to the completion of our OREMUS study,
small prayer groups are being formed to continue our
growing understanding and experience of prayer.
Would you like to get together with a small group of
friends to pray together? Our groups will be formed to
meet the needs of the participants — your group may
choose to meet once a week or your group may choose
to meet once a month — it’s flexible. You might
come together and pray or you may choose to add a
book on prayer or study materials on prayer. The
group can be designed to meet the needs and desires of
the group. The important thing is that we continue to
pray together! The first group is being formed now. It
will meet on Monday evenings at the St. Vincent de
Paul Center 6pm-7pm. This group will meet every
other Monday beginning August 14. Give it a try —
come out to pray with fellow parishioners. Clint Smith
will lead the Monday evening group.
If you would like to host a small prayer group in your
home, please let Sydney know at sydneyfarnum@
stannes-bristol.org or call 276-669-8200 ext. 32. More
groups will be formed as we recruit leaders.
Remember… you don’t have to be a “theologian” to
host a prayer group—just a heart that loves the Lord
and wants to pray with others.

POPE FRANCIS— “Five Finger Prayer”
1. The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start
praying for those who are closest to you. They are
the persons easiest to remember. To pray for our
dear ones is a “Sweet Obligation”.
2. The next finger is the index. Pray for those who
teach you, instruct you and heal you. They need
the support and wisdom to show direction to
others. Always keep them in your prayers.
3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of
our leaders — those who have authority. They
need God’s guidance.
4. The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it
may surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It
should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick
or those plagues by problems. They need your
prayers.
5. And finally we have our smallest finger the
smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to
pray for yourself When you are done praying for
the other four groups, you will be able to see your
own needs but in the proper perspective, and also
you will be able to pray for your own needs in a
better way.
