HOLY COMMUNION M ATTHEW ,  A POSTLE & E VANGELIST

Sunday, September 21, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.

FOLLOW ME  Tax collectors were agents of the oppressive empire, and they also had a reputation for extorting morethan they had to collect. Jesus' calling Matthew to follow him showed that Jesus not only associatedwith "bad guys," he welcomed them into his inner circle. His sharing a meal with Matthew and othertax collectors and "sinners" was an enacted parable of the mercy of God. The meal we share at Jesus'table is to be such a parable too.

your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

WORD  God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching

The FIRST READING  Ezekiel 2:8—3:11Following the call of the prophet to speak the word of God, this passage relates in vivid imagery the

need to consume the word until it is fully assimilated by the prophet.Chapter 2 8But you, mortal, hear what I say to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious

house; open your mouth and eat what I give you. 9I looked, and a hand was

stretched out to me, and a written scroll was in it. 10He spread it before me; it had

writing on the front and on the back, and written on it were words of lamentation

and mourning and woe.

8 M ATTHEW ,  A POSTLE & E VANGELIST

Chapter 3

He said to me, O mortal, eat what is offered to you; eat this scroll, and go, speak to

the house of Israel. 2So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. 3He

said to me, Mortal, eat this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it. ThenI ate it; and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.4He said to me: Mortal, go to the house of Israel and speak my very words to them.5For you are not sent to a people of obscure speech and difficult language, but to

the house of Israel — 6not to many peoples of obscure speech and difficult

language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I sent you to them, they

would listen to you. 7But the house of Israel will not listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me; because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a

stubborn heart. 8See, I have made your face hard against their faces, and your

forehead hard against their foreheads. 9Like the hardest stone, harder than flint, I

have made your forehead; do not fear them or be dismayed at their looks, for they

are a rebellious house. 10He said to me: Mortal, all my words that I shall speak to

you receive in your heart and hear with your ears; 11then go to the exiles, to yourpeople, and speak to them. Say to them, "Thus says the Lord GOD"; whether they

hear or refuse to hear.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

The PSALMODY   Psalm 119:33–40 After organ introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. Theassembly sings the refrain.

33Teach me, O LORD, the way | of your statutes, and I shall keep it | to the end.

34Give me understanding, and I shall | keep your teaching;I shall keep it with | all my heart.

35Lead me in the path of | your commandments, for that is | my desire.

36Incline my heart to | your decreesand not to | unjust gain. Refrain

37Turn my eyes from be- | holding falsehood;give me life | in your way.

38Fulfill your promise | to your servant, which is for | those who fear you.

39Turn away the reproach | that I dread, because your judg- | ments are good.

40Behold, I long for | your commandments;by your righteousness en- | liven me. Refrain

The SECOND READING  Ephesians 2:4–10The author of this letter is eager to show God's love for sinners. God reaches into the deathly snare ofsin and death in order to draw us out into life with Christ. This act is nothing less than the gift ofGod's mercy.

4But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ —

by grace you have been saved —6

and raised us up with him and seated us withhim in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come he mightshow the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; itis the gift of God — 9not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are

what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God preparedbeforehand to be our way of life.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel as it is proclaimed in the midst of the assembly. Please follow the Cross of Christ as the following is sung:

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL  Matthew 9:9–13Regarded as a traitor to his people and an oppressor of the poor, this tax collector follows Jesus andthen offers him hospitality. In the sharing of a meal Jesus reveals his mission: to serve God's mercy.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy +1

Gospel according to Matthew.Glory to you, O Lord.

9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth;and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him.10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and

were sitting with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to

his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

12

But when he heard this, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, butthose who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

The reading concludes:

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated after the procession moves to the front.

The CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

The SERMON

Silence for reflection.

The HYMN OF THE DAY By All Your Saints (v. 1, 20 and last)

1 Using the thumb, the people may make three small signs of the cross, one on the forehead, one on the lips, and one on the breast whilesilently using the traditional prayer, “May the Good News of Jesus Christ be in my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart. Amen”

M ATTHEW ,  A POSTLE & E VANGELIST  11

The CREED With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made.

12 M ATTHEW ,  A POSTLE & E VANGELIST

For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven;by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate2 from the virgin Mary, and was

made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

The assembly may remain standing or kneel. The PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Like Matthew we have heard the invitation to follow Jesus. As God’scommunity in this place let us pray for the Church, the world, and all thosein need.

 After each petition.

Lord, in your mercy.hear our prayer.

The prayers concludeInto your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in

your mercy, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

2 Martin Luther, in his Commentary on the Gospel of John encouraged the continuation of the ancient tradition of bowing during this

portion of the Creed until “For our sake…” because “the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, and

to thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation.” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 22, pp. 102, 105)

The LORD’S PRAYER (1789)Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

The BREAKING OF THE BREAD This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are we whoare called to his supper.Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall behealed.

The assembly is seated

The DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returningalong the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ.
