The Parish Community of
St. Matthew the Apostle
“The truth can’t be changed to match your feelings. Adjust your feelings to match the Truth!”
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 4, 2021
Mission Statement: St. Matthew the Apostle Church is a diverse Roman Catholic community empowered by the Spirit of God, formed by His Word, and nourished by the Eucharist. We are called to bear witness to the Gospel through stewardship, hospitality, and service. Parish Membership: Membership in our parish is open to all Catholics who reside within our borders as well as others who wish to worship with us and support our mission. All adult Catholics should officially register as members of the parish in which they reside. Registration is a condition for admission to our Religious Formation program and reception of the Sacraments of Bap-tism, First Penance, First Eucharist, Confirmation and Marriage. Being registered for at least one month as an active parishioner is required before we can testify to your eligibility to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. Young adults over the age of 21 should register independently of their parents.

GODPARENT / CONFIRMATION SPONSOR LETTERS Church law mandates that a sponsor for baptism and confirmation be an active Confirmed Catholic. An active Catholic is a parishioner who is registered, attends Mass weekly, contributes to the support of the church, is in a valid Catholic marriage (if married), and publicly leads a life compatible with Church teaching. We can only write letters of eligibility for parishioners who meet these criteria. Mass attendance is normally confirmed by envelope use. If you don’t use envelopes, the office will provide a form that you need to have signed by a parish priest for several consecutive weeks before a sponsorship letter can be written. Call the office for more information. PRE-BAPTISM A mandatory Pre-Baptism instruction class is scheduled once a month. Please call the parish office at 732-985-5063 to register. BAPTISM Baptism is normally celebrated on the second Saturday of each month at 12:15 PM. Baptisms are not celebrated during Lent. To arrange for Baptisms please call the parish office at 732-985-5063. RELIGIOUS FORMATION (CCD) If you are new to the parish and wish to enroll your child in the Religious Formation Program, please call the Office of Religious Formation at 732-985-5063. Office hours: Monday - Friday, 1:30 - 4:30 PM. RCIA Adults wishing to become Roman Catholic or receive First Eucharist and/or Confirmation should contact the Parish Office for information on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. MARRIAGE Marriage arrangements should be made one year in advance and prior to any social plans. Contact the Parish Office for all pre-marriage information. MINISTRY TO THE SICK or HOMEBOUND Our Priests, Deacons and Eucharistic Ministers visit and bring Communion to homebound parishioners or those in JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates nursing home. Contact the Parish Office to arrange such visits. To contact a priest in a genuine emergency involving the sick or dying, call the rectory office. After business hours dial the parish emergency line at 732-735-9570. ST. MATTHEW PRAYER CHAIN Call Tom or Pat Krosnowski at 609-586-2320 with your request or email it to [email protected] & it will be sent to a group of people who will pray immediately. All requests will be confidential and will remain on the prayer list until you ask for them to be removed. MASS INTENTIONS Contact the Parish Office to schedule a Mass for our beloved deceased. MUSIC MINISTRY For information regarding our Adult Choir, Children’s Choir, Middle Choir, Youth Choir or Hand Bell Choir, contact the Parish Office at 732-985-5063. PARISH ORGANIZATION FUNDRAISERS Groups are permitted to run and schedule fundraisers which have happened in the prior year. New fundraisers or significant changes to prior fundraisers (or restarting ones from over a year ago) require permission from the pastor.
STEWARDSHIP God invites all people to be good stewards of the gifts and talents he has entrusted to us. All parishioners are urged to give a weekly pre-planned generous contribution based on a percent-age of their income. Please use the church envelope system. ST. MATTHEW’S CARNIVAL IN AUGUST GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY! Our parish carnival is scheduled for August 25-28, 2021. 4 days, Wednesday through aturday. As always, we need your help both in volunteering, spreading the word to the neighborhood, and coming as patrons for a family night out. We antici-pate most things being the same as in the past - same place, just different dates. Who knows, the warmer weather might be better both in enjoyment and in reve-nue! Put the dates in your calendar today! Our parish al-ways comes through to make this event a success.
NOTE: There are many Masses available in July through the end of the year. Call or visit the parish office for more information.
ELECTRONIC GIVING Many parishioners recognize the convenience of donating to our church electronically. It beats writing out a check every week! Most parishioners who do give electronical-ly still use envelopes: simply check the “I have given electronically” box on the envelopes to ensure your dona-tion is tabulated properly (it should be anyway through our electronic system). See the website for more infor-mation.

FEAST OF FAITH Little Mysteries Two small rites—or, as one liturgist has called them, “little mysteries”—accompany the preparation of the gifts. The priest or deacon takes a small cruet of water from the server and adds a drop of water to the wine. Then, after the elevation of the chalice (and the incensa-tion, if incense is used), the priest washes his hands. Both of these actions were at first practical, matter-of-fact real-ities: in the ancient world the wine was usually quite thick, and was generally mixed with water before it was drunk. And in the early church, when the faithful brought forward a great variety of gifts at this time, there was a definite need for the presider to wash his hands! But now these rites serve a purely symbolic func-tion. The mingling of the water and wine is accompa-nied by a prayer that speaks of the wonderful exchange of the Mass, the mingling of Christ’s divinity and our humanity. And as the priest washes his hands, he prays words of supplication from Psalm 51, acknowledging his own sinfulness in the presence of the assembly be-fore he dares to approach the altar for this most sacred action. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

(CCD) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION IS OPEN Thanks to Deacon Ed, we now have the ability to accept registration and payment online! Religious formation is a re-quirement for children to receive the sacraments. Aside from learning about our faith, religious formation also helps to establish a healthy prayer life. Please go to https://www.stmatthewtheapostle.com/religious-formation-ccd If you prefer, you can print the registration form and bring a check to the rectory during office hours. We fully intend for classes to be In person again in the fall. We had to adjust our class meeting times and reduce the number of classes (fewer children, fewer catechists). Please note our new schedule: Grades 1-4 will meet on Tuesday from 4:15-5:30 Grades 5-8 will meet on Thursday from 6:00 – 7:15 Registration ends on August 1. Also, we need volunteers as teachers, aides, and hall monitors! If you are interested, please email David Jules at: [email protected]

Everyone is welcome to join. SCAM Just a reminder - the priests and staff of St. Matthew’s will never send you a “cold call” email or text asking for financial help for the parish or someone in need. Inevita-bly it would require purchase of GIFT CARDS. Never buy gift cards as payment or to make a donation to any-one.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II creat-ed the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Span-ning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minis-ter in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant ser-vices. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
St. Matthew’s now participates in the charitable giving program with Amazon, called AmazonSmile. A customer is charged NOTHING for this, yet 0.5% of the purchase price goes to support our parish. (That is, 1/2 of 1%, or 5¢ of $10).
ON A COMPUTER WEB BROWSER: Participating takes two simple steps. Step 1 is one-time: select your charity. Go to smile.amazon.com. If this is the first time you are logging into AmazonSmile, you will be taken to the page to select a charity. There will be suggested charities at the top, and a “Pick your own charitable organization” line where you can type “st matthew edison” Choose St Matthew the Apostle Church with the orange button. If you already had chosen a charity in the past and wish to change it to St. Matthew’s, click the “Supporting [your charity name]” in the menu across the top. You will be taken to the page described. Step 2 is easy but you must do it EVERY time you shop: instead of going to amazon.com to shop, go to smile.amazon.com. Shop as usual, pay the same price, and 0.5% goes to our church! You might want to bookmark smile.amazon.com in your browser. ON THE AMAZON PHONE APP: If you are not already an AmazonSmile member, simply sign up at smile.amazon.com and select your favorite charity to start generating donations, at no cost to you. Then, in the app, turn on AmazonSmile: open the app and find ’Settings’ in the main menu. Tap on ‘AmazonSmile’ and follow the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile on your phone. They tell us the average family with Amazon Prime spends $1,400 per year on Amazon. Our parish would get $7/year of that $1,400. If only 100 such parishioners used smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com EVERY TIME, our parish would get $700 per year. We have 3,000 families! Imagine if ALL PARISHIONERS did this! It’s not a major fundraiser, but everything helps. Please do NOT spend money that you would not already. The built-in donation is not tax deductible (except by Amazon, of course). Thanks for helping the parish!
