Saint Anselm College Football GAME NOTES

SCOUTING STONEHILL: The Skyhawks, picked to finish seventh in the Northeast-10 Conference, come to the Hilltop following a season-opening 34-19 loss to Fairmont State University. The Fighting Falcons were winners of 24 of their last 31 games dating back to Sept. 15, 2015 and were receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Preseason Poll.

The Skyhawks trailed by a 14-0 margin before a one-yard sprint by James Lam opened the scoring for the hosts. Fairmont State led by a 24-10 margin but Stonehill was able to cut the deficit to 24-19 late in the fourth quarter following another one-yard rushing score by Lam. The Fighting Falcons tacked on its fourth touchdown of the day and later added a field goal with under one minute to go, resulting in a 34-19 final score.

SAINT ANSELM QUICK HITS: Fairweather enters the game needing only nine rushing yards to reach 1,500 for his career...His 5.48 career rushing yards per carry is the all-time program record...Hill is averaging 4.9 receptions per game across his career, placing him within the top 20 among active players...Hill enters play with 18 career touchdown receptions, holding second place in all-time program history...The roster for Saint Anselm is comprised of student-athletes from 14 states and two countries...A total of 43 student-athletes hail from Massachusetts, followed by 12 each from New Hampshire and New Jersey...17 student-athletes from last season’s team earned Spring 2018 Dean’s List honors from the College...Defensive line coach John Trisciani enters his 10th season with the program in 2018, surpassing the tenure of Hawks assistant Paul Lavigne (nine years) as the longest in modern-day football history at Saint Anselm...Saint Anselm has played 194 official contests since the revival of football on the Hilltop in 1999.

THE SOFTCHECK FILE: A new coach will be calling the offensive plays for the Saint Anselm football team as the Hawks announced the hire of Jordan Softcheck as their Offensive Coordinator in late March.

Softcheck came to the Hilltop off of a two-year stint at Brown University where he was most recently in charge of recruiting and coaching wide receivers. Before his stint with the Bears, he coached the wide receivers at the University of Dayton from 2012-15, helping the Flyers to a 31-14 record over that span.

During his time at Brown, Softcheck coached two All-Ivy League selections, including 2017 selection Jakob Prall who ranked sixth in the league in reception yards. In 2016, the Bears’ Alex Jette ranked ninth in the Ivy League in all-purpose yards and finished his career as a four-time First Team All-Ivy selection.

At Dayton, Softcheck coordinated the passing game and coached standout Ross Smith, who finished his Flyers career ranked third all-time in career receptions (118) and fifth in single-season catches (57, 2014). The Flyers qualified for the NCAA Division I FCS postseason in 2015, taking on Western Illinois in the First Round.

A 2009 graduate of NCAA Division II Wingate University, Softcheck was an Assistant Coach for the Bulldogs’ football program. He served as the wide receivers coach and assisted the recruiting efforts for the team while coaching multiple all-conference wide receivers and one All-America honoree.

As an undergraduate at Wingate, Softcheck was a three-year letter winner and served as a team captain. He was a member of the team and class that tied the Wingate career and single season record for victories. Softcheck also earned a Masters of Arts in Education (Sport Administration) from Wingate in 2011.

MERCER LONE ALL-CONFERENCE PICK IN 2017: Linebacker Eric Mercer ‘18 was the Hawks lone recipient of All-League honors from the Northeast-10 Conference at the end of last season. Mercer was named Second Team All-Conference on defense after an outstanding senior campaign for the Hawks.

As a senior, Mercer posted 34 solo and 43 assisted tackles to rank fourth in the NE10 in total tackles (77). Averaging 7.7 tackles per game to rank fifth in the league, Mercer forced and recovered a fumble in his team’s 35-34 victory over Pace on Oct. 21. He racked up 13 tackles at American International on Sept. 30, equaling a career-high.

Mercer exits a four-year career with 270 tackles, ranking 30th among active NCAA Division II student-athletes in takedowns. His 148 career assisted tackles are the 21st most in Division II and 74th nationally when compared to football players across all divisions. He finishes with the fourth-most career tackles of any Saint Anselm student-athlete since the program’s modern-day inception in 1999.

An All-Rookie team selection at linebacker in 2014, Mercer graduated with a degree in business after earning Dean’s List and NE10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for his performance in the classroom.

Saint Anselm College Football GAME NOTES

2018 COACHING STAFFHEAD COACH JOE ADAM

Joe Adam (pictured left) will begin his third season as the Head Coach of the Saint Anselm College football team in 2018. Adam was named to the position on Apr. 19, 2016.

Adam came to the Hilltop with more than 20 years of coaching experience with success at all levels of NCAA football, having been a part of two NCAA Division II National Championships. Adam has taken his teams to bowl games and helped a program reach the NCAA playoffs for the first time in the school’s history.

He earned his first-career win at Saint Anselm on Saturday, Oct. 22 when the Hawks cruised past Pace by a 42-7 score at Grappone Stadium. Adam also led the Hawks to a 28-17 victory over Merrimack on Senior Day the following week. The Hawks finished his first season by leading the Northeast-10 Conference in passing yards per game (243.7), ranking third in time of possession (32:26), fourth in third-down conversions (41%) and fifth in points per game (22.9). Sophomore wide receiver Kyle Hill was a Second Team All-NE10 choice after leading the NE10 in receiving yards (1,091) and receiving yards per game (99.2), while quarterback Yianni Gavalas finished his undergraduate career as the program’s all-time leader in nearly every major passing category.

Senior linebacker Eric Mercer captured All-League honors for the Hawks in 2017, highlighting a season that saw the team post a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Pace on Oct. 21. In that contest, the Hawks trailed by a game-high 14 points through the first 20 minutes of play and posted 29 second-half points to complete the comeback. Saint Anselm ranked in the top half of NE10 programs in rushing

yards per game, kick return yardage, red zone touchdown percentage and total tackles. The Hawks also played a highly-disciplined style of football, averaging just shy of six penalties per game to rank second in the league.

Prior to coming to Saint Anselm, Adam most recently served as the offensive line coach at Syracuse for two seasons. He helped coach an offense that ranked in the top 10 of the program’s past 50 seasons. His offensive line unit finished the season ranked in the top third of DI FBS teams in fewest sacks allowed. He also coached All-ACC selection and NFL free-agent signee (New Orleans Saints) Sean Hickey.

Prior to Syracuse, Adam spent eight seasons at Elmhurst College in Illinois, serving as the head coach for the 2013 season. Adam’s defense allowed 110 less yards per game than the year before.

With Adam as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2012, the Bluejays earned their first conference championship in 22 years, qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in program history.

Adam also spent time at Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State, winning two national titles with the Lakers including one in 2003 with then head coach Brian Kelly, now head coach at Notre Dame.

Adam received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Grand Valley State. He and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Joe and Jessica.
