St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

Dear Friends,

Again this weekend some of our young people will be receiving their First Holy Communion. We

congratulate them and we try to imitate their enthusiasm and joy. I think if we can recapture some of our past attitudes about receiving Holy Communion we might be more like our young

believers. What happens to the joy and enthusiasm of the children?

It is possible that the joy we should find in Jesus fades as we grow up and grow older. But should that be true? Jesus speaks to us this Sunday about “remaining in His love”. Of course we can all admit we want to live in God’s love. What happens? Should there be a link between Communion and how we live? Jesus clearly links love with living according to His

Commandments. Really how could we claim to love Him but still disregard what He commands us to do? Living as if we can make up our own teachings which are better than God’s—the name for this is “foolishness”.

Living in Communion with God brings us to the recognition that He is always with us. He strengthens us to live out what He commands. This is the secret to real joy in this life. Such a life brings us to the joy of Heaven.

Congratulations to all of our First Communion students!

We also congratulate Religious Education student Emily Bravo whose drawing is on the cover of today’s bulletin!

With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

P.S. I am most grateful for the prayers offered for my brother, Stephen. He has been very sick and remains in need of many prayers. Thank you.

From our Pastor,

Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler

De Nuestro Párroco,

Padre Mateo Zuberbueler

y sigue necesitando muchas oraciones. Muchas gracias.

Stewardship of Time and Talent / Corresponsabilidad de Tiempo y Talento

“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” — John 15:12-13

Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him.

Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

Dear St. Anthony Family,

On April 27th, our students had loads of fun dancing for our Safety Dance-A-Thon, to raise $15,000 for security enhancements, while sponsors poured in! By the end of the day we reached $10,000. This includes

generous donations from St. Anthony parish volunteers! THANK YOU for your support! Should anyone else wish to contribute, and help us bridge the $4,000 gap between where we are and reaching our goal, please visit our home page, www.corpuschristischool.org and click “Support,” then “Safety Dance.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to participate in the parish’s day of adoration each month. Every class participates, and second grade was especially blessed to have the opportunity on the 25th, just before their First Holy Communion on the sixth!

May 6, 2018 A Letter in Support of Our Fellow Parishioners with Particular Needs Dear St. Anthony’s of Padua Parishioners: I expect that most of you can tell that we have many needs here at St. Anthony’s of Padua. As I consider, the best way to approach them it becomes necessary to prioritize and to decide which projects to undertake first. One area which seems to cry out for attention is the accessibility of the church for people in wheelchairs or with other limitations to their mobility. We do have a good number of handicapped parking spaces in the front main parking lot of the church. Even so, I do receive requests to add more spaces. This is because the existing ones fill up at some Masses. We are considering ways to add more spaces. One idea which makes a lot of sense to me would be to construct a ramp from the sidewalk up to the church doors near the Peace Garden/Columbarium, the side of the church by the athletic field and playground. With a ramp there we could add more handicapped parking spaces on that side thus providing new options for parking and entering the church. We have a further need of automatic door openers. These could be installed at the main entrance to the church and at the side doors mentioned above. Already in progress is the renovation of a confessional to allow a person in a wheelchair to enter easily and to exit easily. One more change which I think will be helpful is the removal of the end of a few carefully selected pews to allow for persons in wheelchairs to attend Mass without feeling like they are in the aisles. I hope everyone can see the value of these proposed improvements. I ask you, please, to make a donation to help cover the associated costs, which will, no doubt, be significant. The Parish Special Needs Collection on Sunday, May 12-13 will be specifically for these projects. If you would like to make an early or substantial gift, please let me know. With gratitude and hope,

Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor
