SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Pentecost Sunday

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts

of your faithful and kindle in them

the fire of your love.

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house

in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit… .” Acts 2: 2-4

“Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me,

so I send you.” John 20:21

To conclude the Church’s traditional May homage to Mary, I thought you might be

interested in the status of Paris’s famous cathedral of Notre Dame. It has been more than a year since so much of it was destroyed in the fire of April 15, 2019, shocking France and both Catholics and non-Catholics throughout the world. Immediately after the fire, the French government officials and influential people from the private sector promsed to restore the 12th-century church, which saw 30,000 visitors a day, more than the Eiffel Tower. President Emmanuel Macron vowed that France would restore it within five years, a schedule many building experts thought was too optimistic, saying that the work would probably require 10 to 15 years. And problems have emerged that may jeopardize that early confidence and resolve. Initial work to stabilize what is left of the structure have revealed an alarming degree of fragility, and now the coronavirus pandemic has caused work to be halted indefinitely. A further complication is the debate about how the restoration should proceed. Should its goal be to achieve as authentic a reproduction of the original church as possible, or should a more modern style and solution prevail, as when the Louvre was modified in distinctively newer terms when the museum’s current entrance was built not long ago? The French government has solicited proposals from architects around the world. To receive a commission to modify Notre Dame in a new (continued above)

and creative way would be the dream of most architects. How things will go will be anybody’s guess. The most famous literary work on the cathedral is Victor Hugo’s novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), better known in English as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It vividly represented Hugo’s Romanticism, with its reverence for past glories. Hugo pointed out that

Charlemagne had laid its first stone. After the depredations and neglect the cathedral suffered following the French Revolution, Hugo’s book was the greatest influence impelling the effort to restore it. He called it “a vast symphony of stone” and “… mighty and prolific as the Divine Creation, of which it seems to have caught the double character—variety and eternity.” Hugo saw three causes for the deterioration of Notre Dame: Time and neglect of maintenance, religious and political revolutions, and the machinations of architects who wanted their imprint to be on it. Of the intrusive and inferior work of architects intent on remodeling the church he said, “This is the kick of the ass at the expiring lion.” He referred to Notre Dame as “the old oak, which, in the last stages of decay, is stung and gnawed by the caterpillars.” Victor Hugo is long dead, but there is no doubt where he would stand on the debate over Notre Dame’s future if he weren’t.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7 To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open

your heart and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit to

guide your thoughts, words and actions every day! Be

grateful for all the gifts God has given you! Regardless

of our individual circumstances, God has given all of us

many blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift

back to God! By generously sharing everything we

have and everything we are, we become more “God-

centered” and less “self-centered” and our lives truly

reflect God’s light, love and mercy.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What is happening on the other side? As tides continue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery and the effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of their presence is left behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its humble mark upon the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble still makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be big. You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that can influence time and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that: fierce and torrential, and then almost still and silent, creating and recreating nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit continues to move over, around, and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit and unknown possibilities to what we humbly bring with us and that same Spirit

PENTECOST SUNDAY

eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ.

The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their friend-God, humble offerings, and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very little. Do you believe that you are being led and that you have a purposeful life? We often do not realize our value because we do not think that the little we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A little flour mixed with water and embraced by a prayer of blessing transforms simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharistic presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gifts of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underestimate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an elderly widow, the listening ear offered to one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry, and the loving shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gifts offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone.
