SEVENTH UNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 23, 2020

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

2020 LENTEN REGULATIONS The days of BOTH Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the Law of Abstinence.

High School friendships can be rewarding and lasting, as was the case with the English authors G. K. Chesterton and Edmund Clerihew Bentley. Chesterton became one of the Twentieth Century’s most notable converts to Caholicism and Bentley became famous for his four-line comic poems that deftly described renowned people or significant subjects, which came to be known as “Clerihews.” Chesterton, who dedicated his novel The Man Who Was Thursday to Bentley, helped popularize Clerihews and composed some pretty good ones himself, such as: The Spanish people think Cervantes Equal to half a dozen Dantes; An opinion resented most bitterly By the people of Italy. But Bentley was the master of the form. Among his many gems was: The art of Biography Is different from Geography. Geography is about maps, But Biography is about Chaps. A number of beautiful books have recently been published on maps, both new and old. One of them, Travis Elborough’s Atlas of Vanishing Places, tells the story of the Roman city of Timgad, located in today’s Algeria in what had once been the Roman province of Numidia. called Thamugadi in ancient times, it was built around 100 A.D. , partly for defensive purposes and partly as a settlement to reward retired legionnaires for their long years of service to the empire. It is one of the few fully excavated towns of that time. At its peak, it had a secular basilica, a forum, fourteen public baths, a theater, a market, a library, a large pagan temple and at least eleven Chrisitian churches. Most of its private houses enjoyed the convenience of piped-in water. Timgad flourished for many years until it fell victim to the Vandal invaders of the 5th century and to incursions by Berbers from the mountains to the east. After visiting Timgad and contemplating its ruins, the great writer Hilaire Belloc wrote an eloquent observation about the depredations it experienced and its fate, including a memorable warning: .

We sit by and watch the Barbarian, we tolerate him, in the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverences, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refreshes us; we laugh. But as we laugh we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond; and on these faces there is no smile. It is a remark that has extensive applicability even now.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A)

This weekend, Saint Joseph Church will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the 10:30 am Mass. Our candi-dates will then celebrate the Rite of Continu-ing Con-version at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, in Newark, on Saturday, February 29. On that first weekend of Lent, as Catholic bishops around the world welcome those sent by their parish-es, our parish too will gather with many others from all around our Archdiocese, before Cardinal Tobin. Our Candidates, accompanied by their Sponsors, Fr. Anthony and RCIA team members, along with our pa-rishioner’s support and prayers, will express their in-tention to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church as celebrated this Easter season. As the Archdiocese welcomes and accepts our parish Candidates in the grace of God, on their journey to full initiation in the sacraments this coming Easter, please keep them in your prayers, that as they enter their fi-nal period of preparation, may they continue to be nurtured with the Word of God and the Cross of Our Savior. RCIA Candidates: George Pecoraro, David Nix, Michael Mancuso RCIA Coordinator: Fr. Anthony Di Stefano RCIA Team Members: Melinda Rabbia Fred Fakharzadeh * Pat Fakharzadeh

WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR LENT?

Join the hundreds of thousands of people in over 400 cities across America participating in 40 Days for Life this Lent. 40 Days For Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to helping unborn ba-bies and putting an end to abortion through prayer, fasting, and standing in vigil outside the places where abortions are performed. Please consider giving one hour a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays from February 27th to April 4th, joining others in a peaceful prayer vigil across from Hackensack Wom-en’s Choice at 10 Zabriskie St from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. For more information or to sign up, contact Marga-ret at 201- 805-0937 or [email protected]. Your presence will definitely make a difference and maybe save a baby’s life!

It is not too early to start thinking about Saint Joseph’s 2020-2021 RCIA!

RCIA is an opportunity to learn more about Catholicism and to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Anyone who would like to inquire about becoming a fully initiated Catholic through the sacraments, or any Catholic adult who would like to be confirmed is wel-come and may contact Fr. Anthony at [email protected] or call 201-261-0148 ext. 13.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who

persecute you…” MATTHEW 5:44

Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But,

remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we

are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it

turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God

and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our

enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe

it soften their hearts as well.

HELP SAINT JOSEPH COMMUNITY COUNT IN THE 2020 CENSUS

Census data impacts decisions at the national, state and local levels—from congressional representation to the annual allocation of more than $675 billion. These funds are essential to the wellbeing of our families, our faith community and our neigh-bors. The Archdiocese of Newark encourages you to fill out your census form. Beginning in mid-March, you can respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail. Responding is quick and easy and you can complete the Census on your mobile device.
