STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body.”

—2 CORINTHIANS 5:10

We are all accountable for the gifts God has given us on Earth—our time, talent and treasure. One day each of us will be asked by God

what we did with those gifts. How will you respond?

(Art above is from the Sistine Chapel’s fresco “The Last Judgment” by Michelangelo.)

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JUNE 14, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Here are some books to consider if you want to read something faith-filled:

∎ Joseph Pearce has two on writers of Catholic interest: Beauteous Truth: Faith, Reason, Literature and Culture (St. Augustine’s Press) and Catholic Literary Giants: A Field Guide to the Catholic Literary Landscape (Ignatius Press). If you have wanted to learn more about authors such as Shakespeare, Dante, Newman, Hopkins, Chesterton, Belloc, Eliot, Bernanos and Waugh, Pearce is a trustworthy guide who is easy and delightful to read.

∎ Sven Stolpe’s The Maid of Orleans: The Life and Mysticism of Joan of Arc (Ignatius Press) is a new treatment of one of the most interesting saints.

∎ Dietrich von Hildebrand’s My Battle Against Hitler: Faith, Truth and Defiance in the Shadow of the Third Reich (Image) is a memoir by a great philosopher and writer on the spiritual life who narrowly escaped Nazi Germany and later moved to the United States, where he worked at Fordham University.

∎ Randy Boyagoda’s Richard John Neuhaus is a biography of the Lutheran minister who became a Catholic priest. Fr. Neuhaus, a notable supporter of the Civil Rights movement, went on to found the influential journal First Things. He was one of the most effective defenders of Christianity in modern times and wrote many valuable books, including The Naked Public Square: Religion and Democracy in America, in which he argued powerfully that religion should not be excluded from our civic conversation.

∎ Brian Burch and Emily Stimpson’s The American Catholic Almanac: A Daily Reader of Patriots, Saints, Rogues, and Ordinary People Who Changed the United States (Image) has interesting profiles of influential Catholics and absorbing information about our Church’s place in history. For instance, did you know that for forty years Old St. Joseph Church in Philadelphia was the only place in the English-speaking world where Catholic Mass was offered publicly and legally?

∎ Although discussion of religious values has markedly receded in today’s America, a hopeful sign for a revival can be found in recent works on the importance of virtuous living, among them, The Book of Man: Readings on the Path to Manhood, an anthology by William J. Bennett and Christopher Beach (Thomas Nelson); Jonathan V. Last’s collection, The Seven Deadly Virtues (Templeton) (a misleading title—he’s on the good side); David Brook’s The Road to Character (Random House), with an interesting 15-point “humility code;” and Teresa Jordan’s The Year of Living Virtuously (Weekends Off): One Woman’s Search for Meaning in Ordinary Life

(Counterpoint), which explores thinkers ranging from Benjamin Franklin to Will Rogers, but also has her own practical ideas, such as how to keep one’s weight down (“ … My inner athlete can foil the glutton by sending extra cheesecake home with a guest….”).

Books of fiction and literature include:

∎John Williams’s Augustus: A Novel (New York Review of Books), on the first Roman Emperor, who reigned in the lifetime of Jesus. His tutor says of him that “He will become what he will become, out of the force of his

person and the accident of his fate.”

∎ Marilyn Robinson’s Lila (FSG), the third of her acclaimed novels on small-town Iowa minister John Ames and his family and neighbors. Lila, Reverend Ames’s considerably younger wife, after reading the Book of Job, reflects that “she never expected to find so many things she already knew about

written down in a book.”

∎ Richard Crompton’s Hell’s Gate (Sarah Crichton), a mystery novel about Mollel, a Kenyan police officer with a strong belief that justice “is something eternal, more powerful and more significant than the human society that attempts to define it and bind it to rules and laws”—a conviction that gets him demoted and transferred from Nairobi to a small town.

∎ Jami Attenberg’s Saint Mazie (Grand Central), a fictional retelling of the colorful and heroically charitable life of Mazie Phillips (“Queen of the Bowery”), a subject of a famous 1940 New Yorker article by Joseph Mitchell. She spent years helping New York’s down-and-outs.

∎ Two books on poetry are Map: Collected and Last Poems (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) by Wislawa Symborska, the late Polish Nobel laureate; and Clive James’s Poetry Notebook (Liveright), essays on modern poets by a masterful English literary critic.

∎ Two interesting novels for teens, both set in World War II, are Lila Perl’s Isabel’s War (Lizzie Skurnick Books), about a girl who first resents having to share her room with a 14-year-old refugee from Germany; and Joan Hiatt Harlow’s The Watcher (McElderry Books), about a girl living in Berlin who becomes tangentially involved with members of the White Rose student protests against the Nazis.

∎ Two illustrated books for young children are Matthew de la Pen a’s Last Stop on Market Street (Putnam), about a grandmother who, after church, takes her grandson on a bus ride to help out at a soup kitchen in a poor neighborhood; and Oliver Jeffer’s Once Upon an Alphabet: Short Stories for All the Letters (Philomel).

“WHY PRAYING IS IMPORTANT”

The following are excerpts from Saint Joseph School sixth grader Carrie McKee’s award-winning essay—from the Knights of Columbus’ essay contest for students in Grades

6-7-8 on the value of prayer.

“... Praying is a time set aside out of your day to talk with God…. There are many different varieties of prayer such as reading the Bible, praying the Rosary, or just simply talking to God. Praying should be a key part of your day whether you are young or old, rich or poor, happy or sad. … Praying is a key part of building a deeper and greater relationship with God. Also, prayer gives us a chance to express our thankfulness to God for all that he has done for us...to confess our sins when we have done wrong...to ask for God’s guidance to help us through the hardships of life. Although it may not always be easy to include prayer in our everyday lives, it is very important to stay connected with God. Setting a specific time each day to fit in prayer should not be too difficult. We can pray when we wake up in the morning, when we are driving in a car, just before eating a meal, right before an im-portant test, or as the last thing we do before we go to bed.” Thank you, Carrie, for reminding us all to pray!
