TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 22, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Green Acres is the place to be, Farm living is the life for me. Land stretching out so far and wide. Take Manhattan, just give me that countryside. (It may take a couple of weeks to get them out of your head, if you remember the show.) Eddie Albert had previously appeared in a number of successful pictures, including Roman Holiday and Oklahoma, and also in a powerful World War II film called Attack! (1956), in which he played “Captain Cooney,” whose cowardice under pressure led to Jack Palance’s “Lt. Costa” being run over by a German tnk, leaving him with a horribly mangled arm and me with still another Hollywood-induced nightmare at age 8. In real life, Eddie Albert was a war hero who was decorated for his actions in the terrible battle of Tarawa against the Japanese. Why he agreed to play a coward, I don’t know. Maybe he saw the role as a good career move, or maybe he needed or wanted the money. In any event, we shouldn’t judge actors by the roles they perform. And we’re also not supposed to be too ready to judge other people harshly, especially since we may be doing them a wrong.

Msgr. David Hubba

Several frequently broadcast TV commercials, including Chevy and Hyundai, have lately in-sisted that their evaluation of their products comes from “real people, not actors,” which makes me wonder how actors feel about this

characterization. (“What are we—inhuman?”) Actors are supposed to portray certain realities, whether fictional or non-fictional. Some movies charge actors with frightening us. As a boy in the mid-1950s, I remember seeing a movie called The Creature With the Atom Brain, total schlock about a gangster who arranged to reanimate bodies of dead criminals to take revenge on his enemies. It scared me so much that I had several nightmares about it. The former residence of actor Eddie Albert recently went on sale for an asking price of $19.5 million. Mr. Albert, who died in 2005 at the age of 99, was best known for playing “Oliver Douglas,” a lawyer turned hapless farmer and the husband of Eva Gabor in the silly (and so very successful) TV comedy “Green Acres,” which brought innocent enjoyment to many viewers from 1965-1971, although some thought the most skillful acting in it was done by the cute pig “Arnold.” You may recall the lyrics of the show’s theme song, which began: (continued above)

(Our parishioner, Flor Alto, was blessed to be in Fatima, Portugal for the 100th anniversary celebration. She brought back this prayer for us.)

FATIMA JUBILEE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Hail, Mother of the Lord, Virgin Mary, Queen of the Rosary of Fatima! Blessed among all women, you are the image of the Church dressed in the Paschal light, you are the honour of our people, you are the triumph over the mark of evil.

Prophecy of the merciful Love of the Father, Teacher of the Annunciatiion of the Good News of the Son, Sign of the burning Fire of the Holy Spirit, teach us, in this valley of joys and sorrow, the eternal truths that the Father reveals to the little ones.

Show us the strength of your mantle of protection. In your Immaculate Heart, be the refuge of sinners and the way that leads to God.

In unity with my brethren, In Faith, Hope and Love, I surrender myself to you. In unity with my brethren, through you, I consecrate myself to God, O Vigin of the Rosary of Fatima.

And thus surrounded by the Light that comes from your hands, I will give Glory to the Lord for ever and ever.

Amen.

See over 100 photos of this historic moment in the life of the Church on our parish Facebook page at facebook.com/church.st.joseph Cover photo by Ellen Solinas; interior photos of Fatima event by Ellen Solinas and Diane Hellriegel.

A special thank you to Kurt Strobach and Pat Fakharzadeh who planned the wonderful prayer experience of the Fatima event and worked so hard to make it happen. Thank

you to all who served in any capacity, including the Knights of Columbus, the litter bearers Brendan Walsh, Nick Ocello, Sheldon Mustard and especially Mike Kirwan (who built the litter himself). Thank you to Fr. John Quill for his moving talk. Thank you to Shannon Robertson of Anuhea Flowers & Gifts. Thank you to all those young people and families who carried our presentation rosaries, to those who led our beautiful procession, to all those who led us in prayer, and to the 250 faithful who attended.

“My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God.”

TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 22, 2017

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are Gods.” MATT 22:21 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second.
