SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 14, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Among 2017’s deaths in the world of religion:

∎ Steven McDonald, NYPD detective: After being shot and left paralyzed by 15-year-old Shavod Jones in 1986, he spent the rest of his life speaking at schools, churches and other organizations, urging forgiveness and peace. “I try to do something good every day,” he said. “It’s always been my hope that I can think of something, say something that’s going to help people that I meet.” McDonald wrote to his assailant (who eventually apologized to him) and said that some day maybe they could travel the country together to tell how the shooting changed them both. But Jones died just three days after his release from prison in 1995.

∎ Fr. Michael Scanlan, OFM Conv.: The former president of the Franciscan University of Steuben- ville and a graduate of Harvard Law School, he transformed the school from a community college of 175 students to a vibrant university of 2,000 by stressing what he called “dynamic orthodoxy,” so that it now enjoys an international reputation for its theology and its student life, both strongly influenced by its Catholic charismatic spirit.

∎ Johann Cristoph Arnold: Pastor (1972-1983) and then senior elder (2001-2017) of the Bruderhof, an austere Christian community that was forced to flee the Nazis, going first to Paraguay and then to Ulster County, NY. Arnold wrote twelve books for Plough, the Bruderhof’s commendable publishing arm, including the moving and challenging Why Forgive?

∎ Sr. Ruth Pfau: A German of evangelical background, she became a medical doctor after World War II, entering the profession after being deeply affected by the death of her baby brother. She then became a Catholic and, in 1957, a nun, joining the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary. Because of a government mix-up with her passport, she chanced to meet a leper as she waited for it to be straightened out, and was so moved by the man’s pitiable condition that she joined the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center in the slums of Karachi, which had been founded by a member of her order, and eventually turned it into a headquarters from which 157 medical centers would operate, not only for Hansen’s Disease but for other medical needs of the poor. From this, she played a key role in treating tens of thousands, becoming known as the “Mother (continued above)

Teresa of Pakistan.” She once said, “When you receive such a calling, you cannot turn it down, for it is not you who made the choice. God has chosen you for himself.” After she relinquished control of the medical centers in 2006, she remarked, “I don’t use the word ‘retirement.’ It sounds as if you had completed everything, as if life was over and the world was in order.”

∎ Fr. Rene Laurentin: A world-renowned Catholic theologian who specialized in Mariology and was well known for his investigations of religious visions, he wrote 150 books, including 6 on Our Lady of Lourdes. He noted that St. Bernadette would not enter into disputes, or even discussions, with opponents who were disinclined to believe in Mary’s appearances at Lourdes, but would simply answer, “I am charged to tell you. I am not charged to make you believe.”

Among writers who died:

∎ William Peter Blatty: His 1971 novel The Exorcist sold 13 million copies and became a hit film two years later. Blatty had written scripts for comedy films before that, including the one for “A Shot in the Dark” (1964), the second of the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies, but, Blatty said, “The Exorcist not only ended that career; it expunged all memory of its existence.” His mother’s sudden death in 1967 brought him back to his Catholic faith. He once said that the point of his famous novel was “that God exists and the universe itself will have a happy ending.”

∎ Derek Walcott: Poet, playwright and painter, he was the most famous Caribbean writer of recent times, winning the 1992 Nobel Prize for literature. Of African, Dutch and English lineage, he lived in St. Lucia. In 2016 he collaborated with Peter Doig, a Scottish painter now living in Trinidad, providing the verses for their beautiful book Morning, Paramin. Describing Doig’s painting of a man walking along a cemetery wall holding a pink umbrella over his head, Walcott wrote: The parasol, I’d say, belongs to his dead wife; it floats him determined, ruminant in the hot sun, above the street and roofs; he passes the same street every day, repetitive as the painting of himself.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK (continued)

∎ Hugh Thomas: Author of The Spanish Civil War (1961), once banned by the Franco government and now regarded as a classic. Thomas later became an associate of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

∎ John Ashberry: Celebrated author of 28 collections of poetry, who was called America’s most imitated poet.

∎ Richard Wilbur: Another esteemed poet, whose friend and fellow poet Dana Gioia called him “America’s preeminent Christian poet.” When a New York Times reviewer assailed his collection The Mind-Reader (1976), Jack Butler (of Okolona, Arkansas) rose to Wilbur’s defense in a letter to the editor, saying of the reviewer that “the man has had a feast set before him, the very best, and complains because it is not a peanut butter and ketchup sandwich.”

Prominent deaths in the fields of public affairs and the news industry included those of:

∎ Nat Hentoff: A provocative columnist for the liberal Village Voice for fifty years, he was a surprisingly staunch opponent of abortion. In his last piece, he promised to keep “putting on my skunk suit at other garden parties.”

∎ Claire Hollingworth: As a 27-year-old cub reporter for the Telegraph in 1939 just before WW II erupted, she borrowed a British diplomat’s car and drove from Poland to Germany, where she saw massed military equipment when the wind stirred the burlap coverings that concealed it. She later covered the war, the Algerian civil war, the India-Pakistan conflict, two Arab-Israeli wars, Vietnam and Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Not long before she died, she said, “I know no one is likely to be looking for a 92-year-old correspondent to go and cover wars, but if I could have my way and there’s a war nearby, I’d go tomorrow.”

∎ Michael Novak: A Catholic philosopher and theologian who was a strong defender of capitalism, he argued effectively about the benefits free markets have given people. Among his finely crafted books were The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism (1982) and Confession of a Catholic (1983). Speaking about his happy marriage to his wife Karen, he said that “we always expected the worst—but then were delighted by the little things that turned out

(continued above)

beautifully.” His last words were: “God loves you, and you must love one another. That is all that matters. God bless you all.”

∎ Norma McCorvey: The “Jane Roe” of the infamous 1973 Supreme Court decision that opened the door to abortion on demand, she later admitted that she lied about being raped and became a notable opponent of abortion, telling a Senate committee in 1998 that “I am dedicated to spending the rest of my life undoing the law that bears my name.” That same year, after talks with Fr. Frank Pavone, she also became a Catholic. She had three children: the Roe v. Wade baby and two she adopted.

∎ Jimmy Breslin: Colorful Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Daily News, he was especially known for his coverage of the city’s Son of Sam murders in the 1970s and for his articles on political corruption in the 1980s. With Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese, he was a prime contributor to the New Journalism movement. After Breslin wrote a column criticizing John Wayne for heading to the nearest hotel bar after speaking at the 1968 Republican convention, William F. Buckley, Jr. wrote, “so would I have done if I had had Mr. Breslin following me.”

∎ Roger Ailes: A master of the TV medium, he served as a campaign advisor to Presidents Nixon, Reagam. Bush-1 and Trump. Working with Rupert Murdoch, he created Fox News in opposition to the prevailing powers in the field (ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN). He said that his first qualification to do so was that “I didn’t go to Columbia Journalism School.”

∎ Zbigniew Brzezinski: President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Adviser, he took a fiercely anti-Soviet Union stance, especially during its invasion of Afghanistan.

Some businessmen who passed away were:

∎ Lorenzo Servitje: With four partners, he began a small bread bakery in Mexico City, which has grown into Grupo Bimbo, an international business with an estimated $12.3 billion in sales for 2016, owning, among other brands, Thomas’s English Muffins, Sara Lee and Entenmann’s.

∎ Eugene Michael Lang: The son of immigrants, he made a fortune licensing technology to manufacturers and donated an estimated (continued on next page)

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 14, 2018

SEPARATED/DIVORCED HEALING MINISTRY

—will resume on Monday, January 15 at 7:30 pm in the Jackson Room in the Lower Church (Harrison Street entrance). Newcomers are welcome! We present a 12-week DVD series on Catholic Church teaching on relevant topics. We pray together and have a discussion group. All sharing is confidential. We are here to support you and to help you grow in Christ-centered love. Any questions, contact Annette at [email protected]

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK (continued)

$200 million to charities, including through his “I Have a Dream Foundation.” In 1950, he bought a sports coat on sale, and wore it for the next fifty years. He saved money by taking buses or local trains to Washington, instead of traveling by the Acela. During a visit to the 61 sixth-graders at the Harlem grade school he had attended as a boy, he offered to pay their tuitions to any city or state colleges they would attend. Asked late in life by a reporter how many honor- ary degrees he had received, he said, “More than 40 degrees. Would you like some?” He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

∎ Truly Nolen: After recovering from polio, he started a greatly successful pest-control business in Florida, which had an ad slogan, “Any last wishes, silverfishes?” After becoming friends with a number of Jewish believers, he converted to Judaism, making his Bar Mitzvah at the age of 68. Among his children were a son named Really and a daughter named Sincere Leigh.

∎ Al Lechter: A retailer of kitchenware and of tools and gadgets for the kitchen, he displayed his merchandise from floor to ceiling, following his motto, “Stack it high, and let if fly.” Because most of his items sold for under $10, 80 % of those who visited his stores bought something. (I used to buy Mass cruets at Lecher’s. They’d cost about a third of what you’d pay at the religious goods stores.) After Al retired in 1993, dwindling mall traffic and competitors led Lechter’s to close its remaining stores in 2001. Late notables less easy to categorize included:

∎ Gene Cernan: On 12-14-72 he became the last of the twelve U.S. astronauts who walked on the moon.

∎ William Lombardy: An internationally famous grandmaster of chess who was also a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, he became World Junior champion at 20 with a perfect score of eleven wins, then won, or tied for, three U.S. Open championships. He was Bobby Fischer’s advisor in Fischer’s famous 1972 victory over Boris Spassky for the World Championship. He was ordained a priest in 1967, but left in the late 1970s to marry a Dutch woman, a union that ended in divorce. He helped care for John W. Collins, his chess coach, in Collins’s final illness.

(continued above)

∎ Charles Manson: A small-time crook with a swastika etched into his forehead and with musical aspirations that came to nothing, he recruited young members of his “family” and sent them on a 1969 murder spree that killed nine people, including actress Sharon Tate, hoping to incite a race war he called “Helter- Skelter.” He already seems to be a mainstay of cable-TV programming at its most lurid.
