RE: SCHEDULING OUR SUNDAY MASSES PART FIVE

We will change our Sunday Mass schedule July 1. For over a month, we have shared the different reasons and rationale for these changes here in the bulletin in weekly installments. Today, we thought it might be helpful to review the main reasons behind the changes.

Decreased congestion between Masses – by allowing for two hours between each Mass we create a smooth arrival and exit both at the doors of the church and in the streets and parking lots

Increased opportunity for hospitality – Monthly coffees and parish socials will be possible now that there is more time between our Masses. Parishioners can socialize after Mass and still leave before people arrive for the next Mass

Safer driving and parking during winter months – Snow piles up, decreasing parking spots and the roadways narrow, leading to traffic and driving challenges with our current schedule. In the new schedule, parishioners will not be competing for limited parking spots in the winter and roads around the church will be less congested.

Baptisms – With our current schedule, we generally only celebrate Baptisms at the Noon Mass. Now we will be able to celebrate them at the 10:30 am and 12:30 pm Masses due to the increased time between these services.

Religious Education & Liturgy of the Word with Children – Our Mass with the Liturgy of the Word with Children will slide back by a half-hour to 8:30 am and our Religious Education Program will begin at 9:45 am and end at 11:10 am. This schedule will allow parents to drop off and pick up their kids without running into other parishioners who would be arriving or leaving one of the Masses.

More prayerful celebration of Sacraments – As we recently experienced during First Holy Communions, there were serious congestion issues with both parking and the flow of parishioners arriving and exiting the church. With a longer gap between Masses, we won’t have folks trying to exit the Mass and take photos running into those arriving for the next Mass.

New Sunday Mass Schedule

Starts Sunday, July 1, 2012

Saturday, 5 pm

7 am, 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 12:30 pm

CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY, JUNE 10, 2012

PASTOR’S COLUMN OUR KINDERGARTEN GRADUATES SPEAK Thursday, June 7, Kindergarten teacher, Miss Mary Lee and religion teacher/aide, Mrs. Rita Canino, bid farewell to the Saint Joseph Class of 2012 as they “graduated” from Kindergarten. Three of the graduates, Jack Tenaglia, Oscar Nunez and Eric Petrie, were proud to offer their thoughts about their Kindergarten days.

What did you learn to do in Kindergarten that you could not do before? Eric: I can read now! Jack: Now I know how to hold scissors the right way and cut with them. Oscar: I can do a “crab walk!” (Sit on the ground, bend knees, raise up on hands and feet, and walk like a crab!)

What was your best holiday celebration in school? Eric: When Santa came to our class with presents at Christmas. It was great, but we learned that Christmas is even more than that—it is when Jesus was born. Jack: When we left bags in the classroom for the Easter bunny to fill and he did! We found out that Easter is when Jesus rose from the dead. Oscar: We made cards for our moms on Mother’s Day. Jack: We sang songs for them too! Oscar: We learned that Mary is God’s mother.

What did you learn in religion class: Jack: I learned about the day Jesus died and the day he rose again. I liked hearing the stories from the Bible. Eric: We learned how to be good. Oscar: And how to pray.

What did you like about going to Mass each month with the entire school? Eric: I really liked the singing and praying. Jack: I got to watch my big sister receive Communion. It will be my turn soon. Oscar: I learned how to pray the “Our Father” out loud with everyone.

Jack, Oscar, and Eric

JUNE HAPPENINGS The month of June is always a busy time. It is a month of transitions, graduations, endings and beginnings. This is particularly true at our

parish.

This month we have had several graduation ceremonies at our parish school. We have had graduation from the greenhouse, our pre-school program; graduation from Kindergarten to First Grade (see column to the right); and graduation from eighth grade.

This month we are also witnessing an ending and a beginning. Father Raul’s six years of faithful service to our parish is coming to an end. Next weekend, June 16 & 17, will be his final weekend at Saint Joseph Parish. Father Raul will speak at every Mass next weekend, and there will be a farewell reception for him in the lower school gym following each liturgy. On June 20, he will begin his new ministry in the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota. Father Raul will be truly missed by all of us. The Diocese of Winona is getting a special gift from our parish.

On June 20, we will witness a beginning as Father Andrew Park begins his service as our new parochial vicar. Father Andrew will be introduced at all our Masses the weekend of June 23 & 24. Father Andrew, who was ordained in 2009, is 37 years old and a native of South Korea. He is very excited about being assigned to our parish and we look forward to welcoming him.

This month of June also witnesses a transition as our new Sunday Mass schedule goes into effect the weekend of June 30 and July 1. That weekend our Mass schedule transitions to Saturday at 5 pm, and Sunday at 7 am, 8:30 am, 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. There is more

information about the new schedule elsewhere in this bulletin .

June also brings other transitions as school ends and vacations begin, as

many parishioners spend time away at summer homes, and as the pace of life slows down.

All these graduations, transitions, endings and beginnings, remind us that life is not stable. It is ever changing and dynamic. But that is what makes life exciting. Tomorrow always holds the possibility of new opportunities and new blessings from God.

Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

A LETTER FROM ARCHBISHOP MYERS

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I write to you to urge you to speak out with clarity and strength against efforts by the current federal Administration to define what a Catholic institution is, and to impose restrictions and rules that would, if implemented, require Catholic institutions, Catholics themselves, t o violate Church teaching and tradition.

Beginning June 21 and continuing until July 4, every diocese across the nation will be participating in a Fortnight of Freedom to call for an end to an institutional coercion by the government against conscience, and government intrusion into the ordering of Church institutions.

Throughout these two weeks a number of national and regional events will take place. I encourage you to participate and become more informed about how fragile this first and most precious of all of our freedoms has become in recent years. I also encourage you to bring the matter into your local parish and wider community. For example, the parish can host a viewing of such appropriately-themed films as A Man for All Seasons or The War of the Vendee, or sponsor a trip to see For Greater Glory, followed by a discussion back at the parish. Or use materials available online at www.rcan.org/religiousliberty and www.fortnight4freedom.org for other parish based sessions and outreach to let our elected representatives in Washington know what we as American citizens and Catholics stand for.

Let me be clear: Fortnight for Freedom and the Church's efforts to halt imposition of Health and Human Services rules is not about contraception. Access to contraceptives is already widespread. Most non-Church employers provide this coverage, and even without coverage, birth-control pills can be obtained at low cost. The Church is merely seeking to ensure that Government does not become involved in what we teach or starts to erode our first of all freedoms.

With kindest personal regards, I am

Sincerely in the Lord,

+ John J. Myers

Archbishop of Newark

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from

St. Mark Chapter 14, verses 12-16 Today’s Gospel, is about a special meal that Jesus had with this friends, the disciples. During the dinner he took the bread and broke it and said, ”This is my body.” Then, he held up a cup of wine and said, “This is my blood.”

Every time a priest celebrates Mass, the priest says the same words. The priest has the power from God to change bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This means the bread and wine are filled with the life and love of Jesus.

When we share that special food we become one with Jesus, and one with his Church. That food also gives us strength to live as followers of Jesus.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Next time you see one of the priests, thank him for celebrating Mass and for giving us Jesus

in Holy Communion

Jesus took the bread, broke it and said “This is my Body”. Jesus held up the cup and said “This is my Blood”.
