Fr. Anthony was joined by his friend Deacon AJ DaSilva, Chaplain, Army Reserves (who will be ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Newark next month), to introduce “Quo Vadis” the week-long summer camp presented by the Office of Priestly Vocations. Members of our youth group and other invited guests and their families attended a video presentation about the camp and had a chance to try their hands at making s’mores.

Quo Vadis is a summer camp experience designed to help young men to understand their baptismal call to holi-ness. It is for young men who have completed 8th grade up to and including those men who have completed their senior year of high school. The four day camp (June 23-26 at Camp Shiloh, West Milford) will have out-door activities, prayer, and a chance to meet other young men from all over the Archdiocese. It will be facilitated by priests, seminarians and lay people of the Archdiocese. If you think you might be interested see Fr. Anthony or call him at 201-261-0148 x13. For more information go to: newarkpriest.com/quovadis.html

OUR LADY HELP OF PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS Parishioner Paul Noonan, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, escorted the icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians to Saint Joseph Church last weekend, where it was received by Fr. Anthony (also a Fourth Degree Knight) and a special prayer service was conducted for Saint Joseph Parish.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD ~ APRIL 14, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

COVER ART: “Entry Into Jerusalem” by Duccio di Buonisegna, 1308-1311. One of 26 narrative scenes from the stories of the Passion depicted on the altarpiece of Siena Cathedral. Now in Museo dell-Opera del Duomo, Siena, Italy.

One of the chief organizing themes of Luke’s Gospel has Jesus going up to Jerusalem to make the sacrifice of his life that won our

salvation. This is to be understood quite literally, since Jericho, where he passed through, lies 720 feet below sea level and Jerusalem is about 2450 feet above sea level to the southwest, a steep ascent for the 14.5 miles that separated the two cities in Our Lord’s time. A section of the the Book of Psalms recited by pilgrms to Jerusalem (Pss 120-134) is sometimes fittingly called “The Psalms of Ascent.” The city stood in the central hills, and people traveling to the great Temple from Galilee often took the route through Jericho to avoid the unpleasant incidents that could await those who journeyed through the shorter way through Samaria, because there had long been bad feelings between the Samaritans and the Jews. And this is how Jesus and his companions chose to travel for the first Holy Week. They would have walked through a stark desert, since very little rain fell east of Jerusalem. In Jesus’s day, Jerusalem had a population of about 25,000. Though it was isolated from the chief trade roads, and so, in one respect, did not have a robust economic trade, it nonetheless enjoyed some important profitable advantages, most having to do with the importance of the Temple worship to the Jewish people. Believers from many countries took part in it and needed to be fed and housed. The religious taxes they paid for the upkeep of the Temple and the sacrifices they offered there, which were far more convenient to purchase in Jerusalem than to transport from their homes, supported the local economy and the thousands of workers who kept the Temple complex functioning, including religious officials, security personnel, maintenance craftsmen, repairers of access roads and sellers of devotional jewelry. And with a population that swelled to as much as four times normal during the three great pilgrimage feasts, of which the Passover was the greatest, Jerusalem would have teemed with exciting life when Jesus and his followers arrived for their boisterous Palm Sunday welcome. This week the Church’s attention focuses on Jerusalem as we experience again the gifts of the Eucharist and the priesthood (on Holy Thursday), our rescue from sin through Jesus’s suffering and death (on Good Friday) and his eternal triumph (at the Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday), so generously shared with us through the new life of Baptism. Try to be with us for all of this joy. Msgr. David Hubba

THE PONTIFICAL GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church

minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday

BRAVADO

I like to tell myself I would have been Veronica:

braving Roman spears, the spit and stones

of growling ingrates, the flight of fickle followers,

to wipe the bleeding face of my beloved.

But I know I would have been like Peter:

swearing in the sunshine of His power

a loyalty unshakable, pledging my life for surety until the shadow of a cross

fell across the light, screaming then, “I do not

know the man!” hiding on the edge of Eden,

trying to forget when He let me walk on water.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me.” Luke 22:34 How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or our Catholic faith? How did you react? Do you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance? Or, do you remain quiet because you believe people will think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue when the opportunity arises.
