Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016

Congratulations to john toth!!! John Toth has been a member of St. Catherine of Siena for over 35 years. As an active member of the parish, John has served in many different capacities. Aside from running his own financial firm, he

was responsible for all of the parish accounting from 1980 until 2007. He also served the community as both a Lector and an Extraordinary Minister. John is the man who faithfully comes up to serve, without being asked, in the event someone hasn't shown for their assigned ministry. His involvement extended far beyond our Liturgy each week. Any fundraiser or event that was going on would mean John and his wife, Andrea were present. They regularly ran a booth in the midway at all of the parish festivals and anyone who stopped to play a game always left laughing. Every Night at the Races was sure to find John taking "bets" and paying off the winners. John is a true "pillar" of the church and a recognizable face that everyone can count on seeing. At present he remains at the head of our Finance Council offering his wisdom and insight for the best interests of the parish. In addition to his dedication to St. Catherine's, John has been married for 55 years. He and Andrea have 2 daughters, Melissa and Bridget and his 2 grandchildren are twin boys born on All Saints Day! While John has quietly given of his talents over the years, he has expressed genuine gratitude and surprise at receiving this award because "I didn't do any of it for praise of any kind. I did it for my church and for God" This is the generous attitude that makes honoring him even more meaningful.

Thank you, John, for your years of

tireless service to all of us at St.

Catherine's!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION THE LIVING ROSARY

Please mark the date and join us for the Living Rosary THIS SUNDAY, October 30th. All Religious Education students will be reciting the Rosary together AFTER the 9:00AM Mass. Praying to our Blessed Mother together is a great example to set for our children..

Due to the kindness of the Robert Martin Family, who have graciously agreed to share the Mass for him with everyone, we are able to honor all Veterans on November 13th at the 9:00AM Mass. In addition, we will be honoring those in law enforcement, firefighters, and medical rescue personnel who also protect us.

We cordially invite them all... Veterans, active and retired, all police, firefighters and medical rescuers, to Mass with their families.

Please wear your uniforms if possible After Mass we will be having a free breakfast for

you and your families in Siena Hall. Please RSVP to Erin @ 724-378-4783

ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE Our food drive continues through November. We are still collecting non-perishable food goods to distribute to the local food pantries. This has been a very successful program in the past and we hope to continue our success. Blue grocery bags are available at the entrances of the church or you can

fill your own bag. Please take down to Siena Hall before or after any Mass or drop off in the office during the week. Thanks you for your generosity. Together, WE truly DO make a difference at St. Catherine’s!

“Great Catholic Parishes”

This is the title of a just published book by William E. Simon, chairman and founder of a Catholic think tank called " Parish Catalyst." The book is subtitled "How Four Essential Practices Make Them Thrive." There are over 17,000 Catholic Parishes in the United States and his think tank identified the top 244 of them in terms of the vibrancy, productivity and fulfillment of Catholic mission given their individual circumstances - these are the stand out parishes in the lives of their communities. One of the 244 pastors interviewed and quoted in the book is our Pastor, Fr. Lou Vallone, who talks about the success of both St. Catherine of Siena and St. John of God in a time when many parishes are declining and failing. His comments and those of the other pastors are meant as a model or pattern that can be adapted by other Catholic communities to bring discipleship and growth in what seems to be a time of abandonment and closure. There is a resurrection in seeming death for any parish, according to Simon's findings if the people and the leadership are committed to Christ, to each other and to the work of the Spirit. It is worth reading in this time of On Mission by any Catholic who wants to look forward and not back. Available online at www.avemariapress.com and many secular booksellers. Good reading.

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016

“Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord, and let your faithful ones bless you.”

The Pastor’s Corner

Father Lou Vallone

“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” (Matt 7:26-27) By now, both parishes have had two Town Hall Meetings regarding On Mission and the information is being given wider distribution. I realize that most people are a bit overwhelmed, kind of like drinking from a fire hose, and we need time and help in unpacking and processing it. I will therefore devote several Corners to helping parishioners in that process. (It might be helpful not only to read these, but keep them in a file with all the information already being given out.) Think of where we are in the process like this: You have moved out of a great big house to a smaller apartment. Your new bedroom is much smaller, and in looking at the empty room you have to figure out the furniture arrangement. It is unlikely you will get the perfect fit the first time you move your stuff in. It will have to be adjusted several times until you are able to get a good night's sleep. The models we have been given are the FIRST suggested arrangements. In the next 14 months we will be moving stuff around to see what fits best. Right now, these models are based on metrics (numbers) only. Now we add the people-factor. I would suggest the way to do this is forget about the models as such, and rather examine the criteria or foundational principles that we used to construct the models. Let's look at some of the assumptions before the results of the assumptions. This way our models will be built on stone and not sand. There were 21 criteria that were used, and I will reflect on some them now. #3. "Plan for individual parish registrations of between 7,000 and 60,000" A bigger customer base for McDonald's or fan base for Tom Cruise might be desirable, but such outsized configurations are less than in keeping with the neighborhood and small community style traditional in our diocese, given the topography and other factors. This certainly needs to be made more realistic. #7. “No less than 1,000 persons attending Sunday Mass and preferably between 2,000 and 4,000.” These are arbitrary figures arrived at merely mathematically. Jesus had 12 at His first Mass. I had less than 50 worshippers when I became Pastor in the Hill District. Like Abraham bargaining with God over how many just people needed to be found to save Sodom and Gomorrah from destruction (Genesis 18: 20ff,) there is room for much negotiation as we examine alternate models as to how many worshippers are needed for vibrant liturgy to keep a church from being abandoned. #12. "Consider where registered parishioners live in relationship to their current parish territorial boundaries." Canon law bases parish membership solely on geography. Fr. Larry DiNardo gave a great talk at the Canon Law Society Convention in Pittsburgh last year distinguishing between membership (those who live within the boundaries), registration (those who live outside the boundaries but have signed up and are on the computer) and

participation (those who come on a regular basis, don't live in the boundaries, and never bothered to sign up.) His conclusion was that people are going to go where they want to go to church for their own reasons and it is counter productive to try to force them to do otherwise. I agree. This is not critical. #16. "There are less than 216 active diocesan priests; in 2025 there will be approximately 112." I doubt that 104 priests will die in the next 9 years. These figures reflect retirees, priests who become inactive voluntarily or involuntarily, those who for medical (whether physical, emotional or mental) reasons go on leave of absence as well as those who may die. It also ignores perhaps as many 35 international priests resident in the diocese for whom we provide no ministry, even part time. If we gave incentives to older guys to stay active, take better care of the guys we have with true charity and concern for the individual, maximize each priest's potential for ministry - whether great or little, and like most other dioceses find legal ways to employ foreign priests even on a part time basis, we can cut the number of those we lose at least in half. Let's put time, effort and money into doing that before we cry Wolf! #17. "Assume that 100 permanent deacons will be available for assignment in parishes." There are less than 90 active and functioning deacons now, only 14 in training who won't be ordained before 2021 (and there will be fewer by that date I warrant) and there is no class in the system to follow them as of now (and even if we get a new class, they won't be ready till 2025 at the earliest.) Let's be accurate about this figure. #18. "Plan for no more than 1 Saturday Vigil and 2 Sunday Masses per priest assigned." There is a canon law that limits each priest to 2 masses on a weekday and 3 on a Sunday. But this was for historical and pietistic reasons that are no longer critical. We are able to work more than 3 hours in any given day if we are doing what we are trained and ordained for, and enjoy, doing. Give more delegated power to others and leave the priest to do primarily his sacred functions, and we can be more productive. Things like making a diocesan policy that other prayer forms for weddings, graduations, celebrations be the norm instead of Mass and that will help. Other places do this now where there are truly far fewer priests available. Plan for it, be creative and do it. There are other assumptions that could use examination as well. But for now, let us think and pray about these so that when the diocese allows us open discussion and feedback, we can propose other models of our own that are positive and practical.

Please pray to the Holy Spirit and the Blessed

Mother for guidance on how to react to this

situation facing everyone in the Pittsburgh

Diocese. Working TOGETHER MIGHT make a

decided difference in our future.
