REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD Our readings today remind us of the larger story of the Bible, of God’s purposes and promises for the world. Because of humanity’s rejection of God, as told in Genesis, human communities were first dispersed. Isaiah proclaims that one day God will gather these communities to be healed and reconciled with God. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus echoes Isaiah and teaches that all peoples in God’s promised future “will recline at table in the kingdom of God.” Notice that in Isaiah, the nations coming to God do not lose their ethnicity or unique identity. They bring their own distinct cultural gifts to God’s table. Each people has its unique history with God, has received distinct blessings from God, and each is accountable to God. Today, we live in a global and multi-cultural Church. When God’s diverse peoples gather in worship today, may we honor and celebrate each oth-er’s gifts and blessings. ISRAEL AND THE NATIONS The Old Testament is the story of God and the people of Israel. Today we can also see that other peoples—“the nations”—are important participants in the story. It was a crowded Middle East, and other nations like Egypt, Canaan, and Babylon were often close observers of Israel’s encounters with God. They witnessed God’s judgment upon Israel and God’s restoration of Israel (Ezekiel 36). God’s reputation spread widely among them. God ruled them and blessed them (Psalm 47, Psalm 67). In today’s reading from Isaiah, the author presents a vision that all nations will one day be gathered to wor-ship God. They will be accepted in God’s house as full members, and blessed with God’s salvation (Isaiah 56, Isaiah 19). God’s intention all along was to form Israel so as to invite “the nations” to participate in the great plan. When God first called Abraham, God said “I will bless you . . . All the families of the earth will find bless-ing in you” (Genesis 12). We, the Church today, share in this call. THE LAST AND FIRST Jesus’ phrase in Luke’s Gospel today—“some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last”—also appears in similar form in Matthew (20:16) and Mark (10:31). All are concluding statements of a teaching of Jesus, but each appears in a differ-ent context. In Matthew, the phrase concludes the parable of the vineyard workers, upsetting listeners’ expectations of work and reward. In Mark, wealth is presented as an obstacle to salvation, again reversing expecta-tions. In Luke, when asked whether only a few may be saved, Jesus shifts the focus to who is best able to receive God’s invitation. Following his healing of a woman on the Sabbath (13:11-–17), Jesus emphasizes compassion over a narrow interpretation of Jewish law. To his listeners’ surprise, Jesus announces that those who practice compassion, rather than those in reli-gious leadership, are the first to understand and accept God’s salvation. Copyright © J. S. used throughout a series of 10 meetings to introduce the plan of God for marriage. Reconciliation and forgiveness, the holiness of the sexual act in marriage, the education of children, and the family as a light to the world are some of the aspects presented. Misa de Familias con Hijos con Necesidades Especiales La Oficina Para Ministerios Hispanos de La Diócesis de Or-ange los invita a todos los católicos Hispanos a la “XXVI Misa de Familias con Hijos con Necesidades Especiales.” Se llevará a cabo el día 21 de septiembre del 2019 a las 12:00 p.m. en la Iglesia de Santa Cecilia, en la ciudad de Tustin, situada en el 1301 Sycamore Ave, Tustin, CA 92780. 28 Tháng Tám—Thánh Augustine (354-430)

Là Kitô Hữu lúc 33 tuổi, làm linh mục lúc 36 tuổi, được tấn phong giám mục lúc 41 tuổi: ai ai cũng quen thuộc với tiểu sử tóm lược của Thánh Augustine Hippo, một tội-nhân-trở-thành-thánh-nhân. Nhưng có thực sự biết về cuộc đời thánh nhân thì điều đó mới có giá trị.

Dù khi xa cách Thiên Chúa hay hướng về Thiên Chúa, đời sống của ngài mau chóng đạt đến mức độ mãnh liệt. Nước mắt của mẹ ngài, những lời huấn đức của Thánh Ambrôsiô và, trên hết mọi sự, chính Thiên Chúa nói với ngài qua Kinh Thánh đã thay đổi tính đam mê thế gian của Augus-tine thành một cuộc đời đầy bác ái. Từng đắm chìm trong sự cao ngạo về cuộc đời mình trong thời niên thiếu và từng say sưa cặn bã cay đắng của cuộc đời, nên người ta không ngạc nhiên khi thấy Augustine, khi quay trở về, ngài đã phải chống trả với sự tấn công của ma quỷ bằng sự thánh thiện quyết liệt. Thời đại của ngài thực sự sa sút -- về chính trị, xã hội và luân lý. Người ta vừa sợ và vừa mến ngài, giống như Thầy Giêsu. Ngài bị chỉ trích không bao giờ cùng: là bản tính khắt khe của loài người. Cuộc đời ngài, do thiên ý, ngài đã chu toàn nhiệm vụ của một ngôn sứ. Như ngôn sứ Giêrêmia và các vị đại ngôn sứ khác, ngài bị bó buộc nhưng không thể giữ im lặng. "Tôi tự nhủ, tôi sẽ không nhắc đến Người, tôi sẽ không nhân danh Người mà lên tiếng nữa. Nhưng rồi như lửa bừng cháy trong tim, giam hãm thân thể tôi; và tôi cầm hãm không nổi, chịu đựng không thấu" (Giêrêmia 20:9).

Lời Bàn Trong thời đại chúng ta, Thánh Augustine vẫn còn được xưng tụng và vẫn còn bị kết án. Ngài là vị ngôn sứ của thời đại ngày nay, thúc giục chúng ta phải từ bỏ khuynh hướng thoát ly thực tế và can đảm đối diện với trách nhiệm và phẩm giá của mỗi một người.

DA LA BIENVENIDA AL EXTRANJERO Ya casi nos hemos acostumbrado a ver fotografías en las redes sociales e historias en los periódicos de in-migrantes latinoamericanos y refugiados sirios esca-pando de la violencia y la destrucción de sus propios países, intentando hacer una vida mejor en un lugar más seguro. También nos ha tocado ver las reaccio-nes de las personas que intentan mantenerlas lejos de sus países, que se oponen a ayudar a los extranjeros y a los niños indefensos. ¿Se nos ha olvidado la ense-ñanza de Jesús de ayudar a los desamparados y a los extranjeros? “Traerán todos a sus hermanos y herma-nas de todas las naciones . . . a Jerusalén, a mi monte santo, dice el Señor”. En las tres lecturas de hoy, se nos dice que debemos ser hospitalarios con los extranjeros, dar la bienvenida a los discípulos del Señor, lo cual nos lleva a la paz, y a “entrar por la puerta que es angosta” a la gloria del reino de Dios. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Hay quienes quieren negar los derechos de los inmi-grantes latinos que llegan a los Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor. Esta injusticia es extraña ya que los hispanos llegamos al territorio estadouniden-se en 1513, 73 años antes de la llegada de los prime-ros anglosajones. Estos fueron Ponce de León y compañeros quienes buscaban una mejor vida en la famosa fuente de la juventud. Eventualmente los his-panos dejaron de buscar la ilusoria fuente y en 1565 en la fiesta de san Agustín (28 de Agosto), Pedro Me-néndez de Avilés fundó la primera ciudad en Florida. Gracias a su santo patrón esta ciudad ha podido so-brevivir ataques de invasores británicos y piratas, amenazas de huracanes y tempestades para conver-tirse en la ciudad más vieja de la Unión Americana. ¿Pero quien fue este san-to? Agustín, fue un obispo africano, quien después de una vida desordenada se convirtió en uno de los santos mas importantes de la Iglesia, gracias a las oraciones continuas de su madre santa Mónica.
