The Most Holy Trinity June 11, 2017 3

Dear Parishioners, Each of us has been bap-tized into the mystery of the Holy Spirit. We invoke the Holy Trinity every time we sign ourselves with the cross. So today we pause to acknowledge this mystery

and to give thanks for the God of life who has sent the Son and the Holy Spirit for our salvation. May our Christian life together reflect the love among Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The second collection this weekend is taken for the Fund for Retired Priests. This is the only annual col-lection for retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Normal re-tirement age for priests in the Arch-diocese is 70. By the end of June there will be 230 retired Archdioce-san priests. They represent 30% of all the diocesan priests serving in the Archdiocese. 120 retired priests still celebrate Sunday Mass weekly, per-form marriages, funerals and bap-tisms; and visit sick in hospitals. Without these dedicated men, many parishes would not be able to offer the full range of Masses and sacra-ments that is currently offered. There are two independent living residences for retired priests that are subsidized by the Archdiocese. There

is space for 28 retired priests to en-joy communal living with their brother priests in retirement. All 28 rooms are currently being used. The special collection helps subsidize these two living facilities. 35 priests received or are currently receiving home assistance or have full-time aides coming to their home or rectory in the last year. The Arch-diocese will spend over $2,200,000 providing this care. We believe that these men who have given their lives in service to the Church should be adequately cared for when their health begins to fail. Today’s collec-tion is very important in helping these retired priests. Please remem-ber to pray for them. Next Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day. At all the masses a special bless-ing will be given to the Fathers. Every day we make the sign of the cross and invoke the name of the Most Holy Trinity. May the Holy Trinity continuously bless us in this week. Fr. Stan

RESPECT LIFE Recent Polls show that many Ameri-cans favor legalizing assisted suicide. Ad-vocates have made a convincing public case that, where “the right to die” is legal, assist-ed suicide is restricted to a “last resort” for people already on the verge of death or in unrelievable agony. But, as consumer activ-ist and attorney Wesley J. Smith shows in his book Forced Exit, these statements are false. First published in 1997, updated and expanded in 2006, Forced Exit remains a popular and prophetic resource on the slip-pery slope of so-called “death with dignity.”

Smith’s research found that most pa-tients and their families were generally una-ware that pain could be effectively reduced or eliminated, and that many people whose deaths had been hastened by euthanasia were, in fact, not terminally ill. Most dis-turbingly, Smith found that some doctors claimed the right to refuse medical treat-ment requested by disabled and seriously ill patients.

Today, the false compassion of the right-to-die movement has been unmasked by the barbarity taking place in Belgium and Canada, where euthanasia for psychiatric reasons and advanced age are now legal, as well as euthanasia for disabled children in the Netherlands. These are clear examples of the elimination of the most vulnerable members of society, and strongly resemble the well-documented “cleansing” policies of the most evil governments of the 20th centu-ry.

“…More than others who have written on this subject, [Wesley J. Smith] introduc-es readers to human perspectives that have been overlooked. In particular, the voices of persons with disabilities who have worked hard to analyze the impact of assisted sui-cide on their community—and on the great-er society—emerge powerfully.” —from a review by Carol J. Gill, Ph.D. president, Chicago Institute of Disability Research; adjunct professor, physical medicine and rehabilitation, Northwestern University Medical School

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY

The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mys-tery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it cre-ative energy and masterful design. No reli-gion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always trans-cends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mys-tery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctify-ing love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to hav-ing people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.” Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reform-er, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be can-onized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trini-ty, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a ta-ble tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: com-munity, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
